This is the first review I have ever written and we are so thankful to Nancy and Alex for the coordination and execution of several home repairs for us. We are so relieved to have someone we can call on and trust to do an amazing and professional job with super fair pricing. I'll start with our 100 plus year old front door. It has a mortise lock and our doorknob stopped functioning properly. We had three different locksmiths and one person who specializes in repairing old doors look at it. They either told us it couldn't be repaired, ghosted us, or made bad repairs that contributed to further issues. Alex looked at it and was able to fix it in around 30 minutes. It was the first time we have been able to shut our door without having to lock it to keep it from blowing open in almost a year! On the same visit, Alex fixed multiple issues including water damage outside of our French doors and replacing weather stripping on three doors, fixing several kitchen drawers and lazy susans that weren't opening and closing properly, and fixing our bathroom door so that it shuts completely and can be locked. We've been pushing a stool in front of it for almost two years because we couldn't get it to shut properly! Alex was wonderful and I can't recommend him highly enough. Courteous, trustworthy, and capable, he is the consummate handyman. He fixed the chandelier installation that the *professional electrician* I first hired could not figure out how to do. I live in an older home with some quirks, like (apparently) small light box holes in the ceiling; while the electrician first told me he couldn't install the new chandelier, and then installed it -at my request- in a way that left half of the box sticking out from the ceiling, Alex was able to ascertain the problem and then troubleshoot it creatively and efficiently. He also let me know what he was doing, answered my questions, and cleaned up after the job was done. Now the light is installed flush with the ceiling and looks as beautiful as I hoped. Alex did a terrific job on several projects throughout our house, and we will be glad to hire him again, anytime. Within just a few hours, he secured a loose handrail on our basement stairs, fixed a broken doorbell, replaced a commode bolt, replaced gliding tracks on several kitchen drawers, and rebuilt a kitchen drawer that had completely fallen apart. Everything about working with Alex and Nancy was straightforward and easy -- scheduling, getting an estimate, Alex was prompt and very professional, he accepts payment by Venmo, and they emailed a receipt to me right away. Alex even went out to buy the correct parts to repair the kitchen drawer tracks. Based on a neighbor's recommendation, I contacted Alexandria Home Improvement to handle several small "handyman" jobs in my home. They included installing a new hose on my kitchen sink, moving a wall-mounted knife rack, repairing a ding in a bedroom door, and adjusting a latch on a computer armoire. The work was performed today, and I am very pleased with their professionalism and workmanship. The process of setting up an appointment was easy, they quickly sent me an estimate based on my descriptions of the work to be done that was reasonable. Mr. Alexander von Guggenberg arrived as scheduled and performed the work efficiently and with obvious experience. He also answered my questions about other issues that I may want to address in future. Alex came out after a fully booked day for my emergency, which was a critter of some kind trapped between my inner and outer fireplace flue pipes. It would be awful if it died in there but it was also going to be hard to get it out, so my chimney guy thought. Chimney guy did not do that kind of work. After checking other possibilities for ingress and egress, Alex cut a neat square in the drywall behind the pre-fab fireplace and after using a camera to see if we could identify what was there and exactly where it was, he cut an opening in the outer pipe and suddenly a tiny bird dropped down and landed on the lower cut edge! Victory!!! I am so grateful that the bird did not die in there and I am sure the bird would also express its appreciation if it could! read more

I felt like I was learning from the master as we discussed multiple aspects of home maintenance--all while he installed a vent fan in my bathroom! We were referred to Alex and Nancy by a good friend who lives in Old Town Alexandria. We had quite a "laundry list" of projects that needed to be taken care of, and we were prepared for a possible drawn-out process. That was not to be. I was off to the hardware stores that morning, came home with the needed materials, and Alex was finished by not-too late that same afternoon! His rates are a little high on the face, but don't let that stop you from employing them, as Alex worked virtually non-stop and very efficiently, but not without being thorough and careful. Highly recommend Alex! Nancy was great to work with on the phone, able to Facetime alongside Alex so I could show the two of them exactly what the problem in my bathroom was and how we could figure out a way to proceed. Ultimately, Alex ended up replacing the framing around the window in my shower and treat the mold that had grown underneath the pre-existing structure. He was very helpful in not only finishing the job he had come out for, but he provided me tips and tricks for keeping the rest of my bathroom in tip top shape. He went even further and re-caulked and re-sealed my tub after I had asked about the best product to use to do so. Alex & Nancy were a great help to me: I needed to replace a wall a/c unit in my condo and had no clue what to do. After getting a quote from a local AC company of $1000 for the unit alone--no labor-- I contacted Alex and he came over and guided me in finding the same unit for $400. On Friday, June 2nd at 2 pm I emailed Alex that the unit had just arrived but because it was the beginning of a holiday weekend, I told him that there was no rush and installation could certainly wait until the following week. He arrived in less than an hour, and by dinner time, the old unit was gone, the new one was successfully working, neat caulking & re-plastering were done! I am a happy, cool camper. read more

Have used Alex on a couple of different occasions and he has always provided the highest quality work. The last instance involved installation of two screen doors that didn't go as anticipated - the previous door installation presented several problems that Alex had to overcome. Despite the challenges he got the screen doors in soundly and they look great. Really appreciate that he took the time to it right instead of papering over any existing problems or issues, but from previous work I also knew that was the way he does things. We have used Alex for close to 15 years to handle projects large and small in our historic Alexandria House. These houses require special skill and Alex has it. Alex did a phenomenal job fixing two bathroom fans, closing up an unused vent, and fixing a bi-fold door for me! He was extremely responsive and on time for all of our appointments. I called Alexandria Home Improvement to repair a rotted out and collapsing threshold between my driveway and basement door caused by water infiltration. Alex arrived same-day and not only neatly replaced the wood, but also improved it by grouting, sealing, and elevating the threshold to divert water away from the basement door. Worked perfectly.
