Miles treated us like personal friends while he taught us all about winemaking and his journey. His wife made us a tasty charcuterie board as well. If you like delicious natural wines I highly recommend visiting Miles. I've never had a wine tasting that felt so personal and to be able to hang out with the original winemaker is quite awesome too. The historic Thompson House is the perfect backdrop for wine tasting. The thing I love most about MFC is that it doesn't feel like a wine bar. It's got wine and a bar... but it feels like you're hanging out at your trendy friend's house. There's a living room area with fireplace, a dining room, a front porch with a cafe table & chairs, and big front lawn with Adirondack chairs in pairs & quads. Truly a choose your own pleasure! We couldn't pass up the perfect late spring afternoon, so I sunk into a deep Adirondack chair and enjoyed my wine tasting al fresco. The neon sign in the front window is the cutest, and just added to the overall vibe. Chuck was so hospitable, and brought me each pour from his post behind the bar inside. He gave insight into each wine, and then disappeared so I could enjoy at my own pace. MFC is very dog friendly, inside too, but I can't think of anywhere I've been in recent memory that was more perfect than wine tasting here on the front lawn with my pup in my lap. This one I've been wanting for visit for many years due to its ties to Sierra Nevada Brewing nearby and also the story of the abbey stores from Europe. Mix that with the original owners of the areas, murder, and ghost stories in Hawaii, it makes for a fascinating visit! I'll spare the long history to be enjoyed on your visit. This entire region is fruit orchards and beautiful fields. New Clairvaux sits as part of a vineyard that was much larger long ago. The current vineyard is easy to get to with clearly marked signs and plenty of parking. Inside the barn you'll find the wine shop and gift shops, which you can also do tours and tastings. It's also an event space. The monastery is nearby down a shaded path, but visiting is restricted. The church is also nearby, which incorporates stones from an ancient abbey in Europe that themselves took an amazing and long journey to and up here. The gardens and vines are worth walking through, it's a beautiful area. We all decided to do the basic tasting tour where they share the history and stories while you taste. If you're a wine or history buff, this one is worth visiting.

We were staying in Garberville and wanted to taste some Humbolt County wines. We call Briceland Vineyards to see if we could taste that same day. Andrew the winemaker was working on a project but was kind enough to accomodate us at 4pm (just 2 hours after our call). We arrived a bit late and he was there to greet us with a smile. He invited us to taste on is patio in front of the winery. He brought out two cases so we could try a variety of wines to include: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, PET Nat Sparkling, Rose of Pinot, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a bonus wine of Arneis. Its rare that you sit down with a winemaker for over and hour and learn about winemaking. He really educated our group. His wife brought out a beautiful charcuterie board with cheeses, meats, nuts and fruit. I am a wine member at many wineries in other California regions and have never experienced such GOOD winetasting. On top of that every wine we tasted we liked which is also very rare. The Sauvignon Blanc was light and grassy. The two Chardonnays were unlike the heavy oak and butter types that are too big. His red wines were smooth and not too high in alcohol. We left with several cases of wine. I will definitely visit Andrew again when we visit Humboldt County. I highly recommend a visit to Briceland Winery in the heart of Redwood Country.
