Mikhala Iverson is simply the most outstanding tour guide I have ever had. I am a teacher, and I brought my group of 26 high school students, and we had an absolutely outstanding experience! She provided an air conditioned bus with an ice chest of water, and the REAL black history of the city of New Orleans. She was engaging, magnetic, and FUN without being flippant about the reverence of the history. Unapologetically Black. Mikala took 6 of us (plus 2 stragglers) on an oral journey of Black history in New Orleans. Within two locations, you're amazed by the griot stories of "our" HIStory. Two hours are spent in Louis Armstrong Park, as she connects the tour participants to the #facts about Black New Orleans. After a stint through the park, we then board her van for a short tour of the Treme, et al. We end on the "Black Block," a block of Black-owned businesses. It was great to hear the little known and untold stories of the African contributions, that actually built this nation, NOLA included. read more

Unfortunately, this was the worst tour I've ever taken. The guide appeared to have limited knowledge of Black New Orleans history and spent much of the time sharing her personal political views and criticized Black Krewes. Her delivery was often disorganized and hard to follow. We spent most of the time at Congo Square and Louis Armstrong Park, but the information shared was superficial. For example, she pointed out statues of historical jazz figures but offered no context. The only other stop was a short bus ride to a Black-owned bookstore, which felt rushed and was the final stop. Because the tour fell so far short of what we hoped for, we booked another tour with a different Black-owned company the next day; that tour was excellent. There are several Black-owned tour companies in New Orleans run by knowledgeable locals but sadly, All Bout Dat Tours is not one of them. I strongly encourage future visitors to look at other options to support Black-owned tour companies and learn why and how New Orleans is Black culture. read more

Somehow stumbled across this tour and it was the highlight of our trip!!! It was powerfully educational, soulfully uplifting and a reminder that we must come together for change. A friendly prompt for us to rethink how we show up in the world, and what we can do to strengthen community and heal together. Mikhala spent a good amount of time with us in Louis Armstrong Park, giving us a run down of the NOLA history, then that history of the park. Then we hopped into her van, where she took us on a short driving tour to Treme, followed by a walk down Bayou street. Stopped off at Cupcake Fairies- smelled amazing inside. So many tasty baked goods- we got a chicken salad sandwich. Then crossed the street to Community Book Center- also awesome! Left with three new books. So glad we did, definitely added to the experience of such a wonderful, unique and informative tour lead by a non sugar coating sister. It was such a pleasure to go on the Walking Black Heritage & Culture Tour during my first visit to New Orleans. Mikhala was a warm and welcoming tour guide. She was extremely knowledgeable about the area & history and I appreciated how she did not mince any words, while also giving the group a list of resources and footnotes that we could refer back to later. She taught the true history of the city and didn't shy away from some of the more unsavory and unpopular history of enslavement in the city. We used this company for the combo Swamp Tour and Whitney Plantation tour. NEVER AGAIN! Basically, the four of us paid for $550 for something that would have cost $350 at the most using Uber, which I later found out our driver drove for Uber/Lyft. The tickets for both are $50. At the time of booking this tour, we were told that we would be transported in a "luxury suburban", but instead was picked up in a crossover vehicle, which provided an comfortable ride for 4 people not including the driver. The driver was pleasant, but provided no historical or location perspectives during the drive, which is about 45 minutes from New Orleans. The company provided NOTHING that made the experience unique or special; therefore, I can not see any reason paying the additional charge for their services. Po boy sandwiches were included in the price, which was a joke! They were cold and there were no napkins or utensils to add the dressing (lettuce and tomatoes), AND we had to fix our sandwiches in the back of the vehicle. I passed on lunch and just grabbed chips from the Whitney Plantation. The tours were great and I would do them again especially the Whitney Plantation tour, BUT save your money and time and book with another tour company or just schedule the tours yourself and either rent a car or using Uber or Lyft. This is basically what Mikhala did. My friend who booked the tour contacted the owner to express our displeasure. The owner said that we should have refused the ride and contacted her, so she could resolve the issue. As the owner, she was responsible for sending the vehicle, so why would we call her when the tour started at 10:00 AM and the driver arrived at 8:45 AM. This seems like a backwards approach to the situation. Why not just send the correct vehicle to start? The owner took no responsibility for anything! I am always excited to support black owned businesses, but not at the expense of quality and service. read more
