***PLEASE READ THIS WHOLE REVIEW*** Let me preface this review of Misty and Blu August Salon by saying that I am VERY particular (picky really) about my hair stylist. I have incredibly difficult hair and I do not trust just anyone to touch it! My hair is super curly/frizzy. I straighten it and color it red (with highlights), so it takes a real professional to handle my hair challenges on so many fronts. Misty is amazing!!!!!!! I can't say enough good things about her! She has been coloring my hair for over a year and a half now and does a great job achieving the color I want. She always listens to me and tweaks the formula based on my requests. I get so many compliments on my red hair! Reds are very hard to get right...but Misty does it every time and it lasts!!! Plus she gives me a cute haircut to boot and charges very reasonable prices! Now for the frosting on the cake. I was going to another stylist to get the Yuko permanent straightening. I was frustrated as my curly roots were not taking to the product the way I hoped. As it turned out, it was not the product at all, but the technique of the stylist. I switched to Misty and entrusted her to do the Yuko process on my hair. Boy am I glad I did!!! Misty is so meticulous and careful. She goes close to the root, but monitors the process so closely as to not damage the hair. Misty takes her time (no short cuts here), but still goes at a nice pace. Bottom line...my straightening turned out GREAT!!!!! I love how straight and healthy it looks! I bought the living social deal: $39 for a haircut, shampoo, style, scalp massage, deep-conditioning treatment, blow dry, and non-alcoholic beverage. Misty is REALLY friendly, and her shop sure is cute. It was easy to get an appointment with her on short notice. Beyond that, I really felt the experience was a little lackluster. The way she cut my hair was fine, but she didn't style it at the end. The best part of going to have your haircut is leaving with a picture perfect style that you don't have to worry about doing yourself. Misty blew dry my hair, but didn't straighten or style it in any way, so I had to run home and do it myself before I went out that day. That's annoying. There technically was a scalp massage... but no longer or better or different in any way than what any hairdresser does when they are scrubbing the shampoo into your hair over the sink. I guess I just left feeling like I didn't quite get what I paid for. Sure, $39 is cheaper than I usually pay for a haircut, but my usual haircut includes styling, so I'm not sure it was actually a better deal at all. Please read!! I just had to write and update I've had wavy hair my whole life not straight and not curly so I was never happy! I could never get it super straight even when I spent hours and I could not get perfect curls either. Misty was so knowledgeable and told me yuko straightening would be perfect for me of course I had to do research and finally took her advise! WOW is all I can say I wear straight hair everyday now and it takes me less than 15 min and no product just a blow dryer with an attachment ! My hair has never looked so good it looks thin which I love cuz I have 2 heads of hair perfect for anyone with hair like me. I got the groupon. The owner was booked so I went with Kathleen for highlights and a cut. Highlights looked great but the cut was the worst I have ever had. I said I wanted a trim and left with 7 inches of hair gone and a very choppy cut. I can see the chunks that were cut out and the lines in the layers. It's not blended at all :-( I'm very sad about the entire thing. I spent 80 for cut and color so i guess i get what i paid for. The owner looks like she does good work. Wish I would have got her. Update: Kathleen has been let go. Misty really wants to make it right and try to correct the cut. I am preggo and had a maternity shoot on a Sunday. I saw the Groupon for this location and called to see if I could get an appointment on a Sunday. I found out you have to text to ask for an appointment which seems to be a trend in hair salons. I texted and got a reply in a about 10 min. The owner texted to let me know know they are closed on Sundays. I kept looking and could not find anyone else open. About 10 min later Misty texted me again saying that she would be willing to come in on a Sunday. I was VERY thankful! I warned her that I wanted color, highlights, a cut and a style for my shoot. I have long thick hair and normally it takes at least 3-4 hours to get this done. She insisted she could do it in 2 hours. I told her a trusted her and came in. Misty was amazing. She got all that done in 2 hours and 5 min. I was VERY impressed. She also let me get ready for my shoot there which was very nice. I highly recommend seeing Misty. She is great! I had the $69 Groupon package but I wanted extra things and I have long thick hair so it was an extra $65. It was still a very good price for a great cut and hair color. read more

Aside from an amazing haircut, this place is priceless when it comes to their service. I see people on here complaining about what really doesn't matter. Yelp is here to help you find businesses with great products and services...not to nit pick about things that don't really matter. What matters is that Blu August is a business with heart. They not only are obviously passionate about their work but they truly want your business. I think young business people should take advice from the women at this salon because they know what really matters. Walking in, I was immediately introduced by Kathryn. Not a dull moment let me tell you! Talk was easy, did not seem fake all while making sure I got what I wanted. My husband tagged along with the little one and was walking outside the salon (I think mostly in fear of the bad rap he would get about being in a salon). On more than one occasion, the ladies (Misty & Kathryn) tried to get his attention to welcome him into a seat in the well air conditioned salon. Once they did get his attention and after he was seated, he was offered a beer (Score!) and I think, completely fell in love with the idea that salons weren't so bad after all. So not only was I impressed, but (Thank the Lord!) so was my husband. Long story short, we are all human. We may forget something or misunderstand what customers want. It happens. What I am trying to convey is that Blu August is well aware of this concept but in spite of negative things that may happen, THEY WANT TO MAKE IT RIGHT! They want their customers happy and to COME BACK and they will do whatever it takes to do it. I commend the ladies that work here dealing with the negative feedback they often get. I have found my new hairstylist!!! Im very very careful when it comes to my hair i cant just trust anyone that calls themselves a hair stylist... Anyways i found Blu August Salon on yelp and decided to give them a try because they are so close to where I live. I booked an appointment with Misty and omg!!! Im so so so happy!!! Im very conservative with my hair I like it really long but Misty gave me her opinion on how much at least should be taken off and i was ok with it. I appreciated her hearing me out and not taking initiative and doing what she wanted. When she finished cutting and blow drying it still looked long and she had taken 2in off!! I got long layers as well and straight cut bangs and i feel so pretty again!!! I was disappointed at first because of Misty's rave reviews on Yelp, but was not disappointed after meeting Erin. This salon is quaint, small and intimate. It almost feels like you're at your friends house getting your hair done. It's relaxing and not overwhelming, like most salons are. Erin has given me highlights twice now and I have loved them! I bought a groupon and then made an appointment with Erin. She was super nice and friendly and even started on my hair early since I arrived early which was great. I ended up cutting off 5 inches and she did a fantastic cut. Exactly what I wanted! I also wanted to get a balayage and showed her a picture of how I wanted it to look but then end result didn't look that much different than my original color which was disappointing. She claimed that it was just the lighting and that's why some of the highlights weren't that noticeable but in all honesty it doesn't look much different. I originally heard about this salon from my boyfriend, who loved the fact that he could get a beer at 10 am while he got his hair cut. He raved about the service and the owner. When the salon had an offer come up on groupon, I decided to buy it. I had been wanting to get my hair cut for a while, and my hairdresser had moved. So I figured I had nothing to lose, right? (well, except several inches of hair) Because of the rush the groupon created, I had a hard time getting an appointment as quickly as I wanted. Definitely my fault for not being more proactive, and once I got things nailed down, Misty was great about keeping me in the loop if she had any cancellations or openings. I went in ready for a drastic change. I have very thick hair, and when I was going in for a cut, it was incredibly long. I had decided to donate my hair to Locks of Love and Misty was great in helping me prepare myself for that. I cut off a total of 11 inches and I could not be happier with the results. Misty could tell I was nervous (I hadn't had a drastic haircut in almost 10 years), but she definitely made me feel at ease. We put my hair in a braid and lopped it off! I asked her when I could re-book to get the treatment and she said no worries, she would fit it in that day. It was so nice and convenient for her to make the time to get everything done at once so I didn't have to come back at a later date. My hair looks and feels amazing. Kelly just started using this new blonding on me and I am so blonde and SILKY smooth. She used to work at detour and they wouldn't let her use certain products, but this new salon has a lot more of a creative "home vibe." Detour was just too open and not very relaxing. The owner at Blu August is a very friendly and warm woman from the east coast, and the overall decoration of the salon is a significantly more relaxing atmosphere compared to detour. They also use all organic product and carry Kevin Murphy! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!Kelly will always be the only person I trust with my hair. I don't know anyone who takes more pride in their work. Not only was Misty able to fit me in on short notice but she managed to fix my seriously messed up hair. I've had black hair for over 10 years and I recently started messing with it which eventually got so bad I had to go to a professional to get it fixed (total and complete mess). I've been disappointed by hairstylists too many times, it's probably because I have such high expectations. I was very thrilled today after my appointment with Misty because she truly is one of the best people who have done my hair. Misty is one of the MOST organized and focused people I've met in my life which are qualities that are so rare to find in people - she responds to messages promptly, explains everything thoroughly, and does everything she says she'll do. She is always on top of her things. It's quite impressive actually. Extremely professional. Her personality is pleasant and relaxing, she is a very warm and welcoming person. I was anxious before my appointment but she made me feel comfortable and it was fun chatting with her while getting my hair done. She asks you if you want anything to drink. She even offered me some soup she made herself heehee how nice is THAT! She picked a great color for my hair, was gentle applying it and didn't get it all on my forehead like previous stylists. She is very skilled and you can tell she knows her stuff. She advises you on what to do to keep your hair in good condition. She took her time with me, did her best to fix the mess I've done with my hair. Gave me an amazing cut which I LOVE!! I never write yelp reviews but felt inclined to do so for Kathleen. I am a super picky person, the kind that didn't see a hair dresser for 11 years as I was sad and disappointed at my hair cut, at age 7. So slightly stubborn and very picky. With that said, Kathleen has done my hair for 3 years now. Sometimes my hair doesn't behave the same due to seasons, sun or chlorine exposure, hormones and overall well being. Kathleen has always worked with me and if it wasn't 110% to my liking always spent considerable time making sure I leave with a smile on my face. For me knowing what I wanted and working with someone who is willing to listen, has always yield the best results, and if not 100% sure what I wanted tried to keep an open mind to the results. Misty is AMAZING!!! Took my daughter to see her yesterday for Yoku Hair Straightening and all I can say is WOW!! She transformed my daughter's lion's mane into BEAUTIFUL straight hair that we can actually run our fingers through! Misty was so awesome that the time to process just floated by leaving us smiling and laughing and having a great time! And the salon is too cute!! So well decorated and I love that it's not a huge salon where there is so much noise going on that it's loud and distracting. Kathleen turned out to be very knowledgable about what my hair needed. I had been going to Supercuts to save money and she put me on the right track to get my hair back in good condition and with the proper cut. She also offered to help me out with my color which I had been ding myself but found that I couldn't get at certain areas such as the back. I am definitely a regular client now. Update - To answer Misty's response, NO offer not to double book was EVER offered. I just do not believe she ever offered ANYONE who complained about being double booked and then not happy with the final result the option to be single booked. There is NO REASON a customer would EVER *choose* to be double booked and have to split their time in a salon with another client that has an appointment at the same time. And to suggest otherwise is lame and untrue. Also , in response to your comment that you would have redone the lowlights - I texted you that it had only been 2 weeks or less and there was NO evidence of ANY lowlights in my hair. At NO point did you EVER say than that you would re-do. Thats strange that you are saying it now , but it was never offered to me prior to posting a negative review. The salon: very cute and quaint, unlike some other salons that make you feel a little lost. Misty, the owner, did a great job with the decorations. Kathryn really listened to what I wanted, which was a fresh and youthful cut that did not require too much maintenance. She continued to ask me questions about my hair routine so that she could trim the layers accordingly. She also showed me a trick to creating loose romantic waves in my hair using a flat iron. I go here to get the Yuko straightening done on my hair and Misty always does a fantastic job. Id post some lovely before and after photos to show you what a great job she did but Yelp apparently only lets you do that if you use their obnoxious phone app they want you to download.
