Could this be the best shawarma I've ever had? All I know is that I can't stop thinking about it. I came here for lunch with a couple of coworkers. I got the kafta wrap and they both got chicken shawarmas. When it comes to wraps, it's all about the extras for me. They had all the greatest hits: hummus, cilantro, pickles turnips, and hot sauce, plus a whole bunch of other options that were very fresh and tasty. My wrap was delicious! The beef was perfectly grilled, flavourful, and the wrap had the perfect balance of meat and veggies. This place gets a bit busy during lunch hour, with lots of people getting takeout. The first time I went it was ok. The meat was not sliced of the vertical grill, but brought out from some kind of a warm place. But it was passable, anf the portions adequate. I decided to give this store another chance. On my second visit the portions were very skimpy for both meat and filler ( various salad). This time I added a falafel sandwich order amd the falafel were already fried, not freshly cooked. They were edible, but just! I tipped generously both times and I hope the owner is well meaning enough to be interested enough to read his reviews and adjust. I see this place only has 3 stars, a very unfair rating. Alex, the owner is not only a nice gentleman, but also has a tasty shawarma, reasonably priced and he recently changed his fries to homemade and fresh, GREAT idea. I always ask where the owners are from (background) to gauge how that country would make their shawarmas, I'm just like that lol. Moving along, I believe Alex said he is from Syria. I was actually on my way to another shawarma place until I spotted Alex's sign! It didn't show in my search but thought I'd give it a shot. Boy! Am I glad I did, the beef kafta was so delicious I didn't think the chicken kobob would stand a chance! But as soon as I tasted the chicken I forgot the kobob. Brilliant! This was the first time staying in Markham, On and with in walking distance of so many dinning establishments. My second night here I decided to try something new that I've never had before! I searched Google maps for a place close by and found Alex's Falafel & Shawarma. I ordered the plate of Beef Shawarma with delicious hummus, lentil, rice, tabouli salad, potato salad, a pita, some tahini sauce and the most amazing samosa I have ever tried! The portion was huge but just the right amount for the affordable cost. The food was amazing and the host was so welcoming . I will definately revisit this establishment next time I am in the area. This place use to be good, but no longer. I went there 2 months ago and I ordered a chicken shawarma plate. The guys gives me the left over chicken bits that were cut from who knows how long. It was dried out and barely edible. I asked him for extra garlic paste and he gives me 2 scoops of it from the smallest spoon I have ever seen. I remember when I first used to hit up Alex he was in there alone with a handful of curious customers at lunch, until he became so busy he had to enlist help. I've had over 3.2 million shwrmas in my life, and I can honestly say Alex's are solid as folk. I typically order a spicy chicken shwarma with everything and then some. Alex will dress it with all the standard toppings such as: onion, lettuce, tomatoe, turnip, tahini, hummus, tabouli, and a few other delicious additions such as garlic sauce and cabbage. The combination of toppings and sauces make for a holy medley. One of the keys to Alex's success is that he toasts the shwarmas well done via a panini press. This heats everything well together and toasts the shwarma giving it a delicate crisp. As solid as the shwarmas are I have to put in a good word for the falafels. I'm a self proclaimed T-Rex, meaning I eat meat like a greedy carnivore, so for me to skip a juicy chicken or beef shwarma for chick peas is big tings. The falafels are made to order in the store and the chip pea mixture is well seasoned, you may top it with any of the above condiments. Overall you're looking to spend $6-8 for a satisfying meal with a drink here. This restaurant deserves a solid 4/5. I would avoid going between 12-1:30pm as it tends to get busy in the rather small establishment. There are at least 4 large tables in there to sit down, and a clean washroom. Alex Shawarma is the best in Markham and perhaps in the GTA. The ingredients are fresh and Alex is friendly. The key is that he builds his wrap with a great balance of sauces, veg, meat and bread. Some places overdo sauces or meat. Alex's Shawarma is not too messy or to dry or not enough or too much meat or too big etc. The hot sauce is balanced so it does not blow your head off but has a kick. Also it is not cold he grills it just enough that it is hot and the bread is crispy. Great Job Alex. I'm having lunch at Alex's two times a week and it does not get old. read more

Biggest complaint was that the shish touk was mix of dark and white meat rather than nice breast pieces like every other place. Was more like large shawarma meat. We love Alex's Shawarma! We were so sad when he closed down the location in Unionville and then by accident saw the sign on Woodbine. Whoohooo....The shawarmas aren't huge (which we like, get two if you are really hungry) but they are excellent. The hot sauce is amazing and the chicken is well cooked. He grills the wraps properly (not in the wrapper like other places). The price is really good...2 for $11.99. It's our Friday night go-to after work. Yum. read more

NEGATIVE 10 STARS. I went too this place on 11/14/15 and can conclude it is the worst place. Not only was the chicken dry and BURNT, the lettuce mix was brown and hard. To make matters worst my girlfriend and I ended up getting food poisoning. Considering it was the only thing I ate that day I have a pretty good feeling it was from that place. Being a chef myself I should have seen the signs. The mayo was sitting on the counter not in the fridge, the guy doesn't wear gloves and touches everyone's food with bare hands, and he didn't wash them after servicing the previous customer. Alex's has very delicious food and Alex (owner) is very nice to my boyfriend and I when ever we go. I enjoy the beef shwarma the best - I even order it with "a little fat". It gives it extra flavoring and also roasted tomatoes. I don't usually order chicken shwarma as I find them to be a little dry. I've had the pistachio baklava rounds - they are amazing! It is flaky and crunchy just how it's suppose to be and it's only $2. The falafel on a pita is very delicious too - but there's not a lot of it; maybe four pieces of falafel. read more

Amazing shawarma....Alex makes 'em the best! I find everywhere else I get shawarma it's always too loosely packed and gets soggy fast. Worse shawarma we ever had. The beef he brought from the back kitchen was refried, dry, tough to eat and more than 90 percent burnt. The beef looked black. Alex is a nice guy and I want to give him a better review but 3 stars is what it actually is. The recipes are great, the only issue is that the chicken is too dry and feels like it was cooked a while ago. The quality of the rice isn't that great either. Despite these obvious problems with quality, I still like the place because everything else is less than 2 stars. The stuff grape leaves are really good...must try them. I love sharwarma and have tried most places except this one. So gave it a try. Ordered a chicken shawarma plate. The guy shaves the meat off the rack and puts it on the grill. First sign. Got the plate to go. Menu says comes with potatoes. No potatoes. Hmmm. Ok guy asks what i want onions tomatoes, pickles , etc. Guy gives me one...yes one pickle. The chicken was dry and old. U know when the outer part is crusty - means old chicken been sitting there for some time. Couldnt eat it. Threw out most. NOTE: if u ever go to a shawarma joint and the ppl have to warm, grill or heat the meat, or the meat warmer is off and the meat is not turning....then cancel ur order and run. read more
