Hormonal Acne: For the last 5 years I've been dealing with pretty much constant normal acne breakouts. I've had acne throughout my 20s but when I moved to New York at 25 - things got much worse. I had never been on birth control and was trying to avoid it- but out of desperation 1.5 years ago I started the pill. It took sometime to see any effects (about 4 months) and my skin did improve slightly - but not significantly. I was still have regular breakouts and really unhappy with my skin. In early January 2018 - I went back to the Derm and he suggested a permanent oral antibiotic - in addition to the pill. In fact I would have to stay on the pill because in the event I did get pregnant the medication could affect the baby. After much thought, I chose not to do the medication - but was back at a loss of what to do about the acne. It was during this time that I randomly think about acupuncture. I did research and found Dr Alban. He has been so so wonderful. I felt for the first time that a doctor was treating my whole body. I am able to happily report that my skin is now clear. I have been going once a week since January. He started me immediately on herbs that I take twice a day. I also do cupping. Highly recommend the herbs - it has been key to my skin clearing up I believe. My skin within about 6 weeks started to clear up significantly. Within 5 months - my skin was basically at a 9.5/10 - the occasional white head but NOTHING compared to how it had been before. I have since gone off birth control and my skin has maintained! I'm now happily off birth control with the clearest skin I've had in 10 years. Dr Alban and his office staff have been superb. I go weekly and it's alway a very pleasant experience. Dr. Joe is the bomb! I was diagnosed with endometriosis about a year ago and finding no relief from birth control & lifestyle changes, I decided to try acupuncture. I have been seeing Dr.Joe for about 3 months to treat my daily pain & have made a lot of progress since. My pain has been reduced from 5 or so days a week to 1-2 (if even that). There's still some way to go but I have been feeling so much better. Dr. Joe is incredibly compassionate and attentive. Joe is a miracle worker! I had developed absolutely horrific eczema on half of my body due to gut issues and because of those issues I really wanted to avoid steroids. I went to so many dermatologists and allergists who swore that steroids were the literal only option until I had a more holistic dermatologist recommend Joe. He made my eczema disappear completely in about 6 months with acupuncture and Chinese herbs! The herbs are disgusting and not cheap but totally worth it. This was the first time I ever had acupuncture in my entire life. I have a lot of past injuries, but recent pain in my right lower back all the way down to my lower right knee was serious pain. I had problems getting out of bed and walking most of the time. It went into a month a half with no improvement. I went to Joe when my skin suddenly erupted in acne at age 25. I knew virtually nothing about acupuncture, but after spending my teenage years going religiously to dermatologists and having only mild success, I figured I should try something different. I was a little wary the first time, but Joe was patient with my skepticism and explained the process. He prescribed herbal tea that tasted awful, but was very effective! I have been going in for acupuncture twice each month for several months. I have seen a substantial change; my skin is virtually clear now. And there were no side effects like those that came with prescriptions from the dermatologist. Joe is extremely approachable, caring, listens thoughtfully to any concerns or issues you have, and is interesting to chat with while your needles are inserted/removed. I've been here quite a few times. It's very clean and the treatment room was private. The treatment was tailored to my lifestyle, so I had instant herbs for travel, and a prescription for raw herbs to prepare at home in a clay pot. The raw herbs were a bit of work, as I had to get the prescription filled in Chinatown and cook them myself, and they taste absolutely awful, but the results were outstanding. I'm not going to say I enjoy acupuncture because I don't, but Joe is one of the less pain-inducing ones I have visited. I deduct the one star because I don't love the high energy midtown office feel of the place when I am lying on the bed with my needles in. On the other hand it is very easy to reach, so it's a matter of taste. read more

About 6 months ago I went to Joseph Alban when my acne flared up and I couldn't find another solution. In a nutshell, I'm so glad I tried acupuncture, cupping and herbs for my skin with Alban Acupuncture, I highly recommend Joseph. I've had acne for over 20 years. I go to a dermatologist regularly, have been on EVERY medication both topical and oral (yes, including Accutane - unfortunately it didn't work although was a good dose of torture), and although my skin is far from flawless, I've been able to manage it after finding the right prescription. It's been under control for several years and for seemingly no reason I broke out terribly. For months I couldn't figure out what was going on as beyond the random breakouts my face became pretty bad with cystic acne, black and white heads - very painful and quite unsightly. My dermatologist said I had 1 option which was to switch to Accutane again. It's been several years since I last tried it, but it was a terrible experience. I'd never tried acupuncture for acne and came across Alban Acupuncture. I did about a total of about 3 - 4 months of acupuncture, cupping and Chinese herbs which he changed throughout the program. The treatment was designed for my skin and herbs altered based on the progress. Joseph is very knowledgeable, patient, clear, and happy to answer questions. Deirdre who works in the office is wonderful. The only con is that it's not cheap and my insurance doesn't cover it, but knowing that Joseph's plan was not for me to have ongoing acupuncture as a solution and certainly after seeing the results, it was 100% worth the investment. My skin cleared up to the best it's ever been, not perfect, but pretty close. I haven't been in about 3 months and it has remained in good shape. This is probably my thousandth time saying it, but acupuncture with Joe is absolutely wonderful. I have had treatments since last summer and I have seen a tremendous decrease in anxiety, neck and back pain. I have seen chiropractors and physical therapists but I have not had the results that I see after acupuncture visits with Joe. The office is very clean, the staff is very friendly and they email appointment reminders which is very helpful. I just finished a course of Chinese herbal medicine treatment with Joe for a case of pompholyx (aka dyshidrotic eczema). If you've never heard of this agonizingly itchy skin condition, consider yourself lucky. I can't count the hours of sleep I lost over the last year trying and failing not to scratch. Until visiting Joe's clinic, I had never treated any medical condition with anything other than standard western medicine. When the eczema first appeared, I visited my regular dermatologist several times and received one steroid cream after another, but nothing helped to alleviate the itching or stem the spread of the rash. Everything I read in peer reviewed medical journals seemed to suggest that dermatologists don't really know what causes this condition or how to cure it. I decided to try Chinese medicine after reading a few articles online that suggested it might help. Joe prescribed a complex combination of herbs to be boiled for some of the worst tasting tea I have ever had, but over the course of about 2 months, it worked. I have absolutely NOTHING bad to say about Joe or his practice. I love them. I originally came to him for extreme tightness in my calf/thigh muscles and IT band that started almost a year earlier when I was running every day. I had never had acupuncture before, but I really didn't know what to do because even with rest, my legs still hurt to a somewhat debilitating degree. I had almost resigned myself to just being uncomfortable, but fortunately I decided instead to visit Joe. The office is pleasant and relaxing, with a cozy, but clean and professional vibe. Joe has an excellent bedside manner and is a genuine interested - and interesting - person. He is knowledgable about acupuncture and explains everything to you. After one session, I felt markedly better and I have continued to improve over the last several months that I have been seeing Joe. As far as any concern about the needles, you barely feel them at all. Much of the time in the office is spent relaxing, in my case with my eyes closed, and I really don't feel them at all past the second in which they are placed. Joe also gave me some aftercare advice, including stretches and the use of a foam roller, both of which have really helped to speed my recovery along. Although I did not originally come to Joe for my rosacea, Joe did prescribe an herbal treatment for this as well, with truly impressive results. Even my dermatologist was impressed! No review of Alban Acupuncture would be complete, however, without mentioning Bettina, Joe's receptionist. She is a national treasure. She is 100% on top of everything as far as running the office, and is also a charismatic, if deadpan, presence. My daughter (also a patient) and I have whiled away more hours chatting with Bettina about a wide variety of subjects - she is the sort of person that would be very difficult for anyone to dislike and displays true wit. I can't praise him enough, Joe spends a tremendous amount of time at each appointment to review my condition, provide additional information and suggestions... I have never experienced this kind of attention in NYC. Joe has an extremely gentle and relaxed nature, which is always helpful and calming. Joe has also created different types of creams, oils for use. The oil I use for my eczema has been a life changer. I highly recommend Alban Acupuncture for anyone who is suffering from a chronic pain condition. I was suffering from pelvic pain and had been to see two physicians, two urologists, two physical therapists and another acupuncturist before I went to see Joe. He spent two hours with me on my first visit talking to me about my symptoms (no other health professional had ever spent more than a few minutes diagnosing my condition).
