This is a good, classic Aldi! Not too busy whenever I go on a weekday evening and even when it is busy, the items are usually very well consistently stocked. There was a worker there that noticed that I was struggling at self-check out with a chicken barcode and she came to help me immediately without me even notifying anyone yet. Love her! read more

Aldi is internationally known, I was in Sydney they have them at piers at some of the nicest neighborhoods, so when you see those low prices, rest assured a lot of their products are great quality. I'd say you get your best value in the grocery section. Fresh fruits and veggies, some of their deli products, frozen, and general canned foods. Some of the meats and seafood (a lot appeared to be sourced from Seattle) the prices tend to be pretty competitive but a little closer to market rate places like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Housewares I'd check labels to see if they conform to your needs. I steer aware from some of the prepared apps. I didn't think the quality of those I tried matched competitors in price or quality. But one section people love is the liquor section. Aldi has has a surprising number of award winning spirits and wines. Good shopping. read more

Wonderful staff! I have been to a number of Aldi stores since 1997 and the staff at this store is clean, empathetic and have common sense. The store is clean, well stock and organize. The cashier was wonderful, kind and clean. Obviously, he cleans his hands. I didn't have to wash my items when I got home. My advice is to have the person who stocks the bread to wash their hands or wash/change their gloves. Otherwise, a perfect store. I love it! read more

This location has undergone a facelift and it looks amazing. The location has been revamped and is now a fresh store and I am so happy. The aisles are larger and the overall environment is light and airy. Nice thing about the renovaction is that there are now two entrances to the store: the original one that was off of Broadway and now there is an entrance on Broadway, so you don't have to walk all the way to the back entrance. For people that take public transportation, it will now be easy for them to get to the red line or the 36 Broadway bus with their groceries. Even the staff seemed new and shiny. The lady that took care of me was very friendly. I mentioned to her now much I loved the new layout and look and her face just lit with a big smile as she said thank you. The closest location prior to this was the one on Montrose Ave, near Western Ave. The store itself is amazing, but getting in and out is a nightmare. Now that this location has been upgraded, I can be content to come back here and do all my shopping. Some of my favorite items to eat are at Aldi's and now this one has alcohol. This has always been my go to store for parties. There looks like they have added more speciality cured meats, cheeses and condiments. There is also more organic produce and meats, if you are into that. And of course there are the seasonal items...today I got two packages of turkey and cranberry ravioli. No idea how it will taste, but the concept is intriguing. The hams and boneless leg of lambs were available as well as the fresh cranberries for making sauce. Going to give them a shout out on the prices of the avocados...$0.69 each as oppose to $1.69 at Jewel. I wish that they carried fat free cottage cheese/sour cream...then I would not have to go to Jewel or Mariano's. read more

Definitely my favorite ALDI to visit. Always clean and there is always someone to help unlike other location. Don't go as often as I'd like to because it is not closest to me but I do love this location. I've now visited this Aldi twice since being remodeled and I have to say WOW what a massive improvement. The store has been completely redone and now has lots more space. I love the new produce section and the new selections of fresh fruit. I also like the dual entrances (front and back) and how they have stocked carts in both locations. This store is much easier to move around in when compared with the old. Finally, I'm glad to see they hired new people and are staffing the registers for shorter lines. Big difference than the old. I'm hoping now the will add to the meat section. That's needed but assuming because this just reopened, they are still filling products. But I will say I like what I've seen. read more

Firstly, I shop here all the time. But it's very frustrating when every single time I enter the store, at either entrance, there are NEVER any shopping baskets!!! I have to go searching for them. I find them all over the grocery bagging area or the cashiers have them all by the registers. Secondly, the security guard ladies aren't "securing" anything!!! I don't feel safe. They're either outside on their phones, or sitting on a chair in the corner of the store chitchatting with someone. Also I find the large male security guard sitting on the bagging area counter. Oh, hell to the no. I felt like I was a refugee in some desolate country picking merchandise from C.A.R.E. relief aid packages. Yeah, most items are a little cheaper than anywhere else, but everything is off-brand and speciously labeled. How the heck do their suppliers get away with ripping off so many different companies' branding, I have no clue. They charge a (refundable) quarter to use a shopping cart. They don't take credit cards. They don't accept checks. They don't provide bags or even boxes. OK, I get all of that. The store is cheap, and if you're willing to play by their rules, go for it. But when I see a bag of frozen chicken cutlets stamped, "PACKAGED IN CHINA," I am running as far as I can before I throw up. read more

I'm consistently surprised by Aldi. I'm cheap, I admit it; yet I spend money on nice restaurants and other important things. For groceries, one doesn't need to spend a fortune. I'll got to the specialty store when I need specialty items. But this Aldi keeps getting better and better. I don't really buy meat here and I really go only every 4 to 6 weeks. I spend between $70 and $100 on an over-flowing cart. If I went to Jewel or another store, I'd spend a few hundred dollars a month (at least). I buy some basics and a lot of the special items. I love their Greek yogurt - now in plain, strawberry, blueberry, and vanilla. It is just 89 cents a pot instead of about $1.50 most places. They have sugar free jams too! The selection of cheeses is great as well as new risottos and produce. I always get a few dozen eggs, cereal, frozen fruit, etc. I'm in no way ashamed to shop here, I get good food at a cheaper price. I love to cook so it suits me to be able to get the staples for less. read more

The discounts are far and few between but it's generally well stocked. There's a bit of an issue with cleanliness from time to time, and the stocking staff have a habit of using their giant rolling dollies to stack stock that don't really require such a tool, and they block entire aisles when they do this. They'll often only have two checkouts open, forcing people to block walkways as lines back up, and even then the cashiers stop working to have conversations with customers. read more

The fact that anyone would actually pay for the shopping experience here boggles my mind. I gave it a shot once and that was it. The food? Aldi is just private label of garbage food to begin with (insipid produce, cookies, chips, highly processed snack bars/protein bars, fake olive oil, etc. etc.). The experience? This place makes Walmart look like Dean & Deluca. The service? Take all of your groceries over to a corner and bag them yourself! I will never understand the hype. I didn't believe my roommate when he told me to stay away from this place. I was trying to be objective when going into the store. However, I think the big giveaway was the shopping carts. You had to pay a quarter to get the cart and when you return the cart, you get the quarter back. I thought this was a novel idea until I walked into the store. I think this is more of a theft deterrent than a method for getting the carts back into its proper location. This store smelled like road kill. This place does not have much selection at all unfortunately. Like everyone wants a good deal, so do I. However, all of the items are sold in bulk and the quality of the food, if you want to call it that, is questionable after closer examination. read more

I have not been to Aldi's for awhile since the Walmart Neighborhood Market had opened up in Lakeview, however, I was planning to stop at Target so I I'd thought stop in for find any deals. The store is still dingy but not the worst store I've been in. It seems like they have removed lot of the items and replace them with "specials of the week". The week was electronic tools and grills and other misc items. Prices are still inexpensive. There were only two lanes open with long lines. I really don't think I'd return or recommend. read more

I don't know if Yelp is the place for these types of concerns, but I'll share my experience anyway. I interviewed for a job at this Aldi back in November 2018 and the treatment I got from the store manager (Sam) was simply horrible. I had arrived about five minutes early for my morning interview to a store which at the time was closed for renovations and mostly dark inside. The first thing he said to me was "You were five minutes early, but if you really wanted this job you would've showed up a half-hour early and would've been banging on the door to get in". He later said "I look at you and I ask myself 'where's the energy'?" He then pored over my resume and, apparently believing I was overqualified, said to me: "I'm lost here. Why are you applying for a job with Aldi?" This experience was enough motivation for me to do something which I had never before done in the 25 years since I started my first job at age 16: I wrote a complaint letter to the regional office and demanded a telephone call and apology from Aldi corporate (which I got). The woman I spoke with was Sam's manager's manager and I went off on her, telling her that based on Sam's demeanor during our interview, I would have turned down any job offer from Aldi had I received one. She sounded sympathetic and promised to address it. We left it at that. So, if you are planning to interview at a job at this Aldi, do not tolerate rudeness during the application process. I realize they have a lot of applications to sift through and nobody is entitled to any job, but you are certainly entitled to professional courtesy, especially during such a stressful time as job hunting. read more

Aldi has some pretty low prices to get grocery goods. Things to be aware when shopping here is they do not take credit cards. Debit and cash only. Also, bring your own bags, I don't think they have bags here. There was some paper bags, but they might charge you for that. A good place to shop with low prices and quality products. read more

What happened to this store? What a mess. There are never any carry baskets as you enter the store. You must go to the exit area to get a small basket. They took down some of their covid-19 signage. The place is a disaster. There is no more social distancing marks outside. I try to go during bad weather so that there are not so many people in there without masks and not following the distance sing and directional marks. I only go when necessary and have a specific list so that I am in and out of there in less than 30 minutes. So sad how they have let this place go. read more

I love Aldi! They sell this chocolate cake that I'm seriously addicted to, and they also have the best German chocolate around. No one knows, why pay more for staple foods when Aldi's (German owned company) SMOKES Jewel Osco and Dominick's pricing? I shop on the per unit basis and Costco prices are the SAME as Aldi's. However Aldi's does not charge a membership, you do not have to buy 10,000 rolls of paper towels or toilet paper, and there are more locations, PLUS way faster in and out. I'll be the first to admit that I have been wrong all of these years. I have been a Jewel girl, stretching far back to my high school days, as it was the only grocery store in our town, and I followed through in college, preferring to skip past the Kroger and Dominicks that were much closer to my place by taking a trek out to Jewel out of familiarity. A few years ago, I became obsessed with the self-checkout, a miraculous new system where impatient and control freak buyers like myself could scan and bag (or in my case, triple bag) their own items for quick and easy shopping (even though the scales and computer system did take some growing pains), And, like many people, I signed up for that "preferred card" program a while back, scanning it in during each shopping trip, and seeing that I saved a total of ____(fill in the blank) at the end of my receipt. However, all of these years have past, and an empty pocketbook and downgraded economy later, I have found myself penny pinching in every sense of the word. Gone are the days of frivolous Jewel spending, paying for premium brands that cost dollars above the generic store brand items. Gone are the days of going to Jewel, just to peruse the aisles, leaving having spent $50 on extra shampoo, toilet paper, paper towels, and dog food, as if storing up for Winter. Gone are the days of stocking my wine rack with extra bottles just because Jewel had a "special" on buy 6 bottles, get one half off. And, I, like many others have found myself wandering into Aldi just to see if it made sense to shop here instead of my beloved Jewel, to see if the prices were that different that I could save an additional "x" amount of money each week if I chose this over that. And, I, like many others, realized that Aldi is the way to go. I'll let you know that upfront, I was apprehensive to give Aldi a try. I felt that I was "too good" to go there. Only poor people shop at Aldi, I thought in my naïve and proud mind. But after seeing the amount of deals and that the normal items that I would purchase at Jewel were a fraction of the cost at Aldi, I thought, no, only smart people shop at Aldi! A can of tomato paste being sold at for 35 cents?! Cornbread muffin mix 35 cents? Fiber One bars for $1.89? Holy crap! I hit the grocery store lottery!! I mean, yes, of course I would still prefer to grab my meats and produce from Jewel or Edgewater Produce, but for all the standard stuff that I would normally get pre-packaged at a different grocery store, I could save hundreds of dollars per year picking it up at Aldi instead. And like many others on previous Yelp posts have mentioned, Aldi saves costs by keeping the store like a "warehouse" per se. Items in their original shipping boxes, a small number of staff members on duty, charging you 10 cents per bag (large, hefty bags as Colleen C. mentioned, ones that can very easily be reused). What I like most about Aldi is that they offer very similar products as name brand items for a significant amount less, and they taste similar if not better than those name brand items that I've come to love. This Aldi made a believer out of me, and I intend to shop here for the rest of my lifetime, even if I hit the lottery tomorrow! Some Aldi's even sell Liquor, which is an added bonus! read more

I was intrigued by the concept of Aldi when it was featured in a Trib article. I took my grocery cart and headed to the Aldi in Uptown. It is literally around the corner from the Wilson station and less than a 20 minute walk from the Vietnamese markets on Argyle. Upon entrance, I noticed there is no decor, just a few in-store promotions. The aisles are not labeled. The dry and canned goods are still in the original boxes they were shipped in. Yes, Aldi is basically a bare bones warehouse. There are very few brand name food here. The Aldi brand dominates the store. Everything is dirt cheap. Ridiculous cheap. For example, 8 oz. cans of tomato sauce are 25 cents EACH. On my last trip to Aldi, I purchased 21 items for about $20. Several money saving strategies that Aldi have are: - having very few employees per shift. (Don't be surprised if there is only one or two cash registers open.) - They do not have baggers, but there is a bagging area behind the check-out counters. - Customers must bring their own bags or be charged for them. - Shopping carts are 25 cents per use, but the money is refunded when they are returned. This helps prevent lazy ass mother****ers from leaving carts in the middle of the damn parking lot. (I think all department stores should do this and charge a dollar.) Aldi is the IKEA of grocery stores. The products are cheap, both in price and quality, but shopping at Aldi could provide the needed relief to ballooning food costs. read more

Never again!!! My wife anyways hated this place, but I put up with the crazies inside because of the cheap prices and decent selection of food. Last night I came in at 8pm for a gallon of milk. I expected it to be quick, but I get to the checkout and there is one cashier. She's playing on her phone. The customer is trying to pay with 4 different debit cards. Rather than engage the customer or try to hurry her along she just continues to text away on her phone. The line is 8 deep at this point and even though I'm number 3 in line I leave my items on the belt and walk out. I got in and out of Target next door in 5 minutes. Never again will I come here. The new Aldi is pretty darn spiffy. And it's approx 3 blocks from my house...Location, Location, Location! The store is clean, well organized and the prices are obviously, unbeatable. I wish for a larger produce section, but that is OK Aldi. I understand that packaged foods is your forte, and I will accept and love you for that. Even if I have to deposit a quarter for a cart, and 10 cents for a bag. Because you know what? Those bags are nice. Aunt Jemima meet Aunty J, Cheerios meet Honey Nut Oh's. Strawberries for $1? A whole case? Excellent condition and delicious quality? I'll take it. Meats for about $2 less a pound? Fresh produce in better shape than at Jewel? Cheeses for $2 - $3 less? Like I said, I love Aldi. A lot of the food that's here I can't get anywhere else...so I make the trip. I have a deep and abiding love for saving money. Weird, right? So naturally I've also had a deep and abiding love for Aldi since moving to Chicago. And this is the best one I've patronized thus far. They have a good selection of the basics, always seem to carry the best specialty items, and the cashiers are ridiculously nice (and ridiculously speedy). This one actually has a fairly good produce selection (for an Aldi) and to be honest the quality of produce is better than Jewel, although still not better than your local produce store. But who expects that? I tend to pass over most of it in favor of said local produce store, but for certain stuff (like onions, mini sweet peppers, and bananas) it's cheap and easy. Also not rotten. I'm lookin' at you Jewel. I've also bought all sorts of stuff here like wasabi peas (if only they'd carry those again), fancy balsamic vinegar (I'm an addict), and a fairly decent jar of pesto. Granted, you never know if and when you'll see these specialty products again, but it makes each trip fun, wondering what they'll have this time. Even the basic stuff like bread, milk, cheese, and yogurt is at least a few cents (often more) cheaper than it is anywhere else. Plus their off-brand Nutella is actually equal in taste to the real stuff. And yes. Nutella counts as "basic stuff". The cashiers are friendly and efficient, making an effort at conversation while moving at record speeds to keep the line moving. Highly appreciable. Yes there's a high abundance of food that is bad for you, but they seem to make a pretty darn good effort to stock healthy stuff as well and if you're living below the poverty line (ie me) it's worth the trip. read more
