Cool air conditioning inside! They don't have sanitizer hand wipes at the front so bring your own if that makes you comfortable. The produce section when you first walk in is huge! The choices are fresh and ripe. I like their produce better than Jewel. The chicken that they have without antibiotics or hormones is Purdue. They have angus ground beef. No self checkout but the staff is super friendly and helpful and it goes quickly. There is usually more than one cashier. read more

What led me to Cermak Fresh Market was its weekly sales published that I receive on a weekly basis. Every week I view coupons with sales from grocery stores like Jewel Osco, Mariano's, Fairplay Foods, Aldi and Pete's Fresh Market comparing the different prices of foods I love that are on sale. And out of the five Cermak locations listed, this location was the closest to me. Leaving work at the time, I made it a priority to drive down W Irving Park Rd because it puts me near this location that is tucked away on N Kedzie Ave. The location has its own private parking lot with plenty of space for the amount of customers it serves daily. What I do not understand about its layout is that its only entrance sits on N Kedzie which can be very hectic while exiting either way, mostly during the afternoon hours. With that, I recommend choosing wisely when you visit or you may be stuck in the parking lot waiting to exit or stuck in traffic for a long period of time on N Kedzie Ave. That alone can discourage anyone after grocery shopping, especially while dealing with impatient drivers, too. In comparison to all of the other grocery stores I have mentioned like Jewel Osco, Mariano's, Fairplay Foods, Aldi and Pete's Fresh Market, Cermak Fresh Market is the smallest yet still has everything you may need. Designed more as a neighborhood grocery store I imagine that it can get pretty congested at select times of the day. And its aisles are about two carts length side-by-side. During my visit, the shopping cart I grabbed appeared to be sprayed down which was a huge kudos with everything going on in the world right now. I do love that grocery stores like Cermak Fresh Market are taking precautions to reduce the coronavirus spread because customers are in-and-out like clockwork throughout the day. I visited solely to purchase a couple of weekly sales of my interest: the Hinckley springs purified water, and a 6 pack of Sprite were two of my main purchases; both were $2.99 each! Last month, I was bummed because I missed the chance to grab a 6 pack of Pepsi, but seeing the same deal with a different option like Sprite assured me that they will list it at some point again. Overall I had a pleasant shopping experience at this Cermak Fresh Market location and I anticipate seeing its weekly sales. My return at this location will be based solely on the sales I see as the time goes on because I do not have the patience to deal with traffic in the area for nothing, plus it is not on a driving route I frequent. ~Blessings~ Thomas G read more

I like this kind of small farmers market in the area. They have a great produce - fruits and vegetables, as well as great sour cream and feta. Also a lot of meet and Mexican stuff. This has been my weekly grocery shop for a few months now. I can usually find everything I need with a few exceptions (bagels [sometimes], bone-in skin-on chicken thighs, sweetened canned pumpkin... and I usually buy LaCroix elsewhere because it's ridiculously expensive here). The meat is very good, especially their angus ground beef. The cheese is great, and so is the selection of locally made guacamole and salsa. The vegetables and fruits are usually fresh (though I've noticed the asparagus often looks a little old). I love that they have such a large variety of Mexican sweets--each week I pick out something new to try. My biggest complaint, though, has to do with movement, both in the store and in the parking lot. Inside the store, it's always busy, and the aisles are spaced very close together; I'm always either narrowly avoiding collisions or in someone's way, especially between the produce and the frozen chicken. As for the parking lot, it's easy to enter coming south on Kedzie, but quite difficult to exit; there's often no visibility to the north because of the large trucks that are always parked by the driveways. I really wish that they had another exit onto Berteau, or that the curb on the east side of the parking lot was a no parking zone--would make things safer for everyone! read more

I like this Cermak Produce location; it's much larger than the one on North Ave. in Humboldt Park. It's not impossible to walk to from my apartment in Albany Park, even though it can be difficult somewhat when the grounds are full of dirty slushes and ice. Anyways, I was glad that hubby and I made it there. The fresh produce department is just beautiful. We picked some of the fresh fruit on sale for the week. For example, $0.99 for one (1) box of strawberries? Yes, I'm getting them. How about $0.10 for each California naval orange? Please count me in! I love oranges and apples. Gala apples are priced at $0.99/lb. currently this week. There are many deals to be had for sure. We also picked up a two (2)-liter bottle Inca Cola, one (1) bag of seedless grapes ($0.99/lb., for approximately $2), one (1) bundle of unripened bananas, one (1) 8-lb. bag of potatoes, and two (2) dozen large eggs (on sale...2 for $3). The total came to $15.62 after tax. I think Cermak Produce is the winner of the grocery-store competition in the Albany/Irving Park neighborhoods. From now on, I will make a point going there for my grocery shopping. That's definitely worth of a twenty (20) to twenty-five (25) minute walk in my book. read more

I would not purchase anything that is not actual fresh produce or meat. Purchased frozen pizzas today and they were ridden with mold. Since frozen food cannot mold, that means the pizza had time to defrost, grow mold and then was put back in the freezers. read more

I despise grocery shopping, but there's something about Cermak that makes it more enjoyable. I tend to do some deep thinking around the meat counter and love people watching. Weird, I know. I love walking right into all the produce so that I can get my shopping started immediately. They have a great selection of every fruit and vegetable I've ever needed! Good prices as well. There's always someone refilling and they're always helpful if I'm looking for something. The arrachera taco meat is our favorite. Get it once a week! They have a very good selection of pre packaged meats as well. Some are fresher than others. I like that they have my chobani yogurts, a decent frozen section, rotisserie chickens, and Latin American cookies and treats of my childhood. They basically have everything you need for a grocery trip! I also like the store because it's not overwhelmingly large. Only downside is the parking lot entrance. It can get clogged and then you're blocking Kedzie. They have another parking lot (with an awesome tamale stand!) across the street though. I'm just too lazy. read more

The bread as well as some of the other breads sold there always taste like soap as if the overpowering fragrances from the soap and detergent aisles make it into the breads because of how close together the aisles are and/or a problem with ventilation and probably the storage structure of those items within the store. There is also a lack of flavors and brands in the ice cream aisle as well as the yogurt aisle. Would be nice to find those frozen Pepperidge Farm cherry and raspberry turnovers. The meat department smells too strongly. Maybe some odor absorbers are needed. At least the security works as they kicked out a drunk guy who was stealing stuff and the the guy said 'I am not come back anymore!'mI thought that was hilarious as s**t. read more

I pretty much gave up on this place when it comes to their bake goods. Many times I bought either a break or a cake and most times it's not the freshest but when I bought a fresh leches cake, it immediately smelled like rotten milk. The absolute best (and freshest) produce in my area of the city. The weird thing? It's also the cheapest... by FAR. They've got all the regular stock in the produce section (a sizable part of the store), and lots of ethnic/niche items that i'm not familiar with, all well-priced. They appear to have a lot of product turnover. There's always at least two stock guys on the produce floor, arranging and refilling the bins. Their deli section, which is quite limited, honestly, still has SHOCKINGLY low regular prices, and when something's on sale, it's ridiculously cheap. This past week, i bought good-quality Black Forest ham slices for 2.99 / lb. I've never seen it for less than 5.99 lb (on sale). INSANE. Their meat / poultry / seafood selection is pretty good. I don't really buy much beef, so i can't attest to the quality. Chicken and pork has always been good, and the frozen seafood (they have fresh too) has always been dependable, and cheaper that anywhere else. I LOVE their brand of fake crab meat. (yeah, i'm not rich, unlike all you high-rollers that only eat REAL crab). Regular packaged / bagged / boxed / canned grocery items are sometimes a bit pricier than at Jewel, but still fair priced. Their brand name dried beans / lentils / pulses are well-priced. If you don't mind skipping the name brands, they have bulk generic versions that are ridiculously cheap, especially when on sale. Mayocoba beans, 99 cents / lb on sale. Usually $3.00 / lb elsewhere. 49 cents / lb for lentils (which i LOVE) on sale. WHO can beat those prices? It doesn't appear that they do their own baking (maybe i'm wrong) but i did notice that they seem to sell a lot of baked items from local Chicago-area sources, unlike many other mainstream stores that get their baked goods from out of state. It's fresher and you're supporting local businesses, what could be better than that? Oh, and they're even cheaper than my beloved Tony's, my next go-to stop for baked goods (btw, Tony's has great italian sausage). Only complaints / disappointment: their Italian sausage was absolutely horrible (i'm Sicilian), but, to be fair, it IS a primarily Mexican market, so not really their area of expertise. Go to Tony's or Marianos service meat counter (not the pre-packaged stuff in open refrigerated cases) for that. Also, they stopped carrying my favorite mass-produced Mexican cookie, Poblanas. Could be sourcing issues; they seem impossible to find elsewhere. This small chain of stores is absolutely awesome. I still can't understand how they make a profit (they always seem to be expanding), but i'm not going to question it. First of all, every time I go past, you know, minding my biz, it if it's at dawn or late I get myriad compliments. Which is nice. Second, there's always several food carts selling stuff. The market was lively for a Sunday morning. The heat of the day had set and people were in full "needs-of-the-week" shopping mode. Was not expecting such a grande market, I was like Whoa! The doorway into the market is unusual. After entering an automatic doorway I was puzzled to find the actual entrance. There's a short hallway with goods where most would place shopping carts. A single doorway was there but a lady parked her cart and blocked it, for a second I thought I had entered at the wrong end of the building. Peering into the doorway there was so much stock surrounding it, it looked like a passage into a stock room. Once I got in, I was good. The produce area is immense. I was overjoyed seeing so much green. In general my shopping involves a great deal of produce. Most likely much of their stock is gmo and I won't complain. There are some organic items but you have to read signs. There are unsuspecting finds around every corner. ie I was searching for sour cream. A dairy worker saw me circling and offered to help, he led me to an area with many, many brands. Ended up buying a Salvadorean crema. (Side note: American brands are always white in color. Central or South American brands may add a seed ingredient which gives off a dyed color of orangish-pink. So, don't feel as though it has gone bad. I didn't know this at first, after getting home I tried calling them which was a dead end. Their customer service by phone is nowhere near as good as in-store.The five minutes I was on hold was enough time to Google for an credible answer.) Other cool finds; I found organic powder brands which are well known, as well as other organic products that most consumers (would) request for by name. In the meats department there is a large selection and some ethnic favorites. You could find beef short ribs as used in Korean BBQ (kalbi). The market also offers chilled prepared foods, as well as hot & ready prepared items for immediate enjoyment. Last but not least, they only offer plastic. So if you like paper, bring your own or byo-reusable-bags. Ps There's another reviewer that mentions skipping Whole Foods or Trader Joe's for this market due to freshness of produce. Here's the thing. If you don't care where your produce comes from and are looking for the best in pricing, these kinds of stores are the best place to go. That's a no-brainer. Most of the stuff is GMO and as is the case with gmo produce, it's about selling products dirt cheap. The produce will have a much longer shelf life and if it is Crispr brand, it'll look fresh off the tree to the end (1-2 months). It was modified to look great for a longer period than its relatives the organic or non-gmo variety. Although inside it is breaking down. To me, that sounds fucking disgusting. "Franken-foods" naw. I'm used to what is produced on the earth. Produce that goes bad after a certain amount of time and I see it. I buy produce to enjoy it and its health benefits. Nutritional values are different between the two in a major way. I like knowing which farms produced it and what fertilizers were used in the creation. Abundant stacks of tomatoes, apples, oranges, piles of leafy green kale, collard greens, boxes of mangoes, strawberries, mini portobella mushroom, papayas and much more. It's a mexican grocery store so avocados, limes and cilantro are often very fresh and typically less than a $1.50. Whenever I'm there, there's always a guy stacking produce nicely. Cermak is my goto on picking up fresh produce and prices are good. Meat section has a weird smell of cleaning agents or bleach mixed with barnyard, so I typically avoid getting it. Not being a snob, but I've purchased before and it tastes that way too. More veggies, less meat, better for me anyways. French bread - it's good, soft and chewy too. It's the typical brand in most grocery stores, but it's WARM and fresh sitting in a basket. Also, I've bought this same brand at different places, but it's not as good as here. How they do that? Small hot foods area in the corner, makes for a cheap take out. On the weekends, the parking lot is a mess. I swear they have 3 separate lots, one on premise and two across the street. Fantastic produce at absurdly low prices. I could end the review right here. I've never frequented a place that has so many employees devoted entirely to restocking produce. I've seen as many as four guys moving as fast as they can stacking onions and replenishing avocados, trading out tomato's and piling peppers. I love the fresh pressed olive oil at Stanley's but Cermak is easily 30% cheaper across the board, the sales are incredible and the fruits and veggies are as good or better. They regularly have limes, tomato's, onions, potato's, etc. ten for a buck. Yesterday they had two giant heads of romaine for .99. The selection of vegetables skews Latin but is broad (no shallots or parsley). The fruit selection is more global. But by far my favorite thing about Cermak is the cut, cubed and packaged melons (cantaloupe, honey dew and watermelon) are the same cost as buying one whole. I love grabbing a quart sized container of precut watermelon for $1.29 (.99 a lb). I no longer have to go home and butcher a 10 pounder or take the pipe at bigger chains where I've pad $5 for the same thing. They have good, cheap taziki sauce for about a buck a pint (it's hidden by the fresh pico de gallo and guacamole). Couple all that with it's proximity to the 10 for a dollar fresh pita at Sanabel Bakery across the street and that's a Captain Coupon two for one. I've got a great dinner almost ready to go from the bag after two quick stops. I don't touch the dry or frozen products (too expensive) or use the deli (Tony's has the market cornered in my opinion). But the bolillos are big, fresh and 3 for $1 and the hot carnitas are juicy and $3.99 lb. Winner. read more

Okay, so I'm not going to fulfill ALL of my shopping needs at Cermak, but darn if they don't have great deals on produce. And I'm the type of person who eats enough produce daily that I'm okay with the fact that it might only last 3-5 days. I get fresh fruits and veggies every week anyway, and at these prices, I don't mind buying only what we need for a couple days at a time. Like they do in Italy. Daily trips to the market. I dig it. Haven't tried the baked goods yet, but those tres leches cakes are drool-worthy. On the surface it looks like a big box grocery store (I think it was a Jewel in its prior life...), but upon closer inspection, this place is oozing the ethnic vibe. GREAT GREAT GREAT selection of fresh fruits & vegetables at psychotically low prices. It also has a bakery section that looks like a Jewel display, but it has 'PAN DULCE' instead of donuts. Again, super inexpensive for $0.69/each. Not sure of the other stuff that's on the shelf, but that's okay. The fresh fruits, produce, friendly customers & overall vibe puts this place in my regular shopping schedule. I was there today. They were back to $3.99, those little roasted Pollos. They're messin' with me. I know it. The birds were a little smaller, but that was OK. I wanna say something like my hero Stuie from Family Guy would say, but I can't think of anything. How about "when I rule the world, you will all have rotisserie chicken followed by a swift and painless death.?" Right next to the Pollos are all the pastries. Big hunkin' slices of Flan and individual slices of cake: chocolate, and my favorite: Tres leches. And others. There is a bin of smaller pastries for as little as 79 cents. The cakes slices and flans are $1.99. Whole cakes, which would probably serve around 15-20, are only $21.99. A full Tres leches cake at other bakeries can be upwards of $30. Good old cheap fruits and meats. Its like a Stanleys but you don't have to drive in that mess over there by North and Elston. Make sure you bring cash just in case. Once I only bought a few items and swiped my debit card and it wasn't working. So the lady tried to swipe it...didn't work. So instead of her doing her job and typing in the numbers, she just told me I have to pay for cash. Well the $9 bucks wasn't gonna cut it, so I had to leave items behind. Thinking I had a defective debit card, I go try it else where, and of course, it worked perfectly. ARG Watch out for all those crazy M...people leaving the parking lot. They think they own the road and will ram you if you are just driving past on Kedzie. To the lady who I did my "Just Letting You Know I'm Driving" honk to, and then honked at me because you think if you are leaving the parking lot you get the right away onto Kedzie, you deserved every bit of my middle finger. read more

I am moving away from my neighborhood Cermak and I am super depressed about it. One of my roommates turned me on to Cermak and I've been shopping there ever since. The produce department is incredible, even when the fruit isn't in season. Who can beat 5 large cucumbers for a $1? If I buy the same amount of groceries at Jewel it would almost be double. Today I walked out of Cermak with 6 large bags filled with food and paid under $50! I admit they don't have the same selection as Jewel so you might not find everything you need in a recipe, but they come darn close! I was shocked to read Natalie S's review about the rude employees because I have been meet with nothing more than great hospitality! Sometimes there is a language barrier, due to the fact the store mostly employees people who speak Spanish, but every time I've asked a question they have been more than eager to help me. Anyway, is grocery store is a little gem that offers a great selection of meat, produce, and cool Mexican specialty items. It's a little low brow but it's worth a visit!!! read more

So Cermak Produce is literally down the street from my new apartment which is super convenient for me. The store itself is your typical Mexican grocery store with a large produce section and a very large butcher section. Their Deli deals are pretty fantastic though and they have a decent seafood section. You can also get your standard Mexican spices, tortillas, cheeses etc. As typical of Mexican grocery stores they do not have a large frozen food section as most people make dinner fresh. I for one have been coming here almost everyday to get fresh ingredients for what ever dinner I'm"m making. They also have a built in bakery which offer standard Mexican sweet bread, its not outstanding but its good enough. Where they really stand out is in their hot fresh food section. A couple times a week they offer a 1/2 roasted chicken dinner with rice and beans for 3.50$! That's right a whole meal for under four bucks and it taste great. Also this is one of the few Mexican grocery stores that offer carnitas during the week instead of just on weekends. This past week I tried out their menudo and it was just OK, I have had worst. I have yet to try their birreria but they do make it fresh every weekend. Cermak pretty much has everything you ever want for making a daily dinner but don't expect "organic" anything or "free range" or any other foodie buzz words. read more

Amazing CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP produce and rare stuff (especially conducive to ethnic Mexican dishes) that you won't find at your average Jewel or chain grocery store. 2.) This produce is extremely superior to Andy's Fruit Ranch which is a few blocks north. 3.) A bit small, and therefore better for produce shopping or meat/fish shopping than complete grocery shopping. 4.) The back of the store reeks of fish. 5.) They carry a great deal of Mexican products (yogurts, sodas, candies) for very cheap. They are to Mexico what Andy's Fruit Ranch is to Europe. I am about to find out if you can OD on cherries. They were on sale for 99 cents a pound and I bought about six pounds of them. Seriously though, 99 cents for a pound of tasty cherries? I'm in! I was sad to leave my old 'hood Edgewater Produce, but all of a sudden I'm wondering Edgewater who? Cermak has a very large selection of super cheap, fresh produce and there's lots of it. Fuji apples were 2 lbs for 99 cents, 99 cents a pound for red bells and 10 limes for a buck! I actually had to put some of the produce back because I realized that even though it's a steal, it's not smart to buy more than can be eaten before it starts to go bad. The meat cases were very busy with special requests and interesting cuts. I picked up a few essentials like olive oil, vinegar and some canned goods, too. A great selection of canned and dried beans. I go to Cermak for produce (cheaper, fresher, more varieties of peppers and certain herbs than at Jewel or Dominick's) and tortillas (usually still warm from the tortilleria). I can even find some Asian veggies here, which is great because during any given week, I'll probably cook Asian as well as Latin American dishes. I don't buy meat here, because it's not of the best quality. Chopped beef for tacos has too much fat and gristle. Flank steak is tough, and it's not because I don't know how to prepare it. And so on. Still, it's convenient for me as I zip to and from the expressway, so I will continue to shop there for the items they present well. ********************************** Update: 3/28/2007 I would like to also mention that Cermak is a great source for Latin American dairy products especially, different kinds of cheese and sour cream. I needed some cotija cheese to make homemade elotes for my daughter, and of course Cermak carries it! It's also one of the few place you can *sometimes* find that green chorizo. Oh, how I love the selection and prices at this store! When you walk in, you go right through the produce section which has absolutely everything you could ever want and it's usually pretty cheap. The rest of the store has a mix of canned goods, boxed food, spices, cereals, meat and poultry, dairy, and a lot of Mexican foods. The store makes their own guacamole and pico de gallo, both of which are to die for. I find the prices and the service to be excellent. I wouldn't recommend going here on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, as it is usually packed, but it's not too bad on week nights or weekend mornings. read more

I love and dont love this place simply because it gets busy and parking plus shopping can be a battle depending on when you go there.the prices can be little higher and just right on things .I especially love the cooked food.delicious I swear! I preferred doing my grocery shopping here versus the nearby Jewel. The produce is typically great and consistently so. Much better quality and cheaper than Jewel. I love that they sell fresh sofrito and recaito here. I use that stuff in EVERYthing. Well I used to when I could find it...sadly haven't found it out here in Cali. They also have a great selection of Mexican cheeses and my favorite crema from El Salvador. The only downside...if no habla espanol...you may have a tough time at the deli counter or if you want to ask questions to *some* of the staff. read more

LOVE Cermak for it's produce! It's cheap - fresh - and there is plenty of it. Compare Cermak's produce section to Jewel's produce section - and you will be amazed and how crappy Jewel's section looks - plus - Cermak doesn't over charge like Jewel. At Cermak I can get 10 limes for $1 - Jewel - 2 for $1. I can get a pineapple for $1 - at Jewel - $3.99. Their meat counter is just as great. My husband love's to pick up a pound of carne asada for $2.49 there and come home to cook up some tacos. The only problem is that if you don't speak spanish - you have to make sure you keep up with the number counter thing so when they say your number in spanish - you can quickly shout out - "yes - 25 - that is me". Last time I was there I was waiting to hear the number in english and got passed up....whoops. I haven't tried to fish counter because it smells disgusting over by it.... plus I'm not a seafood lover. Also - you got to pick up some mexican Coke's in the glass bottle and some rice pudding. Their shelf items aren't that cheap so I usually don't go down the aisles unless I am in desperate need for something. I save those purchases for Jewel or Aldi usually. read more

I love this place. I've been shopping here for years. I can't the number of times I would find the exact same item (same distributor, etc) wayyyy cheaper here. Other places I shop: Whole Foods (I know, I know, but we juice and I need the organic stuff). Also Paulina Meat Market, Stanley's Fruit Market - and Dominicks when I'm desperate. Hands down, I still come here for lots of fruits and veggies including pineapples, mangoes cilantro, chayote, plantains, queso fresco and some meat like chicken thighs. Regarding the meat, they don't do the best job butchering in the world, but good LORD it's so much cheaper than other grocery stores! I love coming mid-week in the mid-afternoon when I can - it's usually pretty dead and they've just re-stocked everything to prepare for the afternoon rush. Their rotisserie chicken is pretty good, and I love the tortillas that come in still steaming from the factory on the south side every day. Also, this is one of the few places you can get an actual HAM - not that spiral cut honeyed crap. A real ham. Something you can throw in a pot with some cabbage, onions, potatoes and carrots and make some serious dinner with. And then afford to go to one of those other fancy stores and buy some gluten-free-low-cal-organic-free-range-vegan gelatto or something. Which probably will cost the same as what you get in two bags of groceries at Cermak. read more
