One day, the guy just starts sniping at me for no apparent reason: "Why's your hair wet? Don't come here with wet hair - what's wrong with you?" Um, I just woke up and showered before I came over? It was just your average Monday. I needed a shape up on my undercut. So I went here. To Alex barbershop. Where Steve was working. I sat down and confident Steve, razor in hand, began to shave half my head at lightening speed. It was all over in two minutes. Turns out all it takes is two minutes FOR A MAN TO FUCK UP YOUR LIFE. I left a bit shaken. Got on the subway, took my long luscious pony tail down... WHEN THIS HAPPENED(see image 1 for dramatic hair loss). Never, never, never will I ever go to this "clip joint" ever again. Might be the worst haircut I ever received in my entire life. Nowadays these so called "barbers" only want to use the electric clippers to trim hair. I suppose it takes out all the guess work of actually knowing how to use scissors. In the middle of my haircut, this young guy (Alex' son), told me he never formally trained to become a barber at a school, or anything. He said he picked it up watching his Dad, so I must assume he has no license to cut hair. When I pointed out a part that I thought was uneven he said he didn't think so, but when I mentioned again he quickly snipped a nice little hole on the side of my head. It will grow out, so it's no real problem. If you're getting a buzz cut then you might fare better than I did. If you're looking for a decent haircut from a barber who know how to use actual scissors you may be left wanting. read more

After researching the options on Yelp - and finding nothing that was reasonably-priced and well-reviewed - I decided to go for a walk to find one myself. Having not known that Alex Barber Shop was rated 2.5 stars, I went in. WHAT A GREAT EXPERIENCE IT WAS! There was no line, Alex greeted me, asked how I wanted my hair done, and cut it with a trimmer on the sides and carefully with scissors on top. Alex Barber Shop is a really solid simple place to get a haircut in the Upper West Side. For $12 you can get a great haircut from some guys with an accent so thick you will probably have a hard time understanding. I'll admit they aren't as friendly and chatty as folks at a salon but you're also not paying salon prices so there you go. They certainly aren't hostile, they just cut the hair and that's it. They give me a good haircut in about 10 minutes I would say (but I basically get a crew cut so that's an appropriate time frame). They also offer straight razor shaves which one of these days I will try. Basically it's an old-fashioned barber shop in this world of Supercuts and other such chain salons. If you're looking for a quick cheap haircut check them out, and if they do a bad job? The younger guy asked how long it has been since my last haircut and when I answered, told me if I wait that long again he will refuse to cut it because he "could be cutting 3 people's hair in the time it takes to cut mine." That's where they lost me. He continues to say "I tell my customers 3 weeks, 1 month max. I don't do overdue haircuts." Can't find the quality time to cut the hair I'm paying you to cut? We were off to a rocky start when I showed up at Alex Barber Shop. There was no time to be wasted, he demanded I sit right down. Considering the reviews I read before, I went in thinking if I got the son, I would get a good cut, but hostile behavior and if I got the dad I'd get a bad cut, but the atmosphere would be okay. However, I got the total opposite, a good cut and an extremely awkward experience. I tried to make some small talk, but he wasn't having it. I asked him about some of the negative reviews, which he deflected as if they were all positive. Perhaps he is living in his own world where all he is here to do is cut hair and not worry about pleasing anyone. Understandable. After all, I was there to get my haircut and that is exactly what he did. And a hell of a job at it. The fade is on point and the V in the back was a nice added 2018 flair (according to Alex). However, I was extremely uncomfortable the entire time as the sharp head rest dug into the back of my neck, ESPECIALLY DURING THE FACE MASSAGE. At the end I got to chat with his son who gave me more insight on the negative reviews. Maybe people can overreact and take things to heart when sometimes the barber is not to blame. Even though I felt as if I could be kicked out at any moment, I do not regret the experience because I got an awesome haircut. Here's my advice... if you go there keep your mouth shut, don't complain about the prices, don't let your kid play on their phone during, and you will get a good cut. read more

The kid running the place is crazy and hostile. Beware. I went here for a while, then stopped going 3 years ago. Haircuts were cheap but always pretty bad. Tonight I went because I needed a cut for an event tomorrow. Gave them one more chance. I got totally butchered by the first kid, then the "owner" stepped in and salvaged it. While doing so he mumbled something about "loyal customers get[ting] better haircuts". I asked if he was saying what I thought and to clarify. He said something along the lines of "you're getting it". Fast forward and he's screaming at me (including how ugly my haircut is, seeming to have forgotten he just did it - wtf) and I'm telling him he's nuts, which he is. Just had a very bizarre and unpleasant experience with this place. Went in for a haircut. Told the guy my old barber had retired. As soon as I sat down he started firing questions at me: where was this barber? How long were you his customer? What avenue and street was he located on? It was just really strange. Then he asked how much I had paid the former barber for a haircut. I told him that was really none of his business (I said this politely as I could, since the guy was in the middle of cutting my hair and I wanted it to come out decently). However, his whole line of questioning was entirely inappropriate and made me very uncomfortable. When he was done, he asked for $20. I told him that there was a gigantic sign right in front of the shop saying that haircuts are $15.95. His response was that I must have been paying more at my former barber, therefore he was going to charge me more. I gave him a twenty and he stalked away muttering nasty things under his breath. Last time I set foot in this place. How this guy stays in business is beyond me. read more

He told me it was $2 to charge my phone (I had plugged it in for the 7 minutes I was there). I told him he just lost his tip and I would never return. Wanting to get my hair recently on a Saturday. Usually go to Supercuts, but I didn't like the people working there that day, so started walking the neighborhood, looking for a simple barber shop. Boy, was I glad I did. Saw Alex's on the side street and walked in. Quiet, simple, with one guy in the chair getting his hair cut by who I think was Alex. Two other barbers (older and younger). I drew the Isaac, the younger. I haven't been to a traditional barber shop in about 15 years. Don't know what I've been thinking. For the price, it can't be beat. But that's just the start. He was very casual and conversational, asking me why I chose their place, and where I usually get my hair cut. He listened to what I wanted carefully, and did an excellent job with a combination of the razor, scissors and thinning shears. He shaved the back of my neck with a straight razor and used a hot towel. I think it's 15 now for a cut, so I left 25, which is still a lot cheaper than just about anywhere else. Never had a shave at a barber shop, and they have a great shave and cut deal too. Maybe I'll try that next time. read more

Disgusting. The workers at this place are animals. They falsely advertised the price and when I pointed it out to them they all (including the girl) started ganging up on me! I'm the CUSTOMER! Also the thief that cut my hair didn't shut up the entire haircut about how he had a nice car with great rims and blah blah blah. He also bragged during the haircut that he could beat anybody up and how tough he was. It all ended with them charging me $36 for an advertised $16 haircut.
