Was asked to buy several bottles yet they treated us poorly just because we had a coupon.... Smh please go elsewhere

While staying in Avila Beach for our first vacation in a very long time, my wife and I committed to not joining anymore wine clubs (after recently paring down to those we truly appreciated). Then along comes Alapay Cellars. On our first full day of our vacation, we decided to walk over to Alapay and sample their selection. Big mistake! Not only were all of the wines delicious, but we signed up for the club and bought one of each of their bottles! NOOOOO!!! We couldn't pass it up though because truthfully, the wines were all exceptional, the pricing very fair, and Scott (the owner) was truly awesome to speak with. We were fortunate to be there with nobody else and he gave us his undivided attention, answered all our questions and was a great, genuine guy to talk to. We were in town for five days and didn't visit any other wineries; however, we did go back on our last day to "revisit" the wines again. Scott was just as appreciative and pleasant to talk to as the first time. Yes, we are wine lovers, but we also are big on customer service and Alapay brings it! This place is a great place to wine taste and take a load off of your busy day. The staff was very knowledgeable and answered all the questions we had pertaining to the wines that we tasted. In fact we are going back in January to see the new wines and staying across the street at a hotel for the weekend. Price is ok, you get what you pay for. Terrible service. I assume the owner is the rude lady working here. The gentleman pouring our wine was kind and friendly. We bought a toy for our 4 year old son who was with us. He dropped it and she came over and grabbed it and said "this is going to brake", I let her know we payed for it a d she responded "oh" and walked away. As my cousin started planning her Birthday weekend, she called to tell me she wanted to make a point to go to Alapay Cellars and I instantly knew why. When our Aunt and Uncle passed away a few years ago, we were in the process of selling the house up North and came across several of Alapay Cellars business cards. My Uncle was a wine enthusiast and was a member of several wine clubs, yet throughout the house we kept finding Alapay cards in different rooms. She came across one of these business cards as she was making the reservations for the hotel and felt it was a sign that as a family it would be a great way to pay tribute to our Aunt and Uncle. The hotel we were staying at, praised Alapay and told us to request an Alapini which consisted of a red wine being mixed with champagne. Since I like bubbles, this sounded right up my ally. Also make sure to ask your hotel if they have any cards for the wineries as our hotel gave us a 2 for 1 wine tasting card. I would describe Alapay as a boutique winery, as they have so many neat items for sale, from "fake" lotion bottles for beverages, to a coffee mug that read, "I'm a genuine coffee slut", t-shirts, cooking supplies, magnets, and the cutest Indian motorcycle purses. The winery consists of one high table that seats at least 5 people, or you can sit at the wine bar, which seats about 8, they also have seating that wraps around one of the pillars, but this could pose an issue if you want to converse with the people at the bar. We arrived an hour before they were to close and we met the winemaker Scott, as well as co-owner Rebecca, they were nothing less than charming, making us right at home as we gabbed on about our day, we all agreed our drink of choice was the reserve Petite Sirah Grand Cuvee Sparkling. I would make a point to stop back in , because get this after all our discussion about having an Alapini, we forgot to ask for it and I am still kicking myself for not purchasing the mug and Purse. Stopped by their downtown Avila Beach tasting room on the recommendation of neighbors and so pleased I did. There may be fancier tasting rooms, but none friendlier. Most importantly, the sparkling, chardonnays, and reds were consistently very tasty. And the Port and Moscato are heavenly as well. Dropped in to Alapay Cellars at the suggestion of the front desk staff at Avila Village Inn (they had coupons for free wine tasting!). Browsed around the cool shop area, enjoyed the fish in his two aquariums, and then settled in for some wine tasting. The wines are really good...he even has a very tasting sparkling white wine that we really enjoyed. Overall the wines are very nice and absolutely worth the price. His wine club is also very easy - two shipments of six bottles per year for a fixed price of $180, which includes tax and shipping. Recommended. read more

A nice little winery in Avila Beach, with a neat set up inside. It has dimmed lighting for a neat atmosphere, and there are big fish tanks behind both of the bars which house beautiful tropical fish. Very cool, nautical decor. The lady that helped us with our tasting was friendly and entertaining, and had a very cool accent :] (from Chile). Their wines were good and we ended up buying a bottle of their Moscato dessert wine. read more

I've been coming to Alapay Cellars for a few years now because I love every kind of wine they pour. The sparking cuvee is a great way to start the tasting and the light reds like cinsault are easy drinking for any afternoon. My favorites are the deeper reds like syrah, petite syrah, zin and cab. All have great personality and are delicious. My father bought half a case of the petite syrah because it was so good and I bought half a case of the Alatre blend. I've met the owner Scott and he is always friendly and shares with us what wines he is working on. He does a wonderful job of creating delicious wines, some you will know and a few unknown varieties but very approachable. His staff is fun and wants to make sure you have a good experience, it's about the community not the sale. My wife has bought quite a few gifts from there shop too. We will definitely be back next time we're in Avila! read more

Deserving of four stars, because of the amazing moscato dessert wine. I don't even drink, but it's the first time I've ever tried this variety, and it is so utterly scrumptious that I ended up buying three bottles. Now I just need someone with whom to drink them. Other than that, service stunk. It's nice to have time to reflect on the wine and chit chat with friends, etc., but it's another thing to wait 15 minutes for the next choice. We were also late to a dinner reservation, so that didn't help either. But seriously, they need to pay better attention to their tasters, because we were getting irritated when the person would just walk away and leave us alone for so long. We were totally ready to move on to the next wine, but lo and behold, there was never anyone to pour us another. Plus, out of four people, I was the last in line, and I always received less wine than my companions, which I thought was lame (especially since they consistently didn't finish theirs and I did). The day after we got married in Monterey, we braved Mother Nature's wrath and drove to Avila Beach for 2 nights and 3 days. After checking in to our suite, we walked two blocks to have a glass of wine at Alapay Cellars. 3 glasses later we promised Amy- our phenomenal server we would be back the following day for a proper tasting! Amy provided the best knowledge and customer service!! Some wine tastings are boring and come with a "nose in the air" type of attitude... not at Alapay!! It casual yet refined, comfortable yet elegant! And they have the best tchotchke shopping ever!!! Scott the owner and wine maker was extremely personable and humble and Marnie was a delight!! But Amy made our entire experience so memorable!!! Hopefully she will come taste at the tasting room at the winery we pour at in Alexander Valley real soon!!! These people are so passionate and their passion immediately Won us over. Their wines are incredible. Avila beach has a cluster of wine tastings. I would definitely be sure to put this on your list. $10 for a tasting. This tasting was amazing and included 7? 8? wines!! I liked almost all of them. The tasting fee is waived if you buy a bottle or are part of their wine club. Our pourer (not sure her name) was very personable. Her spiel about each wine was short but she was happy to expand on any questions we had about the wines. Now onto the wines-- they were all easily drinkable yet still very flavorful and full-bodied. None of these burn your throat going down or those that can be mistaken for juice. I'd say their red wines were their strong suit and they had a good selection as well. We went home with a bottle of the Petit Syrah and the green apple white sparkling wine. It was tempting to join the wine club but this is a bit far from us. If we're ever back down the central coast, we will certainly stop by again! read more

What a great hidden gem! As my husband and I strolled down the streets of Avila Beach we ran across this cute little tasting room. We followed the sign which led us down a slight of stairs into this cozy tasting room that had the cool salt water fish tank in the back, cute little wine oriented gifts for purchase and some awesome reggae that really made you feel like you were at the beach. To top.off the ambiance the wine was really really good! The wine maker was so approachable and all around a nice guy!! Pretzle sticks accompanied the wine (which is awesome!) I really needed to use the restroom, and she told me "yes you can use ours but the public ones are on the pier" very rudely. I am so happy my husband and I stopped by here on our day off! We have never been wine tasting in Avila so we decided to stop by one winery just to check it out. We definitely picked a great one, and we will be back. Our favorites were the 2013 Chardonnay, 2013 Lagrein, and the 2007 Syrah port. We ended up going home with the Chardonnay. The atmosphere here was very nice. Down in a "basement" area with really cool aquariums. Their gift shop had a lot of cute items too. The winemaker was pouring for us, he was very friendly, and even though the bar was full and more people were tasting at tables, he did a great job of keeping everyone's glass full while talking about the wines. I definitely recommend this winery if you are tasting in the Avila Beach area! read more

I was so looking forward to our visit since some good friends of ours are club members and we've had their Rebekah wine at dinner with them. It was our first stop on a day full of wine tastings so we had a totally clear and sober mind. We found the girl behind the counter to be very rude and stand-off-ish. Some might say snobby. And this is not snobby wine. It's overpriced, mediocre wine. She was not friendly at all, was clearly just doing her job and barely at that. Wasn't keeping up with our pours and didn't have much to say about the wines. Didn't offer us pretzels. Only offered us chocolates with our port when we started reaching over the counter to get them ourselves. We do a lot of wine tastings and this was such a horrible experience. When we decided to purchase a bottle of the 2011 Zin, she gave us a hard time because we were only buying one. Not in a friendly, joking way either. Furthermore, when we opened the wine next door at the Custom House with our dinner, the wine tasted completely different. It tasted sour, even our waiter agreed. So we didn't even get to enjoy the $30 bottle of wine - it went straight to the trash. Minus a star for the sour wine. What a sad experience in Avila Beach. read more

Not impressed. My wife and I went here last night (a Friday), and found it loud, crowded, and rushed. The woman serving was cranking out the tastes, and seemed caught up only in what she had to do, without regard to the feelings of us, her patrons. The ambiance felt more like the fast lane on a freeway, rather than a calming casual experience for un-winding. Plus, the wines weren't cheap. What a shame. I visited this place and did the $10 wine tasting. The place was cute, but I was disappointed because I only got (literally) one sip per taste. I was confused because it seemed like everybody else in the place got a lot more pours. I know I'm young and might not want to buy a lot of bottles, but I think it's important to invest in customer service/experience and treat everyone the same. FYI I did buy a bottle. read more

Love this place! I found Alapay a year ago when my sister, who lives near here, took me here to do a wine tasting. We had been to other wineries that day, so I was quite surprised when she took us to downtown Avila Beach to taste wine. Uuummm...where is the winery and the rows of grapes? Alapay Cellars is just wine tasting room nestled in a quaint beach community. The winemaker/co-owner Scott Remmenga can usually be found serving wine to the tasters. I have seen a few other people who also help him out in the tasting room. It's a special occasion to actually have the winemaker talk to you about the wine as your getting to taste them. He is so excited about it. He defintiely has an envious life for many of us. He procures the grapes from outside sources along the central coast and then makes the wine himself. He makes great wines! I defintely recommend adding it to this place to any wine tour you may do along the central coast of California. Oh and try the Rebekah, a wine named after his wife who signs every bottle personally.
