Although I couldn't find any photos of the exact look I was trying to achieve, I did have a few to use as a baseline. Drea listened to everything I described as I told her what my goals were (bring out my eye color, relatively low-maintenance, subtle-yet-noticeable color...) and she delivered! Wanted to add a second review because every time I come here the results are just so amazing. Anytime I got layers at other salons I would end up looking like a mushroom. This salon was a game changer for me--totally killed my phobia of layers. Justine helped me to thin out some areas (my hair gets really thick and heavy) and add layers for movement. It's hard to find a good salon. I get my hair done too often to put up with a place that is always busy busy busy and you can't get an appointment, or a salon that is dated and needs a makeover itself. Even worse is a salon full of negative, gossipy stylists. Yuck. I am happy to say that this place is none of the above. Alchemy in San Marcos is cute, clean, modern and chill. There is a sweet little coffee/tea table in the "lounge" (which is just a couple of chairs near a sunny window). There they have a Kuerig with many flavors of coffee from which to choose, the good creamers, a tea selection, and a glass bell jar filled with chocolate chip biscotti and tiny muffins. In addition to complimentary snacks, they use and sell high end products such as Davines. Their shampoo bowls are comfortable enough and the music is not too loud. Finding a good salon is hard, but finding a good stylist may be even harder. I've been through 6 different stylists in the past 2 years. I finally found a love (hair) connection with Rachel, a fellow ginger! She is great with reds, but I know she loves all the colors of the rainbow and does precision cuts as well. If you are looking for a place to call your (hair) home, I highly recommend giving Rachel and Alchemy a try. read more

I came into Alchemy yesterday for a consultation with Andrea where we talked about cutting my hair around bra strap length or a bit under my collarbone/shoulders. After the consultation she offered to cut my hair same day which was great. At the end of the appointment I ended up with hair just above my shoulders which was much shorter then we agreed on, and hair that was still damp at the roots. When I want something then I want it that day. I'm not an appointment making type of person. I have horrible experiences going to local salons. I tried to go to the modern ones close by but they were all booked. Every salon might as well erase that "walk ins welcome" because it's impossible to actually walk in to a nice modern salon to be seen right away. I was ready to branch out of Escondido since the two salons I walked in to couldn't take me so I called Alchemy before I made the drive over there. Luckily Ashley was available to take me so I drove right over. She sat me down and we talked about exactly what I wanted. My hair grew out from the last time I had it cut so I needed layers. She gave her suggestions as well which I agreed to. She took her time cutting my hair and even made a comment my hair before was uneven. Lol. I never noticed. I was very pleased with my visit. I really wanted to love this place - Diana cut my hair into what was supposed to be long layers. Unfortunately, the cut ended up looking like a bob with extensions underneath. There was a strange build up of weight at the mid-length. I called twice after to get it altered, and each time I was told that Diana would need to give me a call back. I never heard from her. I found this place based on a recommendation from a friend. I saw Betsy for my hair. I had previously been going to another salon, but it recently closed. I was concerned about getting my highlights from the previous salon to match, but Betsy was flawless on getting the color right. She is quick and does an excellent job. She was extremely rude and kept saying "it's up to u" when I asked for recommendations for a style that would suit me. I wanted to get up leave but by then she was washing my hair already.
