They've repaired wear holes in jeans, fixed sweaters, covered a hole in the nylon shell of a down coat with somehow matching material, replaced zippers. I brought in three stuffed animals, and unfortunately, they were completely ruined. The texture changed drastically, and it was clear the cleaning instructions weren't followed. When I returned them, I was told I'd get a refund, but it never came through until I submitted a request myself. To be fair, they probably do well with clothing--they did clean my blankets nicely--but I don't think they're equipped to handle stuffed animals. If you're bringing in specialty or sentimental items, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. read more

I needed last minute alternations and called for an estimate for a bridesmaid dress. The guy on the phone said he would be at the store early and that he would have to see the dress in order to give me a quote. I showed up the next day and was quoted $45. Totally fine with me! The dress is two layers, and the outer layer is chiffon so I expected it to cost more. There is a small dressing room in the back corner. The whole exchange probably took about 15 min. He also took a look at the body of the dress to see if I could have it taken out at the bust (another $35), but there was was only half an inch available to take out. I decided against it and called back the day after because I changed my mind and wanted to add it on. The girl on the phone said that they had shipped the dress away for the alteration! Shipped it...where? Mysterious. Anyways they never called me back and then the following week I followed up. They determined that there wasn't enough fabric to let out. I couldn't tell if this was because they forgot about my request or if there really wasn't enough fabric... Got the dress 2 days early and both hems were perfect. Very happy! read more

My go to cleaners for all my dry clean needs and alterations (mostly hemming) The owner is always there, she's pretty quiet but very nice. Will try to accommodate you as much as she can, eg when you can pick up the dryclean. They recently moved to a newer shop which is bigger and cleaner. Probably easier to park also not being across the street from porter Sq shops. I've been coming to them for a few years now and will continue to use them. read more

Honestly, I wish I could say this place is good. But they have really, really gone downhill. They have both lost items and said that altering a dress simply couldn't be done. They didn't even try to go over options. They just said no. I started going here in 2011 for alterations and dry cleaning - way back when they were over at Porter Square across from the shopping complex. I then moved abroad for a few years, and recently went back to their new Porter Square location a few months ago to dry clean a few items. They lost one of my scarves I brought in for dry cleaning (a scarf that had sentimental value because I bought it while abroad). Luckily I checked the dry cleaning bag before leaving. They insisted I never brought it in. I insisted back that I had. Eventually they found it. This is a local business and immigrant-owned (and I especially prefer to support immigrant-owned). They had also provided good service way back in the day (although this seems to have changed). So I chalked it up to a simple mistake and shrugged. Then today I came in with a bridesmaid's dress that won't quite zip up the upper back. I told her I was very flexible with whatever solution she could think of to make the dress work. She simply said no, that they couldn't do anything at all. I asked again, suggesting things like - could you add some fabric? Could you add a wider zipper? Could you make it partially open back? She just said no. Honestly it seemed quite lazy. It wasn't even a conversation - just a no. I told her that in that case, I would go somewhere else where they could actually do it. I went to Union Square Tailoring instead, where they proposed an elegant solution - making the upper back corset-style. It took the tailor at Union Square Tailoring all of 45 seconds to propose this option once I explained that I was flexible with any solution she could provide. Fingers crossed. Very very disappointing that this once-amazing place has gone so downhill. Twice in a row I have had bad experiences there (within a few months of each other) so I can only assume this is the kind of service that can be expected now. I will be taking my business elsewhere from now on. read more

Good only for cheaper things you don't care that much about. Yes, it's cheap. However, the savings are not worth it if your clothes are ruined. Pants and work dressed seem fine. Cashmere and delicates, a complete gamble. Last pick up two cashmere sweaters (RIP) came back shrunk. Cashmere shouldn't shrink unless water gets in the machine. Really annoying since both were worn only a handful of times this past winter. Reading Ashley R.'s comment below, looks like they have had prior problems with cashmere. For the kill, a delicate Theory sweater came back with a big light yellow stain and holes (see picture). Worst of all....no mention of it when I picked up. Unacceptable. Basically I paid for them to put wholes in my sweater. As has been widely noted, they're cash only. Also annoying. In the age of Square and other mobile card readers, this is just lazy or a scam. In other words, you get what you pay for. Being generous by giving 3 stars because several suit dressed and pants came back fine before. Tl;dr don't take cashmere or delicates here. read more

Love love love this place. Conveniently located behind the Porter Square parking lot on Elm. They are almost ALWAYS open (maybe not on Sundays?) and they're open EARLY so I can swing by on my way to work. The pricing is fair, and they get everything back to you quickly. When I lived near Harvard, I got used to Kirkland Cleaners losing some of my clothing or shrinking sweaters (how is that possible?). Porter Square cleaners is consistently great. Also, recently got a pair of highwaisted trouser jeans hemmed. There's a little place in the back corner to change and then the owner will make his marks on the clothing. He did an impeccable job with an original hem on my jeans, and it was under $20! I picked them up 2 days later. read more

This shop can't press clothing on-demand. Some cleaners are all-in-one - the dry cleaning and repairs happen at the place where you drop off the clothes. Others just put clothing on trucks to their plant. This usually doesn't matter much to a customer, but it matters if you need something done in a hurry. Some shops can press clothing in under an hour. This one can't. read more

I have been going here for over five years now to get my pants hemmed. (Cursed with shortness, I am.) I don't know if I would trust them with a more elaborate tailoring job (like a dress or something), not because I don't trust their work, but because there is a little bit of a language barrier and I would worry that we would misunderstand each other. However, for clear obvious jobs like hemming, buttons, snaps, zippers, etc, they are great. Very friendly and totally fair prices. read more

I've only used this place once but the shirts I took there came out amazing. I haven't tried them on yet (I asked that they not be shrunk) so I'll have to try them on and post a follow up. So far I am happy with the price and the quality of the service they provide and find them to be better than most I've tried in the area. Ok so I tried my shirts on and they didn't shrink them and they were well pressed and clean. I'm a fan. This will be my go to dry cleaner from now on. I left about 14 shirts, several pairs off dress pants, and a couple of suits one day agree having worked from home most of the year due to COVID. The hours on the door indicated they were open from 7:30am - 7:00pm on weekdays. I went by twice hoping to collect my missing wardrobe but the place was shut. They are only open from 10:00-4:00. AND IT IS POURING RAIN. The girl behind the counter didn't seem phased by how upset I was, and the tailor's getting an earful tomorrow. Update: Showed up at the tailor's this morning - he called me rude and tripled the price for my tailoring, so I backed out. This place is probably good for college kids or others without a 9-5, but the service was absolutely awful and they had no respect for my time. One of the worst experiences at a dry cleaner I have ever had. My wife and I have an upcoming wedding and are leaving to go out of town on Friday morning. On Monday, I called and was told that I could have a tuxedo and dress ironed/pressed and it would be ready by Tuesday afternoon. When I arrived, they told me it would be ready by Friday. I mentioned the discrepancy and said they would have an exception for me and it would be ready by Tuesday. On Tuesday after work, I went back to Porter Sq Dry Cleaners at 6:00PM to pick up my items and was told that it would be ready in 45 minutes. I told them that I could not wait so would come back the next day. On Wednesday night, I went back again at 6:00PM and when I handed them by credit card, they told me they do not accept cards and only take check or cash. The closest ATM is a 5 minute drive away. I drove to the ATM and came back only to see that the bag that was holding my wife's dress was missing. I asked the lady working there about it and she told me that she has no idea where the bag is. I told her that I needed the bag since it was a rental. After pressing her for 5 more minutes, she went to the back and gave me my bag. Unbelievably frustrating experience. To date, I have only interacted with the woman that works there, who has always been friendly and accommodating with fair pricing. This past week I went to drop off several items. There was a man working. He was rude from the outset. He quoted me a dress rate for a shirt (I have had the same item cleaned there before, as a shirt) and when I questioned that, he was extremely rude and told me to just take the item back. I've been going to Porter Sq. Dry Cleaners for about twelve years for both dry cleaning and alterations. While the routine dry cleaning I have done probably isn't that difficult, I have been consistently impressed with the quality of the alterations I've received and with PSDC's cleaning of non-standard items. Today I picked I up my favorite tie -- an oddly classic beige and asparagus green repp stripe number from Ralph Lauren's now-defunct Rugby line -- from PSDC. After years of careless use, parts of the tie looked as though someone had rubbed newsprint on it. I thought my beloved tie was a lost cause and let the woman who co-owns & co-runs the place know when I dropped it off that I wasn't expecting miracles. The tie came back immaculate -- and somehow they pressed it without getting an upward arrow indentation transferred from the back side of the tie (which has happened at other places I've gone to). With respect to alterations -- I'm very short for a man -- the male co-owner (husband, if I may be so presumptuous) was the first ever to suggest to me that sleeve shortening on jackets can often be done by taking the jacket up where sleeve meets shoulder -- which preserves details like "surgeon's cuffs" without the prohibitive cost of remaking the working cuffs. As operating on a jacket (ha ha ha) at the armholes seemed scary to me, I was somewhat reluctant to have my cotton Monaco summer jacket go under the knife a few years back. The procedure was a complete success and I've since had other jackets taken up at the armhole instead of at the sleeve. The couple / family that run PSDC are very nice and would appear to work like 80 hours a week, so the hours are good -- if not for the owners, at least for those of us who generally work more traditional office hours. read more

THEY RUINED MY DRESS!!!! The woman tells me as an afterthought while I'm filling out the check that they washed it and all the sequins on my dress fell off. She tells me it's not her fault and it's because my dress might be of cheap quality, (it's Dress Barn, it's fine quality). She then tried to say something about how I should have told them? I don't know. All I know is now I have a dress with all the sequins gone, which was the highlight of the dress. She also seems shocked that I'm not going to pay for a ruined dress. I'm shocked they do this kind of awful business. I should never have come here. To their credit, they let me take my stuff without charging me, which in total cones out to about the original price of the dress. It's a shame I had to argue with her and hear all her ridiculous accusations before we got to that point. read more

Thank you, thank you, thank you Yelp! I was seriously in need of a dry cleaner's and a place to get minor alternations done (any pair of pants I buy is always going to be 2" inches too long). Yelp pointed me here to Porter Sq. Dry Cleaner's and I'm very thankful for it. Porter Square Dry Cleaner's did a great job hemming two pairs of work pants for me ($12 a piece, nice) and the turn around time was pretty quick. I had a bit of a clothing crisis about two weeks ago when I wore a white cashmere cardigan for the first time...and got chocolate on it. This is why I can't have nice things! But now, thanks to Porter Sq Dry Cleaner's, I can! I dropped off my sweater, stressed that I may have just ruined it with my own carelessness, and they calmly took it in and said, "we'll see what we can do. come back Tuesday". It was like dropping off a sick pet or something. I stop in Tuesday, anxious to see how things have turned out. There is my sweater, perfect and stain free. These people are miracle workers. Looking for a dry cleaner in Somerville. Called this place to see if they could finish my suit by next day. A Women answered "hello". Didn't even announce the business name I actually thought I had the wrong number. I had to ask her if it was the place. I asked nicely if it was possible to pay extra and have my suit done by tomorrow and she replied "no we can't" and hung up. Awful first impression. I called Mystic Cleaners and an incredibly upbeat and friendly man answered (an immediate noticeable difference from Porter) and said absolutely just bring it in! I brought in a vintage ( ie old) white and blue pinstripe searsucker suit. Wide lapels..60's-70's. Needed the pants taken in ( from roughly 38" to a 33") and the jacket taken in accordingly. Just tried it on...HORRIBLE! The pants are still off by about an inch, and I'm not sure what , if anything, was done to the suit jacket. $62 for this? For about twice the price I could buy a brand new suit, which is what I guess I should have done. I could go back and ask them try to fix the error, but the jacket...the jacket looks like nothing was done at all. Still HUGE!. I was hoping to wear this next weekend. I hate giving poor results a second chance. Can anyone recommend another tailor in the area? I have seen other posts about a 'language barrier'. Tailoring is numbers, pins and thread. Textile work is often done by non-English speakers. People that don't speak English do any number of jobs incredibly well (surgeons spring to mind) in the United States. I judge by the work, and this was terrible. I stood there and had the suit fitted right in the store, just like any other tailor The people working there seem very nice, easy to speak to, and I'm certain I communicated what I was looking to have done. I came in Thursday morning in a panic because I had JUST bought a dress from JCrwe for a wedding and needed it tailored by Sunday (but they're closed Sunday, so really by Saturday). I told them I had only three days and they said they'd do it. fast forward 24 hours and I get a text saying my item is ready! in ONE day they tailored my dress to make the straps fit (it was one of those dresses with thick straps that cross over to make a small triangle cutout in the back, but the way it was made the fabric stuck out instead of staying on my body), absolute lifesavers. Realized I've never written a good review for this place and that's a shame. I've been going here for 6-7 years. I'm a teacher at the JFK Elementary School right across the street and they have been my go-to dry cleaner and tailor (whenever I feel too guilty to have my mom do the work; which, I know, should be all the time!) They're as good as it gets. I work hard and sweat profusely, so my white shirts invariably end up with neck collar stains. In terror, I brought a bridesmaid dress in to get tailored. I've never done this before and the thought of standing in front of a stranger and having him tell me it didn't fit kind of freaked me out. When I walked in, I immediately felt comfortable. The owner just looked nice and I quickly changed in the back room. It soon turned hilarious - the issue with my dress was that it didn't fit over my (rather large) boobs. The owner basically had to touch my boobs to pin it which it was obvious he was not totally comfortable doing. He told me the only issue with it was that the top needed to be closed (which I was kind of skeptical about) but I went with it. I also dropped off two dresses that I needed dry cleaned. I picked up my tailored dress yesterday and to my astonishment, it was only $10 to tailor the front! That's as much as it is to dry clean a dress. I tried it on and it fit as well as it could have, given the dress and my knockers. I was super impressed. In all, I paid $30 for a dress tailoring and two dresses to be dry cleaned. This place is great. I give them my stuff, and they clean it. What more can you ask for? How about this: they're significantly cheaper than corporate behemoth Zoots around the corner. The owner does excellent tailoring work: mending ripped pants, hemming and taking in my wife's dresses, etc. I lost a pocket button from a pair of pants, and he replaced it with no charge. If you prefer not to have sweaters returned on hangers, they'll take a reusable bag and return your things in it. Everything is always ready on time; they've never lost anything of mine. The owner is always pleasant; you'll get to know him. Note they only accept cash or check--that's the trade-off for keeping the prices so reasonable. read more
