They offer so many great quality types of skin care, foundations, makeup tools plus, more. Its not a large store but I wanted to see and try everything. Their prices for me were very reasonable. The staff here was amazing. Once I walked into the store I was helped right away and found exactly what I was looking for plus a few other things that I didn't know that I needed. My experience here was so positive. No one was rushing me and the person who was helping me was so knowledgeable plus taught me a few techniques to apply certain cosmetics. Thank you for JD for your patience, guidance, and knowledge. I'm not an MUA, just a makeup lover and wanted to treat myself to the industry-famous Alcone store. JD greeted me and listened to what I was interested in. He presented appropriate options for me while also educating me. JD wasn't pushing product (and didn't need to!) because he spoke about the products integrity and let it speak for itself. I wanted a setting spray for every day, ended up choosing classic skindanavia. I also wanted a tinted moisturizer/tinted something or other as I don't wear too foundation. I described something light go the touch, little to no feeling on the skin, sheer enough to let freckles and birthmarks show but enough pigment to just even out the face. JD recommended a few, we spoke through them, tried them on, and went with Face Atilier Ultra Skin. And y'all this product is LOVELY!!! Ugh top notch I love it. I came in 15-20 minutes till closing, and Lauren helped me replenish my kit with the same fresh + amazing energy I'd imagine someone would receive at the beginning of a work day! Terrible service. Alcone has a great rep for products, but the terrible service just negated that entirely. Two stars because the sales person that helped me ( couldve bn different if i had another rep?) made me feel so incredibly uncomfortable. Talked over my questions immediately, when I asked for more information for different scenarios I was cut off again and again-less focused on listening to me and more on repeating themselves dryly. So, SO rude- my questions were few & reasonable, so i could recommend their products for specific use. Hands down the most off putting and uneasy client facing experience I've ever had. Left feeling like they actually didn't want me to be there or talk to them, like an annoyance. TERRIBLE. Why go back if you're treated this way? Forget it. read more

Had to update after my horrible experience today. My mom and I were shopping for Halloween makeup and we were asking one of the associates (with a leopard print tattoo on the side of his head) questions about the products etc. he had such a sassy attitude and short answers, he was more interested in fixing his own eye makeup than helping customers. I figured I'd visit this store based on the reviews. Meh. From the moment I walked in, two sales associates were having their private conversations and payed me no mind as I was desperately trying to look for a product I needed to restock my kit. So I figured I'd browse their linen closet of a store -_- From the get-go, I was turned off. I am a makeup artist, and I too, work in a cosmetic retail store. As soon as a guest settles in, I immediately ask if I could be of assistance. Being spoiled of that environment, I was disturbed at the fact these associates that work here, handle their guests with such emptiness. I say "Excuse me, I didn't want to interrupt -- where is the Ben Nye banana powder?" ..... "Over there" one of the associates said, and she continued to engage in her conversation. ....so I went 'over there' and asked the girl behind the counter that I would like to purchase a few. Gosh, she acted like I was asking for money out of her pocket. I didn't come in looking for my hand to be held, or a bestie! Learn some customer service skills. As I was leaving, I was then greeted with a 'byeeee, have a good day' ..you didn't acknowledge me when I came in, now you're acknowledging me when I leave? Please. The store is makeup heaven in a very small (small) bottle. The customer service is like that of any store in New York that sees its fair share of celebrities. The sales staff are generally rude and only speak when spoken to. When I spoke to them and asked questions, they answered me very nice and politely. Are they going to come from behind the counter and help you? No. Are they going to go through the draws and pull products for you? No. Are they going to say "Bye-have a nice day?" Absolutely not. But if you are looking for a store that has Ben Nye luxury powders, Ben Nye shadows, RCMA foundation palettes, Eve Pearl concealers and La Femme blushes-this is the place for you. They have Graftobian products, Naked Cosmetics stackables, lip palettes, OCC lip tars and the like. The prices are standard. Come here for makeup products for artistic purposes. Come here if you are a makeup artist and you are looking for amazing tried and true products. Come here if you would rather take the train than buy online for quality makeup for personal use. Running a storefront requires customer service, care and knowledge. Alcone should save their money and stick with the online store. I've gotten a number of things from this spot over the years. Mostly recently a contouring palate, and a contouring brush. - RCMA contouring palette was $30 and while it is the best it took 20 YouTube videos to discover you have to let it sit on your skin and warm otherwise you look covered in plastic. The clerk might have told me otherwise. - My $35 contouring brush's head broke off after less than one use. I thought I got a bargain. I guess not. Today I walked in to buy some banana powder at 3:30p. The holiday hours specified 11a - 3p. I knocked on the door. The woman said, we are closed until 3p. Is it after that? I said, "Yes, it's after 3:30p." She walked away to check her display and I walked away. When did we hire people who cannot breathe and tap their belly at the same time? This store is a shoebox. If three sales clerks cannot handle a tiny store, plus one customer and manage time they don't deserve to be in existence...period. This Alcone is the reason people don't buy from local storefronts. It's not Sephora's fault, or make-up alley or other big make-up chains it's the fact that we have forgotten how to take exquisite care of real live people wanting to buy something. read more

The most comprehensive help I have ever received, anywhere. EVER. I have always been a bit lacking in "girl skills," and I asked several of my friends if they could recommend a store (NOT SEPHORA) where I could really get help, not just to pick out a good foundation color, but show me how to apply it. They all recommended Alcone. I found out why they and all the professionals go there. Jacob, one of their managers, assisted me. He was not only patient and kind, but he REALLY LISTENED. I have been asking some specific questions for years at other "Makeup" stores that were never answered. Jacob not only answered them ALL, but did so with thought, care and consideration. Because of the great experience I had, I subsequently went to their "Day to Night" workshop. About a half dozen of us drank wine, whined about our makeup woes and laughed (A lot) while Jacob took the model from a completely makeup-less face to a full day look, and then through into a full night look. It was very educational because you get to simply observe the whole process ( which if you are like me, was a bit of a mystery). So, if you have sensitive skin, are at a loss as to how to apply the latest shadow, or just need a rocking foundation, Alcone is your destination. PERIOD! read more

This is the place to be! Makeup artist, divas, or the metro sexual who needs some help, lend me your ears! Alcone has been a part of my life for the past 10 years. As a professional makeup artist, i can find the best of the best when it comes to foundation, powders, and plane old makeup stuff. It was here that I discovered a great creme foundation called Dermacover. Now I wouldn't recommend for everyday use, but if you're an actress, or need a concealer (use sparingly) to actually conceal this is the product ; creamy in texture and spreads very well. Also, the application can last for hours and hours. If you want a different makeup/beauty experience, go with your favorite girl/guy friend...and see the other side of beauty. read more

If I could give six stars, I would. I'm a MUA and Alcone was the best place I could possibly find in NYC! I absolultely fell in love the first time I saw this tiny store! It was a couple of days before Thanksgiving and the manager, Jacob, helped me get what I wanted. Then he told that they would have a very exclusive workshop on Black Friday. It was $50 worthy of products and the entire store would be 20% off. So I went! The store was closed for six people and it was so great! After that Jacob continued to help me whenever I had a doubt. When I came back to NYC, last May, Jacob told me that Cozzette himself would give an exclusive workshop and invited me! Oh my roomie! The woman can shop for miles and miles. After demolishing most of Hell's Kitchen we slowly wended our way back to the train to take two sated shoppers home. Walking down the street in the dim twilight, the lights from the store window softly glowed, and as we came nearer, Michelle became transfixed and heeded a voice she could only hear and walked in. Alcone is a shop that while small, is chock full of cosmetics from floor to ceiling. The brands they carry- Joe Blasco to just name one - are for professional makeup artists. The people who toil away making TV, movie, still and commercial faces look perfect buy their tools here. If you need to make a person perfect for HDTV this is your shop. I was a bit trepiditous about venturing inside (no, I didn't say anything out loud) because I had heard from the grapevine that the salespeople were rather rude to anyone not in the business. It was nice to know that the gossip was wrong, The salesperson who assisted Michelle, was friendly, very patient and courteous. She found a terrific foundation- rather hard for her as she's Asian, and a lot of cosmetic companies have a limited range of bases- it gave her a nice glow and was only $27.00. I strolled in here 2 weeks ago on a whim just to scope the scene. As a makeup artist myself I was dazzled and felt like a kid in a candy store. Really beautiful layout, including the downstairs which had lighting, bags, etc for sale. My favorite part was chatting with Tony who was very knowledgable and friendly. I really enjoyed his energy and appreciated how welcomed me made me feel in the store. It always feels great to talk shop with fellow artists. I treated myself to a new blush palette for my kit! They remodeled the store!!! It's still small, but they removed the sample counter and put all the testers in these cool new tables with slots that hold boards full of testers!!! I still stand by my original review but this place is more awesome now because it is insanely organized and you can now see everything behind the counter easily as well. I still don't get the complaints about the staff, they may be helping other people, or playing around with makeup, but I have never just been ignored in here, not once. A small store with only 1-3 people on hand at a time, you can't expect them to drop other customers just to help you! If you wait, they will give you the time to answer your questions too, and if you are curious about products they will show you some basic tricks to using them. *Just understand if you are coming here, this is a store for PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS, they expect their customers to have a basic understanding of the products they sell or knowing the brands they want, this isn't a Sephora or MAC store. Of course anyone is welcome to shop here, but expecting them to teach you how to apply makeup and devote half an hour to finding your foundation shade is a bit ridiculous. Many of the brands sold here aren't well known to the average consumer and some require technique and skill to use.* read more

It's funny, I think a customers experience here may be very much based on who ends up serving them. My shopping experience was actually five star, you have to read on to find out why it's a 3 (actually 2 1/2 ;). I couldn't have had better service than from Jake. He was helpful, patient, gave fantastic advice, but was never the least bit pushy. I listened when he gave some strong recommendations, even purchasing something I wasn't originally interested in, and it turned out to be one of my best makeup purchases, ever. Mostly I knew what I needed when I arrived so I mainly required help finding them (although it's pretty easy as the shop is well laid out). The review would have been five star if one little issue hadn't alerted me to some problems. Later on as I was going over my receipt, I noticed that Jake had run up one of my products under a different product name. It was only a $4 difference between the products, but hey, that's my $4, so I called the shop hoping to a. Thank him for his awesome recommendations, and b. Mention the different product to the one I bought on my receipt and see how he would want to handle it (I live 1 1/2 hrs out of the city). Maybe I'd have let it go, but I'm not in the habit of throwing money away, and that $4 is a nice new powder puff or a third of a jar of RCMA powder. Well, Jake wasn't there, so I explained to the guy on the phone that I was calling to thank Jake for his excellent service yesterday and to mention that one of the products on my receipt was different to the one I purchased and gave the names. This guy told me that they were more or less the same price, there's really no difference between the two pricewice so it's no big deal. He didn't tell me the discrepancy in price (I already knew the price of the foundie). So I said 'yeah, I think at most it's like a few bucks, not a huge deal', at which point he worked out I knew the prices and he immediately got an attitude and told me 'well, there's nothing I can do unless you come back in so I can see a receipt and your credit card'. I told him I wouldn't be able to come in as I don't live in the city, and his response was 'well I can't help you then'. It truly seemed ridiculous - like a throwback to times when companies could get away with poor customer service. I mean, my money was just effectively stolen (doesn't matter that it was a little), and the guy is actually acting as if I am causing him a hassle! The kicker however was when he said he was so happy I had gotten such great service at the store, and that he'd really appreciate me writing a review on Yelp! I couldn't believe the total lack of self awareness. Perhaps it would be better if Alcone gave some training to their staff. Real simple stuff like: treat customers as you'd like to be treated. Bare bones. Then again, if it truly is policy of Alcone to require a customer to travel back to the store in person should there be a mistake with their bill, then we know why Alcone has trouble giving decent customer service. With companies, the mindset/attitude/problems nearly always come down from the top. How easily I could have photographed my receipt and unopened box and faxed, emailed, texted it to the shop and given my credit card details over the phone then and there and had it fixed in minutes if the store and/or salespersons position was about serving customers vs protecting the store from evil customers trying to do the store ill. That all said, I would definitely go back and shop in store, although I will thoroughly check my receipt next time. They have many of the great products I love (some of their stuff is overpriced - especially the Le maquillage or rebranded for consumers Limelight or whatever they call it- PAM in the U.K. is much better) and the range and organization is fantastic for a quick stop in for seeing things in person you've been weighing up about buying online for a while. I actually have no problem with a NY attitude when shopping, I just take it that there is pride in the product/brand that the salespeople really absorb and feel a part of which is cool with me. Try living in or visiting Paris for a reality check. I do take exception to dishonesty and total lack of interest in refunding overcharged bills. read more

Libby tested products to get the best match, recommended things to me and basically spent the better half of an hour just helping me to make the right choices for my skin type. MY FIRST IMPRESSION: Tiny store, but very well lit and the products were neatly organized on their shelves according to their brand names. Everything looked very easy to find. I was greeted as soon as I walked through the door by the staff. Jacob approached me asking If I was in need of assistance. MY EXPERIENCE: I came by today knowing exactly what brand name I was looking for but needed some help picking out colors that would compliment my skin tone. Jacob was absolutely SWEET and SO HELPFUL!! Even thought he was aware that I wasn't going to purchase at that very moment (looking to order online), he was EAGER to help me find the shades that were best for me. He took his time to explain why he chose the colors that he did, and of course he applied the makeup to my face so I could get an idea of what i'll be working with. This was one of the BEST experiences I've ever had at a makeup store and/or counter. Jacob wholeheartedly answered other questions about makeup application in general which put the cherry on top of my experience. My first visit to Alcone on 1/25/2014 was a highlight of my trip to NYC. I went to the store specifically to pick up a prosthetic adhesive for a high school production of Shrek. The item cannot be shipped in the winter. I am NOT a professional make-up artist and have no experience with these products. I was told that this was the place to go for supplies for all of the Broadway shows. I had a million questions and was slightly intimidated about going into the store. However, I was greeted warmly at the door by the entire staff. They asked if I needed any help, so I told them what I needed. They made me feel so comfortable and helped me to select the products that I would need to for the show. They spent so much time with me, and were very patient and kind. They never once made me feel like my questions were dumb or seemed irritated that I was taking up so much of their time. I was mostly assisted by Jake and Amy, but there were two other extremely knowledgeable people on staff that day, and if I asked a question that they knew the answer to, they chimed in and offered their professional advice. I was overwhelmed by their kindness. I realize that they deal with professionals on a regular basis, in fact, the make up artist from a popular Broadway show came in while I was there to pick up his order for the show. Thank you so much for your incredible customer service! I also want to add that they never made me feel pressured to buy anything I didn't need. If fact, they helped to figure out how much of the product I would need for each cast member based on the amount of shows we are doing. They made great recommendations. Alcone is not CVS, where you can take a used makeup product back and get store credit. If you know exactly what you want, and you need a theatrical makeup item NOW, come here. If you know exactly what you want, and you can wait a few days, get your item online, because it will save you a few bucks. If you don't know exactly what you want....you are in a bind, because buying something online is a gamble, but so is coming here. I've had two experiences with the staff at Alcone, one a few years ago, one recently, and neither was great. The first time the guy was simply unpleasant. The most recent experience the guy was friendly and took time to match my skin tone for Mehron Starblend. I think it's fair to acknowledge that. However, what looked great in the store looked bad outside. Because I had opened and used the item I was out of luck. I think that a truly experienced makeup artist would not have even thought of selling me the color he did. It was two shades darker and too pink for my skin tone. I understand that Alcone is not a big business, and they do not extend store credit for used items...and so should you. If you know exactly what you want, and need it now, come here. I visited Alcone in search of Kryolan Professional Makeup and found so much more!!! The Alcone store is small in size but very well organized and carries a variety of brands. The staff was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I met both Libby and Lala, both of whom were very customer friendly. Libby was very patient in testing me for the Kryolan TV Paint Stick and also offered guidance to me and answered my many questions on makeup and application. I spent quite a bit of time here. While Libby attended to me, several other customers entered and I had no problem when she needed to attend to them. As a customer, I understand that sales representatives not only need to serve me but also other customers as well. I came in looking to buy OCC lip tar and figured that since they were way closer than the OCC store, I'd check them out. Mistake...when the salesgirl pulled the lip tar out for me to look at, I thought it was a joke. They were all thrown haphazardly into a clear makeup bag and literally looked like they had been used. Some of the tubes had lip tar on them and the bag they were in was dirty too. Really? Gross. I left shortly thereafter and ended up buying the lip tar from the OCC store after all. read more

In all my years a s aperfomrer and make up artist I have noticed that 99% of make up shops i go into are staffed by the walking dead. unfriendly with zero knowledge or patience. Not so at Alcone. I might be in the minority, but I've had great luck with their website and orders. I ordered the Viseart matte warm neutral palette and it was $5 less than other stores. Not a huge deal, but better than Sephora's price. Shipping was fast and it came in perfect condition. I have yet to visit the store front, but I don't have time for it. As for them advising you on how to use something... You have to ask. They're not going to volunteer that info because they assume you're an MUA or familiar with the products you're buying.
