I used to like Tony's-especially for fruits and veggies. A few years ago they changed ownership and the quality and prices changed for the worse. I consistently experience mushy fruits and avocado that is going bad internally. I don't think they practice good storage technique. The prices are also higher than before the change in ownership and the competition. For example they sell regular and organic bananas for 79 cents and 99 cents a pound. Whole Foods sells for 69 cents and 89 cents. I'll go to Tony's in a pinch if I desperately need something because it is walking distance but usually prefer to drive elsewhere where I get better quality for the same or slightly better price. read more

Along with seeing what is offered in comparison to other grocery stores I shop at regularly, I visited Tony's Fresh Market because Upside, a cash back application offered a 12% cash back offer on grocery purchases. This Tony's Fresh Market location just happened to be one of the nearest to my neighborhood located on the west-side of Chicago. As for this visit, I had no issues whatsoever finding a parking spot for my vehicle. I have to admit, at first, I did not think I would find a spot until I drove to the backside of Tony's where I found a number of open spots available. Inside, the atmosphere felt very relaxed at this Tony's with a neighborhood grocery store vibe. Other than that, I must say that it was a break shopping here versus a Jewel-Osco, Pete's Fresh Market, or Mariano's. Now along with the items shelved being organized, the market is acceptably clean, and the aisles have plenty of maneuvering space in-between. I particularly searched for breakfast foods in hopes that I could find something on the lines of a box of Jimmy Dean - Croissant Egg & Cheese, but I could not. The items I took a liking to and ended up purchasing were a box of Gardein Ultimate Plant-Based Be'f & Broccoli, Lean Cuisine Cheese Ravioli, Ore-Ida Tater Tots, and a box of Frosted Grape Pop Tarts which I had never encountered before, ever! The Ore-Ida Tater Tots were a must purchase for me because as of late, I have been addicted to cooking tater tots in my air fryer as a late evening snack! I know, I know it is so bad eating tater tots late in the evening, but gosh, they are so darn good! For the most part, I enjoyed shopping at Tony's Fresh Market, but I just cannot see myself shopping here regularly due to it being out of my way. Return visits for me depend on whatever cash back offers Upside puts out involving grocery purchases. For my readers, I will leave you with this joke since I likely lost half of you with my review. I started shopping here 7 years ago and it has been a steady decline. Now I go back every 6 months because it is convenient and only then am I reminded how bad of an experience they have made it for their customers. They are often out of carts in the corral. How are you already out of carts at 745 AM? Then there is the worst shopping app ever. Because I only go every six months, it's not just an update; every time, it's a new app. It never remembers my shopping points or any of my other info. Then you have to digitally clip every coupon individually, which wastes time. Of course, you would think the coupons would automatically apply at check out. You would be wrong. The experience is then enhanced by the fact their self checkout is always asking you to bag things you have already bagged, and it won't let you proceed until you have cleared the item on the screen. I am sure you could make the experience worse for customers but I am not sure how. read more

The customer service was a total thumbs down. The CS desk was empty for sometime. I asked for an associate to help me redeem my lottery ticket; staff finally showed up with a very poor attitude. Didn't say 1 word and gave me resting *itch face. It's always a poor experience in this store. I would have been in and out in under three minutes and I had been in the same store three different times that same evening so the cashiers had seen me before buying things. Tony's is a grocery store on Elston near our house that falls into our shopping rotation. We do not really come here for the deals, but my love is drawn here by the selections of meats and cheeses from the deli counters. Thanks to Covid, they seem to be placing some extra emphasis on cleanliness with the shopping carts and the interiors. While this is a fair-sized grocery store, there are some awkward spots where it may not be easy to practice social distancing. There is a random column that cuts into the aisle near one of the meat display areas, and the checkout lines can sometimes intermingle with the shopping aisles so you may have to excuse and pardon yourselves around and about. Shopping at Tony's is A-OK with us, as long as it is not too crowded inside. read more

I go to this place because of it's Mexican selection of foods. Every time I go, the price of some item is wrong in my receipt at checkout. At first, I never realized how many mistakes they've made in my receipts before, My husband pointed out they were in a applying the discount that it was advertised so I started paying attention and every time they made the same mistake. It's like they're trying to trick you into buying things at their regular price by advertising that they're on sale. OMG no, just no. I reserved submitted a bad review for far to long. A few months ago I purchase meat for dinner for the following day. When I went to make dinner the meat was rancid. I tried again and purchased a bag of organic avocados. Well, only half were good. I've been going to Trader Joe's in Lakeview and other places to avoid these problems. Well, today I needed potatoes. I had everything else for dinner so I didn't think they could screw up potatoes. I purchased a bag of small red organic potatoes and when I started dinner I cut up the first one and it was tinted green on the inside. I threw it out and cut a second with the same result. After four potatoes I pretty much got the idea the whole bag is toxic (green potatoes have produced solanine which is toxic and can cause headaches, stomach aches, and neurological problems). I just spent a half an hour trying to get someone on the phone to alert them to check the rest of the shipment. I had to call back five times (hung up on once). It's ridiculous. You would think a grocery store would take such complaints more seriously. So, as far as I'm concerned, I will never purchase any meat here. If I decide to purchase any organics I will have to double check them because it seems to me that these should never have been put on the shelf. I've reduced my star rating again to two stars. A few years ago, it was five. I have been shopping there for about 20 years several times a week but no longer do so. My checkout routine has gone from using a shopping cart to just carrying my items by hand since there are relatively few items that one can buy there anymore if you are seeking organic options. They have pretty much gotten rid of most of the organic items they used to carry. I am now forced to shop outside of the neighborhood and give my money to large retailers who are not part of the community but understand the need to offer a diverse array of food. Tony's is great in a pinch, but it seems they have decimated their organic options, and whoever does their buying is tone deaf to this. At one point, I contacted their head office, and they increased the selection for a few weeks, but then once the supply ran out, they were not restocked, and it's now minimal and worse than its been in years. It's just too bad that they can't seem to offer and maintain even a single organic option for the majority of the categories they carry. It is depressing to see these changes, and they have lost a considerable amount of neighborhood dollars that are now spent elsewhere. I read more

Purchased several items, and had a problem with two in particular. First, the sale price for a bottle of cumin was not honored, which was annoying. The second and larger issue is with the quality of fish. If I accept the higher price to shop at Tony's, the least their fishmongers can do is properly debone their salmon. Went here for seven years but never going back. Today I entered this location to purchase supplies and groceries for my home as this is my usual grocery store. I understand that because of the COVID-19 outbreak everyone is taking precautions such as not bringing grocery bags, Wearing masks, as I was, and gloves and maintaining distance from each other. The store makes this announcement overhead on the PA system. Upon waiting in line to check out I was giving the woman in front of me and additional 2 1/2 to 3 feet of space from my cart to her, The man behind me however was not giving me that same space. He got close to me to get pizza from the freezer, while unmasked and talking on his phone. "Fine." I said to myself, and I moved away from him. He was talking on his phone and perhaps did not notice his cart was very close to me. So close he hit me with it twice while chatting away. At the second time of having his cart hit my feet, I turned and politely asked the man to "please take a step back, there was no one behind him and he was too close and not wearing a mask." To which his FIRST response to me was "Fuck you you crazy bitch just move the fuck up" and continued to tell me to "shut the fuck up and move the fuck up" Frankly, this initial response to a simple request in the best of times made me feel unsafe (as I do not know this man or his mental health status, and I did not want to engage in a fight) and I asked and employee to get the manager on duty which they did. When the manager arrived he was smiling as I explained the above circumstances, he DID turn to the man and say "come on bro." I stated that I just wanted the man to take a step back as there was no one behind him and two people in front of me. Instead of asking him to do this the manager directed me with my full cart to the self check out. And left me there shaking as I had just cut a line of people waiting for that station. Because I had not planned to use the self check out, I was frazzled and shaking as the man then began to photograph me with his phone. I nearly walked out of the store leaving everything there half rang up, half bagged, half full cart... until I saw the manager again and asked him for assistance as my order was large and RESTATED that all I REALLY wanted was for him to ask the man to respect the rules of social distancing, and to be respectful to other customers in the store. Instead he rolled his eyes and quickly checked me out and bagged the groceries halfway himself before calling another employee to finish. I was made to feel like I was crazy for politely asking someone to respect social distancing during a pandemic. A person who was not wearing a face mask, hitting someone with a cart and responded to a simple and polite request in the best of times, with profanity, aggression and violence in his tone. read more

Safety alert. Please be careful when coming to this Tonys. The panhandlers are escalating tactics in asking for money, and a couple of the men followed me home one night. Thankfully, i noticed and walked out on elston, calling them out. They ended up running away, but I saw them back at the entrance. There's a security guard here, but I haven't once seen security ask the men to leave. If you aren't driving, leave your purse or wallet at home and only bring your card. Watch anyone asking for money closely to ensure they don't try to follow you. read more

This Tony's is near my son's apartment in Chicago. When I visit, we usually go there and I help him with groceries. Tony's had a great selection of fresh foods - fruits and vegetables. The quality of their meats and fish are hit and miss. They have a huge selection of ethnic foods, offering items from many cultures. There has never been a time when I've been there that I have walked out with only the things on my list. I always see something new I want to try. Pricing is good for the city. It is not Whole Foods or Mariano's. But, you would not expect that either. Unlike the others who tend to pull in people who don't mind spending a lot for the same food. And, while I do think the fresh meats and fish are better at other stores, I just don't get that from Tony's. The rest is worth the trip. read more

This Tony's is ALWAYS busy. That's why I refrain from going there for grocery shopping. Hubby and I happened to pass by here, and we decided to get a couple grocery items. Items are usually well-stocked and have awesome selections. They are also coupon-friendly, so if you shop with the manufacturer' coupons, lots of your regular grocery and household items are going to cost much less. However, they do NOT carry the Inca Cola from Peru...REALLY? This is a huge disappointment. They do have a private parking lot, but be very careful, as people are driving recklessly inside of the parking lot. Their check-out lines are ridiculously long, even if they open every lane. They have a difficult time keeping up the check-out demands, just saying. They only have one (1) customer-service counter, so that's not very efficient, is it? Their signage is always confusing. Please vigilantly match the items described in the signage, as they may or may not concur. For example, I saw the sign saying that the Red Delicious Apple bags were 2 for $5, but I saw the gala apples beneath the sign. Thus, where were those on-sale Red Delicious Apples? There were nowhere to be found...unfortunately. Overall, Tony's isn't the most ideal place to shop for groceries, yet it serves the purpose in the neighborhoods and prices are typically fair. SEVERAL things wrong with the Elston store, starting with bait and switch sales pricing, stale food bar items, lack of hand baskets for those purchasing just a few items, and rickety old shopping carts that often don't work and require a quarter to use. That said, these negatives are minor compared to rude floor managers and overzealous security staff who follow you all over the store. At first, I thought I was imagining this but then noticed a pattern over the last few years. I hate to think being an African American woman has something to do with it, but I haven't seen this behavior with non-Black patrons. And God forbid I try shopping there with my two teenage children. On more than one occasion, floor managers have actually seemed like they were trying to stare holes through us while we are waiting in line and then checking out. They do not stand and stare in front of any other line but ours, and as soon as we get in line. Do these men have something against Black families buying groceries with their hard earned dollars?? I am a hardworking, gainfully employed, tax-paying, law-abiding, middle class, natural born American citizen. I do not have time for sketchy sales tactics, crappy customer service, and plain old fashion narrow-minded nonsense. It's a real shame, as there are other aspects of the store that are not bad. I did not have my id so instead of refusing the sale I was asked birth date, interrogated about no id and treated as if I were a criminal. A decent grocery store with some rare selections and good deals. Some of the produce is beginning to spoil or is on the verge of spoiling, kinda soft and iffy. Which means that you have to inspect the produce extra carefully before buying. They seem to leave their old produce out longer than other places. Even though this place is the closest grocery store to my apartment (a 10min walk) I only shop here when I know I'll cook the food I buy the same day. I tried purchasing Bulgarian sheep feta cheese from the deli, and I'm not sure what kind of feta it was, but based on the flavor it was cow's milk and definitely didn't taste as good as what I've had from other stores. Most feta looks the same, so it's difficult to know what you're getting. Employees are super nice. read more

just went to buy Powerade drink sale price with digital coupon for 0.49 cents, they were all out of it, but Danny the assistant store manager promised me a rain check to get from the customer service. Today was the last day of the sale. The lady at customer service first refused to give me a rain check, then after back and forth and she called Danny and then agreed. She proceeded to write a rain check but instead of 0.49 cents she wanted to write the rain check for the regular price of 0.99 cents. Then why would I need the rain check for a regular price, people need rain check for sale price. Some how they couldn't understand this. So again back and forth and then she said she couldn't do it for the sale price. So now I go back to Danny the assistant store manager. There was a limit of 15 items and I had told him I needed to buy 10 but when I went back he now said he couldn't do the rain check and I need to talk to the store manager the next day whose name was Tony. I asked for 1 rain check to save only 0.50 cents, he wouldn't do it. Then why is he the assistant store manager? He insisted I talk to Tony the store manager the next day and that Tony will do it. Then why couldn't he do it? First he said he would give me the rain check and then he said he couldn't. For 0.50 cents he wanted me to beg to the store manager the next day and come back and I don't live nearby. And back and forth it took another 15 minutes. Yeah, this place isn't exactly squeaky clean new, but old school is cool again, right? Ok...maybe not, but I'm a bit more lenient on the older interior, since I grew up going to this grocery store and nothing really bothers me as long as they deliver the goods. And after shopping here recently, they are still pretty awesome, despite the few drawbacks (I'll get to that soon). The positives: - wonderful customer service at the deli. The woman working there was so friendly and helpful. It was really busy, but she took the time to talk to us and give us samples of the imported Swiss cheese we had picked out. - the produce was inexpensive and fresh. Garlic for 10 cents each? Yes, please! I stuck to sale items like avocados, tomatoes, limes, garlic, etc., which was a nice change from the overpriced produce at the Jewel on Pulaski. - fresh SOFRITO! This is a staple in Puerto Rican cuisine. Add it to beans, stews, arroz con gandules, bacalao, soups, and more. You'll forget that the jarred stuff ever existed. - diverse products for the diverse community. I needed lychee juice for my lychee soju cocktails, and they carry it! They also have the same smoked meats, Bulgarian feta, and salami you would typically see at HarvesTime or Andy's. - they sell liquor! Beer, wine, and everything in between. The negatives: - this place is seriously crowded! Even during a weekday, the parking lot was full and lines were long. The store is simply understaffed. - it hasn't been updated in years. Perhaps I've been spoiled by the newly built Mayfair Market, but it would be nice to see a new, improved Tony's in the near future. This is a true neighborhood grocery store - crowded, diverse, and inexpensive all rolled into one. Just don't go here on weekends and you should be fine. read more

A word to the wise, if you go on a Saturday (or s Sunday for that matter) to this grocery store, you are to put it simply--SCREWED! It is jam-packed with customers, so much so, that is really difficult to maneuver the cart around the store. You are pretty much guaranteed to be bumped, jostled, and rammed into while wandering around the aisles. Just an FYI people. I love this grocery store & have for sometime. I used live 2 blocks away from it & now I will actually make special trips just to go there (seriously, it is about 4 miles from my home now). I just love their selection of Ethnic food, being Puerto Rican, it is very difficult to find FRESH sofrito for my cooking on the north side. Tony's has it & for cheap, that makes me love it. They also have a very large produce section and the prices seriously cannot be beat. They also sell fresh made foods in the deli section that are very yummy. They also sell deserts, and other baked goodies. Now this is not a large store, but they utilize their space very well. They do have some cons you should know about. For one, the parking lot is an absolute terror--people cannot maneuver that thing for the life of them. They really need to do something about that. Often, I will park on the street to avoid that nightmare. Also, their is often a weird smell in the meat department, it is not at all appetizing. Thus, I rarely if ever purchase my meats there. The Squirt 2 litres, and other pop, had a bright yellow signs reading .88 each. I picked up 2 but when I checked my receipt, they were $1.25 each!
