Good friends + good food + good wine = Great experience

If you enjoy going to quaint and quiet mountain villas that offer spectacular views and great hospitality, then consider the 55-minute drive easy of Redding to Manton, CA. This is where John and Linda Alger decided to share their passion for his wine and generous hospitality. They have unique wine varietals that can not be found anywhere else because they grow their fruit on the premises, which gives it a distinctly local essence. They also serve up an occasional dinner party for members and special guests, which, when paired, becomes a delicious and delightful experience! My gratitude for John and Linda goes especially for hosting our private event, which John says they do not typically do. The atmosphere was perfectly relaxed (after a long and stressful week, this was such a welcomed place to walk into), and their sweet and generous disposition complimented their stellar wine selection. Following a tasting and learning from John about each variety, we were served an excellent dinner prepared by their local chef (Lawrence?). We savored every morsel as much as every sip, and we all were so delighted that they agreed to have us there for this private occasion! In a world where connections and relationships have become strained and fragile by societal reformatting, the owners of Alger Vinyard and Wine here in Manton, CA, are "holding the line" and continue to give busy people exhausted from their daily routine an experience that will bring rest and relaxation in an environment that will infuse the heart and soul with comfort and peace. Thank you, Alger family, for providing this for our community.

I visited this charming vineyard while staying with friends in Redding. The drive out was scenic and enjoyable. Once I arrived I was greeted by one of the friendly owners, Linda. She was warm, welcoming, and such a joy to speak and visit with. The wines were flavorful and of high quality. It was interesting to learn about their property, wine production and community. I highly suggest a visit if you are in the area. Cheers!

They have many varietals and the quality is top notch for all, plus priced exceptionally well. A tasting is a remarkably inexpensive $10, comped if you buy a bottle. It's well worth the price. The property is owned and operated by a group of Trappist Cistercian monks. There's a lot of information to read about them and the history on placards on the property. The property is fascinating in itself and they also have a centuries old portion of a abbey from Spain reconstructed on the property. It was purchased by William Randolph Hearst and the stone blocks stored in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco for decades. They were donated to the monks here with the understanding it be recreated on the site. It has been, and magnificent. The wine tasting is very informative and the knowledgeable staff will walk through each selection. This may be a bit far afield but well worth the trip.

This one I've been wanting for visit for many years due to its ties to Sierra Nevada Brewing nearby and also the story of the abbey stores from Europe. Mix that with the original owners of the areas, murder, and ghost stories in Hawaii, it makes for a fascinating visit! I'll spare the long history to be enjoyed on your visit. This entire region is fruit orchards and beautiful fields. New Clairvaux sits as part of a vineyard that was much larger long ago. The current vineyard is easy to get to with clearly marked signs and plenty of parking. Inside the barn you'll find the wine shop and gift shops, which you can also do tours and tastings. It's also an event space. The monastery is nearby down a shaded path, but visiting is restricted. The church is also nearby, which incorporates stones from an ancient abbey in Europe that themselves took an amazing and long journey to and up here. The gardens and vines are worth walking through, it's a beautiful area. We all decided to do the basic tasting tour where they share the history and stories while you taste. If you're a wine or history buff, this one is worth visiting.

My wife ordered Prime Rib and I ordered their Rib-Eye Steak and a Caesar salad for us to share. The Caesar salad was absolutely delicious and so big we didn't finish it. The plan was that we would share our main course too. When they placed the plates on the table my jaw dropped. Not only because of the size of the portions, but because of the aroma of the food that had just been placed before us. I took a bite of my steak and couldn't believe my taste buds. (Actually, I am salivating right now as I write this.) I have written before about the various steak houses I have eaten at, some of which are quite famous. So when I say that is the best Rib Eye I have ever eaten, that's saying something. My wife said the same thing about here Prime Rib. Mine was so good I didn't want to share any more with her, but she kept asking so I gave here about five more bites. The Prime Rib was fabulous, but the Rib Eye was truly awesome. The accompanying white potatoes and carrot were just right The was excellent too. It was so good we bought two bottles to take home, which was not our original plan. While we were eating the chef visited our table to make sure everything met our expectations. We all raved about the food. When I asked where they got their beef I understood why it was so good. It is from cattle raised on their own ranch and is certified Organic, Prime Choice. I also learned that they do a Sunday Brunch where they offer an Eggs Benedict dish that includes beef medallions. Sounds yummy. Sorry about this, Jack's Grill, but this is now our #1 choice for steaks. I know we will go there for our anniversary and probably at least one of our birthdays each year. The tasting room looks like it will only seat about fourteen people inside. I am not sure what they do if more people show-up. Maybe they overflow them into the banquet building. If it's nice out, they have patio dinning too. In any even, I would definitely call first to let them know you are coming and about when you expect to arrive. Our meal, including a bottle of wine, came to $107, before tip. The service person was excellent so I tipped accordingly. I know this is a little wordy, but the food was that good. I planned to take some leftovers home, as did my wife. However, there weren't any. My wife always gets a doggy bag. Her plait was clean, as was mine. PS - We have eaten lunch twice and dinner three times since I wrote the original review, and it has been just as good each time. Wonderful food, wine and service/!!! (10/4/12)

Their wines were reasonably priced around $20. Also, we called the day before to see if they were open. Wine maker Ernie knows what he is doing, and the delightfully affable wine pourer Crystal provides the finishing touch for an enjoyable wine tasting experience. The Pinot Gris and Cab Sauv weren't ready on the day we tasted, so we'll be coming back soon! Tasting fee is $5, which is waived with a purchase of two very reasonably priced wines.
