Will never return here after my dog required veterinary care due to an injury sustained during a boarding stay at Alcala in April 2024 that was directly caused by their care. When I picked my dog up after five days of boarding, I was shocked to learn that he had been put into solitary confinement an hour after I dropped him off due to "showing aggression with another dog" and he stayed in solitary for the entire five days he was there. When I asked why I wasn't informed of this at all, the employee told me they "didn't have all of the information at the time" which made no sense considering they were the witnesses and decision makers. When I brought him home I noticed a large sore on one of his elbows that he didn't have when I dropped him off at Alcala. His veterinarian told me it was likely caused by laying in the same spot and not moving for hours, a result of Alcala confining him in an area too small for him. He ended up requiring topical medication to treat the wound. My dog had never shown aggression while with me, at any previous boarding facility, nor at daycare sessions at Alcala prior to this boarding. Regardless, even if their accusation was true, the fact they never communicated anything with me and just left my dog to rot in a crate for five days straight was inexcusable. read more

My review is for the cat hotel specifically. The main employee at the cattery, David, is a great caretaker. You can tell he is genuinely passionate about cats. My cat stayed for 3 nights and I got two detailed text updates and photos while he was there. Pick up and drop off was smooth. Prices are very reasonable. I have been taking my golden retriever, Lincoln, to Alcala for several years now and he loves it. The staff are friendly and caring. You can tell how much they enjoy their jobs. I have boarded Lincoln and had him groomed. Never an issue. Recently, Lincoln rolled around in some bushes on a trail walk with me. He ended up with LARGE burrs in his hair to the point that I could not get all of them. I took him to Alcala for daycare and asked if the groomer possibly had time to get the rest of them. We had to cancel our trip due to Alcala's poor communication and processes. A timeline: 3 Weeks to Trip: Reservation made 6 Days to Trip: Evaluation - all good 2 Days to Trip: Acclimatization - "We cannot board your dog" Picking up our dog on acclimatization day, he was so anxious and distressed that he peed in the entryway. When I asked why they would not board him I received conflicting responses from the staff. I was ultimately told that he barked at the male staff, but this makes no sense to me. We do day boarding regularly with another (better) facility in the area, and they have never had anything but positive things to say about his interactions with people. He always came away from that facility happy and tired. Moreover, we have had male house sitters care for him, and he has been handled by male vet techs. I can only surmise from his nervousness when we picked him up at Alcala that the staff here know neither how to read dogs nor how to successfully interact with them aside from the most unflappable individuals. Putting aside everything else, giving the go-ahead for boarding six days before only to rescind it with only two days to go is absolutely unacceptable, as it leaves zero room to make alternative arrangements. read more

Boarded dogs are left alone overnight. My dogs have been boarding at Alcala for years and unfortunately their last recent stay will be their last. My dog had an upset stomach for days over his stay and was left alone for 6 hours at night without being able to be let out, and developed a severe skin infection and lesions as a result of being stuck in his own filth. I was shocked to learn there is no regular overnight care or protocol for a sick dog to provide overnight care as not just a special circumstance. I would have given 1 star but Manager Audrey did make arrangements for our dog to go to the vet and be monitored around the clock until pick up. read more

My husband and I adopted our sweet boy Beaux in June of 2024. We quickly discovered he would get really overstimulated, really quickly. And while we were researching and training at home as much as we could, we were finding ourselves facing issue after issue or setback after setback. He was reactive to all dogs, and even though his reactivity was that of excitement, we knew that he didn't have the tools necessary to come face to face with other untrained dogs like him (dogs that were submissive or had good training previously were okay for him to handle). We knew we needed help and were recommended Alcala by another pet parent at the dog park. We set up our orientation as soon as we could and we immediately fell in love with the place. The manager, Courtney, did our orientation and was SO knowledgeable about every single topic we had questions about. I was incredibly nervous to leave him there - as I was DREADING the (what felt like inevitable) phone call telling me Beaux was too much for them to handle. But, the call never came. In fact, when we picked him up the first day, and saw how happy he was, we knew immediately that we made the right decision choosing Alcala. He did one five-week class at two days a week and the improvements we saw from him were undeniable!! He walked on leashes better, his reactivity was better, his at home manners were better, and while we knew he had a long way to go, I felt so much more confident and SAFE taking him outside on my own. At the time, he was about 90lbs, today he's a 101, and the fear I had about not being able to handle him is largely gone and I credit it 100% to Alcala. Our trainer, Cydney, was with us every step of the way. We would ask question after question, provide story after story for context, and she would always have exercises that would potentially (and usually did) help immensely. For the rare occasion that something we learned and tried wasn't helping as well as we would've hoped, she would quickly pivot, demonstrate, and give us new exercises to try. We saw so much improvement in his first five-week package that we signed up for another - simply hoping for more of the same, because his progress was unbelievable. We were pleasantly surprised to see more progress yet again. Not only did we maintain the level of training he had learned but he expanded on it even more! Beaux is calmer, SO much less reactive, and is so much more well behaved at home (which is shocking because he never really gave us a hard time in the first place). He finished out his package this week, and while we're going to take the rest of the year to be home and spend the holidays with family, my husband and I are already making plans as to when we can bring him back. The joy Alcala has brought Beaux is palpable. The ease of mind and confidence it has brought me is undeniable. My husband feels more confident handling training situations in public, a task I am still trying to master. I could not recommend Alcala enough. I'm really surprised this place does not have more reviews, because it was AMAZING. We only heard about it from our friend who lives in San Diego. We live in Los Angeles and specifically drove to San Diego to use this dog daycare and boarding center, as we were going out of town for two weeks for the holidays. None of the Los Angeles ones were even comparable to Alcala! These guys and gals sure know how to take care of dogs. Our golden retriever usually gets homesick after one night (we've tried multiple daycares before), but this place was able to make him feel comfortable and treat him well. If you have a golden retriever, this place also does a really good golden cut as well. Tara (owner) was able to work around our schedule, truly cared about our pup, and set him up with Tasia who does an AMAZING job with goldens. We were so happy to have our pup back that we didn't even notice how great our golden's cut was until we got home. He got compliments all around, especially with how well they shaped and carefully cut his butt fluff. Highly recommend working with both Tara and Tasia! Tara: please make sure Tasia sees this review. This was my 6 month old puppys 3rd visit to their doggy day care and I couldn't be more pleased with their services. The staff is very friendly and have been very transparent on how my puppy interacts and socializes with the other dogs. They let me know since he's a high energy friendly dog they placed him with other dogs that were similar to his personality. They also let me know he settled in fine during the rest period between play times. This communication gives me peace of mind that they actually monitor your dogs personality and activity level and place them with dogs that have similar personalities. My puppy has come home happy & calm without any signs of stress what so ever. I will be returning next week to doggy day care and plan on utilizing their boarding services soon. Well, this place SEEMS great. But, I mean, I dropped off my cats and didn't see them all or how things went all day, so ... how can I really tell? Let me say this, Alcala Country Pet Resort looks very impressive. On the outside, it consists of multiple buildings dotting a long street ending in a cul de sac. The interiors are clean, setup like a cross between the granny flat at a posh, southern plantation and the apartment of your crazy aunt that owns six various cats, two yorkshire terriers, and a pygmy marmoset. Thank you for the Walmart Gift Card on my birthday, Aunt Petunia. The people behind t eh counter were nice, welcoming, and obviously fond of pets as they happily accepted my two cats for the day. Where they took them was a house separate from the boarded dogs, that was decorated in a 60's style with dated furniture and walls lined with cages for their charges. I promptly placed both carriers in their own cage, opened them up, and walked away as my cats gazed at me with pain and betrayal burning in their eyes. I have no idea if, during the eight hours or so that I had been gone, if they were allowed to wander around their rooms. Or if they had been given any treats. Or if someone had even come in to scratch them behind the ear once or twice. All I know is that when I came back, they were still in their nice, little cage and didn't seem like they had been mistreated in any fashion. I paid my bill, drove them home, and when they got back to the condo it was business as usual. So, I guess what I'm saying, is that if I can leave my pets in a strange place and abandon them for a few hours and then have them treat me like I'd done nothing wrong at the end of it ... I guess that place must be A-OK. Since I'm leaving the area soon, I don't think I'll ever be back. But for anyone in Encinitas with a desperate need to get Fluffy out of the house, you could do far worse than Alcala. read more

It wasn't the fact I was put on hold that upset me, that's a very normal thing to happen and is totally fine, I don't think I am above anyone else and totally fine waiting in queue. But when I called I had a couple questions and the owner kept putting me on hold over and over meaning she would hear my question and then not answer and then put me on hold several times over and over. Which even that is fine. By the time of 20 minutes went by of being put on hold several times and not getting any questions answered, she finally told me I would have to put down a credit card first before I could talk to her about details regarding an old sick cats stay. If you waste someone's time like that you are going to get a bad review. Sorry. I didn't appreciate her ego so she didn't get my business and got some unfavorable feedback. So unlike any of the other boarding facilities that I had talked to. Didn't have a problem with anyone else. I stand by my review a year later. Sorry! read more

Courtney (our dogs trainer at Alcala) is amazing. We actually used her with our previous dog and followed her from her last facility. She exceeds expectations every session. Our previous dog was aggressive on leash and unable to safely interact with other dogs and with courtney he did a complete 180. She currently trains our puppy June who has learned more than we ever could have expected. She walks well one leash, comes on command and will sit and wait patiently anytime and any place. Everyone that works here really cares about your pet like it's their own. My dog gets so excited to go to daycare or boarding which makes me happy.
