This review is solely based on the pool and beach access as I did not stay here. Pool is absolutely gorgeous! Unfortunately, it was freezing cold so I couldn't actually enjoy it. The hottub was really beautiful with the waterfall, but there was a kid swimming in it and splashing for over an hour, so I had to wait to enjoy it. Staff should be walking around and making sure everything is in order. They have an abandoned swimup bar, which looks absolutely terrible. To me, it ruined the ambiance of the rest of the pool area. Even if they don't serve alcohol there, it should still be setup for something. Having access to a gold cart going up and down the hill to the beach was such a godsend with our stuff! They were easy to call and arrange both ways. We didn't have to wait very long and the view was beautiful. The beach itself is gorgeous and they have a ton of chairs for their guests to use. Not quite sure I would want to pay their prices to actually stay here (especially with how nitpicky they are based on other reviews), but I was happy for a chance to hangout by the pool for a day.

The resort and amenities itself are great, but the room was just ok. I think if the room would have been nicer, we would have liked this place much more. The restaurant on site, bar, and sundries shop (where they actually have great homemade breakfast burritos) are wonderful. The resort is quiet, and is pretty. You can take a leisurely walk down to the beach. Just what you are looking for with a trip to Hanalei Bay.

This was a great place to stay on the north shore. Everyone at the resort is so friendly and helpful. The grounds are kept up beautifully. They have two pools, the largest has beautiful landscaping and waterfalls and can get crowded but the smaller pool was mostly empty and a great place to read undisturbed. There are pickle and tennis courts and we saw lots of people taking lessons. There is a fire pit overlooking the bay. They have a private beach that is shared with one other resort. It's a bit of a walk downhill to the beach but they offer golf cart rides back up, if needed. They rent beach stuff (snorkeling, chairs, boards) down by the beach and there is a bar down there, as well. There is a funky little workout area by the beach with weights and bars. We stayed in a room with a view of Hanalei Bay and the mountains in the background. It was so beautiful it looked fake! Our room was like a hotel room. We had a balcony with a tall table and chairs. My only complaint was that they do not allow microwaves in the rooms. We had a refrigerator but no way to heat up our leftovers. They have two restaurants on property. Both are open in the evening only. The Happy Talk Bar and Restaurant has great views and the food is decent. They also have live music every night. It seemed pricey at first, but then you realize its in line with the rest of the restaurants on the island. Wikipizza is the other restaurant and it is actually priced pretty well and the pizza is good! We ate there once and took it back to our room a second time. I would stay at the Hanalei Bay resort again.

NOT what you want to receive upon check in! Power outage 9-5 for two consecutive days during our stay!!! wtf are we paying for

Upon check in we were told power would be out from 9-5 two consecutive days in a row. No use of fridge, wifi, hot water in the room, or hot tub during this time. WTF are we paying for? How disappointing. Not a way to be welcomed. And no discount or upgrade offered for the inconvenience? Free resort activities dont make up for this

The ultimate Hawaiian vacation resort in Kauai. It truly fulfills the island feel when staying here. The room sets the vibe & feels Hawaiian. The views looking upon the Na Pali coast line & Hanalei Bay are absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. The pool felt very exotic & the family loved spending long hours poolside. My son especially loved the little hideaway cave behind the waterfall & the man-made beach. The pool is absolutely ginormous too! It has a large section of shallow area & the shape allows you to have privacy. There's a dedicated section that is walled off within the water next to the beach section that is perfect for kids. Nice & shallow. The hot tub is a decent size & we didn't have any overcrowding issues like we've experienced at other resorts. Surprisingly too as this location has dozens of buildings! The grounds are huge & the setting is perfectly Hawaiian. Shuttles to the beach easement & Koi fish feedings for the kids. You'll also experience Pop-up surprises throughout the week that the entire family can enjoy. Our favorite was the shave ice pop-up while sitting poolside. It was free! Although we had one issue arise during our stay while the resort was replacing roofs. The staff was very empathetic & made things right for us after some roofing material started to fall onto our balcony. I also feel obligated to warn anyone staying here that there is a hefty nightly fee that they charge. Even after paying for your booking well in advance. One week's worth of fees can set you back over $600. So set that aside before your stay so you aren't blindsided by it. Other than that, this resort makes for the perfect Hawaiian family vacation! You'll feel like a king staying here.

Stayed here in a private airbnb rental. Beautiful resort, excellent service, clean grounds, breathtaking views, private beach, tennis, pools, snorkeling. Be aware of resort fees etc. They were transparent, but they add up. Must stay location on the north side. Beach was a short downhill walk, with golf cart service available to drive you back up if necessary. We just walked it, it was a nice pathway. If I am being honest a lot of the negative reviews are bewildering to me, including people who stayed off premises at random airbnb locations and are complaining they couldn't use the resorts private beach? Why are you leaving a review here? Makes no sense. Also, if you can't find food you like on the resort, try taking your car (has four wheels, goes beep beep) anywhere on the beautiful island of Kauai for amazing eats.

We love this resort! Always a great experience for us! The staff is friendly, the food is great, not to mention the amazing views! They really keep up with the areas all throughout the hotel. The walkway to the beach is well kept (may be a little steep) but it's a great workout! The staff is very helpful when needing things for your room. Check in was a breeze for us! This is by far our favorite resort!

The gorgeous view of the beach--before we were rudely turned away for not having a wristband
    Erik B.

We rented an Airbnb nearby with "private beach access." That "private beach access" was a short walk through this hotel's grounds and down a hill, with a beautiful view the whole way. Apparently, the hotel has changed its policy, so everyone needs a hotel wristband to be on their grounds. They told us we needed to leave and walk a long way down the street and down another street for a different entrance. They told us we could drive there, as there was a parking lot. Yeah, a parking lot with seven spots! We couldn't park, so we went back and walked. It was quite a walk, longer and less scenic than what the Airbnb promised. It would have been a lot more convenient to simply cut through the hotel's grounds. We were not planning to use their pool or do anything disruptive, and the fact we were turned away with all our equipment was a real bummer. We spoke with the neighbors at the Airbnb, who are very upset. They have lived there for 20 years and said they are very upset about this change (understandably so).

HB resort is a beautiful location & not far from Hanakapi'ia Falls. Special thank you to Ronya Roch @ the front desk for being such a warm ray of sunshine and so welcoming. The resort is absolutely breathtaking and lush + just a short walk from its pool to the beach. The service was excellent and the view from the balcony was pure nature and birds with mountains in the background. Extremely rural yet close To everything you need (grocery store, bars, restaurants). * my only disappointment was the young lady & the older woman that attend the host stand @ Happy Talk place (HB resort restaurant). They were extremely rude and not at all in alignment with the great hospitality and service @ HB resort. I understand some ppl might not like their job, but the way the treated / spoke to other guests & myself was totally unacceptable. I, however, was too busy being happy & grateful to let their negative energy affect me. All in all, when I go back to Kauai I am returning to Hanalei Bay Resort. What a great visit! Mahalo!

Beautiful resort with great views. Staff is either very helpful, or clearly has some animosity towards tourists(which I do fully understand but also... it is a resort). Could definitely use more signage about the reef down at the beach, most people think they are just walking on rocks and aren't aware that they are killing the reef.

Our favorite place to stay!! Been doing it for years. Great rooms, kitchens fully stocked with plates, glasses and utensils. Great bathrooms. The pool are and many tennis courts are a plus. The views are amazing!! The heart of all of this, is the staff!!! From room attendants to bell persons to management and the lovely ladies that check you in. You cannot experience Kauai without visiting!!

Pool bar and only option for poolside drinks closed indefinitely

Ask the Community - Hanalei Bay Resort

What are the pool and hot tub hours? I noticed many reviews claiming that they have short hours but no answer as to what the hours are. I will be Kauai at the end of August through the beginning of September.

From what I remember last fall they were pretty typical for resorts. I think the hot tub was open till 10:00. If the pool "closed" earlier people were still going back and forth to cool off. I know pool hours were probably listed but they weren't…

We loved our 2bedroom villa, while we had plenty of space the property itself is small enough that walking anywhere doesn't feel like a chore. The couch and blankets had a few mystery stains that grossed me out. Cocktails and the restaurant are insanely expensive. We are talking 28 dollars for a cocktail. Additionally the staff member Nancy (pool attendant) was rude to me. I wasn't able to locate a dry chair in the sun at 4pm. so I asked an employee for permission to use a chair near the cabana. Permission was granted but she wasn't happy about it. So asked me to move, while I didn't have issue with moving I did find it rather unprofessional of her to yell at me for not reading the sign and while she offered to help me when I asked to a dry chair on the sun she walked away ranting about my lack of awareness. To make matters worse the same employee had a separate issue with my husband in reguarda to pool towels. When I tried to address it with the front they weren't very helpful. All in all we did have a great week there and hope to go back.

Who knows. I was a child, and a guy who lived down the street that my mom made me call "Uncle" told me it was. I've trusted that man with absolutely zero credentials for over 30 years. Well, I finally made it to Kauai, and let me tell you... it is absolutely gorgeous. Lush. Green. Rainy. And now I also look like Newman from Seinfeld. The circle of life. I spent four nights at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, and it was... nice. Let me start with the good. My room was beautiful, the views were incredible, and the grounds are spectacular. Tropical plants everywhere, waterfalls pouring down the mountains, and postcard views in every direction. Now... the not-so-great. The food was aggressively mediocre. By day three I was fantasizing about a microwave burrito like it was a Michelin starred meal. I would've fought someone for a Cup-O-Noodles. I think it's called 1 Hotel because it's the one hotel around, and they know you've got nowhere else to eat. Unfortunately, all three restaurants seemed to have the exact same menu. Room service, The Sandbox, and the sushi restaurant all blurred together into one very expensive wagyu smashburger. The staff? Honestly, I can barely review them because I hardly interacted with anyone. Nobody bothered me, which some people probably love. The pool is beautiful... but there are nowhere near enough lounge chairs. Every morning it looked like the midwest trophy wives stormed the pool deck at 6:00 a.m. to reserve every chair with towels. If you want to sit within eyesight of the water, you're going to need an alarm clock and the competitive spirit of a suburban mother on vacation. Which brings me to... the kids. Look, if you have kids, that's wonderful. They're just not for me. Splashing. Screaming. Running. Falling. Crying. Parents yelling at their kids. Parents yelling at other people's kids. Kids somehow yelling at adults. It was like spending the afternoon inside a Dave & Buster's that happened to overlook the Pacific Ocean. If you're looking for a quiet couples getaway, I'd probably avoid summer break. There is an adults-only pool, but it's pretty small and mostly occupied by guys taking "business calls" while crushing Michelob Ultras. There's also a tiny beach area that's... ehhhhh. Now the spa? That's where this place shines. The second you walk in, it smells incredible. The kind of smell that immediately convinces your brain you've become a much healthier, more emotionally stable person. I got one of the best massages I've ever had from an amazing therapist who somehow found muscles I didn't even know existed and negotiated a peace treaty with all of them. I walked out feeling completely relaxed, refreshed, and significantly less judgmental about everything else. I'd absolutely go back for another massage, and next time I'd definitely book a facial too. My biggest surprise was the cleanliness... or lack of it. For a luxury resort, it never quite felt polished. Dead flies sat on windowsills around the property. The carpets always looked a little grimy. There was a half-finished iced coffee sitting outside my elevator that stayed there for a day and a half. None of it was a huge deal individually, but after a while you start noticing all the little things. Overall, I had an amazing trip because Kauai itself is one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited. Would I go back? Absolutely. Would I stay at 1 Hotel again? Probably not. For what they're charging, I expected luxury. Instead, it felt like I paid luxury prices for a really nice hotel that still needed someone to walk around with a rag and a trash bag. If I'm spending that kind of money again, I'd probably book the Four Seasons.

This cottage is a perfect vacation rental if you like to feel the unique qualities of the community…read moreyou're visiting. HMBC's openness lets you enjoy the warmth, the wetness, and the beauty of Hanalei Bay in a low-key way that lets you feel like you really live there. Maybe I am reacting to our trip to the Princeville St. Regis hotel for sunset cocktails. That beautiful resort felt like placeless luxury. The views were Hawaiian, but the grand style of the rooms, plentiful central air conditioning, upper-class airs, and property layout were suitable for anywhere from the Caribbean to Mexico to wherever... My preference is to stay where the local touch is celebrated. So..., HMBC is not endlessly elegant, it's a beach cottage. But, it is definitely my type of place! HMBC's front lawn leads directly to a very swimmable, less crowded area of Hanalei Bay. We walked 4 miles roundtrip on the Bay every morning, crossing the two local rivers coming into the sea at different places each day as the sands shifted. We took our first swim of the day on our pre-brekfast treks, and decided that the placement of the cottage was enough to ensure a wonderful vacation. The building is smartly designed with a large picture window in the living room. You can sit on the couch or one of the two reclining chairs, and watch the water, surfers, and swimmers go by. Moreover, the furniture and decorations feel well-designed, thought-out, sturdy and in excellent shape. Nothing is beachy, sticky, or falling apart. Suzanne, the owner, knows how to add touches to the property let us feel even more comfortable and able to relax. The building is well maintained and clean, which is not unique but noteworthy because those basic qualities are not universal in Hanalei! There are also nice, if somewhat common extras like a reasonable selection of pots and pans, microwave, toaster-oven, a charcoal BBQ, wide-screen TVs, full-size new refrigerator, comfortable chairs, washing soap, beach towels, extra towels of all types, and other reassuring amenities. We also liked the lock-box on the porch. That arrangement was new to us, but it let us lock up, swim, and not worry about losing the key on the beach. The books, games, and beach-gazing telescope in the living room were truly above-and-beyond treats. So was assortment of beach toys and mats and chairs that were in excellent shape and felt clean. We even appreciated the unique photographs on the walls and the other artwork that was unique and felt just right. We traveled with friends who rented a cottage across the grass from us. Their place is owned by a different member of the extended family that owns 5 adjacent waterfront units (and more elsewhere in the country). We felt lucky to have chosen HMBC because our owners seemed to understand what boosts a vacation. Our cottage had a gas stove, which I much prefer over the electric one our friends had. Adding gas must be costly, but it let us enjoy cooking more. Plus, there is a washing machine and gas clothes drier at the cottage which was both handy and free ... our friends had to pay several dollars to dry their clothes at an underpowered electric drier. (Come on owners of the other cottages... you're charging $400+ a night and then you make your guests put in quarters to wash and dry their clothes?? I am sure glad HMBC's washing and drying were not nickel and dime annoying extras. I mean, do you want to carry a bag full of quarters from the mainland in case you need to do laundry? Geeze!) Another special at HMBC is its lovely, hot-water plumbed, outdoor shower. We also appreciated that our kitchen was stocked with matches (our friends had none) and lighter fluid (again, they had none). Our friends even had to ask the housekeepers cleaning other cottages for more toilet paper. You're given the owner's telephone number is case of any problems. We had an incident: the clothes drier started smoking with an electrical smell as soon as we turned it on one morning. Suzanne had someone check the problem that afternoon and, when it turned out the motor had burned out, had a new drier installed the next morning. She was very, very responsive, came out herself to make sure we were okay, and ensured that the minor problem was solved. That visit, by the way, is when we discovered how delightful and friendly Suzanne is! Overall, in our opinion HMBC is excellently laid out, well taken care of, and, well..., as good as it gets.

Views of Bali Hai from your front lawn? If you want the quintessential Hawaii experience, then stay here! The Moon Beach cottage is on the rustic side (think gecko visitors)--but that's part of its charm. Do yourself a favor and use the outside shower as your primary one (it's amazing to look up at Bali Hai as you lather up). The bed is a lot more comfortable than it looks, which is a big plus in my book. One night it got a bit noisy as some kids were partying on the beach--but everyone else we ran into was nice and respectful (and quiet). Sitting in the living room on the rattan furniture with the windows open and watching the surfers and the waves is pure heaven! It's one of the lesser-expensive places in Hanalei, but at $1,950 for the week it might be above some people's price range. But you are right on Weke road (multi-million-dollar real estate)--in walking distance to town and with direct ocean views. Also, the house sits on a big lot. There's even a neighborhood cat and dog who come by from time to time to say hello--just welcoming you to the neighborhood with that ol' Aloha spirit. Skip Poipu. Stay here. (You can thank me later...)

You have multiple pools, multiple hot tubs, pickleball courts, recreation rooms(loaded with interesting books, puzzles, games). There are food trucks a 5 min walk away too. The condos were so spacious and clean, we had a wonderful view of the ocean from our balcony. Condos come with beach chairs you can use when out and about exploring the island. Alanne was incredibly helpful. She is so sweet, and let us know the great beaches and great food places to visit while we were there. Very well maintained and overall so pleased with our stay, would recommend to anyone!

The bathrooms smelled moldy. So damp. 2. Master shower would not heat up at all. Sink would get hot. Guest bathroom would get hot. Not the master shower no matter how it was adjusted or how long it ran. 3. Wasn't dirty but also wasn't the most clean. 4. Super dated. And not in a darling, historic way. The ceiling fan blades were yellow and droopy. No pull chains to adjust. Carpet in the master. Showers felt really dated. It felt safe and we appreciated the ability to do laundry, dishes, etc. Didn't use the pool but it was cute. Probably wouldn't stay here again.

This was our second time to Kauai in 3 years, both times staying in Hanalei. We were thrilled to…read morefind Hanalei Surfboard House for many reasons. 1: The location across the street from the beach, plus a short stroll into town, is the absolute best. We truly didn't need a car this trip, as we spent all of our time in our little heaven of Hanalei. 2: The property was ideal for a relaxing and comfortable stay. We prefer Airbnb situations when we can find them, and this fit the bill perfectly. The entire property was expertly maintained, from the gorgeous exotic grounds, to the care of the interiors, and the structures were without a doubt built with high quality and integrity. 3. Although there is a few suites on site, there is excellent privacy both inside and outside. No noise issues at all. We loved the covered lanais, both front and back. 4. This really could move up to 1, but the bed and the shower were both top notch! Bed and pillows so comfortable, and that's always our biggest issue. The shower had amazing water pressure and got as hot as you wanted it. 5. Simon - he's a gem! We got to meet and chat with him and it's clear, he loves this place and the people who visit.

We loved all the retro & eclectic decor surround the outdoors & the inside of our Cowgirl suite was eco& retro as well ! We genuinely loved our stay here & were well taken care of by Simon . We did arrive there when there was a tsunami on the way but it was all good & we didn't get hit by the tropical storm fortunately. Simon also offered his upstairs home in case we had to move to higher ground . Simon was Mr. Hospitality ! I know sometime in the near future we will be back again more than likely on our anniversary. Simon also recommended some great places to eat & venture out too . This place is phenomenal so check it out you won't regret! It's own little paradise.
