I'd been meaning to dine at Alibi and finally made my way over with a friend last night to celebrate his birthday. When I arrived, it took a few minutes to get anyone's attention to come to the host stand, but I had my pick of seats as the restaurant was pretty empty at 6:30 PM on a Monday. I at first picked the "throne" seat (LOL) and we later moved outside to the lounge seating. Let's start with ambience. Alibi has some fun digital art showing everyone from Snoop Dogg to Whitey Bulger--they really play up the "former jail" vibe. Everything inside is bathed in a reddish light that sometimes changes to purple-ish, and to be honest, it makes the red text on the menu really hard to read. I was sort of happy that my friend wanted to sit outside because the indoor lights were doing a number on my eyes. The outdoor seating area is nice, with patio-style seating and ample space. They even have fire pits, although it wasn't quite chilly enough to turn ours on. Our server was friendly and facilitated not only some birthday tiramisu but also birthday shots for us, complete with a live torching of orange slices to add flavor. We love a little show with our drinks! We shared truffle fries (I enjoyed them) as an appetizer, and my friend had the burrata--which comes with a bacalao empanada, so sadly I wasn't able to try that due to my seafood allergy. I did enjoy the Scampo Duck, although the accompanying veggies were a bit too bitter for me. I enjoyed the Palo, a rum-based passionfruit drink. They do have some interesting seasonal flavors in their other cocktails as well. My friend had a caesar salad with salmon, and he cleared the plate, though he did think it was odd that they didn't ask what temperature he wanted the salmon at. The skin on top was a bit crispier than he would've preferred. On the whole, while we weren't blown away by the food, we had a fun time and I appreciated our server's attention to making it a special birthday experience. The one place where it's acceptable for the Liberty Hotel to smell like wet sock and mold is the Alibi bar, since it really adapts fully to the prison aesthetic. It's a moody, red light interior, and it gives you a sense of danger, as if you were a criminal. However, despite how good the drinks sound, everything is a bit flat and fruit-forward. I was excited to go here as my friend had shared the story behind the restaurant. I thought it was a cool concept and couldn't wait to try. It is located inside the Liberty Hotel which used to be a jail back in the day. It was repurposed to be a hotel plus various restaurants including Alibi. The restaurant had a nice entrance, it looked fancy. We had a reservation and when we entered the concierge was not at the stand so we had to wait quite a few minutes before we were seated. We were seated in a table with bunk like chairs as well as a wider chair (with a back) that looked like a throne chair, which I loved. Both my friend and I sat on the throne like chair because neither one of us can do chairs without back support. The bar area was there but far enough that we weren't disturbed by the noise in there as it was busier than the rest of the restaurant. We ordered Calamari Fritto, Duck Fat fries, and we both had the Tuna Steak as a starter. My friend had an espresso martini and I had a drink called Hacienda. The food was delicious. I loved every bite of everything I had never had Tuna Steak, it was definitely 10/10. The drinks were good too. One thing I will say is that the area where we were sitting had red lighting which made it extremely difficult to see the menu. There were parts of the menu that were not legible due to the contrast of the lighting against the menu page. I couldn't tell you what color our drinks or our food were unless I used the flash to see. It was tough to sit there for a prolonged period of time. Once we wrapped up, we went upstairs to walk around a bit. The area was nice and I got to see other sections of the jail. I do love the concept and would go back but would request to sit elsewhere. lt took 20 minutes to be greeted by our server Selina L, and all she said to us was "What can I put in for you?". It took so long that the host apologized to us multiple times for the wait. We asked for refills on our waters and she never came to refill them. I ordered the Alcatraz ($14) and when we got the bill she put in the Shawshank ($16) and when I asked her to fix the bill she said that the computer rang it up correctly and that it didn't matter because they were the same price. If I could rate this zero stars I would. We were sat outside as requested, and it took 30 minutes for our waitress to come over. Based on other reviews I would have to assume our server was Selina-- but I do not know that for certain given she never introduced herself once she finally did come over. She did not apologize for the wait, then took our drink order and returned with only 1 of 3 drinks after 15 minutes. It took another 20 minutes to receive the other two, and when she came back she said her manager told her to give us a free appetizer because of the long wait and drink mix up. We ordered a pizza and also threw in 3 pasta dishes as we were starving at this point. The pizza comes out to the table and as we're finishing the waitress comes back to ask how it was. She then proceeds to ask if we want anything else to eat, followed by "oh actually our kitchen is closed for the night, but I can get you more drinks if you'd like". Having ordered 3 pastas we were incredibly confused. She then goes to see what happened to our pasta. The dishes did come out, however they were not what we had ordered at all. I ordered the cacio e Pepe which came out as leftover butter noodles with Parmesan cheese and pepper thrown on top. Someone else in our group ordered the carbonara and said it was closer to an Alfredo sauce if anything. Extremely dissatisfied and disappointed in our entire experience at Alibi. The waitress did end up taking 50% off our bill because her "manager told her to", however that even seemed like too much given the night we had. A group of friends and I went last night. We saw the new espresso martini menu and we were really excited. We made a reservation for 8pm, thought we would sit outside but apparently our reservation didn't say patio(?). We sat inside it was fine kinda rainy yesterday anyways. We got seated, we waited around 15-20 minutes for our server to come over. The host even apologized for us waiting and that she would try and find our server since the kitchen was closing soon. Our server (Selina L. Which we got her name from our check at the end) finally comes, doesn't introduce herself or anything just ask us if there anything she can put in for us. She takes our food order, and drink order. We just got fries to share at the table. Our drinks come and after that our server was a ghost. She never came to check up on us to make sure everyone was good and correct to our liking. She was also helping another table and she was giving them very good service which seemed odd because we were just coming in for drinks and we were being very nice and respectful. We all work in customer/food service so we understand that sometimes customers can be nightmares to deal with so we were kinda chill about everything going on. We're getting to the bottom of the fires and multiple people come over asking if we were done with the fries but it was kinda clear we were still picking at the fries at the point. We felt rushed to finish our food so we did. I was going to order another drink but again our server never came over so when she did we just got the check. On the check one of us was charged wrong so we informed our server and she said "ummmm I think it's fine they're priced the same anyways, but I can check for you." The drink we were getting charged for was $2 more. We all understand it's $2 but we just wanted to be charged for items we actually got. She went to go "check" and she came back to inform us that on the computer it shows the $14 but when she printed out the receipt that it showed the $16 and again tried to reassure us that the drinks were the same price. We decided not to argue and just paid for our bill. The whole experience turned me off from ever wanting to return again and it's really a shame because I was really excited to try the drinks they all looked amazing online but the vibes I got were not welcoming. read more

We sat outside on the patio and they were puddles and at least the cushions were dry. They could've had somebody to mop it up. The drinks are great and plentiful but typical boston pricey. There usually isn't a cover but there can be a little line due to ID checking. For dinner I had the small portion of bolognese which was meaty and saucy but lacked flavor. One of my friends grabbed the cracklings and hot pepper pasta which she said also lacked flavor, and another friend had the duck which was served charred on the outside and rare on the inside, not the temp she was expecting. This cool trendy bar was once a jail but has been converted to a hotel, restaurant, and bar. I have been wanting to try the bar for a while after having seen pictures of the cool drinks and themed decor. They have celebrity mug shots on the wall to keep with the prison decor. I went there earlier in the night as we didn't make a reservation and I wanted to get there before it got busier. We were seated right away, it wasn't crowded yet, but after having been there for 30 minutes it was full. For getting there and not many people being there yet, the service was a tad slow. The waiter seemed to be getting more and more stressed as the tables started to fill up. Their drink menu is really exciting, everything looked delicious, and again, they were on brand with the prison theme. I got the spicy inmate and it was delicious. They are a little bit pricier but that is to be expected at a trendy bar in Boston like this. We also decided to get some food and got the calamari, tomato pizza, and caesar salad. Everything was delicious, but WAY over priced for what it was. The salad was extremely small as well, especially for how much it costs. It would be fun to go back when it's warmer outside. (The restaurant -Clink- and Alibi Bar have similar decoration and there is Liberty Bar upstairs in the lobby.) The building itself is very interesting, you can see the old cells etc. The general decoration of Alibi Bar is like a prison and there are celebrity mugshots on the wall. We came here for drinks but the cocktail menu is not that impressive and is pricey. We ordered "Sawney Bean", "The Green Mile" and after "Amelia" -wine-. All were disappointing. Especially cocktails were not tasty. So we decided to go to the upstairs Liberty Bar to end the night. Probably the hotel is one of the best hotels in Boston, looks really clean.
