This is a really neat bookstore to go into. It is right off the Red Line stop at Kendall/MIT…read morestation. It is next to the museum too. It is a really cool shop to walk around and they separate their books by field (physiology, biology, etc). They did have some strange hours and the two staff members working felt very judge mental. They watched us like a hawk and listened in on our conversations.

The Somerville News is a wonderful independent paper and a great antidote to the Gatehouse Media…read moreconglomerate. Sure you have the typos, occasional grammatical errors, and in-town backscratching going on, but sometimes the paper gets a really good scoop and the editors care very much about fostering new talent and generally keep a very open mind for stories. The newstalk section can be pretty funny sometimes and also gives you a good feel for the soul of old-time Somerville. I guess some people might call the paper more "conservative" than The Somerville Journal. Whatever. In my opinion, it's just more INTERESTING and you get the sense that the powers that be at the paper are invested in infusing it with some personality. Sure they've been through some missteps in the past, but I think they recognize the responsibility that comes with running a paper and are up for the challenge. Here's hoping that this independent paper stays the course and has many more years in business.

The new space is even better than the old one. They are currently running a great event, "Your Own…read morePrivate Bookstore," which lets you rent the bookstore for an hour after closing on Friday evenings for a party of 5-10 people while the staff close up. The entire booking fee applies to any purchase you make as well, which I did not expect and found incredibly generous. The staff basically just let you do your thing, though are around in case anyone needs anything. Definitely a good time.

Porter Square Books has a lot going on! It's more than a bookstore, they sell calenders, toys,…read morestuffed animals, stickers, plants, and much more. I wondered here after checking out Paige and Leaf Cafe which they are attached to. The store was crammed with interesting stuff to look at. They also have a small table in the middle of the store plus some chairs scattered around the store for seating to do some reading. I saw a sign on the door that they do events for the community and have book authors can by. They have a bargain and 20% section to save some money. It's big inside and I got lost looking at toys and reading excerpts of some books (including the Grimm Fairytales) and spent about an hour here. Overall, I appreciate the amount of variety of items they carry and I think that sets them apart from other bookstores.

Narrative is a wonderfully decorated oasis to sort through a beautifully and thoughtfully curated…read moreselection of books (with an emphasis on women and LGBTQ authors, heck yeah) and sit in a comfy chair to watch Davis Square pass by. I am only deducting one star because the owner's near constant talking takes away from the zen of the space. It's an incredible feat what she's done in nearly two years but the constancy and volume of her voice makes it hard to focus on perusing titles and cozying up to start reading a book in the lovely nook at the front of the store. The space is small and noises echo. I think a statement at the front to keep voices down would be wise. It's not a library, no, but the sound makes it difficult to really lock in. I wish Narrative well!

It aims to be an inclusive community hub with events, author signings, and merchandise, featuring cozy reading nooks and a focus on diverse voices in romance but also an amazing children's book and sitting area that is perfection to every momma bear ! While in Boston I promised my mini I'd buy her a new book for her collection back home and this book store caught my eye while having a beautiful evening stroll with my love. Service is so sweet and kind , the set up is cozy and the smell of coffee and books is simply perfection. Value is fantastic as well ! I will always make a trip just for this store when in Boston and plan to bring my little one up for a long weekend , I can't wait to see what she picks !

They also had children, horror, educational, fiction and more. They have a cafe inside of the book store where you can stay, read and drink coffee at the same time. Bonus points for the extremely spacious and clean bathrooms.
