My experience with Align Credit Union is a cautionary tale for anyone considering opening an account with them. My husband and I opened an account with them approximately 10 years ago. The first reason was because it was very close to his place of business. Other reasons were because we wanted to have an emergency fund to fall back on and to possibly use it as a vacation fund for a trip to Australia. For the past 10 years my husband used it a few times, for miscellaneous purchases, nothing extravagant, so the money sat there earning VERY LITTLE dividends. All the while, as banks and credit unions do, they were using our money to lend to other people for cars, boats, sometimes probably life saving medical procedures or medications at VERY BIG interest rates. Keeping in mind that Credit Unions are owned by the members they're supposed to serve, our experience during the one time we intended to make a significant purchase, we were confident we'd have no problems with said purchase. We were very wrong. We hired a company to build a storage building in our back yard. We were quoted a price and and were instructed to obtain a permit and as soon as we had that, the job would be scheduled approximately 3 weeks later, and would take 1 day to build. There was no contract, only an order form describing what was ordered, which was sent to us through the mail. The project was supposed to be completed by the end of summer 2025. We applied for a permit and learned it couldn't be approved without site specific plans for our yard and building. We asked the builder to send those plans, and we were told it would be $300. Not an expected expense, but we paid it. Permitting received a PDF of every building the company built, which was not site specific to our project. When we asked for site specific, we were told it would be another $450. If we wanted it expedited, it would be another $250. The expedited time frame was 4 weeks, non expedited was 4 to 6 weeks. We chose to wait the 4 to 6 weeks, considering the difference was negligible. After 6 weeks, when we called to see if the plans were on their way. The representative said she told us it would be 6 to 8 week, not 4 to 6 we "thought" we heard, but of course if we paid the expedited fee, it would be sooner. She was lying of course, but bless her little thieving heart, we waited 2 more weeks for the 8 week time frame. At that time she told us it would be another 3 to 5 weeks, unless we wanted to pay the expedited fee. We had wondered if we were being scammed, but by November, when the promise was that it would be done by August, we knew for sure this company was nothing but a shill, getting every dollar they could before cutting ties with the purchaser. Now, I was fully aware that there are time limits to requesting help recovering money paid using Align credit or debit cards; however, I read the circumstances for extensions of time under the credit union rules, and I was reasonably sure that a building project, because of the time building takes, would qualify for an extension. I wrote to Align Credit Union explaining the circumstances, sending the request for an investigation directly to the President and CEO, Ms. Lydia Vazquez, with whom I was never allowed to speak, nor do I believe her minions ever told her about the letter, and minutes after receiving the request, a woman to whom I had not written, nor had I been introduced or told her authority within the bank, told me there wasn't a thing she could do to help us. Keep in mind, Credit Union Members are Owners. I know Align is not like Bank of America, with thousands of employees and banks across the country and at least some facade about being helpful, but Align Credit Union Headquarters are in Lowell for God's sake. Yet they couldn't even give me a legitimate reason for not offering the most miniscule bit of help to a member/owner. As far as I'm concerned, they are absolutely no better than the company who scammed us, nor are they better than any other scammer across this country. One last bit of icing on their scam cake, when my husband went in to close out our account, they said they couldn't give him all of it because they didn't have enough. He could only have $7,500. He said he be back next week for the rest. No, again. He'd have to tell them how much he wanted and when he'd be in. He told them he wanted $10,000 and when he'd be in. He had to go in 4 unnecessary times to close 1 checking and 1 savings account. Can a Credit Union with so little money be trusted? And I believe Member/Owners who still trust this farce should consider demanding a full audit with guaranteed accurate results distributed to ALL Member/Owners. And in case I haven't been clear, do not expect meaningful help from ANY of these employees. You will neither be viewed as Members, Owners, or even as customers deserving of courtesy or service. read more

No one answers the phone when you call for questions. On hold for hours. Can't print statement on line. They signed me up for paperless statements without my consent. Expect to wait in line for a very long time at the Haverhill branch. Online banking system is antiquated. Can't renew a CD on line and need to go to branch. They are the worst. I have 2 accounts a credit card and auto loan. They apply the wrong payments to the wring accounts and then accuse me of being past due. When you call the customer service department they give you a run around, it's like they don't even understand simple logic. They are robotic and just say the same incorrect information repeatedly. I've been with align for years through a job I used to have years ago at a hospital.. this credit Union has been nothing but a headache from day one . They're so called updates have locked me out of my account several times. My bills are paid through the credit union that's my whole purpose for having a credit union account and now I'm seeing oh we're doing updates and on the 1st you should be able to get onto your account.. what about the people who pay their bills a little bit early and don't want to wait till the first to pay their account and what happens if this runs longer are you going to pay my late fees.. it's a disgrace I f****** had it. I've been fighting myself for years trying to get a more local credit Union that has way more branches a line is almost no branches. I only want to pay my bill on a credit card . I call and it's comical you wait and wait and listen to a recording how you've updated your call system . It either rings off the hook and no one answers or it just beeps and disconnects. Unfortunately there is no place locally to pay the closest is Haverhill . Once my husband called and was still waiting drove to Haverhill walked in while the phone was still ringing told the girl working there and she said oh no I don't answer the phone I'm alone . I was having an issue with my credit card and after a couple of days of trying to figure out the issue, she sat on the phone after hours with me and tried just one more thing after all the other things that she had already tried and that one more thing did it!! Card member services leave much to be desired with Align Credit Union. My card was compromised and they first left a generic text message on my phone with no information saying which company they were from. A day or two later they left a voice message. When I returned the call and we determined the charge was fraud they told me the card needed to be canceled. BUT - the person I helping me couldn't order the new card. I had to call several people before I got to someone who could assist. And then it would take 7 - 10 business days to get a new card. I asked if it could be expited, and they said they couldn't give me a firm quote but it may cost up to $70. Considering almost all companies can provide overnight or 2-day service - this seems completely unreasonable. The post office only charges about $10 for a 2-day letter! read more

Choose this institution if your banking needs fit neatly into their limited hours of operation and are simple enough for one phone call. Or if you never spend more than $500/day, and never need more than $300 cash withdrawal/day. Otherwise, keep looking. Complicated or urgent needs outside of business hours just have to wait until the next business day at 8:30am. Twice this year, their fraud division contacted me about fraudulent charges to my debit card. This is good. In both cases they immediately shut off the card. Hey, wait a minute... it can take weeks to get a new card via USPS (which they will ONLY mail to your home address), or you can drive to a branch for more immediate needs. Convenient, yes? No! I had a nightmare experience in the second instance. Align left me stranded 100 miles from home, on the first night of a vacation to attend a three‐day music festival starting the next day. It was late at night, I had no cash, no debit card, no checks, and no credit card. Not only could I not pay for my lodging that night, I did not have $20 in cash (only--no Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle) required to get to the actual festival I was there for and had already paid for. Long story, but I ended up missing the entire first day of the fest, driving round trip back home for my check book and a credit card. It was humiliating to be denied cash from my cc at a bank (not mine; and of course no ACU branches near where I was in RI), as I was told I could, and then breaking down in tears right there at the teller window. I ended up writing a check to a person behind me in the teller line, who immediately deposited the check, and withdrew that amount in cash and then gave it to me. Problem solved by a kind stranger, nearly 24 hours later, after being snubbed by my bank who refused to either wire me emergency cash, or to send me a new debit card to where I was (would only send to my home address--not even overnight, but the usual 7-10 business days). Emergency or no emergency, rules are rules! This was a very expensive, traumatic, potentially dangerous experience for which it seems I have no recourse, which I will endeavor to change. I have been an Align member for over 30 years. I have had checking and savings there forever, a home mortgage, a HELOC, and even an inherited trust account. And they do nothing to help me in this case? Luckily I was within driving distance from home! A friend chides me for banking at what he calls my "hobo bank" instead of a real bank that's available to me 24/7 and presumably could have helped me in this instance instead of contributing to the calamity it turned out to be. I'm a senior citizen and identify with the pronouns she/her/hers, traveling alone. As such, I'm vulnerable in ways both obvious and not, and have no one to turn to for help in times like this. Luckily the host of my lodging treated me extremely well, and I enjoyed the last two days of the fest. I didn't expect ACU to treat me like a special snowflake, but to at least TRY to help me. Those I spoke with did not even seem to care, nevermind to help brainstorm a solution or to escalate the issue as it was a dire, urgent matter. Next, I expect to settle all matters with ACU and transfer all my accounts to a bank this time. read more

Don't bother applying for a mortgage there.... I was able to get preapproved and decided to proceed with them. After trying to reach out to them so with so many times through emails and many voicemails, I decided to just go with JDCU who has been very helpful and quick to respond to all my inquiries. Don't bother going there. Not worth it. Also after speaking with one of the staff, they're very short staffed on the mortgage/loan team. But still, should not be an excuse to neglect any applicants or not respond to their emails and voicemails. Just do yourself a favor and go to JDCU. read more

I recently switched from a local MetroWest back to Align due to frustrations only to discover the frustrations and lack of sophistication are worse here. My initial instincts and concerns have cone to bear fruit and now I'm in the same situation of trying to find sonething better (my mattress?). The prolems are ubiquitious but the service and amatueishness stands out. In addition the technology feels like it is not up to snuff. The app for ios only displays in portrait mode and takes forever to load. When you request an action there is frequently buffering. In addition when I opened the account I explained I didn't want anything to cone to me USPS but that message never got to the right person. In addition I got an email saying "Welcome, is everything ok?". I replued that I wanted them to supress mailings but no one ever responded. Their hours are egregiously short and they only have one nearby branch. With all the local banks advertising out there saying how great they are, there mst be a good one...yes???? read more

They purchased the credit union I banked at, which used to be great. Experience with Align is no better than you would expect from one of the monolithic banks, which is slow, and bureaucratic. Needed to update my address and have them resend my debit card (which had expired) and the nonsense with them began immediately with multiple calls, inability to login in to an inactive account. total lack of understanding that this a joint account so if the address is updated for my husband then the exact same account should have the same address for me since there is only one account - and they were absolutely zero help. They just don't care. Been with them for 24 years and I'm now ready to bring that to an end. Not sure if they got too big or what but their service has gone from tolerable to just poor. Too many other options out there to have to deal with people who legit don't care. I just felt the need to add to this review. Quick little description of the scenario. The other night around 6p I see there was a charge to my debit card from a local restaurant. Needless to say I was home and not at that establishment so I called the fraud line and the person on the other end then proceeds to tell me she will shut down my card and for me to call the branch in the am to open claim. She tells me she isn't sure why but states the charge was from three months ago. Either way I call, as advised, the next morning and speak to someone that really didn't seem to have a clue of a customers actual rights and proceeds to tell me my card was never shut off. Confirms the charge was from 3 months ago for $50 initially, then $20 tacked on and that to her it was somehow ok that this posted to my account 3 months after the fact. I asked to open a claim. I went back in my text with wife for the day they mention. I was at least able to confirm that I was 100% sure that I did do pick up from that location on that day. I was also 100% sure I did not leave a $20 tip for takeout. She then tells me "oh I'm sorry, we cant open a fraud claim, you need to call the restaurant". I say that's pretty crazy. I was just charged less than 24 hours earlier, and am telling my bank of 24+ years I DID NOT AUTHORIZE THIS AMOUNT and they tell me too bad. Keeping in mind I HAVE NEVER OPENED A CLAIM with them EVER! Anyways, I'm a half hour deep into this, getting frustrated beyond belief and figure, you know what, I'm done. I have accounts with other banks , I'll just end this call, talk with the CEO (wife) and pull my account. JUST NOT WORTH IT. Anyways, before I hang up , I confirm ok , so your refusing to open a claim and your telling me my card is still active. "YES" . Ok ty. Guess what happened the next day when I went to use my card?? YEP it was shut off . So whomever this fellow is that replied to this review , he obviously doesn't care either . I did have to call them again and I did get someone else and they did confirm my card was shut off from my original call. She then offers to help. I say oh, I didn't think you could help. Last person actually refused to help. She apologizes, says she can open a claim. I said I know that, but for the $20 that I was disputing and the now hour I've invested into this I just don't want to talk to Align anymore. I confirm card was being sent out. She says yes and apologizes again. Great. I get my card a week later and see they charged me $10 . LOL , Seriously I cant make this up . 24 years. never opened a claim, refused help, am lied to, go without a card for a week and then I get charged $10 Yep. As I said. There are many banks that will love to help you . I have accounts at Northmark Bank and NESC credit union and the difference in service is not even comparable. After 24 years of service I was getting ready to pull every penny from align. With a 30 minute ride to lowell and branches scattered it was imperative that I be able to use the ATM when necessary. But inevitably the ATM was out of service when I needed it. From unprofessional tellers to those that don't read notes on the account, my frustration was mounting. My issues are still " wait and see" but with the assistance of Joan Berube it looks like things are going to start getting better. Joan was very empathetic and when she told me she was going to investigate and call me she did. Not only did she call but came up with a solution that made my life easier. Align has a financial institution has to start taking responsibility for their lousy equipment and tellers with poor attitudes. There are too many well equipped and sophisticated competitors for them to turn a blind eye. Another 6 months with them and if I don't see other improvements I'll hit the road. No thanks Matt. The spending limit is only a small part of the frustration. It was being given the run around. I made 7 calls to customer service and finally on the last one was told about the spending limit. One representative told me that the charge for the car was too big and to split the expense into three transactions. Obviously didn't work. I was told to call the banks line even though the representative must have been aware they were closed and I wouldn't be able to speak to anyone until the morning. I even asked what phone prompt to select and she said "something like customer service,, customer something" . There no option for credit services or anything similar when the bank is closed. Align Credit Union offers the lowest rates for mortgages, home equity loans, and other loans. The loan stays with them for the life of the loan. The required minimum amount for business accounts is low, unlike other banks that require a minimum of $500 or greater before fees. Not at Align Credit Union! The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Hours are reasonable, particularly the early and late hours on Friday. read more

I had the worst experience dealing with Align Credit Union! I had purchased a 2020 vehicle in August of 2019 and took a loan through the Danvers branch. I just now totally paid off my loan in June of 2020. (less than a year on a 4 yr loan) Don't ever buy GAP insurance here, better yet go elsewhere for a loan! Nothing was explained to me at the time of the loan, I didn't get one cent reimbursed to me from my GAP insurance when I paid off my vehicle (1st time this has ever happened!) These people will do NOTHING at all to help their members! Just SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHES and go to a credit union that will give you good customer service that you deserve because you sure won't get that here!!! read more

My wife and I have been with Align for about four plus years now. Align Credit Union is very much a mixed bag. My local branch in Amesbury is as helpful, competent and friendly as any bank I've ever used. (I'm 65). They're wonderful to deal with. Hanna the branch manager is simply incredible and so are Pam and Jen. However, interactions with the main office and especially the mortgage department historically has felt like I was dealing with a totally different credit union. I've had colonoscopies that were more pleasant. On more than one occasion I've had to go to the Amesbury branch frustrated out of my mind, to rectify issues that were supposed to be handled at the main office. If you're applying for a mortgage or home equity line, for the love of God, stay on top of them or your clothes could go out of style waiting for them. It's truly unfortunate that the incredible customer service experience that exists at the Amesbury branch doesn't permeate to the main office. read more

By pre-ordering the exact car I wanted I was able to avoid loads of baloney dealer add ons that force the price up hundreds or thousands of dollars. Switched my accounts to Align about six years ago because I was tired of the service and fees I was getting at my prior bank. I just recently used Align for my mortgage refi - they were amazing. Super easy online application, the entire mortgage department was incredibly responsive. Got a fantastic rate and had a great closing experience - all during the COVID pandemic. Worse customer service experience always! This bank does not understand that member service is a priority and they have no care in the world for its members. Have an account here for many years and more for convenience purposes as to location and having many accounts linked to this account but enough is enough. This bank will charge you for everything in addition to penalizing you for the most ridiculous reasons. Policy is ridiculous as well. Make sure you read everything before creating an account here so you won't deal with all the headaches I've dealt for years in addition to all the stupid charges. Now I know how they really make money, from its members. Find a better bank that will provide the best interest for its members because this one will give you the worse experience for sure. read more
