We arrived early 'cause we're old, we didn't want to stand all night, and hoped to grab a table by the bar. We had to wait for 5-10 minutes outside before the doors opened at 7:00. It was cold out there! While we stood there, a bouncer came outside and stood with us. He could have remained indoors where it was warm. But in a gesture of silent solidarity, the dude joined us in the cold until the doors opened. He didn't make a big deal about it, just stood with us. You know, in our angry, cynical, stressed out world, it's awfully nice to witness a small display of humanity. Thanks, big guy. Once inside we snagged a table near the bar. I asked the bartender for a virgin strawberry margarita for my wife. But alas, the margaritas are premixed and they'd all lost their virginity. The bartender offered to make a substitute concoction for my wife. She asked me to report back and if my wife didn't like the drink, she'd comp us. Again, real decency. And good mixology, too. The drink was great. The show was fantastic, the acoustics outstanding, and the overall vibe at ARC is cool but unpretentious. It's a kick-ass independent music venue. That was our first show, and we'll be back for more. P.S. If ARC is reading this, could you maybe book more hip hop?

We saw "The Carpenters", which I saw a while back at the Algonquin theater. I wanted to see the show again because it was so good, but this show was like listening to the B-side of a 45. I can't even tell you how disappointed I was that they didn't play many hits. She sang covers from other artists and not so popular hits. I personally found it strange the way the show began with the guy running the strand, coming on stage with a piece of paper talking, and then having us stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. I have no problems saying the Pledge of Allegiance, but I just found the whole thing odd. I've never gone to any other musical event or show where they had everyone stand up and say the Pledge of Allegiance prior to the event. I also had a rude person seating us. I thought I had bought center orchestra, but it turned out that I bought center tier and when I told him I just wanted to look at my phone to verify what I had purchased because I thought my tickets were wrong. He got nasty with me and told me that's what your ticket said that's what you bought and I told him to just give me a minute so I could just look it up on my phone to verify and it wasn't like he had anything else to do or he was seating anyone else I didn't ask him to wait with me. I understood that my tickets were for the tier, but before I climb the stairs to the top, I wanted to make sure that I got the correct tickets from Will call, but instead of just letting me be, he felt the need to argue with me when there was no argument to be had, and him finally walking away, saying whatever. Other than him all the other people working there were great. This was just one experience but normally I never have any problems there.

This year, the same friend rented out the entire place including two sets by the house band for a milestone birthday celebration. I believe they have catering packages, but in this case, our friends supplied the food while the venue supplied the beverages and took care of cleaning up. Summary: Unique venue, great volunteers, questionable ethics of the owner, and underpays artists…read more It is NOT a registered non-profit organization, despite what they claim! It is a unique venue that is good for small performances. The volunteer staff there is AMAZING - making artists and customers very comfortable and building a strong sense of community. I couldn't say enough good things about the unpaid volunteers who work there. A few serious problems with ownership of the venue, however: - Though they position themselves as "non-profit" they are NOT actually a registered nonprofit organization. - It is almost completely volunteer run... and those volunteers do it for the love of music and are unpaid (which doesn't seem fair given the ticket revenue). - The artists are offered a flat fee for performances (I've seen ~$500). - Ticket prices run $30-$60... and most events get sold out. At 70 seats, this means that they make at least $2500 per event (even after transaction fees). - This means that the owner is likely making $1500+ per show after overhead costs... (as mentioned, the volunteers are unpaid and it is positioned as a "nonprofit") On top of this, they solicit donations on their website... AND they actually pass a bucket around during shows, aggressively seeking "donations" to cover their costs (even though their costs are clearly covered by ticket prices). Since they are not an official nonprofit organization, they are not required to be transparent about where the donations and income from tickets go. In summary: the owner positions it as a "nonprofit"... but it appears that he is making SIGNIFICANT profit off the backs of the artists who perform and the VOLUNTEERS who work there. Nothing illegal about this - but it does appear to have ethical challenges. Recommendations: - Before donating, ask for details and records for how the money will be used - and get it in writing - If you donate, understand that it will NOT be tax deductible - If you are an artist considering performing there... DO NOT ACCEPT A SIMPLE FLAT FEE. Demand a ticket split in addition to the flat fee - and GET IT IN WRITING.

The service as far as entering the venue, showing your tickets, etcetera was seamless. Again, there's no vip seating or box seats, it's a bowling alley turned concert venue so general admission/first come first serve rules apply. My only gripe would be how cold it was inside. Of course, the more crowded, the less chilly. But still, you could feel a draft whenever the doors opened. Overall, we had a wonderful time. I'd go again!
