The only thing here that is a bit annoying is the lack of cellular service once you get into the building, forcing you to utilize their WiFi but you have to ask the information desk for the password. It would be really helpful to have that information posted at the door or around the store because I often use my phone in the store. Suffice it to say, for now, that if you need a fruit or vegetable (the standards), a deli salad, garden plant (in season), seafood, pot pie, or sweet treat, get yourself to Layton Fruit Market. Today I tried two new items: German potato salad made by the famous Pulaski Inn of Cudahy, and safe-to-eat-raw chocolate chunk cookie dough. The former was nearly as good as my grandma's, with sufficient bacon and a well-balanced dressing. I prefer it hot, so a quick trip through the microwave and I was happy. The cookie dough was excellent--big CHUNKS of dark chocolate, and a yummy base sans eggs, making it safe for many.

I recently stopped by Pete's Fruit Market for the first time after hearing about it. As soon as I…read morewalked in, I saw buckets of vegetables: peppers, tomatoes, squash, you name it. Most buckets seemed to be about 6-8 inches in diameter and prices ranged from $1 to $5. I only wish they offer smaller buckets instead of such a big bucket. It is hard to buy in bulk with smaller household and I don't like to freeze produce. I was curious about the quality of the produce, but I wasn't too impressed. For example, the apricots looked a little banged up--kind of like the "misfit" produce I've seen before. There was upbeat Mexican music playing, which gave the place a fun vibe, and the store itself isn't that big. A security guard was stationed outside. They had yellow-flesh watermelon at $0.99/lb, and giant seeded watermelons for $16 each--which felt pricey, especially since I had just come from Costco where I got a decent-sized watermelon for $6 (though admittedly smaller than the ones at Pete's). I also noticed mangoes going for $2 each, which again felt steep. I had been hoping to find some Mexican pastries, but nothing really stood out, and there weren't any prepared foods available. However, I saw they got a catering menu which I thought it might be good to have a food court selling those items. I was expecting something more like La Michoacana or Fiesta stores in Texas, but this wasn't it. In the end, I just picked up a few Mexican candies like Pulparindo and called it a day. I was a bit disappointed with the fruit selection, especially the lack of tropical options. On the plus side, they have a fairly large, gated parking lot, which is convenient. I'm glad I visited, but not sure I'll be rushing back anytime soon.

However, I was walking right by the upper level entrance and remembered that I needed a couple things so I did enter and was a bit impressed with the large variety of non-food items on this level. While none of them were things that I was there for, it was something I wanted to make a mental note of for the future. After heading downstairs, I did find what I was looking for though for the size of the store I was a bit surprised at the limited selection in both of the areas that I browsed (pretzels and baking needs), but they did have what I came for, so I can't complain too much! This isn't a store I would likely frequent often if I lived in the area, but it was definitely good in a pinch and since I was already walking by.

Funny enough, I found the manager and he was so kind and patient with me though I'm sure extremely busy. He showed me where the sandwiches were located but we noticed how there weren't enough for my group. He immediately went back and assembled sandwiches with his team quickly while I found the other items I needed. Special thanks to the Sendik's employees who turned out some delicious sandwiches for me and my team! Also enjoyed the mini cookies and assorted chips we had with it, too. The parking structure is easy to navigate and had plenty of parking on a weekday. The store is clean and bright, and everyone was friendly. It's definitely a good-sized store compared to other locations - you should be able to find just about anything you need here. I have to tell myself to not be surprised my the total at check-out. I've not long just moved to the area and already popped into this place plenty of times. Didn't have time to make dinner - stopped in for a quick pick up. On the way to my brother's house for a Packer game - stopped in to choose from their very vast beer, wine, and liquor sections. Hosted friends at our house - stopped in to grab some ready-made apps. Had a hungry toddler while on the go - stopped in for snacks.
