Been looking for a clock repair shop for awhile and based on the positive Yelp! Reviews thought I'd give him a try. Brought in a mantle clock that I hoped to run. When I walked in with, the gentleman who assisted me told me more about the clock than I knew (American-made, about 140 years old). Alex cleaned and oiled it and gave me a new key to wind it because the old key was stripped. I thought the price was reasonable. Clock bongs away happily now. Alex now is repairing my 50 year old Seiko wrist watch after figuring out what had worn out. Can't wait to get it back. Alex is a man of few words but knows his clocks and watches. Essentially paid $20 for my watch to be broken. Brought my watch in and when I got it back and water began leaking inside. I've showered with it everyday for 5 years without a problem, until I brought it here. Brought it back to have it dried out. The next day it is wet inside again, without being exposed to water again. I hadn't even washed my hands with it on. Also, when I dropped it off the guy said they'd replace the strap and that didn't happen, but I didn't have time to wait longer on the pickup day. I have a 130yo german cuckoo clock that had not been properly serviced for over 10 years. It had reached a point where it was so gummed up inside that it started to spontaneously stop once or twice a week, then once or twice a day, and then after only a minute or two. This clock had been purchased 15 odd years before, without weights, and with hands that did not properly grip the their turning mechanism... I bought some weights that I thought aesthetically went well with them, and just treated the hands very gingerly over the years... because otherwise it has been a great clock. Alex got the clocks innards all clean, replaced the hands to otherwise identical hands (returning the originals to me) and validated the size of the weights. Perfect Service, frankly. When I brought my clock back home I hung it up and could immediately see that it was working better. However it did still spontaneously halt every couple days... I was disappointed and messaged Alex that I was bringing it back in under the 2 year warranty he gives. But it turned out unnecessary: He suggested making sure it was perfectly Level, and sure enough that was enough to fix my remaining issue... No return trip needed. Thank you Alex... I was referred here by a friend that is a watch hobbyist. I had an unnamed mechanical watch with an ETA 6497-2 movement that was losing about 3-4 minutes a day. Alex was able to adjust it. He is very friendly and the customer service was great! He quoted me before doing the work and I thought his prices were reasonable and the watch was ready the next day. Cash and Checks only. I wouldn't have problems having him work on my Omega or Girard Perregaux. Although he is located in the Ballard Fred Meyer Jewelry Department (3rd largest Jewelry Retailer in the US) his business is separate from the store, so they obviously trust him. My only other Seattle watch repair experience has been with Ben Bridge or Nesbit's (crème de la crème). I came across Alex's business based on Yelp reviews and gave it a whirl. I walked in circles around the humungous Ballard Fred Meyer and had to ask the Tully's coffee barista where Alex's shop was. After 10 minutes of being lost, I had finally found him. I asked for a battery replacement and handed my watch over. He responded in a strong accent, "15 minutes, $22." I said to myself silently in my head, "Twenty-two dollars??!!" Since I had gone out of my way and no longer had my watch in hand, I paid the $22 and kept my mouth shut. While my watch is still running, the price seemed a bit steep, particularly with unfriendly service. Of course, my second watch's battery died 2 months later, and I went elsewhere. Few weeks later noticed the glass was all fogged up. Decided to take my watch to a different place who told me he replaced the gasket incorrectly so now it will cost $200 to repair. Alex is always glad to see you, and readily interrupts whatever he is working on to greet you and quickly tell you what is possible, and what is practical, for your particular watch. Go back two years later for another replacement battery, and he will recognize you, and can tell you when he last replaced that battery. I brought my Seiko Perpetual Calendar watch for a new battery and possible repair. Alex gave me a price for re-setting the calendar, but he said there were scratches inside the watch indicating it was damaged and it might not be possible to reset the calendar. Ultimately, he could not reset it so he did not charge me for it. His price was reasonable and he only kept my watch for a day. I had brought the same watch into a watch and jewelry shop in Ballard prior to this time for the same service and they not only took 2 weeks for the battery replacement, but must have damaged the perpetual calendar feature. The battery only lasted 7 months which is abnormally short. The cost was abut 75% more than I paid Alex for the same service. read more

I was looking for a local place to get my watch battery replaced. The watch itself was in bad shape, crystal was very very scratched, chipped in two fairly large places, hazy. (I'm not very nice to my watches.) So I read the amazing reviews for Alex's and decide to give it a go, just initially for the battery replacement. I wasn't too sure how expensive, or easy it would be to replace the crystal. I walked in and asked if he could replace the battery, and I handed over my watch. He looks at it and says, "sure. Swiss Army. Oh, the crystal is chipped. Would you like me to replace it? All together with the battery it will be $58 plus tax. 20 minutes." No pauses to think, just kind and friendly, here you go. I dicked around in the Fred Meyer for 20 minutes, and voila my watch hasn't looked so good in years. Take your watch to this man. He will make you very happy. read more

Possibly my situation was a fluke, but I really had a poor experience. I'm not sure if he was busy but my watch came back in far worse condition than when I brought it in. I have a mechanical watch that had a problem with the second hand. To be exact, it had loosened and came off within the case. The watch also has tachymetre capability meaning it has two push buttons for start and reset. I had brought my watch in to have Alex fix the loose seconds hand - a relatively easy task to accomplish. When I stopped in to pick up the watch, I was in a hurry - bad move. So received the watch, paid and left. Later when I looked at it, I saw to my horror, dust under the crystal and the crystal was reset incorrectly onto the front of the watch. I of course thought to go right back and demand these items to be fixed. But then I thought, if he messed up my watch this badly I don't know if I can trust him to fix it. Instead I opted to send my watch to a watchsmith that I trust. That watchsmith sent me an email outlining what he found after opening the watch up. I frankly was shocked. Here's his email: this is what I've found so far: -multiple scratched bezel, scratched case under the bezel -scratched caseback -wrong crystal gasket, hence the poorly pressed crystal. he prob mashed the old one.. -misaligned bezel -broken c clamp on the top pusher. -missing screw and tab on mvmt -dust under crystal So, here's the take aways. First off, if you are just getting a battery changed or band adjustment, he's probably a great option. For anything more complex I'd be a bit leery. Or don't make the mistake I did. Thoroughly check the watch before you pay for it. read more

Alex is phenomenal at his craft. I went to 2 other places and was told they wouldn't work on a Russian watch and didn't know anyone who would. Alex gladly took my watches and did a full swap of all the internal parts from the working one to the broken one. He explained what he did and made sure I knew how to wind the newly refurbished watch. Alex even kept the watch over the weekend and checked on it every 24 hours to make sure it was keeping accurate time. He was very communicative about my options, transparent with his prices, and professional when I followed up. If you need quality work done on a watch then he is definitely the person to do the job. I recently found a 30 year old "QQ" Doraemon watch from Japan in one of my bags. They were cheap manual wind-up novelty watches when they were made. Doraemon is a magic animated cat who does wonderful things, and is sort of a role model. Alex "restored" it by saving the clock face, finding a modern watch it fits in, and modifying that watch. Alex just figured out how to fix the band of my Polar V800 watch. The person on Polar chat tech support couldn't help me figure it out. But, Alex figured out that the metal piece on the watch that looked like the band attachment had actually ripped out of the old band and needed to be removed before a new band could be attached. He extracted the old metal without doing damage and attached the new band in ten minutes. And, it only cost $10. I'm very pleased. read more

I have been taking my watches to Alex's Watch repair for years and I will continue to do so. He provides excellent service at a fair price. I have tried other watch repair shops at the mall or elsewhere in the city however the service is never as good or timely. I drive the extra distance to bring my watches to be serviced by Alex. My one stellar example is when I took my Bulova watch to a mall repair shop to get a new watch band (wear and tear on the old band) the mall shop wanted to substitute a generic watch band. However when I took the same Bulova watch into Alex's shop he said that he could special order the same style watch band - Now I call that excellent customer service! read more
