If I could give Chubby's more than 5 stars, I would. My husband and I drive from Rochester, NY to Toronto regularly, and Chubby's is one of the main reasons. We make a point to stop here at least every few months and are already talking about coming even more often because the food is that good. On this visit, we ordered the oxtail stew with rice and peas, curry goat, fried plantains, and a housemade nonalcoholic ginger beer. Everything was absolutely delicious. The oxtail was tender and flavorful, the curry goat was packed with rich spices, and the fried plantains were the perfect sweet addition to the meal. The standout for me was the housemade nonalcoholic ginger beer. It was hands down the best ginger beer I have ever had and is something I look forward to every visit. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the service is always excellent, and the overall vibe makes the experience even better. Chubby's is the definition of comfort food done right. This was my 1st visit to Toronto and it was a do over for my wife's birthday. After a little research, I found many very positive reviews. After that, I really sold it to my wife and she was excited. We initially arrived at Chubby's and there was only bar seating available. As luck would have it, it was raining that Wednesday evening . I called just after 6:30 pm to see if we needed a reservation and the hostess said we didn't. We get there not 30 minutes later and there is only bar seating. Hearing that, my wife was highly disappointed and so was I. Quit frankly, I was going to go next door to Cafe Renee. But Zac was not having that. He checked a couple of times and found us a table. I was so relieved and my wife continued her enthusiasm. Zac showed us to our table and I swear I attempted to pay for accommodating us and he refused. The lovely Valentina was our server and she was delightful because she understood pace and flow. We ordered the Saltfish Fritters which were a great introduction to the restaurant. I had multiple Buffalo Soldier cocktails and my wife had multiple Rum Punches. We then ordered Jerk Chicken and Jerk Shrimp with rice and peas as our meal. Both were delicious. I also had a serving of plantains, and they were the best plantains I had ever eaten. I was amazed at how light the crunch was on the outside. A skill in itself! Finally, we had the Bread Pudding for dessert. Again...perfection. Zac was phenomenal and I appreciated his effort. This ambiance in this place was very inviting, has a local feel with an elevated flavor. i made reservation for 2 on a Friday night. For our first night in Toronto for a girls' trip, we had dinner at Chubby's given the good reviews and me mentioning wanting to try the various Caribbean spots during our stay. The decor gives island vibes with the wooden furniture and tranquil color choice for decor. Staff were all pretty helpful, with you waiter being pretty attentive. For my drink, I ordered the rum punch which was pretty good in the balance of flavorand alcohol content. In terms of food, the portions for my entree (Oxtail Stew) was a little smaller than I thought but or actually worked out well and was enough. The oxtail was cooked down, well seasoned and tender, but I felt like I got a lot of pieces that were just bone or pretty fatty. The other food/Likkle bites I ordered to share with one of my friends were also very good. The Pepper Shrimp definitely had a heavy kick of spice to it and tasty. I really enjoyed the Saltfish (Cod) Fritters - they were tasty, had a good chutney to go with it. The plantains were cooked perfectly so that they stayed soft. A girlfriend and I stopped by this place after an event which wasn't too far away where the drinks left a lot to be desired. We came for the drinks, and as a bonus really enjoyed the food. I neglected to take a photo of my drink but it did not disappoint. I ordered chubbys signature rum punch and the only disappointing thing was the size of the drink. I asked the server if it came in a different size because for $16 I was expecting a lot out of this drink which was tiny imho. Turns out that with 2 types of rum including the world famous overproof rum the size was just right. I staggered just a little when I got up to head home. Complete miracle I didn't fall down the stairs if I'm being totally honest. Sooooo if you can't handle a good strong Caribbean rum punch perhaps choose a mocktail. I forgot to mention that the establishment is a cute 2 story house with a very warm and friendly vibe. The main bar and some seating is downstairs. There is a second bar and what looked to be an outside patio on the second floor but we were seated inside. Food wise we started with some ackee and sailfish bites from their likkle bites menu. It wasn't something I had had previously but it was very tasty and delicious and could have been a meal all by itself. We then each ordered our main meals. I had the jerk pork - because there really isn't anything better and I was not disappointed. It was a huge portion so I ended up taking most of it home. My friend had the jerk shrimp and really enjoyed it as well. We of course had some fried plantains on the side. Overall a great experience I can definitely see myself returning soon. read more

In Toronto visiting friends an and they said we were going to the best jerk chicken place in Toronto. Went in a group of 3 and ended up there during their Happy Hour. Decided to eat inside as so hot and humid still outside. Opted for several dishes: goat curry, jerk chicken, jerk shrimp, saltfish fritters and plantains. Tiniest wings I ever saw in my life. These poor babies didn't even make it past puberty. They were also overcooked and dry. Additionally, the wings were supposed to be Buy 1 Get 1 Free via DoorDash, but they only sent one ofer of wings. The rice and peas had ZERO flavor. And the greens had absolutely no seasoning either. They were ok with reducing the party size as a few friends couldn't make it anymore. There was a brunch prie fixe menu but we opted to do a la carte and ordered the jerk chicken and oxtail stew. We also got 2 rum punches since they were $12 CAD which is a price that does not exist for such a quality of drink in the US. These rum punches were strong! The jerk chicken was flavorful and packs a bit of spiciness. Unlike other reviews, the chicken was actually not dry. There was also rice and beans that were decent. The oxtail stew is quite hearty and the meat falls right off which is great. Food portions were on the lighter side but I appreciate quality over quantity. I came to Chubby's based off of many tiktok recommendations. It was my first time ever having Jamaican food. I had been meaning to try oxtails for quite a while, and I made an excellent choice starting my Jamaican food journey here. I arrived real late one weeknight not long before they closed, and they were gracious to serve me. I'm not sure if it was the manager, but he had a very serious demeanor. He was apprehensive to seat me, but said if I knew what I was ready order, he could take me in. I already knew what I wanted, so he sat me down. The male light skinned server was very friendly and kind despite the circumstances. He put in my order of oxtails and rice & peas, with a Rum punch. The ambiance was very nice, homey, almost. It had a welcoming and inviting vibe. If I could, I would've stayed longer, and ordered more food/drinks. The food was fantastic. The oxtails were saturated with flavor. The meat was very tender and melted in my mouth. The rice & peas were pretty standard (rice & beans). It balanced the meal well. The drink, was drinking, lol. Chubby was recommended by a local friend and it was one of the best meals we had! Unfortunately the only reservation we could get on a Friday night (Labor Day Weekend 2024) was at 9:45pm and it took another 30 mins for the 4 of us to get seated. The hostess didn't seem apologetic, but luckily our waitress was super friendly and completely made up for it. She advised us that weekends are always busy, and it's better to visit Mon-Thurs if possible. Hubby and I shared: Salt Fish Fritters - these fried balls were amazing Medium Jerk half Chicken - juicy, tender, and delicious! Jerk Pork - just as good, but the chicken is the winner. The coconut flavored rice and the coleslaw were excellent also. Our friends also got Curry Goat and Oxtail which they enjoyed as well. Everything was wonderful and our waitress was super friendly. I got the jerk chicken, usually any other Jamaican place it will come with rice and peas but this place charges an extra 7 dollars for rice and peas and the jerk chicken medium size is 25 dollars, it's a decent size but I still think this place is a ripoff. The service was pretty quick, the chicken was tender and a good Smokey taste but the rice was dry they should put more coconut milk. The coleslaw had a good crunch and good acidity, to be very honest there's a lot better Jamaican food out there than this place.
