Our little guy had Plagiocephaly, so we were referred to Align Clinic for a helmet to correct his misshapen head. Really horrible experience for a new adult patient. I am in the market seeking a second opinion on my scoliosis. When I first called for new patient consultation, I spoke to Jolene. I specifically told her I wanted a zoom meeting because of covid and she said no problem. 8/4 came by, the day of appointment. No zoom meeting link was ever sent. So I called on 8/4 asking to set up another appointment, again with Jolene, this time in person. She said okay to 8/13 at 10am. Even told me to look at their website for details on brace, reminded me to bring my xrays on day of appointment. Today was the appointment, or so i thought. I called now to see, surprise! No appointment for me at all. It was scheduled at 8/6 at 10am. The next available is 8/27. For someone new to scoliosis, I didn't know having a knowledgeable Orthotist who understands the spine is the most important when it comes to Scoliosis. I had a bad experience with the first orthotist through the Dr. recommendation who made the brace incorrectly and wasted both money and time. I know now compared with my first experience, Align Clinic is the best when it comes to corrective bracing. Last year, after almost two and a half years of bracing, our daughter was given the all-clear by her orthopedic specialist to stop wearing her Wood-Cheneau Rigo (WCR) brace. We could not be happier with the results!!! We started this journey with much uncertainty and anxiety, but after the initial adjustment to the brace, it has been a surprisingly smooth journey, aided by our daughter's constancy and commitment to wearing the brace as instructed. We are so grateful to Paul Burnette of Align Clinic for fixing the flat spot on my son's head. He had a pretty bad case of Plagiocephaly (aka flat spot on the back of his head). My older son wanted to be held all day when he was a baby, so I was so happy when my second baby slept so much and didn't need to be held. However, I didn't notice that he rarely moved his head when sleeping in the bassinet, swing or in the stroller. I didn't realize this could cause flat head syndrome that was diagnosed at his 2 month pediatric appointment. I wasted 2 months trying to fix this myself by moving his head while he was sleeping and buying every head shaping pillow on the market, but nothing worked to improve his flat spot. Once its formed, the flat spot is virtually impossible to fix without a helmet band. I wish I went to Align clinic as soon as it was diagnosed, because the earlier you address it, the better the results. A babies head grows the fastest during the first 6 months, then slows down pretty rapidly until it stops growing around 18-24 months. Paul did an amazing job! My son wore the helmet band from 5 to 11 months (6 months total). He could have stopped wearing the helmet at the 4 month mark, but because we wanted the best results we decided to keep it on for another 2 months. See BEFORE and AFTER pic. I was so nervous that our baby would hate the helmet and it would affect his sleep. The baby has to wear it for 23 hours a day (1 hour off for bath and helmet cleaning). I also worried he would be too hot in it. Paul was so nice to drill extra holes in the back of the helmet because I was so concerned about our son being too hot. Our son took to the helmet with no problems. Didn't shed one tear and adjusted so well in it right away. It didn't impact his sleep one bit. We started at the beginning of winter, so it was perfect timing. Our insurance covered most of the cost (copay less than $200) and all the follow-up appointments were free. I can't recommend Paul at Align Clinic enough! He really knows what he is doing and we are so happy with the results! Took My daughter to see the scoliosis doctor this month and he said that her out of brace correction for her scoliosis went from 27 to 8 degrees and if she looks this good in September she may only have to wear her brace while at home! Both her doctor and her Physical therapist said they have rarely seen this kind of correction! The PT said that most people use the Boston back brace (because it's almost always covered by insurance) which only keeps things from progressing, while the WCR can actually correct. Schroth physical therapy and her WCR brace are making a difference. It took me 10 months to find a good scoliosis doctor that I felt comfortable with, the entire time, Grant, Paul, Jolene and the Clinic have been actively treating her scoliosis, answering all my questions, and addressing my concerns. Steve Baum is a true professional with results. He custom made a Boston brace for my eight year old son with scoliosis and nearly a 27% curvature of his spine. The journey with our daughter after finding out she had scoliosis at nine years old has taken us to explore many paths. My Miracle Brace. The WCR(Wood-Cheneau-Rigo) brace for scoliosis has been and is a MIRACLE BRACE for me, and has changed my life. I am not a young person but a senior adult. In 2014, I knew my scoliosis was getting worse. I was beginning to have some back pain, and I could actually feel the curves increasing, and I was losing my balance and stumbling, and thought I had MS or some other affliction. Fortunately, I went to Avanti Therapy in Boulder, CO, and met with Julie Edelman, PT, DPT, and Julie taught me the very important Schroth exercise techniques necessary to develop atrophied muscles on the concave sides of the curves, which help to straighten and maintain better alignment of the spine. Julie Edelman is the most knowledgeable person I have ever met that knows about every aspect of scoliosis. She also recommended that I go to Align Clinic in San Mateo, CA. to have a brace made by Grant Wood, owner of Align Clinic, and one of the inventors of the WCR brace. It was February 2015 that I received this miracle brace, and almost immediately, very positive changes had begun. This brace not only halted the progression of the scoliosis, but I had improvements beyond my dreams. The pain stopped immediately and within 6 months the lumbar and thoracic curves had decreased. I no longer leaned to the left, my ribs began to line up evenly. My left bottom rib was almost touching my left hip and after 6 months there was a significant distance between the left bottom rib and left hip. My body had changed so much in one year, the I then needed a new brace to allow for further changes to occur. After my 2nd brace, which Grant had made in December 2015, my improvements continued. After 6 months, my hips were totally straight and I could stand perfectly straight. My right shoulder no longer caved forward and it was equal to my left shoulder. My right scapula no longer stuck out, it was now flattened. I gained a minimum of one inch in height, and my waist had decreased from 31 inches to 28 inches(with no weight loss). The elongation, and shifting of the ribs and hips allowed this to happen. I threw away all of my baggy clothing because I can now wear tighter fitting clothes. Now in November of 2018, I had my third brace made by Grant Wood. The 2nd brace was no longer able to exert pressure on the convex curves since my body had changed again so very much. Braces for teeth can straighten adult teeth, and this brace can help to straighten an adult's spine, in addition to young people. This brace is non-invasive, and does work. I consider myself to be very lucky to have found out about this WCR brace, and the Schroth breathing techniques and exercises. The diagnosis of our 12 year old daughter's scoliosis started us on a path that has been confusing and overwhelming at times. Pretty quickly we knew (and our orthopedist advised) that a Rigo-Cheneau brace was the way to go, because it addresses the 3D nature of scoliosis, can lead to correction and not just a stop in progression, and it is more tolerable to wear. Our family is very thankful to Grant Wood and Paul Burnette for treatment our daughter has been receiving from them for almost 5 years and for results achieved with her scoliosis correction. My visit to Align Clinic was absolutely fantastic. I have an on going issue with a dislocating patella and am very picky about my knee braces. I have had a a couple surgeries which left me with a scar on the inside of my knee cap that does not allow me to wear any braces with a knee cap cut out. Paul Burnette spent nearly an hour with me trying to find the best possible fit. He brought out a number of braces that did the right job, but I just was not happy with the fit yet. Steve Baum is the orthotics rockstar of the Bay Area. We are lucky to access to his expertise. And unlike so many pros we meet in Disability Land, he does not treat us like cash cows. Steve has twice thoughtfully and expertly assessed my daughter's movements, body and posture to find her perfect orthotics. He interacts with my four-year-old daughter respectfully and calmly, and communicates with me so that I understand the reason for each recommendation he makes. He seems to operate with an engaging balance of reason and heart. In caring for my child with special needs, I am accustomed to multiple conflicting expert views and a constant uneasy feeling that I'm choosing the wrong intervention. What a refreshing experience to meet with Steve and see his experienced, reasonable, thoughtful approach! I feel confident my daughter's orthotics are the right supports for her.
