This store has a lot of great things to offer, but management isn't one of them. Last night I did some shopping in the last hour the store was open. Upon checking out.. no cashiers were at a register. ONLY SELF CHECKOUT. A 70 year old or so women was also checking out. This poor woman could be your parents or an elderly person you know. The manager here wanted to save what $15 so another staff member could be stocking a shelf? Crazy. Absolutely insane. This store is pretty decent overall, but the levels of disrespect this shows for your own staff and your community is just unreal. Whoever staffed the store that night should be deeply ashamed of themselves. The stockholders are gonna be ok. Put a working staff member on registers at all times period. What if someone got injured? The self checkout here has a TINY spot to put your bag. Move the bag a bit and the scale freaks out. I can think of endless reasons for a cashier to be working at all times. Think of members of your community who need help if you run a FOOD STORE. Think of ways to improve your business rather than screwing customers. What about people who are neurodivergent and have disabilities? All to save like $100 a week. I live in Skokie and was headed back from the city to Jewel, when I passed Tony's and decided to stop in there instead. I had never been and wanted to see how their bakery compared, for a birthday dinner for my mom that night. I was looking for a red velvet cake, but all they had was chocolate or yellow plus a few others. I did find a jumbo red velvet cupcake which the bakery lady was happy to add birthday decorations to, plus I got their pull apart yellow and chocolate cupcakes for everyone else which we also decorated. I'd never heard of pull apart and they were so cute! Prices were great too and this selection was perfect for our small family. They were delicious!! At checkout I saw a jumbo balloon and after asking the florist the price, I grabbed that too. I asked her how long it would last and said she had just inflated it that morning so it would last a few days. I was very disappointed to find it looking deflated by the time I got home!! I hate to say bad things but too many bad experiences require it. Tony's advertises D&W corned beef at discount prices in the deli but it is never in stock, and the clerks refuse to substitute what they do have in stock. The register prices regularly do not match the advertised prices, even when I follow the procedure and enter the phone number at the register. I have wasted countless hours getting partial refunds at the service counter. What should have been the final straw was finding a charge for a few dollars for a plant that I did not buy and actually never saw in the store. Still, I went back and kept checking my receipt, with frequent issues. No more. This does not seem accidental to me. Rather, it seems like a plan to maximize profit. I have shopped here regularly since they opened, almost ten years ago. This is a true Love/Hate relationship. Keep reading to find out what happens in Episode 1. On the positive side, Tony's offers the best variety of produce, bread, 'cultural' foods and pricing in the area. Solid deli and bakery as well. On the average side, lies the butcher and seafood. You don't need to try it - one look in the counter will tell you everything. On the negative side, and it is a really huge one, they play games with their pricing in a way that no other supermarket comes close. Examples - a huge bold sale sign in front of all the shredded cheese that says $1.99. You grab one thinking that's a steal, only to find out you had to buy 3. Cashier charges you $3.99. Turns out the 'when you buy 3' was at the bottom of the sale sign in a very small font. They do that with everything. The majority of the sales are when you buy multiple of the product, and if you don't look carefully you won't see it. Eggs seem cheap. Sure. If you buy 5 dozen. Cause everybody needs 5 dozen eggs. To compliment that fine attribute, the legit sale items that don't require multiple purchases don't always show up on the register so you get charged the full price. And you won't figure that out till you look at your receipt. I often have to take photos to show the cashier lest you wait forever while some unavailable person never goes to find out what the item should cost. I have talked to the store managers a number of times about the issue, and they just shrug their shoulders and try to find a way to show how you were wrong. Or they blame the private equity type firm that took over Tony's. You'll also find they never ever have enough cashiers so the checkout lines are terrible. And sadly, many of the customers are from lower incomes, and aren't the cheeriest, understandably, but that affects the employees, so the entire place exudes a vibe of misery. Combined with the sick game show you'll find yourself on while you figure out 'what's the catch on the sale price.' makes a trip to Tony's an adventure that isn't always worth the savings. I went shopping there today, there produce is sub par, the green onions were horrible with huge roots, I bought a daikon with no leaves, they're typically trimmed when trying to hide freshness. The meat used to have a longer date range now it's all 3 days from expiration. I went through checkout and the employee couldn't figure out a price so he made me run my link card and credit card three times, then I asked I've used my link card, when I swipe my credit card it's just for a two dollar remainder he said yes and charged the whole thing to my credit card. So I asked someone who looked like a manager for help and she said go through aisle one and she'll take care of it. Well after the checker scanned all of my groceries again she said she couldn't return the amount to my credit card and I was told to go to customer service. So I went to customer service and waited in line for about 10 minutes. I had my receipt and was told they had to scan all my items again. I have just had major back surgery and all this extra time was causing me excruciating pain. Finally they charged my Link card and returned the money to my bank account. I said thank you and left, came home and they didn't even give my my Daikon as they had to figure out what it was then weigh it and never gave it back to me. What should have been a 45 minute trip to the store took almost two hours having to check out three times leaving me in horrible pain and then not even giving me all of my groceries. I originally gave a 5 star review to this store a few years ago. Since then it's become apparent that their website is the worst of the major food store chains even with a fairly recent so-called upgrade of their site.. They do provide their weekly print ad on their site, but their search function is terrible, plus they only indicate prices on their print ad - not on the website. There is no way to find prices online on items nor shown on the print ad and Buy One Get One items don't show what the p[rice for one is (Jewel and others do)., I would give them even lesser stars, but the human personnel in store are terrific. The website though is terrible and frankly any of my general shopping is done at other stores. I only shop Tony's if there is something on the print ad I want. In essence I don't consider Tony's for any items not shown "clearly" on their print ad. Too bad - and bad for them business-wise. read more

Tony's is located on Lincoln just north of Foster Ave. This use to be a Dominick's, but we all know what happened to Dominick's. Many of the stores were converted to Mariano's. This was the first time I have been to this location. That being said I don't understand how this store can have such inconsistent reviews. As you may know there is a small parking lot at street level along Lincoln Avenue, but it fills up quickly. There is also a parking lot on the second level. There are 2 Ginormous elevators bigger then a hospital elevator. You can almost pull your car into it and go down to the first floor. How cool would that be a drive through grocery store. Here's what I don't understand. The store is clean very well stocked and has almost anything you want. I hear they run specials every week. I bought about 4.5 lbs of cod for $4.99/lb & 2 thick rib eyes about 1 1/2" thick for $4.99/lb. they have a nice salad bar, hot food bar a small sushi selection, cheeses, produce, bakery area nice size meat area, yet they have a low rating. They also have a nice deli area where I grabbed a corned beef sandwich w/mozzarella. Ok so it's not Manny's or Kaplan's, but it's also not $15 for the sandwich. When I'm in the area I will probably stop by, but I will make sure I eat first so I don't start throwing anything into my cart that looks good. read more

This Tony's Finer Foods location is more way entertaining in comparison to the one on Elston in the Irving Park neighborhood. Was I entertained? Well, let me put it in this way. When I was a kid, I was one of the most "well-behaved" girls you would ever meet. See, rarely can anyone use this adjective to describe a kid at a tender age of 11 nowadays. When my mom told me to sit on a bench and to wait for her to finish shopping at a nearby store, I wouldn't even move an inch! I was never rebellious, never loud, and never embarrassing her in public. Ok, what was that story related to my shopping experience at this Tony's? There were too many temptations in the store, but I ain't moving! I was a great kid, and now I'm a responsible adult, who loves her fruit and veggies. Unfortunately, I couldn't find much in these categories at the prices I wanted to pay. If there were a Ce*mak Produce next door, Tony's might as well shut down their produce section because Ce*mak's selections on fresh agricultural products would push Tony's out of the competitions. I purchased two (2) large cantaloupe (2 for $4), 5-pk fresh garlic ($1.49), and 2.82-lb of McIntosh apples ($0.88/pound). I wish I could get all my grocery shopping done at Tony's. With the prices and selections they offered, I would have to make it up at one of the Hispanic grocery stores in the neighborhood. There were lots of temptations if you didn't come here with a full stomach. The bakery, deli, and fresh juice bar would certainly snatch some of your money away if you weren't careful on budgeting. The Lavazza coffee bar was another satanic move. Everyone except Jesus would most likely say "yes" to the treats. I found the large eggs (2 dozens for $3), 2% milk ($2.50), and fresh-squeezed OJ (5 oz. for $4.69). Everything came to $18.58 after tax. My minor temptation of the day was the OJ I found at their juice bar. Did that even constitute as a legitimate temptation at all? Anyways, I'm going back to my Hispanic grocers. I stop in from time to time when I need something quickly and don't have time to go farther away, but this will never be my "go to" grocery store. The arrangement of products is confusing, the front of the store is cramped, and random items are woefully overpriced. They do have a good selection of what grocery store owners like to call "ethnic" items, and there is free parking, although navigating the parking lot without hitting anyone requires a bit of skill. Honestly, whoever's in charge of creating the store's identity seems to be confused. I decided to grab some string cheese sticks, I purchased all my items and got into the car. I grabbed the pack of String cheese sticks and I ate one of them. The worst customer service I have ever experienced. Tony's does not exactly shine in the customer service area, but this is a new low. This guy (nor any other member's of the staff who were present) could care less. Went home and placed an Instacart order from Aldi. Would have gone to the physical store, but I was pressed for time. I do not have any stock at home so decided to ho to a grocery store. I went to Tony's Fresh Market since it is just nearby my house. When I came inside, I observed that the store is hefty and spacious, very clean and organized. All of the produce are so fresh including the meat, fruits and vegetables. I also love that you can find almost everything you needed in here plus, they have a lot of stocks of every item. The staffs are also friendly and helpful. I bought a lot of goods that is perfect to last for at least two weeks. I then proceed to the counter and was amazed because the checkout was really quick and as I read my receipt I realize that the store is cheaper than any other grocery store which is also great. This is our go to place for fresh fruits and a few Indian veggies. Like any other store, you choose what to buy from certain places and this is really good and affordable when it comes to veggies and fruits. Their international food section also has Indian groceries,though limited and often big packages unlike proper Indian stores ,it really helps when you have to pick something on the go and it's right there than going all the way to a proper Indian store! *Update* After visiting every other store nearby, this is one of the few stores that offer package-less fruits and veggies. They do have wrapped or packed produce but have unpacked ones too. Don't have to unnecessarily buy a ton of plastic wrapped produce! Berwyn store. Produce (grape tomatoes) are often slimy. Eclairs were either stale or just really poor quality. Sale items often out of stock. Many sale items require you to buy multiple quantities. Sometimes I only want ONE! Required you to create an account to clip their coupons. Just too many games to play here. Store is very crowded and difficult to get through aisles no matter what day or time I shop. I stopped shopping here. The checkout people were usually very nice and friendly. I now go across the street to Aldi's for low prices without coupons or need to buy more than one item to get a good price. read more

I bought a personal watermelon and when I got it home I cut it open. It was old. The seeds were black and the fruit was dry. This is the second time I bought fruit that was old or inedible. That is totally unacceptable! I don't understand how you can think that the fruit that is old is saleable. I am learning that I cannot trust your fruit. OH MY! Went to this store today because we were in the area to get the pooch groomed! Have never had really good luck with the store on Elston as far as meat is concerned and we normally shop at the Tony's in Niles which is amazing! We decided to try this Tony's as it is relatively new and the few times we had been here it was fine. Not so much today! We purchased the beef tenderloin in the bag for 6.99 a lb a ridiculously good deal ! The butcher even went to the back to get some because the case was pretty empty. I happily picked what looked like a nice one for 29.00. Got home, cut open the bag and almost passed out from the smell of rotten meat! Tony's fresh market is a hit, mostly a miss. The Elston store is a nightmare. Although, aside from trying to check-out the 2500 N. Central store has it going on. The employees at this location are very friendly and quick to help you. The Elston Ave. store is dingy. The employees are more interested in socializing amongst themselves. The customer service is appalling. It never fails me as when asked for liquor from the locked display case I takes an act of Congress. Checkout lines are 6 deep with only 2 full service attendants. The self checkout has 2 to three attendants. But, there are 3 to 4 employees watching the lines moving at a snail's pace.There is not a reason or excuse that when I go into this store that I must spend a half an hour trying to purchase 2 items. I used to really like this store pre-Covid, but I don't know if it changed management or what, but it is not the same now. They used to have a lot of middle eastern breads and I think an eastern European influence in the deli and bakery, but I think it's now more Hispanic focused (which may be a plus for some). I also used to like to get meat here because it was one of the few places to get stew meat and pork shoulder at a good price, but I won't do that again. In both of my recent instances the meat was super tough.....which doesn't happen when I buy the same cuts elsewhere. All of their products are so cheap than other store, and all of it has a reasonable prices. That is why many of their customers are coming back again and again. Plus, their store is very big, clean, and organized. They also has a veggies, fruits, and even flowers that are always fresh. Everything there is easy to find, and also you can buy anything with a reasonable price. Once an old Dominick's and then a new Dominick's and now a revamped Tony's Finer Foods. And this has happened all within five years at this location. A change for the good and a change I can really get into. Tony's is a typical grocery store, but with so much more. Do you want a Natural, Organic and Gluten-free section? A Lavazza Coffee & Gelato Bar? An extensive International section? A Juice Bar and freshly made Guacamole and Salsa? A very large Deli section? A Meat counter with great steaks? Tony's has all of this along with a great selection of traditional grocery items. My favorite things at Tony's are their freshly made warm Spanish Rice, their fresh Salsas, their Lavazza Coffee bar, their interestingly fun and adventurous International section (check out the Chocolate!), they have a great Liquor section, their fresh squeezed OJ is killer and their bakery with the petite dessert section is off the chain folks. Tony, stick around you have made a friend. I enjoy all you have to offer. Great prices, excellent selection and just an overall great grocery store.
