This is the best dry cleaning, laundry and tailor I have ever used. They care; they do stellar work and I recommend them fully.

This is the most underrated and incredibly good tailoring place I've even found. I take all my vintage and other dresses to them and they've never failed me. My wedding dress needed significant alterations to size it down and Ann, an amazing seamstress, spent several days hewing, reconstructing the bodice, fixing the elastic on the arms, and making a bustle, among other heroic measures. My dress fit perfectly thanks to them. They also created a custom dress for our dog "ring bearer" from a vintage baby dress, and altered a vintage dress for my MOH to fit her better. This place has gone way downhill since May, the former owner, left. They are rude and resentful and complain about what you ask them to do. The latest took the cake. I took in a new pair of jeans that needed to be shortened just a little. They did their usual, Why do you want them shorter? I said, that's what I want. I tried them on and had them pinned to just the right length and told them I wanted the same color thread showing on the outside. They didn't cut off any fabric, and instead turned the hem up and sewed it the usual distance from the bottom, leaving a sort of ruffle inside that curled up. I brought them back. They told me, Iron it! I said I'm not ironing jeans. I told them to fix it with a regular hem, but the same length. They charged me $20 to fix what they had done, and made them way too short. This review is for both tailoring and dry cleaning. But first, the back story: my cousin was getting married and we had no bridesmaids dresses to speak of. Finally, on Tuesday night before a Saturday wedding, a FedEx box appeared at my door with the dress inside. I tried it on, and oh my gosh. It was gigantic. Three sizes too big, a foot too long, and with room to spare in the bust for another me. I had nightmares that night of my cousin banning me from her wedding party. I didn't think anyone would be able to tailor it on such short notice. Aside from being way, way too big, the dress was complicated: lots of chiffon layers and boning with an invisible zipper to boot. The next morning I take it to the first place I think of: Elegant Tailors where I've taken things for dry cleaning. The two ladies there were really nice and understanding and were happy to take the job. I didn't get the tailor's name, but she did a really detailed job at the fitting. After assuring me again that she would have it done in time, I paid and left the store. Halfway down the block the other lady working there caught up with me and handed me my coffee that I had absent-mindedly left on her counter :) Fast forward to Saturday morning, the day of the wedding. At this point I had already traveled to where the wedding was taking place. My boyfriend picked up the dress for me from Elegant Tailor's and met me. I tried it on and... it was perfect. It fit to a T. The huge chiffon nightmare-inducing dress had been magically transformed into a classy dress that I could wear down the aisle without embarrassing my family. I've also had a pair of pants hemmed there and taken stuff for dry cleaning on many occasions. They always have it done in time, do a great job, and are very friendly. read more

Trustworthy, timely, and things typically come back cleaner then when I brought them in. All good traits in a dry cleaner. I also appreciate that when I've lived a little too hard in my party frocks, and rip a seam or lose a button, they're able to fix the problem post haste. Yeah, it's a little pricey, but maybe that's because I go there so often I feel like I should just have part of my paycheck sent directly to their bank account. Also, cash only? Kind of a hassle. Although now that there's a Bank of America ATM just down by Cambridge Common, I have a lot less to complain about. Elegant Tailor Shop is a productive member of (business) society. read more

I am in awe of how great of a job the blue eye-linered seamstress did with my request. I brought in this droopy, long cardigan and asked if she could sew on some buttons so we have a dress. She fitted me and we chose snap buttons. In ONE day, I picked up my cardigan. Flawless job. I know it's uncouth to write a review after just one experience, but I must say that from my previous seamstress experiences, this is a solid place. On the more $$ side, but I ain't complainin'. This is a review for alterations only... I took a way-too-large bridesmaid dress here to get altered and they did an excellent job. I tried on my tablecloth of a dress, she expertly suggested how I wanted it taken in (her suggestions were spot on), she asked a few thoughtful questions, and we were set. A week later, I picked it up and it fit perfectly. The only downside? The cost was $80 (GULP). Yes, she did have to do some serious alterations, and yes, she did do a terrific job, so it was worth it, but be prepared for the sticker shock! read more

I've gone to Elegant Tailor for both tailoring and cleaning, and they've done a great job with both. They are the only cleaner in the Porter Square area that has not broken buttons on my silk shirts when I have them dry cleaned. They are cash-only and their turnaround for cleaning is usually a few days, but it's worth it because I actually feel like I can trust them with my clothes. They have also rushed tailoring jobs for me in the past (for an additional fee) - once they turned around a cocktail dress in 2 days, which got me out of a real bind. The tailoring is very skilled and they've fixed clothes of mine that were botched by other shops. They have also been very honest about changes I ask for and will recommend against any changes that they don't think will best serve me. I have stopped in to pick up dry cleaning on the way home from walking my dogs and they've been super nice about allowing them in the shop while I pay. Once, they even offered them a cookie. It's very convenient to be able to go in while I have them with me, rather than having to make a second trip out. Great service and better hours than some of the other places in the area. read more

Had two pair of dress pants tailored here recently. Both fit great--perfect length hem. $15 each. The little try on space is a curtained off area right by the counter, but it's enough privacy to get changed quickly. Everyone was nice, but nothing special. Good basic tailoring. Only dry cleaning experience was a little disappointing. I was bummed that when I brought in a stained blouse they didn't even want to try to get the stain out--just told me it was already ruined, so might as well try bleaching it. That was the sad end of my favorite white blouse. read more

In 2007 when I moved to Cambridge I began using Elegant Cleaners after a disappointing experience with a cleaner across the street. I was never disappointed again! For ten years they have provided me with prompt, precise, polite service. I regularly have laundered oxfords, pants, other shirts, plus my wife's occasional items, plus a little tailoring. All has come out beautifully - I especially like the hand-ironed shirt service, though a little pricey. Cash-only, excellent hours, clean and polite establishment, and highly recommended! Avoid this place at all costs. What kind of dry cleaner LOSES your clothes? And then accuses YOU of trying to fraud them? I dropped off my Tahari suit here for cleaning and I came back a week and a half later to pick it up. I gave the lady at the front desk my receipt and she went off into the back searching for it. She couldn't find it so she enlisted one of the seamstresses to help her and they spent 20 minutes looking for it and could NOT lay their hands on it. Whatever, I thought, and I told them, I have to go run errands and I'll be back. One hour later. I come back and ask for my suit. The lady then tells me, "You picked it up already." NO, you dumb prick, I was just here, I respond. She says, "Where is your receipt?" And I tell her, "I GAVE IT TO YOU." She looks at me straight in the eye and said, "No, I don't have it. You have it." Okay, so I was like, this is freaking unbelievable! So I tell her, "No, I know I gave it to you, so you could go find my suit. Where is my suit?" And this was her response: "We already gave you your clothes. Don't try to make up story about not picking up your clothes. We know you make up story, and that not our problem." What the hell? I won't include details about the hissy fit that I threw or the fact that I will be seeing them in court, but... DO NOT come here. read more

I do not recommend this place for down blankets. I brought my new queen size sateen down blanket for the first time. When I got it back (in big plastic bag) I didn't open it immediately. Later, I discovered that they discolored it (there are big bleached spots on one side) and entire blanket looked like it is at least 5 y.o. $200 blanket + $35 for terrible work... what a waist... read more

I wish I could give 6+ stars. My favorite skirt in the world had ripped (tragic, I know), and I tried taking it to other tailor shops, only to be told there was nothing to be done. Luckily, I decided to give it one last try at this store: they had a genius idea to fix it, and did it to absolute perfection. They also dry cleaned it, and it looks better than when I got it. It was also way cheaper than buying a new, poorly tailored skirt. I am actually going to go back there to thank her in person, but I think everyone in the area should know they do an amazing job. Elegant Tailor is where I go for all my alterations - they do a fine job but they're pricey. Jean hemming was $15 and dress strap alteration was $20. The service, though, is kind. Make sure to bring cash (this is pretty inconvenient in my opinion)! read more

Their drycleaning is good and reasonably priced. Their tailoring is pricey, but I've been extremely happy with it. I also like the fact that they're willing to say when something isn't worth doing, or when I won't be happy with the results. If you're bringing in a nice suit or a wedding dress AND you want to be coddled and fussed over, I'd go somewhere else. They're not coddlers. read more

After years of our family using Elegant Tailor for dry cleaning, shirt pressing, and occasional tailoring, my opinion has changed given two recent experiences and how the last problem was handled. The first problem I let slide assuming it was a rare oversight. Recently, however, I dropped off shirts to be laundered, starched and pressed. When I went to pick them up, one shirt had 5-6 wrinkles in the shoulder and chest area, and the collar didn't lay properly. Another shirt had a 7-inch strip of small pleated wrinkles on one side, and some scattered small wrinkles elsewhere. I'd never seen anything like this on past shirts they'd done. When I pointed out the obvious problems on the first shirt, I was told that "this is a $1.75 job, and if you want all the wrinkles out you'll have to pay $5.00 for a hand-pressed job." Also, I was told: "It will look better on a person than on the hanger." When I again pointed out the wrinkles and said it was not acceptable, the man in charge repeated that this is a $1.75 shirt job. He then switched "customer service" tactics and asked, "Is there something wrong with you today?" I responded that all that was wrong was that the shirts I was picking up still had wrinkles. He then said, "Okay, you have insulted me!" He then announced to the women working there: "Okay, let's close shop today!" It was mid-morning. It was clear I was not welcome there, and that nothing was going to be done to address the problem, so I paid the amount he demanded and left with my wrinkled shirts. read more

They got bleach on a custom tailored shirt of mine and would not admit it nor compensate me for it. I would stay away from this dry clear. They are very rough on clothes. read more

Stay away from this place. They make you pre-pay for tailoring, which is not reflected on the receipt, and then deny that you pre-paid. My fault for not insisting that they write it on the receipt, but they conduct business in bad faith. read more

I used to take my items here, but no more! They destroyed a very special dress (bought for my honeymoon), and REFUSED to compensate me, claiming I should get money from the department store (what?!). I love Elegant Tailor Shop. The women who work there are very friendly and nice. The dry cleaning is well priced, done well, and timely. I've been bringing in shirts or suits a few times a month for a couple of years and never had any problems. I've used them for minor alterations like changing a hem or replacing a button and I've always been happy with the work. If I were having something very expensive tailored or a very complicated tailoring job done, I'd go somewhere else though. The alterations aren't as well priced as the dry cleaning, but pretty typical of what I've paid elsewhere. For my typical garment needs they're the best. read more

I drive past 5 or 6 dry cleaners from my house to get to this one and it's worth it every time! The dry cleaning is superior - I have tried others and the quality is not the same. Once they were able to rescue a light pink silk skirt from a red wine spill. A little while ago, my husband took my suites to Zoots and my suits came back with a weird feel and the creases were off. An older couple suggested them. Elegant hand-made all of their daughters' wedding dresses. If they can do that work, my petite tailoring should present no problem I thought! The tailors and owners (often one in the same) are kind, talented and appropriately priced. $25 for jeans hemmed with original hem re-attached is normal. $25 for a dress taken in, also normal. Quick turnaround, great work, always friendly and nice. I have never found them rude, and often willing to negotiate pricing. Big thumbs up! read more
