Before I begin this review let me start off by saying that this review is based solely on my opinion and my opinion alone so with that being said let's go!. I have been passing by these stores in almost every city in Hampton Roads Virginia ( don't ask me where it got that name because I don't have a clue,I'm not from this area ) but as I was saying I passed by this supermarket chain countless times and never purchased anything that I can remember but I finally decided to give them a try and I brought a loaf of bread and some blueberries ( I love them ). The store didn't have a huge variety of items ti chose from but they have all your basic needs like bread,eggs, pastries, juice beverages etc etc. I would come again to make a purchase if needed but if you noticed I left out a star and that's because you should have your own bag or a shopping cart with you at the time of your purchase and of course I didn't have either so... some may say that's my fault but in my defense I had no idea!. read more

I am not a shopper, so when I get excited about a store, that should tell you something. I recently heard through the grapevine that Aldi was coming to town in Portsmouth. I knew the name, but really didn't know much about it. After researching the company this morning, I found out Aldi is owned by the same company as Trader Joe's. Aldi opened in Germany in 1961, and the first US store opened in Iowa in 1976. The more I read about this grocery store chain, the more I wanted to go check it out. So, off I went. First things first--you need to bring two things with you when you go to Aldi: 1) Bring a quarter for your shopping cart. You will get it back once you return your cart. The idea is that Aldi doesn't have to hire someone to retrieve carts scattered throughout the parking lot, and that keeps their costs down. 2) Bring your own bags because Aldi does not provide any for you. I think it is a fantastic idea! I'm sure the real reason is to keep costs down, but I love that it makes people use their own bags. *FYI--You will also have to bag your own items after paying for your things--they have a long counter for you to do that. When I found out that Aldi was a discounted grocery store, it gave me images of dented cans, rotten produce, and cheap brands. I was delighted to see that their small, but quality inventory was impressive; they carry lots of organic items and a large gluten-free line. Most everything I needed today I was able to purchase at Aldi. The store was clean, organized, and small. I can imagine it being crowded during peak hours, but it was quiet and mostly empty when I was there around 10:00 a.m. on a Monday. I liked the layout of the store, and I enjoyed the décor--not flashy, but comfortable. The cashier who rang up my items was very friendly and helpful--he asked if I was able to find everything, and when I told him it was my first time visiting, he said there was a $10-off coupon, which he went ahead and gave to me. I am in love with Aldi, and I plan to shop here on a regular basis even though I have to drive 25 minutes to get there. I found the prices to be extremely affordable compared to any other store I'd shopped at (except maybe the commissary but with much less hassle). I left with a shopping cart full of food and it cost me $70. You be the judge! read more

Nice store. It is very clean and spacious. Most items are not your typical name brand, but you can find some name brand items here. You can get some really excellent discounts if you are willing to give up your name brand food. Sorry, no Kellogg's cereal here. You need to bring a quarter with you if you plan on using a grocery cart. They are chained up and you use a quarter to unlock them. When you are finished, you take the cart back, hook up the chain and get your quarter back. This is common overseas and I am glad to see one store in America do this. Wish more would follow suit. You also need to bring your own bags. You can get bags here but you must pay for them. This is smart because it cuts down on trash and saves the store (and ultimately the customer) on money. Really good deals on pretty high end items. You should bring your own bag, they sell plastic & cloth bags there, but there are no free bags. Employees will have boxes left around for the intention of a customer using it to carry out their groceries. Their selection is quite impressive & they are a predominantly organic market. Personally I like being able to get a dozen organic eggs for $3.99 & organic bananas for $0.59 a lb as well as a few ounces of Norwegian smoked salmon at under $4. I always bring at least 2 clothe tote bags & a cooler bag to get everything I need in one trip to the store. They also have wine & beer very reasonably priced. I can't attest to the quality of the wine selection, the prices are Trader Joe's esque in that department. read more

I have been to Aldi a handful of times now and feel I can leave an accurate review of my experience. Finding it was easy and parking was also adequate. Bring a quarter for a cart and bring your own bags unless you want to buy reusable in store. They're around 80cent for the cold bag and a dollar for the regular. YOU BAG YOUR OWN ITEMS. They have a counter to do so. When you check out you swap grocery carts with the cashier.. which I find a bit annoying because I have a 3 year old who sits in the cart and it just doesn't make sense to switch him from one to the other when we could just move the cart over.. anywho The selection is pretty good. I have bought a few Aldi brand items that I like- 100 calorie packs of snacks, eggs, canned dog food, soups and LOVE THE RED BULL! They're reasonably priced on some items and then others are high. The meat is very high compared to local grocery stores. I did ONCE find a great deal on rib eye steaks where I got around 11-12oz of steak for 5-6 dollars and they came in a pack of two. I won't buy meat there and their frozen selection is also a bit underwhelming for the price (and calories). Overall I go monthly from Carrollton to stock up on aldi red bull, snacks and dog food. I got to say, I've become such a fan of this place! Thank god a new Aldi is opening up REAL soon near my house because this is my new go-to! I walked in here to find everyone so pleasant and everything so clean! The aisles feel nice and open. I couldn't help but think of Trader Joe's and later found out Aldi and Trader Joe's are RELATED. Makes sense now, although ALDI's has more items for the home. They both have their pros and cons, however, I purchase a lot of items yesterday and only spent around $20. It's rare I spend that amount at TJ's. Aldi's just might become my new favorite market, they have nifty items at a reasonable price. We came here on a Sunday morning to see what the rave was all about. Great timing, since it was pretty much empty except for maybe 4-5 people. At first, I was a bit confused, since they charge you $.25 to use a shopping cart. I was impressed by the cleanliness of the store. I noticed it was cold inside the whole store. Was wondering if this was on purpose or not. Prices are incredibly cheap. They have organic selections for both produce and non produce which made me happy. I noticed they have their own brand of food and it looks extremely close to the named brand itself. They also have a huge selection of fancy, international cookies, chocolates, and cookies. I also did not know you should come in with reusable bags for your groceries. In order to keep their cost down, they do not provide bags. In fact, there's a very long bar at checkout where you bag you groceries after you've paid for them. I like this store. I see what the fuss is about, however, honestly, both Aldi's are far away from where I live, I so I probably wouldn't make a special trip out. read more

This was the first Aldi in Hampton Roads, and it is the worst. On any given day, there are only one or two lines open with more than 10 people with carts overflowing waiting to check out. This is especially frustrating for me, as I'm there to buy two things every two weeks. (Take a wild guess.) Also, there's little to no parking. It's really, really popular. I've been a fan of Aldi since before the hype came and went and now it's all about Lidl. I can't really see the difference in the two. I buy groceries at Harris Teeter. read more

Pretty much my go-to grocery store nowadays. If you're one who cooks 95% of their meals like me, Aldi is a true paradise when it comes to saving quite a bit of money. When chicken breast is on sale and is ~1.49/lb, I'm usually the first to come and swipe 5-6 packs worth. The rotational sales every Wednesday are pretty nice as I'm able to affordably try out new cuts of meat and try whatever new foreign cheese happens to be in stock that week. The store is neat and tidy inside and out and the staff inside are always a joy to interact with as well. Don't forget to bring a bag, or you'll have to hunt for an empty box in the store! read more

My 2nd experience at Aldi...Had my quarter, no problem. Brought my bags July 4th. As soon as I enter the store, I am greeted with "We're closed" It was 3:55. She said grab what you need, but check out quickly. She was closing flaps on the dairy & meat sections, quickly & loudly. Instructing everyone she could that they were closing. Complaining that it would take a long time for them to get out of there. My first instinct was to leave, but badly needed milk. There was approximately 50 people in the store. So, I check out & put my bags empty bags in the cart. The cashier intentionally starts putting my items in the cart...not the bags. Really???? Will NOT go back!!! read more

I love Aldis! A great eco friendly store for myself and my family. We did not have Aldis in Maine. I prefer Aldis rather than going to Lidls. I have only one negative complaint on a girl who works checking people out, she is very rude and she rushes me and my boyfriend every time we are there. I do not know if they are short staffed, or what the problem is. It is hard to rush us when we have a toddler and she always gives attitude to my boyfriend. One day we didn't move our shopping cart fast enough and she took it from us and swung it around quickly and almost hit us with it. I also do instacart shopping here and I feel rushed a lot of the time. Other than that, it is not too busy and I love shopping here! read more

So I've come here maybe about 4 times already. I can say that the selection is pretty good. They have less items than a traditional grocery store but carry many staples that some families traditionally buy such as pasta, rice, certain vegetables, some frozen foods and dairy. Speaking on the fresh vegetables, their selection is very small. They have things like celery, carrots, green onions, potatoes I believe, apples and oranges and maybe a few other items I am forgetting as well as bags of salad. If you are looking for an exotic ingredient, chances are you won't find it here. But if you are looking for some affordable options then I believe you won't be disappointed. They carry more of their own brand vs. store brands which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I come here whenever I need a small amount of items and I don't feel like going to a bigger grocery store. SOME things in the store are cheaper than other grocery stores but don't expect significant differences in prices. The store is very clean and the associates always have a smile on their face and are very friendly. There are no plastic bags btw, so bring your own. You can also purchase their own Aldi's bag which is a decent size. I believe the bag is under $2. Also, don't forget your quarter to get a grocery cart. Don't worry, you will get that quarter back when you return the cart. Other than the things mentioned, I do enjoy shopping here on occasion and going through their selection. read more

Soooo yea.. I guess I should have read the reviews before coming here so I would've been a little more prepared. I came in to Aldi's today after I went to gym to check out some veggies and fruits and to browse around to see what they have to offer since I hear a lot of ppl talking about it. To start off I didn't have a quarter handy which was needed to borrow a shopping cart, the coin is returned to you when you bring the cart back but I felt I couldn't really shop like I wanted to because I didn't have a cart. I then learned that you have to bring your own bag too! I really was not prepared today. At this point I already decided that I'm not buying anything today but I was going to continue to browse around. I was shocked that the eggs were like .95 cents and a half of gallon of milk was $1.03. The frozen pizza were under $4 and the list goes on. The store was extremely clean inside. I will surely come back again now that I know what I need to bring to shop. read more

it's a small store and they keep it very tidy. I dont know about the meat section I still get that from sams, but the snacks (their cookies and chocolates especially), cheese and produce is good and they have a great selection of pasta and breads. They have the best coffee/hot beverages for the price and amount you get. My favorite of all the items here are the bran flakes. read more

We became fans of Aldi when we lived in Jacksonville. This store feels the same only smaller, but not by much. Great prices, especially on their in house brand. The almond milk gets delivered on Friday, in fact I think most of their deliveries come Friday, but you can just ask, the people are super friendly. I'm concerned by the fact they accept credit cards now. It used to be only debit cards, so I'm wondering if prices will start to go up. I hope not because their prices are very low. Clean store, safe neighborhood, must see and shop there. Bring your own bags and a quarter for the shipping cart. You get the quarter back when you return the car. You'll see when you get there. When you go to ALDI you will normally have only one choice of items to and this works almost all the time. The produce is good and the dairy is adequate. We will continue to shop here because we can save 25-40% on almost everything. read more

Ok, so I must be one of Aldi's number 1 fans. I just relocated to Portsmouth, VA from SC. I've shopped Aldi for years there. I was getting a little sad as the time to relocate was drawing near, because there was no Aldi here at the time. I'm not sure exactly when the store in Portsmouth opened up, but I believe it was shortly before I moved here. I was thrilled when I checked google again and found one. I've always served as an unofficial advocate for Aldi. I talked most of my family, friends and coworkers into trying it. I would tell them all about it and the uniqueness of the store. Things that really excite me about Aldi, prices, daily shipments-guarantees freshness, Thoughtfulness-savings - the quarter to borrow a shopping cart, which is returned to you when you return the cart to the corral. Bringing your own bag and bagging your own groceries. Practical and money saving to keep consumer prices down. The cashiers were super nice in SC. The one's I've encountered in Portsmouth are alright so far, not overly friendly or anything so far. The employees, managers work constantly and very hard always trying to keep shelves stocked and moving merchandise around, and coming to cashier when the lines get more than a couple of people in them. They are very quick, the food is good and fresh and they have a wide variety of food and some non-food items, which are high quality for a good price as well. It seems like almost every time that I go, there is a new product for me to try. The store originated in Germany, so it's nice to sometimes try to German products. You will find pretty much anything you will find in any other grocery store, just with a modified selection, some name brands that you are accustomed to and some not. I find all of the food to be high quality, I only had an issue with 1 thing a couple of years ago. A can of refried beans had something foreign in them, like rubber or something, from the processing machine I assume? I was going to make contact with the company, but I never did. Today I received a flyer in the mail from Aldi, $5 off $30 purchase, just makes everything that much sweeter. I was thrilled several months ago when Aldi started taking Credit cards. I am not a cash-person and I don't care for using my debit card much either. That was one of my only issues with Aldi, I'm so glad that fixed that for me!! The other issue is that some things are seasonal or temporary. I purchased the only 2 blue throw pillows at the store one day, thinking if I go back often there would be more, as I wanted 4. Aldi was pretty much on my way home, so after checking back a half dozen times, I finally gave up. I also had my sister in Ohio checking for me, but no luck there either. They told me that they may bring them back some day, they don't place orders and don't know what the will receive. So the moral of the story, if you really like something, get as many as you need that first time, because you may never see that item again. Just know that it may not be there at all the next time you go. I've purchased it all there and I'm very satisfied with everything. I've even purchased the fresh and frozen meats, ice cream, and they are all great too. They have healthy and gluten free foods. Some were afraid to try Aldi, like if they thought it was a thrift store or something. Well, I think I've gotten many people hooked on it and I continue to be an advocate for it. I send texts to friends, family and former coworkers when they have sales items that I know will interest them... Fruits and veggies especially. We are all on health kicks... where else can you get nice, juicy big mango's for .69 cents each and so many other great deals. If you happen to forget your bags, don't fret, they will sell you your bag of choice for a very low price. If you forget a quarter, you might get lucky...shoppers are great too, some will just give you their cart after they empty it, and not accept your quarter, others will save you a trip to the corral, but they want their quarter from you...smile...it's all good though. It's just a quarter and it makes you feel good and them feel good when you just tell them to take the cart and keep their quarter. A very small but special gesture. They have good hours, but don't get there too late because they aren't open after 9pm. They may close even earlier on Sundays I think...Plus the later you get there, they may be about sold out of things, especially fresh produce, which is what I buy the most of. Even if you end up in a long line, it goes so quick. They just scan and place the item in the cart, so it saves time. Please check them out and try them a couple of visits before you make a judgment. It's a little different, but you will find it's different in a very nice way. Nothing fancy or glamorous about the store, but it is neat, clean, very orderly and has clean restrooms and is run very efficiently. They get you in and out without hassle. read more

This a review is for the newly opened Aldi's on Kempsville Rd, VA Beach. In general, their items are similar to what you find at a Dollar store...nothing special (no name brands ...maybe a couple). They even charge you for a cart? You have to purchase bags or bring your own. Stick with Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, etc., they are miles above Aldi's. Aldi's clientele are not your Harris Teeter/Farm Fresh/Kroger type. I for one, will not be returning. read more
