We just visited Anselmo Vineyards last night and it was one of the best experiences at a restaurant we've had in a long time... It was a quiet night at the restaurant, which was fine for us. The service and food were great! The head chef, Vinny, came out and greeted us and helped us decide what to order for dinner. All four of us had something unique and we all loved the food. For dessert, the chef brought out the most delicious strawberries and cream and it was to die for! Hopefully, Chef Vinny will be there next time we go back. read more

We went into the tasting room and were seated near a wood stove that made it real cozy. Each couple ordered a bottle of their wine and then placed our dinner orders. My wife ordered Prime Rib and I ordered their Rib-Eye Steak and a Caesar salad for us to share. The Caesar salad was absolutely delicious and so big we didn't finish it. The plan was that we would share our main course too. When they placed the plates on the table my jaw dropped. Not only because of the size of the portions, but because of the aroma of the food that had just been placed before us. I took a bite of my steak and couldn't believe my taste buds. (Actually, I am salivating right now as I write this.) I have written before about the various steak houses I have eaten at, some of which are quite famous. So when I say that is the best Rib Eye I have ever eaten, that's saying something. My wife said the same thing about here Prime Rib. Mine was so good I didn't want to share any more with her, but she kept asking so I gave here about five more bites. The Prime Rib was fabulous, but the Rib Eye was truly awesome. The accompanying white potatoes and carrot were just right The was excellent too. It was so good we bought two bottles to take home, which was not our original plan. While we were eating the chef visited our table to make sure everything met our expectations. We all raved about the food. When I asked where they got their beef I understood why it was so good. It is from cattle raised on their own ranch and is certified Organic, Prime Choice. I also learned that they do a Sunday Brunch where they offer an Eggs Benedict dish that includes beef medallions. Sounds yummy. Sorry about this, Jack's Grill, but this is now our #1 choice for steaks. I know we will go there for our anniversary and probably at least one of our birthdays each year. The tasting room looks like it will only seat about fourteen people inside. I am not sure what they do if more people show-up. Maybe they overflow them into the banquet building. If it's nice out, they have patio dinning too. In any even, I would definitely call first to let them know you are coming and about when you expect to arrive. Our meal, including a bottle of wine, came to $107, before tip. The service person was excellent so I tipped accordingly. I know this is a little wordy, but the food was that good. I planned to take some leftovers home, as did my wife. However, there weren't any. My wife always gets a doggy bag. Her plait was clean, as was mine. If you've never been to Anselmo Vineyards you have to go! Last Friday night was the first time I've ever been there and I didn't want to leave. Our dinner was fantastic, not only in presentation, but in flavor. Word of caution: portions are HUGE. One of the salads can easily feed 4 people, so keep this in mind and don't order a salad per person. If you're a beef eater...you're going to be soooo happy! Again, giant chunks of meat, big enough to share. I had the vegetarian canneloni stuffed with greens, herbs, ricotta and 2 sauces (a creamy cheesy sauce and a sun-dried tomato sauce). We didn't have room for dessert, but I did get a look at them and they looked delicious and GIANT. One negative, and kind of a big one, we ordered a bottle of the 2007 merlot and it was delivered to the table already corked with no wine service whatsoever. I'm usually accustomed to a warm welcome or a hello, but your loud bark in your best woman-like voice was quite pleasant. When we compare ourselves to you, no matter how bad our day is, we just say to ourselves, imagine if we were Hilary- oh how quickly we feel better. I have waited a LONG, LONG time for a place like this in the Redding area. Living in the bay area for the past 13 years, trips to Redding can be depressingly lack luster in the dining and entertainment arena. I'm happy to announce that Redding is climbing the charts in the foodie department and it's largely due to a few newer spots like Anselmo. Let me begin by saying that the drive out to Anselmo and the ranch itself are gorgeous. It's a little slice of rural beauty and is very reminiscent of many wineries in Paso or parts of the Napa Valley. Even on a cold November day, the scenery was picturesque with fall leaves included. The tasting/dining room follows along with an upscale lodge look and definitely feels warm & inviting. Menus are simple and bound with brown, soft leather. They have a larger dining room for dinner that is just stunning. There are many details throughout the grounds that just scream, "someone cared!" They didn't go unnoticed by us. Service was above and beyond. Diane, our server was giving us a tour at the end of our meal and felt more like a friend rather than an employee of the winery. John, the head chef, came and spoke with my mom & I on several occasions and was quick to help us with recommendations. So nice and down to earth and undoubtedly knows his stuff. TASTNG: Upon first glance I thought, "$20 per person for a wine tasting? Who do you think you are, Silver Oak?" After getting the tasting, it's TOTALLY worth it. You essentially get 4 generous pours that are really 4 small glasses of wine and an appetizer plate of cheese (that's addictive so watch out), crackers, pistachios, olive tapenade, dried apricots & cranberries....delish. Oh, and most importantly, the wine is great. Loved the Merlot which is odd since I am not a fan of Merlot usually. Purchased 4 bottles and promptly became a wine club member. FOOD: YUMMY! My mom had the Lasagna and I had the Gnocchi. Both were fantastic and very thoughtful. Because it was mom's birthday, the chef brought us out some Creme Brulee for dessert and you didn't hear any complaints from us. We had a very nice afternoon at Anselmo and are already making a reservation for brunch over Christmas weekend. I'm so disappointed to be writing this review. This used to be one of my very favorite places in Northern California. I was sad to see the change in ownership mainly because I know that no matter what the situation, it comes with change and to me Reverge had the restaurant and fine dinning experience nailed. I was actually nervous to see what had become of the place when we went for dinner last week. That turned to disappointment as soon we pulled in. The grounds look horrible! The beautiful gardens are gone and the landscaped grounds are an embarrassment from what it once was. We sat on the patio, where the tables were dirty the patio was filthy with fig staines all over the place attracting flies. The wine glasses and water glasses were all in polished and some were just plain dirty. When the menus arrived I was shocked. The dinner came in a wine menu which was beautiful until you opened it up and realized that they turned this into a Denny's like menu, which included the brunch, lunch, dinner, and tapas menu. All about half a page long on tacky paper and stuffed in a wine menu. Front of the house service was nonexistent. We checked in with the hostess and were walked out to the patio where we were shown where we could not sit and told to seat ourselves. A server came by and hollered across the patio to the other server to decided who was going to be taking care of our table. When that was decided we got our dirty water glasses and some wine. The hostess (might have been the restaurant manager as she was wearing a blazer and doing a lot of table touching) came by and I motioned to her because I wanted to ask for some ice for our water. I was cut short and asked rudely......very rudely if there was a problem. Three glasses of ice arrived and we were told to just dump it into our other melted ice water. By this time my expectations for dinner were shot, and rightfully so. Appetizer of crab cakes were disgusting and the sauces and presentation were embarrassing. The concept of the salad was good but the execution fell horribly short, portion sizes were all of the place and again presentation was sad. Dinner came and the flavor of the food was good and edible but far from fine dinning. Sadly there is a huge lack of experience on all levels here. This is a review about Hilary - The restaurant manager . When friends and I called to make a reservation , Hilary made it a breeze. She said she would personally greet us when we arrived . Provided we show up drunk and with our own beer to drink . So we obliged. Hilary really went out if her way to pleas us . She even allowed us to take our 1yr old pitbulls for a run around the restaurant and winery . I have never seen a restaurant manager so happy ! She truly loves to please . I'm not one to slander businesses or be negative towards others, but today's incident at Anselmo Vinyards has just down right pissed me off. The hostess rudely greeted us with a "let me check if there's room," not a "hello." She disappeared and returned briefly to say "we are booked all day." No apologies, just snooty teenage attitude as fake as her painted on eyebrows. Strangely, however, only a third of the tables were occupied... Now, upon leaving I discovered that there is a "no visible tattoo" policy. Instead of embarrassing future patrons and potential word-of-mouth recommendations, maybe Anselmo should post such "codes." The owners must not realize where they are located and who thier audience is going to be... It's Shingletown, not Napa. I work very hard for my money as a health care professional and it has no less monetary value than any one who is non-tattooed. I am intelligent, cultured, peaceful, and love wine as much as the next vineyard seeking guest. I will NOT be returning, I am sure I can concoct a better plate of food than their kitchen anyway and their wine is probably as bitter as their service. read more

We visited Anselmo on Friday 4/7/16 for lunch. First let me explain how this place USED to be. When you pulled up to the Anselmo property you were greeted by horses, cows, chickens, even sweet little lambs roaming freely through fields & it felt so warm and welcoming. The owners Reverge & Chicken were always there to greet you with a smile and some wild story that started the experience off with a laugh. The food was 5 star, the service was impeccable and the grounds were an experience of their own, we would spend every weekend up there taking it all in.... It was so wonderful. Now to Friday, 4/7/16. I brought my boyfriend and my daughter to the Anselmo property for lunch. I wanted them to experience everything I had experienced in the past. Although I knew the property was now under new ownership, I still had high hopes. The only reason I even gave two stars is because the chef came out to speak to us and was very nice. His name was Vinny of the Wiseguy Kitchen TV show. He made an outstanding eggplant parmesan and was very friendly. Clearly a great Italian chef. So to him, I say thank you! Some of the other problems we had during our lunch visit: Pulled up to the property, closed sign was displayed. Plants overgrown, no landscape maintenance, everything locked down, almost looked abandoned. Lots of bugs. Got seated at a table... asked for the soup of the day, no soup. Ordered the grilled cheese sandwich, no cheese available. Served a glass of wine, bug crawling around in the glass. Ordered another glass (without a bug), the 2010 Majorette (red wine), and saw an extreme amount of sediment at the bottom of the glass. The group sitting next to us on the outdoor patio brought their dog. The dog made noises and barked the entire meal. Why was this allowed? Service was soooooo slow, even to get a refill on water, yet the place was empty. We saw empty fields, no grapes, nothing much to see anymore. This is a funny place. Food is off the hook good, steak you can cut with a fork, Roquefort dressing that is to die for, and all for a decent price. You get what you paid for and then some. Cost is less than quality!!! Now the funny part. The wine is horrible. As long as you do not get his wine you are in great shape, but as soon as you try one of his; you want to scrape off you taste buds with sandpaper. Hmmm where to begin. Went with some friends for a birthday party. Got there and was amazed by how beautiful the grounds were. They definitely put a lot of thought and time into the setting. You can tell that they have a passion for landscaping and having a vineyard. That being said. I wish there was a bit more passion put into the food and service. Now, I get that it is supposedly more upscale restaurant but I really like knowing what I am paying for a plate of food. I don't mind dropping 30-40 dollars on a well made meal. What I bought was steak oscar. Which should be a steak cooked to order with crab and a ridiculously rich seafood sauce on top. It should be buttery, tender, and mouthwateringly grand. It was none of these things sadly. The steak was burnt on one side, over cooked throughout (Medium rare is not a hard task) the seafood was overcooked and rubbery, and the tragedy of it all (exaggeration much) was that the sauce was bland. The service was mediocre, our waitress didn't know much about the dishes, couldn't tell us the prices of the special, and while she was nice she simply wasn't informed on anything. Overall not a great experience. Probably will never go back unless my wife really wants to sit on a patio and drink wine. read more

Located on the 2250+ acre Seven Hills ranch covered with sprawling pastures, perennial creeks, waterfalls, and some excellent views of Mt. Shasta. The ranch has been around since 1853, though the current owner Reverge Anselmo acquired the property in 2005. The staff filled us in with many great stories about the owner which we briefly met as he ate his dinner on the patio, but we found out it was his day off and he was disengaged when we tried to engage in conversation. The friend that brought us here really talked the owner up from his last visit, but it wasn't the case for us during this visit. I learned the owner has significant wealth, has multiple vineyards in other parts of the country and possibly world, flies helicopters, has chased away drug dealers found growing on the ranch and is even building a small private church on the property.......all of which reminds me of wealth in Europe not the United States. The winery/ranch hosts a range of special events ranging from seasonal celebrations and live music to anniversaries and weddings. In a word, this is not just a winery/ranch, but a destination. They produce several wines and I tried all of them. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Majorette (their signature red wine blend), and St. Pe de Bigorre which is their white wine blend. In addition, they have a restaurant on the premises which gathers food within six miles for a true pasture to plate experience. Add in appetizers and desserts and this truly adds to the overall experience should you decide to visit. read more

We went for the flight and cheese platter. We didn't order any other food, which seems to be a main complaint from a lot of reviewers... We got hefty portions of wine and they brought us extra cheese/crackers. They didn't have many wines to choose from. The cheese platter was very basic but it was free so what can you say. You get a $10 discount on wines if you buy a bottle with your tasting- so we bought a bottle of the white and the bubbly. They gave us a cold bottle or bubbly to take home, which was disappointing because you can't store bottle that are already chilled and they didn't even ask what I wanted. Had to go back to the bar and ask for an unchilled bottle. They should know better. There's also a dress code which I think is a little presumptuous for a place in this area... To start things off on a pleasant note, we would like to say that the setting is absolutely gorgeous. The wait-staff and chef were pleasant, and the food was delicious. While the service was somewhat slow, the surroundings were so beautiful, that we did not mind waiting. We were celebrating our anniversary, and a framed and jeweled little sign reading "Happy Anniversary" awaited us at our table on the patio, which was a very nice touch! When we first sat down, a very boisterous woman was talking at a table near ours. After a few minutes, we wondered whether we should move inside, to escape the escalating noise level. As the evening drew on, it became evident, that this woman had drank more than her fair share of wine, and that she was the wife of the owner, who was also at the table from time to time. To make a long story shorter, it turns out that in addition to the overbearing yet friendly wife... the owner was a pompous prig, who repeatedly insulted guests (including me, when my husband lef the table briefly), stood on the patio smoking his cheap Winston's, blowing his smoke in our faces, and sharing his rude opinions of one of the menu items they were serving (which apparently was not up to his standard, and he compared to California Pizza Kitchen cuisine). As I stated originally, the setting and the food were superb. If you can stomach having to deal with the nauseatingly condescending owner, it may be worth your while. read more

Came here for my wife and my 2nd year anniversary. We showed up around 3 and enjoyed their wine "flight" taster. After that we took a peaceful and beautiful stroll through the vineyard and up to a pond next to an old chapel. We brought some snacks along with us so we had a picnic and read a novel together. From there we headed back down to the restaurant for our dinner reservation. We both had a fantastic dinner and desert. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, while the food, wine, and atmosphere were terrific. read more

Check out pizza night on Thursday's. Amazing pizza but kind of weird that they pre-make them all so you can't customize your pie. Also be aware that on pizza night they don't offer very many other options (reduced menu) so don't bring your gf friend here on Thursdays unless you just want to be really mean. On non pizza night you must try the burger. One of my favorite ever! Don't mess it up with too many toppings. Keep it simple. You are going to want to taste this meat that is literally raised on site! You can see the cows grazing from your table. Doesn't get any fresher than that! read more

Food was good. Great atmosphere. A friend of mine, her daughter and I went for lunch. I had never been there before. They had. They loved it under the old ownership. The new owners do not value taking care of the grounds and the garden. It's sad really because the landscape is beautiful. There were weeds everywhere and everything was untouched. They have only owned it for about a month and that is about how long it looks like the place was cared for. The lady that sat us was nice. She ended up being our server and admitted she normally doesn't serve. She could not answer simple questions about the food. I have issues with food so I was very careful to order a selection that involved no meat, sugar or dairy. To my surprise, my meal came wrapped in bacon and with feta cheese sprinkled on top. The menu didn't mention bacon or cheese so I was shocked. They graciously took it back and recooked it but I had to sit there and watch my friends eat for another 15-20 minutes while I awaited my food. It would have been nice if they had that listed on the menu so I could have asked them to omit those items or order something else. I ordered the mango shrimp salad. It was yummy once it got there. I would have liked a little more spice but it was good. My friends ordered eggplant Parmesan and pasta salad with chicken. I tasted the eggplant dish. It was yummy as well. All of our food came with garlic bread which was also good. Mine was cold by the time my meal came back out. I was told the pasta dish was good too. The outdoor patio was lovely a midst a huge fig tree. We could not resist but to ask permission to pick a few figs while we waited for our order. They said it was okay so we had a bit of an adventure while we waited. It was lovely. The outdoor furniture, although pretty, was VERY HEAVY and awkward. The chairs seemed to weigh 50 lbs. a piece. I may be exaggerating but not by much, they were very heavy! The chairs were really hard to sit on. I have had 2 spinal fusions so it was difficult to be on something so hard for that long. There was a kitty running around, so I had to make sure to visit with their mascot before dinner. We shared a dessert 3 ways and it was yummy as well. We got the flourless chocolate cake. It was a tiny piece and came with a very small scoop of ice cream. I think the portion could have been a bit bigger for the price. None of us had leftovers. It was enough food but I am used to having some to take home for later. The The chairs were really hard to sit on. I have had 2 spinal fusions so it was difficult to be on something so hard for that long. The presentation was nice on all the dishes. The ambiance was amazing on the patio. When our server asked if we would like desserts we asked what they were and she said she didn't know. She came back with them written on scratch paper. She said they don't have menus printed up with the desserts listed. She seemed a but frustrated with the new owners. She said that the old owner looked at the place as his passion. The new owner looks at is as an investment so the excellence has been lost. After reading the reviews online, I would have to assume she is right. My friend took her family out there to dinner 2 nights after we were there and she was celebrating her birthday. She said the service was horrible...everything they ordered was already sold out. They ordered their second and third choices and the fish came out undercooked and the rice was not even warm. She said the whole night was a huge disappointment. They ordered wine and the server just came and sat it on the table. Did not offer to pour their wine at all. Not sure any of us will go out there again. It was worth a try but for that much money I expected to be wooed. The place has so much potential. It would be nice to bring the passion back that the previous owner had for the place. One last note...one of their cars had the tire removed and it was sitting on a jack right in front of where you enter. That seemed a bit tacky considering they won't even allow motorcycles on the property. That is offensive to me because there are a lot of us that ride motorcycles. I would be upset if I drove out there to find out I wasn't welcome because of what I drive. The banquet room was open and looked like it is not being cleaned or kept up either. It would be a great place for an event if it were clean, kept up and you could trust the way the food is prepared. The restrooms were clean too. That is important to me. The pond was filled with pond scum and the fountain was not working. It looked really bad. I hope this helps. I think you also have to have a reservation. I'm sad to have to give this place only 3 stars. It really does have so much potential! But sadly our experience wasn't the greatest. First of all, out of our group of 8 adults for Sunday Brunch, 5 of us ordered the same bruschetta but they did not have avocados to put the meal together. We chose to wait while someone ran to the store to buy avocados. Not the best impression. Once we did receive our meals we all agreed it was delicious! Secondly, our waiter, although friendly, messed up continually. He never brought my mimosa refill for the bottomless mimosa that I paid for even though I ask several times. He never brought my sons milk then when asked said they don't serve milk. He put in one of the orders wrong and that person in our party didn't get his food until the rest of us were ready to leave. Those are just to name a few mistakes. It just put a sour taste in my mouth when you pay more for a meal and setting and the service is that bad. read more

First time here since change of ownership. I looked at the reviews before we came and most were not good since the ownership change but my wife still wanted to go for lunch. We ordered the burger and OMG it was so delicious. Service was great too. We sat out on the patio since it was a beautiful day and the environment was perfect. We didn't experience any of the stuff the bad reviews were complaining about. Either those were just grouchy people or the new ownership has righted the ship. My wife ordered the creme brele for dessert. The waitress thought it took too long for the chef to prepare it so she comped the dessert! We didn't feel like it was taking a long time but nice of them to do that. TL;DR: Great food, great service, great vibe. The lunch might be the reason I get some action tonight ;) read more

We were "recently" married here - in June 2014 - so this review is quite overdue. After a few initial hiccups with staff here (who, as I understand it, have caused many hiccups before ours and are no longer with the business), we couldn't have asked for a better wedding planner and representative than Whitney. From start to finish, she helped us make our special day fantastic - and even honored some commitments made to us by former employees there, even if they were no longer part of their wedding offerings. Anselmo is not only a beautiful venue, but their wine and food are also top notch - and our guests couldn't have been more pleased. We couldn't recommend Whitney or Anselmo Vineyards more highly - if you're considering tying the knot in the North State, Anselmo should be top of your list. This is my first trip back to Anselmo since it re-opened. I must say, I'm quite glad that the returning staff is competent and professional (not to mention, they all look like models!). Everyone that helped our table last Friday night was incredibly kind and warm (a welcome change from that laughable joke of a previous manager/person, Hillary!). From the hostess that welcomed us so graciously, to our server, to the new manager, Paige-- everyone on this staff definitely gets my approval. They know how to create amazing experiences for people! The food was the same as before-- what I expect when I come to a destination spot in Shasta County. I usually go to Anselmo more for the atmosphere and the dining experience, not the quality of food (which, in my opinion, isn't that great of cuisine as it's just drowning in butter & cream-- though, arguably, it is the best food around Redding). Our experience coming here Friday night was tremendously let down by the new owner and his guests/friends at his table. Coming here on a date, I expected Anselmo to have great ambiance, great background music, professional people-- what one would expect with a solid restaurant experience. The new owner, however, just encouraged his newfound lady friend (mistress?) to keep drinking Anselmo wine probably to keep her to conitnue making out with him-- yes, kissing him and giving him his own under-the-table personal experience right in the middle of our dinner. It was embarrassing, and totally unprofessional. I'm not sure what this new owner is doing or attempting to do, but he's definitely not creating any kind of a "fine dining" experience for anyone in Shasta County. I felt horrible for the servers and the rest of the diners that night. The owner just made things downright awkward for everyone by allowing that to continue. No one knew what to do when this lady started screaming and stumbling about in such a small restaurant. It was mortifying. "I LOVE YOU BABY" along with constant requests about bedrooms and such didn't leave much to the imagination about the future of their night. Absolutely unnecessary. Again-- the staff is wonderful, the food is okay, the atmosphere is typically incredible, but I would be concerned with taking anyone there and expecting a professional dining experience if that new owner and his mistress is around! read more

Okay, so if you live in Redding.... or if you are visiting in the Redding area..... eating at Anselmo Vineyards is a MUST!! The new chef & the menu, as well as the management is incredible!!! My husband & I celebrated New Years eve here tonight; and what a pleasant choice! Our first time at Anselmo was over 2 years ago under the old ownership, this time with new ownership. Both times were enjoyable and memorable. The restaurant is on hundreds of acres and a large vineyard; all the wines served inside are made on the premises, and are superior. We had wine, appetizers, mains, dessert and coffee and spent $120, it felt very worth it. My husband had the ribeye and I had the duck, generous portions of meat and well seasoned. We spent 2.5 hours there and felt well taken care of. One of the most pleasant parts of the evening was Karen, the manager. She seated us, served us and took good care of us the entire time we were there. They were also short one chef that evening, but everything came out in reasonable time. Overall i recommend a trip here, expect a bit of a drive and to pay more than some other places for the quality food, excellent wine and beautiful property. read more

Went here for dinner for the first time tonight. Although I was expecting to be disappointed because of some of the negative reviews, the assumption that it would be overpriced, and the fact that it's a bit of a drive outside of Redding, my overall experience was actually quite good. I went out with a few friends for my best friend's birthday, and the food was actually very good. I got the Beef brisket and felt like $25 was actually quite fair for what turned out to be a delicious dish. My girlfriend got the beef stroganoff and was very pleased with it until she suddenly noticed a rather long hair mixed in with the pasta. I wasn't quite sure how the management would react due to some of the negative things people have had to say on here about issues with their food, but in this instance the staff was extremely apologetic and not only comped my girlfriend's meal but also offered her free champagne and dessert. Sure, nobody enjoys finding a hair in his/her food, but all things considered I felt like the staff handled it very well. I would definitely recommend it again. Sure it's a bit of a drive and sure it's on the higher end of what you'd typically pay for a nice meal in Redding, but the taste, presentation, and scenery is pretty much unbeatable. read more

My husband and I went on a Friday evening at 6 PM, and the restaurant was quiet and the service was incredible. We ordered the antipasto for two and also two main dishes for ourselves and the portions were out of this world! Our bill was not expensive and like I previously said, our waitress was so attentive and so kind. Glad the new chef is in charge and will definitely be going back! read more

Had dinner at Anselmo's last Friday night. Beautiful setting on the patio. I was blown away at our arrival by seeing the former long time Manager of Cattlemens running the place. He always did an amazing job there. He greeted us warmly and escorted us to our table. Service was professional and relaxing, they had a music group playing background dinner music, very nice touch. I believe the food is some of the finest in Shasta County. Fresh and large portions. I had the Chicken Marsala and my husband enjoyed the Scallops. Oh My! Delicious! It paired wonderfully with their white wine, a Viogner. Our server, Chris, was attentive and had a great personality, knew the wine and was very descriptive in suggestions. I have heard odd stories about the place, however, we completely enjoyed our evening, we never felt rushed, the food was amazing and the view and atmosphere can't be beat. With the addition of Mr. Cook running the show, I expect Anselmo to become even better. We are looking forward to an after church brunch next week read more

07/02/2016 After reading the various reviews about Anselmo's, the six of us (three couples) decided to book a lunch reservation for 12:30 pm and enjoy a wonderful afternoon. Upon arriving at the restaurant on time, they seated us at a table reserved for a party of twelve. We thought that was a bit strange. Then as you might have guessed, when the party of twelve arrived the staff needed to assemble a new area for them. This effort took the focus from our group and as a result, we actually needed to fetch our own napkins and silverware. While receiving the menus the waitress then informed the six of us that lunch would not be served, but that only dinner would be available. We were shocked because it was only 12:45 pm and no one in our group had ever been to a restaurant that had pulled a switch like this. Of course, the dinner prices were twice the lunch prices and the selection was surprisingly limited. However, we choose to proceed anyway. One of us ordered a glass of wine and the price was about fifteen dollars. The glass of wine arrived at our table under poured and the quality was pretty average for the region. After ordering dinner, we patiently waited while each meal arrived from the kitchen, slowly, one at a time. This staggered delivery system allowed our food to get cold while we waited for all of our orders to be completed. Midway through our dinner, we noticed that no one was serving our table and we could not locate our waitress. As a result, no one refilled our water or ice tea or even asked: "how are things going?". In addition, we were thinking that it would have been appropriate to have some bread to accompany our meals. About this time the head chief, Vincent, decided to drop by to say "Hello". He was a nice fellow so we mentioned some of our issues to him. He in turn, displayed his frustration with the staff and stated how difficult it was to find good help. Also, that bread was supposed to be included in the meal, but that the staff had simply forgotten to bring it. As our experience came to a close, I remember thinking, it would be nice to order a cup of coffee or perhaps dessert. But as before, the staff was difficult to locate. Finally, we were presented with our checks and the total on each ironically included a twenty percent TIP for the staff. Unbelievable. So, how would I rate our experience? Well, let us be objective here: First of all, Anselmo's is attempting to position and maintain themselves as an upper-crust establishment. But the service at the Olive Garden or Denny's far exceeds what we experienced. Will we be back? Of course not. Even the IRS treats their customers better. We sincerely hope that Anselmo's management will identify its many shortcomings (that were not present with the original owners) and replace some of it's horribly inept and under-trained staff. read more

We had experienced wine tasting at Anselmo a couple of months back. it was awesome. $20 for 4 very generous "tastes" and a plate of unique appetizers. We realized the Anselmo now serves lunch and dinner on the weekends. Couldn't wait to go back. After wine tasting, each purchased 2 bottles of wine for over $30 a bottle because we were impressed with the "package"... atmosphere, quality of wine and excellent service. Yesterday we made reservations for 7pm for 4 people for dinner. (It is about a 25 minute drive from Redding) We were seated in a booth in the "winery" not in the tasting room, but the atmosphere was very nice. Could have been a bit warmer as they left the large door open to the outside air and it is still a bit chilly in Shingletown. Wine was very good even though we ordered the Majorette ( a blend) we were brought Merlot.... and didn't realize it till we were looking at the label later.....When our friend (who doesn't drink alcohol) asked for an O"Doules, we were told "we only serve wine and water". I had an inkling they might not have O'Doules so brought one in the car, but were told we couldn't bring it in.... OK... About 30 minutes after we were seated we were asked what we wanted to order. Medium-well Prime Rib was the first choice for 2 members of our party but we were told they were out of prime rib.... and then informed that the chef will not prepare meat any more cooked than medium, even if a patron chooses it more well done than medium. OK..... Two of us ordered salads (Cesaer and Tuscan Salads) and they were both very good, huge portions. ($12 each)... the menu stated "no splits and no substitutions" so we were afraid to ask to split a salad, something we like to do when we are expecting a great meal.... so we don't "spoil our appetite". After our meal and not being able to finish the entree, the server did tell us we could have asked for "an extra plate" so we could share a salad.... OK..... When one member in our party asked for his hamburger without the sauce, we were reminded "no substitutions"... so he agreed to have the sauce on the side, knowing he did not want the sauce. ....OK...... His hamburger arrived without the Jarlsburg cheese as it was described in the menu (we wondered about, "no substitutions" so he sent it back to have the cheese added. I ordered the shrimp scampi, very generous portions, but after eating most of my huge salad I couldn't finish it. The scampi and pasta, although very good, was lukewarm when it arrived at the table. 2 in our party ordered the brisket that they said was so-so. They both wanted beef but being told we couldn't request any beef more well done than medium they had no choice but to order the brisket..... no more than pot roast in our opinion. During dinner, a nice lady very briefly checked with us to see how our meal was.... she immediately went to chat with the table behind us. It appeared she knew them. As I understand it, the nice lady was the owner.... she was apparently in a "party mood" because twice she turned the volume on the music to an uncomfortable level. Our server managed to get it turned down both times. We did not say anything about the loud music...although it was loud enough to make it difficult to talk with our friends sitting in the same booth. We ordered the chocolate cake for dessert (to share)... apparently sharing dessert is acceptable as they brought us 4 forks. Our server never offered coffee (don't forget they only serve water and wine). Tab for dinner for 4 was $194.00 before tip. We never felt like we were appreciated for our business but instead felt like Anselmo was doing us a favor by "allowing" us to dine there. I would like to add that none in our party questioned any of the policies... we were exceedingly pleasant during the entire ordeal, in fact we talked about how getting upset never helps the situation. We came to the realization Anselmo isn't our "cup of tea" or "glass of wine" or "goblet of water". We are so disappointed in this experience. Unfortunately we doubt we will be back. Had low expectations but they should've been lower. Service was terrible and customer service was worse. The gals behind the bar acted like we were bothering them when we asked for a drink. There were miscommunications with the food order for the large party (a special birthday event) and they were unwilling to make it right. Also $20 for wine tasting? Pretty sure antipasta or some small amount of food was supposed to come with it, but our table never received it. It's a beautiful place with a lot of potential, but the service needs some work. read more

We got dressed up and drove 35min only to be sent away because we didn't have reservations. There is no indication on the website saying reservations are required. I don't know of any other place I've been to where they have turned away paying customers, not because of an event or because it was busy or full, but because they were low on pizza dough. Offer your customers something else to eat or politely invite them to enjoy the views and please come back again. You never say they are not welcome. We will not be returning to this poorly managed restaurant. read more

We had our company celebration here and they accommodated us with no problems. The staff was so friendly and gracious along with very knowledgeable about the wine menu and entrée menu as well. The food was spectacular, huge portions and perfectly cooked steaks. Dessert was from another world, absolutely Devine. The icing on the whole experience for our group was Winston the Cat. He would sneak in the dining room with us and we had him so spoiled by the time we left. If we could have we would of made him our "office cat". I was not impressed. A party of six middle aged adults with high expectation not met. They sat us at a table which was directly at the entrance which appeared and felt like the waiting area. Every customer exited past our table. Staff in the back dropped trays and glasses 3 times while we're eating. We had mentioned on phone that one of our wives was celebrating her 50th Birthday and they gave the impression that they would do a little something for her. We'll zip, nada! The positive points...amazing location, quite tranquil. Food is good, but quality can vary. The best items are probably the beef (local, on ranch) and shrimp. Negatives (and we've been there about 5 or 6 times but have decided the negatives just outweigh the positives). The wine list. Terrible, they only serve their own wine. They used to have a Zin from the valley that was better, but no longer provide that option. The cheese plate...OMG, how difficult can a cheese plate be? Put good quality cheese on a plate with dried canberries and walnuts accompanied by top notch crackers and Voila. This cheese plate was like something my mother would serve in the 50s/60s. Velvetta with Ritz. Should be an embarrassment for people trying so hard for quality. The major negatives are the owners..who you will likely encounter while dining. Radical conservatives. If you are in business, remember your customers are key. There are many of us in the "north state" who are "screaming liberals" and proud of it. And, we enjoy going to nice establishments without having the owners, quite sloshed at the end of an evening, imposing their opinions on us. Looking forward to View 202 being successful. Or maybe the tiff with the county will be so overbearing these folks will leave and someone reasonable will take over this ideal location. read more

My husband and I had been given a gift card for Anselmo and finally had the time to use it. We LOVED every minute of our experience. From the hostess to our amazing waiter (who had just returned from a restaurant tour in Europe) to our food. The portions are very generous and scallops, salad and steaks were incredible! I hope this place succeeds because Shasta County needs a beautiful and delicious dining experience like this! Thank you. Especially to our waiter- simply the best in every way. read more
