I considered at Rent-A-Pro when I was looking to have some work done around the house before hosting my family for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience with Ted and would not recommend him due to his lack of professionalism. First of all, we had to reschedule my walk through 4 different times. This should have been my first clue to move on with other handymen I researched, but I tried to give Ted a chance. He actually offered to do my walk through free of charge because of the scheduling issues, so I moved forward with it. After the walk through, I was issued an estimate, which was reasonably priced. I decided that I would hire a smaller, independent contractor to some immediate small projects around the house before my family arrived (hang a ceiling fan, mirror, and flood light), and hire Ted and his company to complete larger projects once I had some more money saved (build out a few closets, hang some cabinets, repair a porch roof, and repair some doors). When I thanked him for the estimate and told him of my plans, he went off, and my experience quickly took a nosedive. He rambled on and on about how I wasted his time (even though I explicitly told him I would hire him at a later date for the larger projects) and then he made a biased statement that was offensive and unprofessional about working with customers in Southeast D.C. When I mentioned to him that I thought his comment was racially and social-economically charged and wasn't appreciated, he flipped out. I told him I would share an honest review of my experience, including his racially charged comment, and he threatened legal action against me, which isn't even possible. This was all such an unfortunate experience, but I appreciate him showing me who he was. If you are a person of color, ally, or someone who cares about how the people you hire treat others, I would not bother working with him and his company. If he will speak this way to a customer's face, I can only imagine how he speaks in private. Spend your money where you are celebrated not tolerated! read more

Unfortunately the owner Ted has misled the public and was dishonest in his comment to my first review. In his own words, he lied when he misstated that I spoke to his staff and that I demanded and "basically telling us to not even bother", which are false statements. Ted cannot produce any phone record documentation that a conversation ever took place. He may claim he called me, but Ted nor his staff have never actually spoken to me. Attached is a screen print image of the owner's comments where he referred to me as "he" and "his". If Ted or his staff actually spoke to me, then they would know that I am obviously a woman. Documented proof that the owner of this company has lied about the actual situation. Unbelievable the lies that this owner will claim. Fact is all correspondence was via documented emails directly with the owner. I have attached my original email to this updated review and the public will see that I was consistently courteous and even stated "Thank you" twice to him. The only reason that prompted the owner Ted to apologize was when he saw that I wrote a negative review revealing his scathing remarks to me. This obviously was not sincere because he waited a week after the incident and was scared that I exposed his true colors. He claimed to "apologize" for being rude and crass to me; however it was not genuine because exactly three days later on March 8th the owner attacks and blames me for his temper tantrum on his comments to my first review. Simply appalling. It is unfortunate because I only kindly declined to his bid (see original review with email correspondences). It is apparent to readers that Ted will vilify anyone that has a bad experience with him or his company. I encourage readers to review all of Ted's comments to the other customers that gave him a bad review. He accuses his customers of all the wrong doing. This owner does not take criticism as a learning experience nor does he take responsibility nor fault. He was even condescending to the reviewer that gave him a three-star review. It is obvious to all readers that in Ted's own words, that he continues to view that his customers are beneath him. In his own comment to me, "I should have over looked your email and moved on", validates this. Overall just a horrid experience from my interactions with the owner. Responding rudely to your customer base is wrong, but lying about the situation is setting an all time low. read more

I highly regret my decision to hire Ted for screen repair work on our home. After many delays listed out below, we decided to cancel the job and complete the work ourselves. We still have not received our $250 deposit. I will revise this post if we ever do receive back our deposit. Here is a timeline of what happened, you can decide for yourself if Ted is an honest person or not. June 14th - I spoke with Ted on the phone about screen repair for 11 windows and 1 screen door. We arranged for the work to be completed on June 20th and I mailed the money order deposit. June 20th - Ted said that his technician was not feeling well and that he would have to reschedule. We selected June 24th. June 24th - Ted called and said that he was not feeling well. We rescheduled for June 27th. June 27th - Flat tire, running late. Then eventually Ted said that we needed to reschedule due to rain. To be fair, it was raining. Because no one was available to meet Ted this day or the next, he had said that he could complete the screen repair from outside the house with a ladder. June 28th - Ted told us that he couldn't take out the screens from the outside because the tabs were on the inside. There were plenty of holes in these old screen, and he could have easily made new holes in the old screens. I have personally completed screen repair before and see no reason why he couldn't take them out. We eventually rescheduled for July 18th. July 18th - Someone at the house tested positive for covid. We told Ted, who then said that he would still be alright with coming if everyone in the house was alright with him coming. After checking with everyone and deciding that everyone would just stay out of his way, we told Ted that we would still like him to come for the repair. By this point (a few hours later), Ted told us that he had already scheduled a different job and cancelled our job. We rescheduled for July 22nd. July 22nd - Ted called and said that he had been working all week in the hot sun and was having bathroom issues. He wanted to reschedule. We told him that we had already rescheduled too many times and that we wanted our deposit back. July 26 - We completed the screen repair ourselves in a few hours. read more

Ted and Team did a great bathroom shower remodel for me. Originally, I hoped we'd be able to repair some of the tiles so I could have the tiles reglazed but that was a no-go because the shower walls weren't originally installed well. On short notice, Ted and Team were able to remodel the shower, replace ceiling vent fans in the both bathrooms, fix two leaking toilets, and a roof leak all in the span of a week. Ted and Team were very communicative, which I really appreciated. I wasn't local so they sent me pictures almost every day showing progress as well as a daily invoice so I could see where I was from a budgeting perspective. They also forwarded me emails of any materials purchased so I have the receipts in case of any warranty issues. I've used Ted and Team in the past, and I look forward to continuing to work with them in the future. read more

Worst contractor I've dealt with and I've dealt with a handful of piss poor contractors. I have a condo in Reston VA and currently reside in WA state for work. Currently waiting little over 6 months for reply on an email and got tired of the unprofessionalism so I was going to file a complain to the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU. Shocked because I went to Angie's list and was referred this company. When I went to the BBB, this company has an F rating. ALSO THERE IS AN ALERT LISTED: "Licensing- On 3/23/2016 BBB confirmed that Rent-A-Pro Handyman Service had not obtained a necessary license from MHIC or any other state where business is operational. Such a license is required in MD, VA and DC for businesses providing home improvement services. My renters assumed they were coming in for an estimate, as all the other contractors previous has done, but were told that they were there to do the work...which my renters didnt expect and had a work conflict. My renters were upset/irritated and let the company know which they turned around and let me know my renters got pissed off. So it didn't start on the right foot but after the initial visit, my renters said the handyman who came wasn't there for long and was even given a FREE contractor ladder a previous contractor left. My last email to them: (the back and forth emails are 8 pages front and back and cant post that all here but have no problem sharing as I have nothing to hide. My renters were out of town for a week and then I went out of the country and just got back last night. I have reread through all our emails since September. In the beginning I told you I had a list of 8 things that needed to be fixed. Some were on my pocket, and some were on the renters pocket. That's when you verbally told me that you would provide receipts for material and invoices for labor so I could charge my renters properly. I specifically remember this because how else was I supposed to figure out how much their repairs were off the total bill? If you didn't tell me this, I would have gone somewhere else. 2nd, I specifically remember you stating "we have a special that is 8 hours of handyman service @$499 and with that you receive one hour of free service". Please refer to your email you sent me on 9/21/2016 836AM. Those are your exact words. Next your email sent to me 9/30/2016 948AM states "If for any reason my crew member was not there at that time you will be invoiced for the exact time he starts. (Remember, I told you he was late) Another email 11/1/2016 452PM You wrote "all receipts provided". The last email I received from you 12/26/2016 states that you will talk to Nancy and what what receipts you have and can send them to me. So, as I said in the beginning, I'm STILL waiting on receipts/invoices for initial work done. I need to be able to charge my renters the proper amt that they are liable for. I have not yet to this day received any invoice or receipts. You keep stating 8 hours but per your initial email its 9. So PLEASE advise me in regards to receipts and invoices and how much work was done. I'm still very patiently waiting. As far as the door, the renter is not able to accommodate your work schedule of 8am on a week day due to work. Maybe on the weekend, but not during the week. What is really frightening here is that this man is now responding to my honest review almost a year later. Also his first response 2 days ago was one of bashing me and stating that I was a liar and some other nonsense. I called Rent-a-Pro to do a new door install in an existing finished doorway. Unlike other handyman companies, they didn't come out for an estimate, so I was a little bit skeptical about their ability to provide an accurate quote. I was also concerned that the first few hours of the day would be consumed with assessing the work and purchasing materials, so I'd be paying for time when no work would be happening - and I didn't know how efficient the handyman would be with his time, as he was essentially getting paid by the hour. As soon as the handyman arrived, he assessed the doorway and discussed options with us. He understood exactly what was (and was not) possible and gave us a realistic estimate for how long the work would take. As soon as we decided on the path forward, he set off to Home Depot with my husband to purchase materials. One hour later, he was hard at work and - with the exception of a quick lunch - he worked busily all day. He did excellent work and definitely didn't waste any time. The thing that I appreciated most is that he told us from the start that he wouldn't be able to complete the work in a single day, so he set realistic expectations for us. He actually completed more work than he had originally thought possible on the first day, leaving minimal work remaining for the second day, and he used the extra time to take care of some other tasks around the house. Even at 1.5 days of labor, the overall cost for the doorway + other work was less than all of the other quotes that I had received and the quality was excellent. read more

Did good work on our office. Replaced a light fixture, installed a hand dryer. Can't complain about the work, just didn't like that they charged full priced labor hours for the guy's drive time to home depot and back, which took at least 45 minutes. I didn't bother disputing it so I don't know if they would've discounted it, but just decided not to use them in the future. Be sure to discuss fees before the job, I didn't. read more

I have used them for all kinds of tasks - installing projectors, plumbing, painting, installing locks etc. Ted's crew is professional and well trained. My friend recommended rentapro after someone I hired didn't show up. I was in a bind because I needed work done on my house that couldn't wait any longer. I reached out to Ted and he was very responsive and literally had someone out at my house there next day. He told me someone would be out at 7am. After hearing that I called BS but as it may someone was out at 6:45. They knocked the work out and left. The workmanship was excellent and would highly recommend! I won't go into detail on their craftsmanship - just know that all the work performed was way above expectation with amazing attention to detail. I do want to expand on two things: 1) Professionalism: These guys don't mess around - I honestly feel that they take a huge amount of pride in their work. The worker showed up 30 minutes EARLY. Diagnosed a problem that we had BETTER THAN AN A/C TECHNICIAN could and fixed the problem for a fraction of the cost! Also suggested additional work that could be done quickly due to the other projects we had them doing. For example, they installed a power outlet next to the new light-switch we had installed. One of our major complaints for our bathroom was a lack of a power outlet! They recommended that we put one in after they noticed we didn't have one - didn't even have to ask! 2) Genuine care: They performed the work like they were working on their own home. I went up into the attic half expecting a mediocre insulation and patch job... was surprised to see how well everything was wrapped up and the extra duct work purchased to fix broken portions. We didn't even ask them to go that far - they just did it because it was the right way to fix it. Overall - very very happy with their work. Would recommend to friends and family. Our friend recommended Rent-A-Pro to us after having used them for numerous jobs himself. We were not disappointed. We had a large portion of our ceiling and part of the master bathroom wall/door that needed to be re-done due to prior plumbing work. Rent-A-Pro quoted us at a reasonable rate and did a great job. I'm a stickler for attention to details, and most contractors aren't exactly the most detail-oriented, but the guys at Rent-A-Pro were thorough and meticulous. One guy even finished a little ahead of time, so he offered to paint (which was not part of the quote) to fill the amount of time that we were paying. We are very satisfied with Rent-A-Pro and are already in the process of hiring them for some other housework. Highly recommend! read more
