Okay, I was sleeping on Aldi for a while, but I'm up now! I was missing out on so many good deals, but not any longer! I like getting some organic stuff from here because the price is way better than what I would pay at some of the major grocery store chains. I also enjoy trying some of their private label foods. Honestly, I can't say I've had anything bad yet. They also have some of the brands you recognize as well. This store is clean, well organized and I've had positive experiences with the employees here. I've been to another Aldi location and I can't say all of those same things. A line halfway through the store and only two registers open. The selection stinks and the prices are no big deal.

This location is a bit of a pain to get to and leave. It seems as if this is constantly busy if you were only to gauge it by the parking lot alone. Then you go inside and see how picked over a lot of the items are and the cements for you just how busy it is. This is one of the few locations that has the produce right at the front, if I remember correctly. A lot of the a what is available in the ad is usually gone here if you don't visit as soon as the ad is released. It wasn't all bad, but if you are looking for the sale items, forget it. I made my way around the store and picked up a few items that I purposefully came here for. Then I just browsed for a bit. I ended up leaving here with a good amount of items to lasted me for a while. I was impressed that this location had more national brand names than others I have been to. read more

We avoided this location as much as possible because we were being approached by unsavory characters that either wanted the quarter in the grocery cart or they were assessing the car. It was off putting. I asked the location if their guards to escort me to the car. Sometimes the guards were able to help. I feel better when hubby is with me. Life shouldn't be this complicated for produce and milk. If you don't have complications outside, the inventory is just like most Aldi's. The produce is decent. There is a variety of breads. Milk has been reasonably priced. The eggs are higher than Walmart. The meat selection is decent. The frozen items are varied. We like perogies. The cashier's are nice. If hubby is with me, he picks me up at the front of the store. It decreases the encounters we have outside with the riffraff. read more

This Aldi is in stiff competition with a south Brooklyn Aldi I went to over 5 years ago for being the worst Aldi location I've ever been to. In general terms, it's an Aldi - low prices and a given selection of items are what you come here for. The single best thing I could say about this store is that it had the sandwich bread I was looking for (an Aldi brand, so duh) and the price was the same as I used to pay in Philadelphia (no DC-area markup like I was expecting). The store was also clean enough, and the checkout staff efficient enough. The main reasons for the low rating are the structure/organization of the store, and the relatively poor inventory selection. In a store like Aldi where there aren't staff to spare, if the store is not set up in a way to make it super obvious and easy to find what you're looking for, there's a problem. I walked around the refrigerated sections of the store at least twice without finding tofu (not even sure they carry it at all). As for selection, their candy/chocolate section is a big disappointment. They didn't carry my favorite kind of Aldi chocolate (it's an Aldi brand, so you'd think they'd have it). I know the complaints seem petty, but as far as I'm concerned, the main appeal of a national chain like Aldi is the expectation of a fairly consistent shopping experience. With plenty of other Aldi locations in the DC area, I won't be coming back to this one. read more

On Saturday March 23, I went to get groceries at this location, everything was okay until I was getting out at the Door, I was stopped By the manager ( appear to be Indian ( man ) and he asked by the invoice, I said here you are and I told him what was wrong? It is a poor man's Trader Joe as Paul D. stated. Trader Joe is their parent, and they are delegated the ugly step child. However, beauty is only skin deep. Aldi has a lot to offer, and at severely discounted prices. Crackers, cookies, cheeses (even goat cheese logs), milk, and tea bags are some of the many things you can get that are just as good as the Giant or CVS brand. Kelly G. is right. Don't judge the label. They actually sell an awesome frozen coconut shrimp (Sea Queen) for just $2.99. Mangoes were $0.49. Avocados were $0.89. I planned to give this location four stars, but because of the vagrant with alcohol on his breath begging for money for "white bread", and the one that followed me to my vehicle because he wanted my cart so he could collect the quarter, I can only say it's A-OK. First of all, they take Apple Pay now!!! Turn up! Second of all, bring your own bags! Aldi is the best value option ever! I usually shop at Whole Foods or Safeway or Walmart for groceries, but Aldi has surprisingly good produce and meat quality. The produce and meat quality is far superior to both of the two Shopper's stores in the area. The best little secret about Aldi for me is their BREAD selection. They have brioche! They even have brioche hot dog buns bih! That's super fancy! Another greatly priced thing that they carry is 100% maple syrup. Usually 100% maple syrup will run you about $6-$9, but here it's $2!!!! I would even go as far as 4.5 stars for this site - particularly since the renovation. Since I first discovered ALDI I now look for one any place I happen to live or travel. Their prices are typically lower than other chain grocery stores with a good selection of high-quality produce items. This is my go-to place for dairy staples like butter, milk and half-and-half for my coffee. The whole meat and deli cut selections are terrific and the cheese selection is great, too. Canned goods selection is solid as are the items in the frozen section. The half-star *ding* I would give the Hyattsville location is around staff management of checkout lane service. Though I haven't seen them appearing to be understaffed, per se, my experience has been that they'll let lines grow quite a bit before opening another checkout and then they don't seem to take respectful steps and arrange it so the next in line folks are given priority. The staff I've encountered have pretty much all been really nice and generally cheerful which lends a great deal to the shopping experience. read more

It's always a quick and pleasant experience at this Aldis. The prices are low and they have some great quality items. I like to give certain things a try before I write them off. A worker name Valencia has a real bad attitude. She yells and screams at customers. If she is stress or the line is long she gets aggravated and starts yelling. I recently had a bad experience with her when the system was down so everyone had to use cash. When I returned to get cash I asked her where my stuff was she said she put it back after I told her I was coming back. Then she starts to yell I can leave or go somewhere else . All the customers in the store heard the loud commotion of her screaming and some had left. Another older lady said she always yelling at someone.The customer service here is very bad . The test of any system is how well it functions under pressure. This Aldi gets a low score for poor performance. Today around 1:00 PM, 10 days into the COVID-19 buying panic, the place was not packed but very busy. Despite the availability of seven cash register lanes, only three were open, leaving waiting checkout customers backed up into the aisles 15- to 20-deep. This should have been an "all hands on deck" moment, with the manager and others opening enough additional cash registers to clear the backups. Instead, I saw one oblivious employee - smartphone stuck to her ear - pushing a motorized squeegee machine she obviously didn't know how to operate as she left behind a trail of water on the previously dry floor. Another young female worker blithely stepped through the mass of customers, phone in hand, heading to the back of the store. This Aldi serves a largely immigrant clientele not inclined to make waves with supervisors. I would have looked for a manager myself but didn't want to lose my place in line - where I had to wait 35 minutes before reaching an overworked cashier. Recently, this Aldi was expanded. Now management needs to expand its sense of mission to include expediting checkouts during these stressful times. BTW, I notice this Yelp listing has yet to be "claimed" by anyone at the store or in corporate HQ - a possible indication of Aldi indifference to customer feedback. Not good. read more

In a nutshell: It's a "Poor-Man's Trader Joe's." Nothing makes me more despondent then shopping at a place like this... It's another symptom of what's wrong with our society. In a word: "Disconnect." ALDI is short for "Albrecht Discount", and is a discount supermarket chain based in Germany. They are also the owners of Trader Joe's. ALDI can best be described as a cross between a Trader Joe's and a Costco. It's about the size of a Trader Joe's and everything is generic food staples. Like a Trader Joe's they only carry one of every item (their brand). Limiting their inventory to less than 1,400 items. As compared to a regular Supermarket that carries over 30,000 different items. I felt uncomfortable walking through here. Maybe it was because I brought my own bag and was filling it until it got heavy and then I checked out. Because I didn't have a quarter to gain access to one of the shopping carts in the parking lot. The isles are so small that you wouldn't want to use a cart here anyway. So, I just used my big canvas grocery bag. Others were doing the same. There are only about five isles and most everything is on pallets with generic labels that vaguely resemble name brands. There are names like "Happy Farms" and "Cooks Corner." Also, their little produce stand wasn't refrigerated. You don't come here for fresh produce, that's for sure! There is something fundamentally wrong with having to forgo knowing who manufactures what you eat. All this standardized, generic food is disturbing. And yet I've been buying "Store Brand" generic meats & cheeses for years from Giant. However, this began back when Giant was locally owned by Izzy Cohen and not the Netherlands-based Royal Ahold. So, I guess it's a false comfort that I have with some store brands. Nevertheless, none of the labels here indicated where it was manufactured or sourced. It only said "Distributed By ALDI Inc Batavia IL." So, are we to assume that because it looks just like Land O'Lakes, Green Giant, or Kraft Singles with different names, that it's all just from the same Factory with a different name? To say nothing of where the undisclosed factory sources the ingredients to make the things we eat and drink everyday. Because it's all private labeled, yet it looks like a familiar brand, so that's good enough. The rub here is that ALDI is only located in lower-income neighborhoods. So, when you can barely afford to feed yourself, ALDI may be your only choice. Products here didn't include the name ALDI. Instead, everything had weird names like "Happy Farms." I don't know if it would've mattered? I just know that I didn't like shopping here and I'm not going back. You get what you pay for! Here, that means a LOT. You may not recognize the names on the packages, but whatever. Just tear the package off, throw it away, and dump your deep discount groceries into your stacking containers you bought at Williams-Sonoma anyway. No one will ever know the difference. Ooops! Did I say that? :-) This place is sort of a cross between Cosco (because it has everything) and a Trader Joe's (the parent company, I believe) (because they offer exquisite delicacies like lime grilled tilapia or something in a package for two). You can do your BASIC shopping for the week for about $25. Add in a few specialty items and it won't cost you that much more. And while the shopping baskets cost $0.25, and they only accept debit or cash, (i.e., NO credit cards, NO atm, I think they take ebt) just think, you'll have more money to spend on fancy restaurants to yelp about! I'm only docking a star because it was so crowded it was a bit hard to get around on a Sunday afternoon. But it's the same good old Aldi that I have visited in KC and in Houston. You just can't beat their European chocolate prices. Plus, this time they had 8oz beautiful fresh mushrooms for .59! Say what?! Yes it's cash or debit only but so what? Aldi is targeted shopping for the Recessionista. If you want to save money, this is a good place to pick up some staples like frozen veggies, nuts, dry and canned goods. Some of the frozen pizzas looked as good as Trader Joe's - spinach and goat cheese for example - but were $2.00 cheaper. Plus they have random non-grocery items like a memory foam bathmat for $7.99 - way less than Bed Bath and Beyond and it seemed nearly as good. I wasn't shopping for fresh produce so I didn't examine it closely but it all looked reasonably fresh to me. Some people may find the following bothersome - You pay 50 cents for a grocery cart and you have to bag your own groceries. (They were selling reusable bags when I was there.) The lines are long at peak shopping hours. They only take cash or debit cards. This is not as upscale as the Aldi I've shopped at in suburban Chicago which had more of a Costco feel, nor like the Aldi Markt in Berlin, which is jam-packed with more non-grocery items as well as more gourmet foods. But this Aldi is fine and gives a good, less expensive alternative to the Safeway or Giant when buying dry goods and frozen items. Aldi is the parent company of Trader Joe's. read more

Normally an Aldi lover, but this was the worst Aldi's experience. Long lines and only one cashier. Messy store- boxes were all over the place. Very small and cramped store and parking lot. When you return your cart, people are waiting / demanding to take it and say they need your quarter (?!). Very nice cashier, but does not make up for the experience. read more

Today, all 3 checkers were screaming at the shoppers to go to different lines that were shorter. For 5-10 minutes! No other grocery stores have employees scream at the shoppers. Aldi means *Albrecht Diskont* and it is founded by Albrecht brothers in Germany. So, I go there because it is European (stricter regulations, less chemicals, less poison, no GMOs, sustainable farming etc.) and because they have the best prices in the very overpriced DC general area. I wish they also had organic, cage free eggs as I don't buy any other eggs on principle to eliminate animal cruelty (to get the price down to $1.29 they don't follow the far superior European regulations regarding this but sell eggs produced by extreme amounts of animal cruelty). It' s not just cash or debit anymore, they also accept credit cards. Which is good. As always - bring your own bags, don't pollute the environment with unnecessary plastic trash. This particular store always has lines but staff is friendly. Stocking and price tags are horrible though. In summer, I hardly ever got items from their catalogue, which supposedly more people buy so what not stock them more? Last time, I spent about 20 minutes watching how they tried to sort out an orange price mismatch at the register for another customer .. only to discover at home that they had charged me $3 for pears which were displayed for $2.29 per case (so, don't buy pears there as they are cheaper at Safeway and Giant :). read more

It is super crowded, but I was able to find what I need for tonight's dinner. Although the lines were long, the cashiers were moving everything quickly. Aldi has its own brand of food, but it is comparable to others in taste and much cheaper in price. I was quite surprised . I'm not a fan of Aldi's produce, but they do have some good buys. I was a skeptic in the beginning because of the brands I wasn't familiar with. As a mom on a budget, I gave Aldi a chance. Bought almond milk, cereal, and bagels. And was very pleased once I tried it. My child couldn't tell the difference from the store brand cereal and Aldi's brand. The location was great and free parking lot available. read more

Excellent value for the money when buying the Aldi store brands. I'm a Heinz ketchup only type of guy but the Aldi brand tastes exactly the same to me. Snack foods are ridiculously low price when compared to the national and regional brands and often just as good or close enough that it doesn't make sense to spend $3.99 for a bag of Doritos when the Aldi brand is less than half of that. Milk is always less expensive at Aldi and the packaged deli meats and cheeses are excellent in taste and value. Produce is always lower priced than other stores an is usually very fresh since the store is small and there are only a couple of cases on display at a time, so it gets rotated and stuff doesn't sit in a bulk bin or display for days at a time. They have weekly specials that blow the other major chains' BOGO and weekly special prices out of the water. The only issue I have is due to something that I saw on a recent visit. I wondered why sometimes the bananas are bruised when you don't see any marks on the skin, then I saw an employee "stocking" them by just dumping a box of them on top of another box that was already on the stack. Question answered. And occasionally there will be an employee using the huge floor cleaning contraption during a busy time of day, or one will have the heavy duty skid jack out on the floor really making it difficult to get down an aisle, but with as busy as the store is and the amount of money that you can save by shopping there versus any other grocery store that I've ever been in, it's worth the little bit of hassle. Plus, it is within walking distance of our house so it is convenient to go grab a couple of sacks of grub and supplies whenever we run low on something that we need but don't have a huge list. It does get crowded if you only shop during the weekday after work or weekend morning to late afternoon typical rush times, but if you go during a weekday morning or after 7:30 pm or so, the lines are usually very short. Only four stars because it is a small store so sometimes what you are looking for isn't on the floor and the low number of employees working at any time sometimes makes it difficult to find one that isn't working the front end or otherwise busy doing something else. read more

For all those who wrote reviews prior to mine, let me add my two cents. First of all, it only costs $0.25 to obtain a cart, not $0.50. However, you get the quarter back when you return the cart. So actually using the cart costs you nothing. And the whole point of having people put in a quarter to use the cart in the first place is so that people will return the cart to the station to get their quarter back (thus keeping the carts from ending up all over the parking lot, up the street, etc.). I think it's a great idea, actually. As for the food, I would say 90% of Aldi's food tastes the same or better than comparable brands at other stores. People just have to get over buying brand names (which I see as a problem for Americans not just for buying food items, but other merchandise as well - for example, clothing). Who cares if the Cheerios are called something else (like Crispy Oats)? If you save at least $2.00 a box on average, then buy the Crispy Oats!!! Who cares if the spaghetti sauce is called Reggano instead of Ragu? If it tastes great and saves you money, then buy the Reggano!!! I love me some Aldi. I like to come here to get staple pantry items for way cheaper than regular grocery stores. I also like to shop around for some of the specialty items they have from time to time, like certain cheeses, or chocolates. The produce selection also varies from time to time, but you can be assured it's almost always less expensive than their competitors. A couple of tips: Don't come expecting to get in and get out quickly. You won't. Yes, the quarter in the cart thing is weird, but just go with it. Bring your own bags. Don't forget to stop by what I call the "random aisle". There's always odd things like water hoses, LEGO sets, and infomercial products. It's like a grocery store version of the SkyMall. Don't buy the ground beef. I did once and I regretted it. Buy some snacks! I find that I like their knock-off brand snacks better than their original counterparts. read more

It's Aldi. It's cheap. It's better than Wal-Mart, and I find this location fairly clean and friendly. It has a good amount of products, and good parking. I love Aldi. I get good food at a good price. The $0.25 deposit for carts just comes from Germany. In Germany you always pay $1 euro (a bit more than a dollar) to borrow a cart and bring it back. It's just the German roots here. Plus Aldi pays their cashiers above minimum wage, and treats them better than Wal-Mart. MUCH BETTER. This deposit saves the company from having to hire people to organize the carts, etc. This ends up with you having to pay less as the consumer. I really can't complain about Aldi. Of course, you'll get the occasional item that's not amazing (esp. with their meat, if you can afford it, avoid it), but overall I'm not disappointed. I don't make very much and the DC area is crazy expensive, so Aldi treats me well on little cash. A much better choice than Wal-Mart, Shoppers, etc. If I made a million dollars I'd just go to Whole Foods, but hey I don't. :P I think Paul D. is being a bit hypocritical here. Yes it might be a "poor man's Trader Joe's" but hey, I can't afford to get all my groceries at TJ's, so be it. I also find that I have better luck overall at Aldi... The only reason I gave it 2 stars is the prices are low and at the end I got what I came for(chocolate). Overall will not be returning unless it's an urgent matter. You have to go into Aldi with a different set of expectations -- if you want fancy and lots of ready-made food, then you will be disappointed. But if you like to save money, have access to good quality merchandise including organics, and are interested in gluten free and/or low fat foods that won't break the bank, Aldi is what you've been waiting for. I find something new to try every time I go, and their gluten free product line is fantastic -- and so much more affordable. It's also a great place to pack a gift basket and pick up stuff for a party. My only ping on this store is that they often only have one cashier working, but usually work that out. OK, so this NOT is glitzy or glamorous. The prices are good, actually really good. The products are by in large fantastic. Skip the frozen burritos--they taste like dung. Dairy is grade-A. Chocolate is from Germany & Austria, and is WAY better than Hersheys. Most of the products are rebadged/rebranded stuff from major labels (i.e. is that cracker assortment with the six identical flavors to Pepperidge Farm in the same size box the same???). I think you have to be a little dedicated to shop at this particular location, the staff is a little discriminatory based on race--but they may also be underpaid/overworked. Contrary to popular belief, the chain is completely separate from Trader Joe's. Two brothers (& two of the richest men in the world) owned the North & South divisions of the company. What we have in the US is Aldi Süd. Trader Joe's is part of Aldi Nord. The split happened after the brothers got into a fight (over selling cigs) in 1960 or '62... So anyway, I would give one or two stars based on treatment, but if $$ matters that has to count for something (hence the bump to 3). BTW only one brother is still living, and not a lot is known about either brother publicly. I mean you're reading a review for Aldi, so you need to know right? They are(/were, RIP) super into privacy, one was kidnapped in his 60s or 70s (+- 8yrs), and after the family paid the gianormous ransom [they/]he relocated to some undisclosed private island[s]. Anyway, if you want to save a dollar or more on a gallon of milk, don't mind paying a nickle for a bag, and don't mind experimenting a little (not EVERY product is good), this is a great place. This location is pretty decent. For the most part the produce is pretty fresh... occasionally they have a bad batch. Their lines: fit and active and the simply organic offer a lot of different options with a really good price point. The downside is the checkout lanes can be long. Also, the people trying to take your cart outside of the store can be a bit overwhelming. read more
