Ali's Roti located in Parkdale along Queen St. W. near Lansdowne Ave serves up West Indian food in a casual environment. Their menu consists of a variety of items including curry rotis, paratha, curry rice dishes, jerk chicken, stew (chicken or oxtail), fish, soups, patties, as well as doubles. You are also able to pay by cash or card (if using card there is a service fee though!). Entering the space, you walk down the restaurant until you hit the cashier. You order your items there where you can eat it for here or to go. I've only gotten their doubles here but they are a pretty big portion and they taste great (you can choose your level of spicy and they also have a tamarind chutney as well). I've seen people eating their rotis there and the portions are pretty big. Service is no frills and the staff are friendly. This is a no frills place where you come for the good food. Found this spot on IG and decided to give them a try as other influencers mentioned they had the best roti's in Toronto. I got the curry chicken which I thoroughly enjoyed the flavor of the chicken inside, my problem was with the roti. As I cut more into the roti, it looked as though it wasn't cooked properly like patches of dry flour throughout to the point it didn't look appealing. I also grabbed a double which I enjoyed, they are much bigger than the ones I get at home in Va. I never had a Trini soda ~ Solo kola champagne which tastes very similar to the Jamaican version. The gentleman at the front counter was very nice and patient. The decor was definitely a Trini island feel. Bright colors and hand painted pictures. I'm on the hunt to find my favourite Caribbean spot in Toronto and this restaurant was on my list: The flavour of the curry chicken I got was pretty tasty but the consistency of the curry gravy was like a bunch of spices made into a paste, not a sauce. I presume the rice & peas soaked some of it up but it was overall quite dry. That being said, the flavours were pretty balanced and I appreciate them adding some pepper sauce on the side (it wasn't nearly spicy enough without it lol). The salad on the side was just a chunk of tomato and a couple pieces of lettuce -- nothing too exciting there. The portion size was decent for the price; I paid about $18, but I've had bigger portions of curry for $14/15 so it was a bit steep. Overall I'd give this place another go because the flavours were good, but I'll choose something different next time...maybe the stew chicken roti! read more

Ali's is my go to for authentic trini food. I always get their curry and paratha separate. Highly recommended to have the rotis separate. I got delivery during covid and the food was hot and tasty. A solid roti joint. Had the goat roti. The flavor was on, but somehow it felt like it was missing something basic, perhaps just some salt would have made a difference. And it would have made a big one, actually, since you can't really salt your roti filling adequately once the whole thing is made. The goat was tender and the sauce was flavorful and spicy. I was still expecting something a bit more rich, but it hit the spot. I'll note that I was the only one dining in, but that there was a steady stream of folks coming in for orders. I visited during Caribana 2023 after founding on Yelp. I was looking for a place with good doubles and roti. I'm plant based so I had two doubles and ordered the all veggie roti to go (consisted of spinach, pumpkin, and Chana). My husband and friend both had the boneless chicken roti. What else: Ali want are doubles. If you haven't had Doubles before, you're missing out. They're a Caribbean specialty, they're spicy a.f., they're vegetarian, and they're absolutely wonderful. They have chick peas aka Garbanzo beans in them and I have no idea what else. I don't want to know. I just know they're amazing. There are plenty of places in Brooklyn to get them, none better than Royal Bakery. In Buffalo, Michelle's makes them amazingly. And here in Toronto, Ali's is the place to go. They are absolutely perfect here. Wet, spicy, delicious. And of course dirt cheap (less than $3 Canadian and very filling). The guy who runs this place is really friendly too and his prices are great. There are lots of other amazing things on the menu such as Rotis, and you may also want to sample their baked goods such as the awesome Currant Roll. Do not miss Ali's, in the best and coolest part of multi-ethnic Toronto. And don't be surprised if you see Ali Campbell of UB40, Ali Son Sheedy, and an Ali Cat here too. Tried this for the first time today and had a horrible experience. We ordered one beef patty, 2 dhalpourie rotis and 2 doubles for delivery and they packaged everything in one large ziplock bag. It arrived in one big soggy inedible mess and the textures of all the food was ruined while the stuffing leaked out into the bag. Everything tasted just okay but the horrible packaging ruined the food for me. I would never order from here again. read more

I saw people writing about this place having food just like mother's rotis. I never had West Indian rotis before, but I swear if I had a West Indian mother, she would make rotis like these. Wow. Super yum! I first walked in thinking, man $13 bucks for this paratha stuff? I don't know if I actually want it. After a several-year hiatus from reviewing, this spot inspired me to start again. Let me just say that this place is the real deal. Don't get me wrong, the ambiance ain't all that. However, it's clean and the staff so so so friendly. I came here on a visit to Toronto and this was my first time coming to a West Indian roti shop. I've had roti before but never like this. We stepped up to the counter and asked the woman behind it for recommendations. She said the goat curry with the paratha. YUMMMMMMM. Of the food we had in Toronto, this was by far the most memorable and delicious. We got a beef patty to start because we were starving. I would save the stomach space for more curry instead. Knowing that Toronto is home to large Caribbean population, I wanted to try some Trinidadian food. What a wonderful introduction!! The cashier did an amazing job of explaining all the different dishes and making recommendations. She even came to check on us during the meal. We had both the goat Dhalpouri and the chicken paratha--so much good food and relatively inexpensive. We couldn't even finish it all! I'd been a devotee of Island Foods since my Trinidadian husband first introduced me to his country's delicacies- roti, doubles, aloo pie- when we first met in 1995. I emigrated to Canada to join him in 1997 and end the cross-border long-distance thing, and since then I've had more Trini food than I can recall, mostly, again, at Island Foods. In 2000 we moved to Calgary for my job and West Indian, never mind Trini, is thin on the ground there, so when I come back to the 6ix (which Drake must have named Toronto in deference to the massive popularity of cricket in the city, right?), I make a beeline for my faves- almost all of which have closed or moved. In the city centre, all of Drupati's, Island Food at Village by the Grange, and Caribbean Roti Palace are no more, so I walked the hour-long walk from my Airbnb to Island Foods.... And it wasn't that good. And they hadn't made the barra for doubles yet. So I finished my meh eggplant and spinach roti and headed the 15 or so minutes to the NW and hit Ali's. I'd never been there before- yes, in 23 years of acquaintance with Trinidadian cuisine, I'd never been here. I wish had got to know Ali's way back when. The doubles are astoundingly good! And big! I got two for $2.75 apiece and that's dinner. I'd love to try more of the menu- and it's a big menu. read more

Came here for the first time today. My west-Indian esthetician told me that this was the one place close to downtown where I could get authentic Trinidadian food. I am east Indian but I have had my fair share of west Indian foods, especially when I lived up in Scarborough. This place is definitely comparable to Drupatis and Mona's Roti up in Scarborough. Doubles are very very good. Moist fluffy fried dough, with delicious chana in between. The pepper sauce used in the chana is excellent. The roti was delicious as well (chana and spinach), and huge! I ate a quarter of the roti and one double, I was stuffed afterwards! This place is cheap, quick, hearty, and delicious. There also was ample seating, and friendly staff. My only qualm was that it was very messy to eat, it would have been nice if they wrapped the roti and the doubles better. The lady did give me a container afterwards to hold the roti, perhaps they could offer that to clients to begin with. Overall a great place for a quick, delicious bite (and leftovers)! I think this was one of the first west Indian places I tried in toronto when I was a kid. I guess I always liked it cuz we have the same name :) I really like the doubles here and also the goat roti, but any of the rotis are great. They don't put as much filler potatoes in the roti like other places so I really like that, and the goat is boneless too. The doubles are decent but I'm still having trouble finding a doubles place that I love. They've got their own hot sauce which is pretty damn tasty. read more

The chicken roti had absolutely no salt flavour so they definitely forgot to put salt. The roti was dry as others have mentioned and I hate that they don't peel the potato in the roti. Totally disappointed with this place. I'm from Ottawa and we don't have any decent West Indian restaurants only catering operations. Whenever visit Toronto I stock up with large orders to get my fix. We were staying down near Rogers centre so the nearest joint was Ali's. I ordered duck curry, chicken fried rice, chicken chow mein, roti and goat curry. The duck curry and goat were acceptable and mostly authentic (yes I'm a born Guyanese). However the fried rice and chow mein were honestly the worst. The fried rice had far too much 5 spice lots a veggies hardly any soy sauce and didn't taste like typical West Indian fried rice. The noodles were the same concoction of veggies and noodles that's it. Normally you these two dishes would be more on the Chinese side with similar sauce. If I would have checked the order before I left I wouldn't have accepted and paid for it. read more

So I've been reluctant to try out this roti shop because the exterior is more reminiscent of a Subway sandwich shop than a Caribbean restaurant. I've come to realize that because I learned to love roti sitting on the kitchen floor of the Trinidadian lady next door when I was 5 years old, I don't think good roti can come from any place that doesn't approximate that experience. Ali's West Indian Roti Shop proved me wrong. Really wrong. Even if I take off points for not having hole-in-the-wall street cred and preparing the food out of the sight of diners who want to know what's going on with their food, I have to rave about how good this roti is! A perfect dahlpuri wrap with that wonderful yellow stuff underneath (the friendly lady behind the counter told me this was split peas). Nicely textured and flavoured curry filling that seems to be seasoned for Canadians, but would easily be elevated by the addition of some hot pepper sauce (Grace, of course!). Ample serving sizes meant two chicken rotis fed four people back at my house and Ali's seems to have figured out how to put together this delicious package without grease soaking through to the paper bag. Like the other roti purveyors on the block, Ali's runs a clean shop and if you can get past that feeling that you're at Harvey's or Subway, then you can enjoy roti while looking at starving artist sale oil paintings of a vaguely Caribbean landscape. Really great hole in the wall roti shop along the bustling, integrated, and variety-filled strip of Queen Street West. You can't (as far as I know) get Indo-Caribbean food in Chicago so my fiance and I were craving a double or roti as soon as we landed in Toronto for New Year's Weekend. The storefront itself is deceptive because the inside is rather large, with plenty of seating. Together we got the beef and chicken roti, separately assuming we could each stomach our own. We were both way off as the portions of the roti are as other reviews state - hefty - but delicious. The curry is well spiced, with just enough kick where you can still taste the meat and the roti shell is perfect. Customer service here is friendly and attentive. More importantly, the product was great for the price and quickly prepared. I can't compare this to nearby Bacchus but I can certainly say that Ali's is as good as any other roti I've had. read more

HOLY SHT THESE TRINI DOUBLES ARE OFF THE CHAIN! I cant handle it, the cravings are worse than being a heroin addict! I want those doubles in my mouth every second of the day. The way they prepare them is so unreal its like no other double that i have had before. Lightly crisp on the outside tender in the middle with chickpeas that are curried perfectly and too top it all off they have the most UNREAL TAMARIND sauce for them!!!!!
