I went to Ali Tailoring recently to drop off some clothes for dry cleaning and tailoring after a big trip abroad. One of the clothes I brought for dry cleaning was my cherished Madewell blazer that I got on sale a couple of years ago, which fit me like the perfect pair of gloves. Most importantly, I cherished that blazer because it's especially hard to find clothes that fit well for petite women; it was a beautiful, Italian cropped gray blazer with delicate blue stitching in a petite size 0. I dropped off my clothes on a Saturday afternoon, and thought all was well, and I was pleased with the cheap prices. I went back to the store the following Saturday to pick up my clothes, only to notice that something was missing, but I was hasty that day since I had to rush to a scheduled appointment right afterwards. I looked up at the lady and asked her if she had everything, and in a deceivingly sweet tone, she said, "Yep. This is everything". (My mistake in trusting her.) I left hoping to catch the next train to my appointment. When I got home later that day, I realized, in shock, that my blazer was not there. I called her back immediately and asked about the blazer, and she said, "There's nothing like that here". Lie. And I panicked. I sorted through the pile of clothes I picked up more than three times, and all my laundry. I even deep-cleaned my entire closet and apartment searching for the blazer. It was gone. I called her back the next day and insisted that she check again because it was nowhere to be found. It's not like it grew a pair of legs and disappeared on its own. She said again that it wasn't at the shop. Now, there's nothing I can do except warn people about this horrible experience. I wish I had read previous Yelp reviews about her losing other people's clothes. There are a few possible scenarios that could explain what happened. 1) She did a horrible job with my blazer and was too embarrassed to tell me. 2) She lost it or gave it away as a donation to a thrift shop by accident. 3) She decided to keep it for herself or give it to a family member since she and I are about the same size. What a shame. And just when I thought I had found a good tailor without the high price tag. read more

I had a dress shortened by 10 inches because I recently injured my ankle and it would've been a trip hazard if I wore it as is. The tailor was able to shorten it to the proper length without needing to see me wear it. I am attaching a before and after of the length. It was good work, though I feel like $45 for this was very overpriced. read more

The tailor doesn't quite understand customer service. She never smiles or says any pleasantries.. She did some hemming for me, very simple work. One of them she did it while I waited, but she failed to mention it's extra to get it done on the spot. Any price hikes at any businesses should be brought up prior to performing that service. I think that's the norm. So that was a red flag. I don't think I'd come here again unless needed to. read more

The same two red dresses have been on display in the windows at least since 2006. Either way, I have a couple of pairs of pants hemmed here. My jeans were done fine with an original hem, but the fabric overlaps on the inside- not exactly seamless work. But, Ali's open late-ish, and within walking distance, and very accommodating to get my stuff done when I want it. Prices are reasonable. read more

This woman is literally a miracle worker. I got fitted for a bridesmaid dress back in 2019 and then Covid hit.Needless to say the dress did not fit at all anymore. with a weeks time notice she was able to take the dress out so that it could fit and get it back to me in time for the wedding. She is super sweet and the prices are fair. The shop is small and humble, but she gets the job done!!! I would 100% recommend anyone going to her. I went here recently to get a bridesmaids dress altered that I'd been putting off for quite some time. I only picked this place because it's very close to me and they have Saturday hours. The shop is teeny tiny and the seamstress took me right away into the back room which serves as a babysitting venue for her kids as well as a dressing room with a curtain. Her kids were watching a movie [from what I gathered, it starred Christopher Walken and he kept talking to/about a princess--Google search tells me it's "Puss in Boots"??] and making noises into a fan and giggling about it. I guess the movies wasn't that good, because the fan seemed more interesting. Krazy kids. She quickly pinned and chalked my dress to my desire and told me it would be ready in a week. A week??? Everyone else's seamstress said it would take them 2-3 weeks! Suckers! I got my dress back, sure enough, after one week. Tried it on and it looked great. Seams looked strong. Fit and length were perfect. This time her kids were singing some Kidz Bop songs and not giggling. It was a very serious day. I'm planning on bringing other clothes that are ripped and I had stuffed in a Hefty bag because I don't know how to fix them or I didn't notice they were ripped. I guess that serves me well for buying stuff on eBay. So now, I'm the best bridesmaid because I beat everyone. Now all I have to do is get 800 pictures taken of me, stand still on a stage for 20 minutes, and get loaded off the open bar! ACES! read more

So from laziness combined with a baseless fear that getting my jeans hemmed would leave them too short or looking odd, I've been walking around constantly pulling them up or walking on the last 2 inches. I finally decided to do something about it, and Ali tailoring is ridiculously close to my house. The seamstress was very nice and efficient. I brought the jeans in on a Monday and picked them up Wednesday morning. They fit perfectly now and the hem job was $9. I'll definitely keep them in mind for more serious tailoring jobs as well. read more

Don't be fooled by the looks of this place. This woman knows how to take any article of clothing, whether it be a dress or pants or skirt, and make it fit like a glove. You also pay in advance so you're never surprised by the price after the work is done. read more

This is where I take all of our dry cleaning and it gets the job done. I had my wedding dress cleaned here twice (yes, I had to wear it twice to two different receptions) and the results were quite impressive both times. I was hard on my dress. There were grass and soil stains from our outdoors photoshoot and a solid layer of dust from all the dancing we did. I was embarrassed and hesitant about bringing my dress here. 1. It was embarassing how dirty I got it, considering I wore it for one night and 2. everyone tells you have to pay an arm and leg for dry cleaning your wedding dress. They charged me a reasonable amount, about $170. Significantly cheaper than most places. It was returned to me in pristine condition, just like when I first got it. The second time, I had a fussy reception back in asia, where they needed to put foundation all over me. Yes, all over me. This left huge makeup stains around the edges, not to mention the tiny specks. Wham- I get the dress back and it's completely spotless once again. Granted, I didn't ask for the box/perservation treatment, but I mean- come on, let's be real. That's just a waste of money. read more

I have taken clothing into Yung that I thought were lost causes, and she's somehow tailored them to perfection. Despite some super tight timelines (sorry, Yung :)), she's been so incredibly reliable. I would trust her with any item and know that she consistently gives fair prices. Her customer service is spot-on and on top of that, she really loves what she does and takes pride in her work. She recently stayed late to tailor a dress for me and even though it was well past closing time when I picked it up, she had me try it on because she wanted to see her work in action - we were both all smiles. This place is very close to where I live, so I thought I would try it. I had an urgent need for dress pants for work, and took two in for hemming. No issues with the overall lengths but when you look at the stitches, they are definitely not experienced careful tailors. One of the pants had a cuff, which had to be removed to increase the length, and there was a line remaining from where the cuff had been, as well as lots of little bits of thread that could have easily been cleaned up before returning to me. They are very inexpensive ( $10/pant ) and completed the work in 3 days (and are flexible around your schdule), but overall the worksmanship is pretty poor. I will still consider them for future hemming needs, but they are definitely not a place to take something you really care about. read more

Another great family owned and run business in Cambridge :) Run by a friendly couple, their kids are often in the back. I already have a dry cleaner in the area, although I have used Ali's for dry cleaning a few times, but I come here for tailoring. It's hard to find good quality tailor services these days. The lady who works here had done the alterations on all my pants, dresses, so naturally I had her also do my wedding gown. I had to lose weight to fit in my gown, we timed it pretty close by time I lost the weight for the alternations. She added the bussle as well and did a wonderful job in a time crunch! I took the gown to my regular cleaners for steaming and it looked beautiful for wedding day! read more

Store opens at 9am but waited for an hour and a half for them to show up. Was told they sometimes come in at 10. Would recommend subtracting an hour or two from their stated opening hours to avoid disappointment. Clothes were cleaned and prices are fair so two stars. read more

I took my wedding dress to be altered at Ali's Tailoring, and Yung was a very valuable and efficient resource. She was able to quickly identify what needed to be done, and also gave us a great rate, considerably cheaper than most bridal places I checked with. Her work was also exemplary, and she had a quick turn around of 2 weeks. Yung has worked on bridal gowns in her past work experiences, so she knows exactly what to look for. You won't be disappointed! The changing room is a bit small, but it really doesn't matter if you get quality work done at a great price and in record time! This is definitely where you should go if you're in the Inman area. I take shirts and pants here whenever they need to be sewn, and it's always around $5-8. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5: Whenever I take something there, they say it'll be ready by such-and-such day, e.g., "It'll be ready by Friday." They ask for your phone number, but they never call! One time I showed up on such-and-such day to pick up a shirt, and they said, "We need a few more days." Now as a rule I call ahead of time to see if my stuff is ready, which is a bit annoying, but you can't beat the price and quality. Also, something else you can't beat: There's a small cute dog always here that often sleeps on the windowsill. This definitely makes me want to push this up to five stars and maybe I will next time I see that dog. read more

Great place. I needed a dress fixed for my sister's wedding. The straps were too long and the dress did not fit in the chest and sides. Overall it look odd on me. I took it to Ali Tailoring and she did a great job. She measured it and asked me how soon I needed it back. When I came back a few days later the dress looked great. The pants were found. Apology was given for the misunderstanding. Lucky for me I got the call when I did because I was about to buy new pants. At the end of the day, much like I said in my original write up, they do a decent job on the cleaning, they are open late, and it is a small, local business that needs to be supported. Do yourself a favor, make sure everything is tagged if you go there. I feel bad that there was a communication break down when I dropped off my suit in the first place but the customer is "always right" and should be proven wrong. read more

I wish I had read the previous post about them losing someone else's pants before I decided to come here. If I had, I probably would have saved a lot of money. I came here to drop off pants to hem, and when I came back, the "owner" (who wouldn't tell me her name- a short woman) began looking around for the pants. She told me that they were not there. I gave her my phone number- she called back w/in minutes telling me that I had already picked up the pants. This wasn't the case- Lie #1. In a civil tone I told her that she was mistaken and when I asked her to reproduce a copy of the receipt, she hung up. I walked down to the store and the woman told me that her phone accidentally disconnected. Lie #2. I told her that I could not have picked up my pants on the day that she said b/c I was out of town in NY. She started to get angry and told me that I even came in to her store and tried on the pants. Lie #3. I asked her how I paid. She said cash. Lie #4- I handle my discretionary errands on my credit card to collect points. I then asked her how we could ameliorate the situation and she resorted to telling me that I wasn't telling the truth.... Ah this was frustrating. So now my only leverage was to help other people not have to go through this same experience on a site like Yelp. If you give her business, I wish you luck. All I can say is that I'm glad that they do not provide daycare services b/c I don't think I could handle 4 different lies about how I already picked up my child. read more

I was always scared to hem my jeans until my friend told me about this place! I have had 2 pairs of jeans hemmed here, using the original bottoms, and they did a great job!!! you cant even tell they were hemmed! i highly recommend this place for hemming jeans. read more

I'm giving them 3 stars for getting a tailoring alteration I needed done at the last minute and for being open late enough that I can get there after work. That being said, I won't be going back there. I had simple casual items that needed taking in. I would never bring a dress or fancy item - the space to change in is a makeshift curtain right behind the cashier. I felt self-conscious that I could be seen. (And the owner/tailors husband was watching TV right in the other side of the curtain!). The floor of the place was covered in cardboard. Granted, we've had a ton of snow so it's better than wet carpet, but the place is just cramped. I paid in advance to have the work done within a few days. I know it got finished at the last minute because when I called ahead, I was told she was working on them. I like to support small local places, and maybe their dry cleaning is good, but overall I was not impressed and will seek someplace more professional for my alteration needs. read more

I have been going to Ali's for tailoring for a couple of years because it is close to my house and cheap. I have only used tailoring services because I thought she did a poor job on the one thing that I brought in for cleaning. My cleaners (Court Cleaners in E. Cambridge, love them) don't have tailoring services. However, I have finally decided to take my business elsewhere due to several things: 1) She is never there when she is supposed to be. She shows up late, and leaves early so it's nearly impossible for me to get her off work hours. When I can get there during the day, she isn't there half the time because she is off running errands and left her creepy husband at the counter. 2) The creepy husband is awful. The shop is super small and they use a small area with a curtain as a changing area. He is just a flimsy curtain away watching cartoons every time I'm there and I can't take it any more. 3) Ali has largely done a fine job on the hemming that I bring in. However, I brought in a dress last week with clear instructions on how I wanted it hemmed. When I got it home, it wasn't at all what I wanted it to be...it honestly looked like she had forgotten to hem it. I went straight back to talk to her about it and she told me that it was my fault for not being clear on what I wanted. No offer to fix it at all. I took my dress and business elsewhere and I won't be going back. read more
