Yes they are ok. Do the job. With 3 price increases in the last few months I would expect that when I sit at the chair, you have swept the floor and cleaned the chair...not so appealing to sit on the guy's hair before me. That will also give time for the chair to cool off! Opening the windows a little for fresh air would we welcome as well and finally keeping the stations clean and neat would be really appealing. read more

We where strolling around town, stumbled upon this shop. I liked how secure it was, pushing a button to unlock the two doors from the street level..up a staircase and you arrive to the front door. 7 barber chairs and an array of gentlemen getting their cuts. Hubby needed a trim, luckily they had an opening and took him in right away. The barber did exactly what we asked which was nice rather than adding his own touch like some do. I checked in on yelp and they had a free shampoo, what was lovely is that the barber offered the free shampoo before I even showed the yelp promo! If I could rate any lover I would. The guy tells me that they're not allowed to to use a for hair lines or shape ups, or edging with one, (I'm black) my coworker(not black) gets in the chair after me and he proceeds to offer him a razor line or clipper line up. Just 20 mins ago and 30$ ago you weren't allowed to use razors, .....can I get my money back for blatant racism and lackluster results. read more

I tried to see if after washing my hair and drying it my hair would look better. NO. This is far and away the single WORST haircut I have ever gotten. When I sat down I mentioned that I would probably need a shampoo as I was wearing a hat to cover up my bed head, he ignored it and started cutting anyway. He responded to my growing apprehension by saying my hair grows weird. I am asian...my hair is dead straight. I've never heard from any barber or stylist about my hair growing weird...I told him that's why i wanted to shampoo first to wash out all the matted hair at which point he started to say that it has nothing to do with it...this place is not cheap if the customer wants a shampoo just do it or at least tell me it's an extra charge...don't gaslight me and tell me my hair is weird because you are too lazy to do your fking job. Bottom line: Mens NYC barber you can trust with good cuts at great prices. Revised, because after a shower, the cut was less flattering. Still very good, just not as great. May need a touch up later. More of the story: I'm in town for a Broadway show, and was way overdue for a haircut. Did a Yelp message, walked over from hotel near Central Park and dropped in on "Said", the manager, who seated me immediately. I was well beyond the normal limit for miracles, but Said was not daunted by my rowdy, knotted mess. Within minutes, he did a great scissor cut and style. He was keeping track of sales (interesting to watch him move hair clips on the board) and direct others. Also watched Maria, another accomplished stylist confidently work with a client. Said wasn't too talkative, but he was pleasant to talk to. In the end, I was impressed enough to let him trim up my mustache- something that I let no others touch. He did a very good job, and wife and daughter both appreciated and approved the haircut and trim up. Yelp Elite Alert: I think he was "onto" me, because they only charged me for the haircut, not the mustache trim- but *hey* - he did do a nice job, and the wait was next to nothing for anyone stopping in. read more

Found this joint whilst waiting for Chinese next door and after reading some Yelp reviews. Arrived mid afternoon mid week requesting a beard shave and back neck shave with blade. It wasn't busy so they took action straight up. I think my barbers names was Jose and he was friendly enough. He did a pretty good job given that this was my 1st ever beard shave/clip. I really loved the hot towel to soften the skin and clean my face, that was the stand out. Cost was $47usd which I'm not sure is cheap or just right. I have very low expectations for haircuts, but I came here twice and both times I got a quality cut. Dude (forgot his name, the man from Malaysia) was friendly, and sensed I was ambivalent at the end of the cut, and offered to cut it more. Very precise. I needed a haircut fast in order to save time on my wedding proposal plans. I was waiting for my ring to finish and I figured, "what's out here in Midtown?". I found this place! I went in at around 2:30 ish and there was no line at all and I was able to sit right down to the chair to get started. The gentleman by the name of Mario was able to give me a great haircut exactly how I wanted it. It feels really good to finally find a place that can cut my hair right and also make me feel comfortable. He was nice and so were the other barbers. I am not sure how Manhattan prices compare but for the service, quality of the cut I thought the price was fair. Only thing I will say though is that if you're looking to tip your barber, make sure you bring cash. They currently do not put tips on the credit/debit card. I have to make sure I send Mario a thank you note because I was in a bit of a rush to leave and I had no cash.. I know, I felt horrible leaving! I popped in here for a beard trim on a Saturday. This barber shop in in the heart of midtown and is very busy during the week with local office workers. However, on Saturdays, the wait is not bad. at all I was in need of a beard trim and I am very particular on what I want. The guy who worked on my beard did a very good job doing what I asked for, spending the extra time to get it right. I got the whole shmear - nice work on the clippers on the beard, cleaning up the edges on my neck and mustache, and the straight razor on the back of my neck. Good stuff. read more

Despite living and working in locations not very close to midtown, I have been getting haircuts from Joseph for close to 8 years now. From my first haircut with him back when I was still in college, I knew I had finally found my guy. He is an excellent barber who exercises extreme care and precision whenever he gives a cut. More importantly, he listens to his customers. I'm a very particular person, yet he makes an effort to cut the hair exactly how I want it to be cut to the finest detail. He'll never go rogue and cut the hair how he feels it should look; he'll always cut it exactly as the customer wants it. If he doesn't think something will look good he'll always say he's happy to do as I'd like, but he'll tell me his opinion on the matter and usually I'll trust him (and he's right 99% of the time). BOTTOM LINE- Joseph gives great attention to detail for every single one of his haircuts/clients. There is nobody in the world I trust more cutting my hair than him. He is a professional, honest, and hardworking barber and I consider him a friend. I cannot say enough good things about Barber Shop on 56th. LASTLY, on the few occasions where I was unable to get a haircut with Joseph, I got my haircut from Wee. Wee is a an incredibly skilled and precise barber as well. He is unbelievably focused and always gives a great haircut exactly as I want it. You really can't go wrong with Joseph or Wee. read more

I found this place on Yelp after I recently moved close by from further down and needed to find a place within walking distance for quick cuts. If I was comparing this to a full service salon that manually cuts and styles your hair, I might give it less stars. But for a place where you want a regular, quick good haircut, this place is worth every one of its five stars. It's fast - I'm usually in and out in 20m. Normally that might meant a compromise in quality but each time I've been very happy. That's because, at least in my case, one of the owner is always there and walks and monitors the cuts. If he is not satisfied, he busts out his razor and steps in. Happened to me each time I was there. Price is reasonable for the location - $25 per cut plus tip. They accept card for the base but prefer cash and the tip can only be in cash. They are generally open including one day during the weekend. They're also conveniently located at least to me. read more

This place is brutal. I've gone here twice in the past 2 months and I'll never go again. They rushed me each time, and now my hair is uneven. I also got a shave and the guy just cut my skin up so bad. Told me I had sensitive skin, that's why I was bleeding so much. Also, he cut my sideburns in this weird skinny shape without asking me. These guys just don't put any attention to detail in their haircuts and it's not cheap. Definitely seems more like a tourist spot to me. read more

After recommendations from a friend decided to try it out. I had an appointment yesterday for a beard trim with Joseph at 430pm. I called him to tell him I'm running a little late. He said it's fine as long as I'm there before 4:45. I arrived at 4:40. And one of the barbers welcomed me telling me he'll be trimming my beard. I told him I'm looking for Joseph, he said that he was. I had my doubts, but was in a rush to finish. After I was done, turns out it was Armando. The trim was below average. Been coming here for almost 10 years. Joseph does very good haircuts, but the customer service is below commercially-acceptable levels. Multiple times I have booked haircuts in advance with a specific person, online and by phone, only to show up to find they are not working that day. Most recently, I booked online and called ahead to confirm both that they were open and that my person was working that day, received a text confirmation an hour before, only to show up and the store was closed, no one there. Genuwine old school no fuss barbershop. They are on the second floor and you have to push the upper left-hand doorbell for them to buzz you in. I walked in just after they opened and they cheerfully squeezed me in. The barber took my coat, and my hat and made sure I did not forget the hat on the way out. My barber was meticulous, friendly and had the right level of chattiness. They have a four dollar discount deal if you check in prior to service. Haircut was exactly what I was looking for, and I thought $25 is a fair price for Manhattan. Felt like a million bucks when I left, and my wife even said wow! when I met her for breakfast afterwards. The place is decorated with a few vintage barber tools and photos but this is no Disneyfied re-creation. Definitely will return if I have chance. read more
