My boyfriend and I came from PetSmart puppy & intermediate level classes (at the Delta Shores location) and self-teaching with content from SolidK9Training and The Good Dog Training. We were looking for a local trainer who could help teach us how to use an e-collar with our two German Shepherds. Though the group classes doesn't teach that exactly, we've been able to learn a lot about leash handling skills, which helps build upon the foundation as we switch over to an e-collar. We went through the 4 week beginning class, then moved onto the intermediate class. What I like about the beginning class is that you get introduced to being in a highly distracting environment, different training tools, and even agility. Also, you're allowed to return to any beginning classes for free refreshers. Lots of different topics get introduced within the 4 weeks, so it could feel a bit hectic. However, Alan spends about 10 minutes towards the end of class to answer any questions people may have. My boyfriend and I really enjoy the intermediate class. You can pay $20 to drop into a class or sign up for the 4 weeks upfront. Many regulars seem to train their dogs for sport or work, so they serve as nice goals to work towards. Intermediate class requires bringing the same gear each week (target, object to hold, yummy treats, long line) and cycles through practicing similar commands/skills, so it feels easier to follow along. At the end of classes, Alan does tell everyone to reach out if we ever have any questions throughout the week. On the occasions I've had questions during the week, I would send an email to Renee and she would call me to better explain things. Alan clearly knows his work. There is no question. And Renee provides excellent customer service and deeply cares. However, Alan's derogatory comments about Renee that he incorporates as part of his commentary are offensive. And unnecessary and detracts from the teaching. "Renee has a low IQ, that's why she's good at this job", is just one example. I attended two sessions to be sure that my observation was accurate. My partner had the same reaction with no front loading from me. During CV19 group classes are packed at 16-20 dogs, outside and in the dark and cold. This is not their fault but it is hard to hear and very chaotic. I did learn and employed that learning with success. I understand that many highly praise Alan's skill and expertise, but for me the fact that part of his presentation includes jokes about Renee in a derogatory way is a unacceptable and unprofessional and have me seeking another trainer. read more

I attended a class with my 6 month old puppy. First, there were SO MANY attendees at the class, that there was no actual training. All they did was 6 classes of demonstrations and us walking around in a big circle. There was no actual training on sit, down, stay. The training on heel was minimal and half-azzed. There was no one on one - except when they used a client's dog for a demonstration. Most often, they simply demonstrated with their doberman as to what a trained dog should look like. None of that actually provided any training for the clients. Fortunately, I know how to train a dog (and what not to do - see below) and was just attending for the socialization aspect. To add to that, there was a young dog there who was very excitable. They instructed the client to put a prong collar on the dog. The dog was so sensitive to touch that she cringed at even a hint of the collar touching her neck - just sitting with a loose leash had her cringing in fear. That dog ABSOLUTELY DID NOT need a prong collar. All she needed was to arrive a bit early and settle down before class started. She was just hyper and excited as young dogs tend to be. When the trainer saw her cringe and saw the look on my face, he simply told the client "you should use plastic prongs". NO! That dog did not need ANY prong. She didn't even need a leash correction. She just needed a chance to get used to things BEFORE being put to work. Overall, the class was ineffective. The argument may be that for one-on-one you need a private consultation, but I've been to many training classes over the years and there is no reason to require a private consultation to learn basic obedience. Except when the trainer allows more clients at the training than they can actually work with at one time. As for their methods, using a prong collar on that dog was unacceptable. That they immediately went for a prong collar rather than suggesting a non-punishment method to help the dog settle down shows that they are not willing to put in the time to work with your dog. If your dog doesn't respond immediately (even though the poor dog hasn't been trained yet), they go straight to punishment and pain. This is inappropriate. Please do your dog a good deed and stay away from this trainer. read more

Renee is incredibly intuitive, as soon as I described the issue between my dogs (resource guarding and biting), she asked about my dogs' ages and understood that the younger dog is "coming up in the world" while the other senior dog is on the decline. She made suggestions (crate training and slip leash) that immediately helped curb the biting, and when Alan came out a month later (they're so good, they're booked solid), he was able to show us more tools and how to get better listening and obedience out of both dogs, which will help ward off future biting. Very knowledgeable about german shepard behavior. I like the fact they teach you how to handle your dog on a leash rather then using a reward based system. Ive gone through courses like this before, all it does is teach your dog to listen to you when you only have food. Haha! Their method is golden. They stand behind their training and will let you come back for a refresher or for a different class time/day if more training is needed. We ended up needing to do the beginning class over as our boy entered his "rebellious teenager " phase. We have seen improvement in behavior around other dogs/squirrels and cats. Our house rabbit is also back out of his cage to take a snooze because our dog leaves him alone. Highly recommend this place to train dogs of all ages and breeds. read more

My husband and I owe everything to Alan and Renee. We were first told about them from our vet at SAH. We had a LOT of biting/dominance issues with our Rottweiler puppy when we first got him. Since our pup was not yet fully vaccinated, Alan came to our house and did a home training session, which is where it all started. From there, once he was fully vaccinated, we went weekly for beginners class for about a year. He did well and eventually moved into the next class up where we went weekly. We've had training with another trainer pre COVID-19 but they were located a little far. No complaints, just wanted something closer. We just finished our lesson for bad manners: mouthing/chewing hands, jumping on people, pulling leash, counter surfing. Had a really great and through session in our home with Alan. He brought a bag of tricks to help us find what would work for our Husky/Malamute/German Shepherd puppy who is 7 months old. Her 20 + years of vet tech experience is incredibly helpful. Just lots and lots of bravos to her! Alan came to my apartment for Zeesa's first training session. He's so knowledgeable not just with discipline but also which collars, leashes, etc. work best for your individual dog. In May I signed up for the group lessons. Alan demonstrated with his Sherlock (Rottweiler) and the participating owners' dogs how, with patience and lots of practice, we, too, can get our dogs to be more obedient and follow our commands. Watching Alan and Sherlock interact though, I'll be grateful if I can get my 7-month Frenchton to be half as cooperative! I just finished a four week class with my 9-month old corgi, Dexter, and I am so so happy I did! He is my first pet I have ever raised by myself and I definitely needed the help to make sure he is well behaved. Any dog I ever have for the rest of my life will be trained with the tactics I learned in this course. My favorite part of this class is that you as an owner are given the tools to teach your dog everything you need him to know. Renee was professional & friendly when I was in contact with her about my problem rescue (Husky, German Shepherd, Malamute mix). Alan & Renee are two of the best dog trainers in Sacramento. I've attempted at a few basic trainings for my hound dog and fell very disappointed, as most were geared for the classic golden retriever or lab not any of the more willful and independent breeds. I decided to take another chance on training and hooked up with Albree. I tried the beginning group training for my 4 month old puppy. I have a coonhound, so not the easiest task to take on. Their trainings were geared to the individual dog and breed, not one general technique for all dogs. Which I think many can appreciate after hearing advice time and time again from friends that just does not apply to your dog. They use many different techniques and training devices (i.e. gentle-leader, slip leads, pinch-collars, harnesses, etc), and will try them with your dog and demonstrate the proper uses. Any basic puppy class is great for someone with a toy breed or biddable dog (i.e. goldens, labs, most aussies, dobermans, etc.), but for those of you have terriers, hounds, huskies, GSD and so on and need a more serious approach, I truly recommend Albree. At the very least you can save $$. They allow you to return to any of the beginning training sessions once yours has finished for a refresher any time you need it. read more

Alan and Renee are wonderful to work with and their training classes are perfect for people who just got a new dog, are new to training dogs, have a challenging doggy, or (like me) just want to socialize and entertain their beasties. They were complete professionals from start to finish, and they clearly know what they are doing. If you are looking for a good place to get your dog going on the right path--I highly recommend them. Group classes are held several nights a week at Tahoe Park, and private lessons are available, too. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the size of the class--would have liked to have fewer dogs/people. But Alan and Renee work as a team and it was not a major issue. The dogs and their owners covered a range of personalities--from very friendly to, um, rather difficult. (And yes, I do mean both dogs and peoples.) Have you read "Go, Dog, Go" by Dr. Seuss? The class was like that--dogs of every shape and size, from a little Shiba Inu to a ginormous galumphing oaf of a Rottweiller. Alan and Renee dealt with everyone and every dog with patience and great attitudes. Those with the more challenging dogs did get more attention and guidance, which was also great. (In my case, I have a Queensland heeler who is very responsive to training, but she needed to be better socialized. This class was really perfect for her, and I'm planning to take her through Alan and Renee's more advanced classes now, too.) Overall, a very positive and fun experience for both of us! read more

I contacted Albree Dog Training via email to get additional information and Renee responded quickly! We emailed back and forth and she provided me ALL the info I needed. I really appreciated the email correspondence since I'm busy at work and if she called, we would have most likely played phone tag! I knew Albree was the right place for us when I emailed specifically about a Boxer and an Old English Sheepdog and some training. She wrote back a very long, detailed email nailing each dog EXACTLY! It's like she knew my dogs! We had Alan come to our house for a 90 min session to work with both dogs which was PERFECT for us! Mostly because our Boxer is 5 and well trained and our OES is a puppy and not trained but I wanted them to have a little bit of the same training and for the trainer to help us with the dynamics between the 2 of them... which wouldn't happen if I just took the puppy to group classes. We mostly focused on the puppy but he also gave us advanced training to work on with our Boxer! Alan was great! He is nice, easy to talk to, a great listener and has high energy! We learned so much and it was nice to hear we were on the right track. I really needed the validation to keep doing what I was doing! Now I can do it with confidence! My wife and I just finished our 90 minute session with Alan from Albree Dog Training and we feel confident that we will be able to have better control of our dog. We recently rescued a four year old boxer who is reactive towards other animals and tends to pull on his leash on walks. When I say reactive, I mean he pulled my wife into the street to approach another dog and was jumping and barking. Alan showed us how to properly get our dog's attention during our session. In addition, he showed us how to correct unwanted behaviors. We even went to a local dog park to practice and working on our boxers poor habits. We have some work to do ourselves, but I gained a lot out of the 90 minute session. Our family was watching YouTube to correct unwanted behaviors but it was not working.
