Omg, exact same experience as everyone else. I'm so glad we aren't the only ones. The owner rushed from behind the counter to stop us at the door, asked "can I help you?" We said we were just walking by and wanted to browse. He asked "well, are you interested in comics?" with a really rude tone. We said yes and he said "Well, I was actually stepping out to lunch." And ushered us out. He then sat on the stoop and read a book. I thought it might have been a homophobic or racist thing, but judging from other reviews, this guy is just crazy, idk how he stays open. read more

Awesome shop that couldn't have a cooler owner. He may not be bending over backwards and kissing customer's ass, but he's a very intelligent and friendly guy that is very well read both in comics and in regular literature. Great place to grab some comics and some good conversation. read more

My girlfriend and I went here to browse and buy some comics. We were literally in the store for 2 minutes when the owner told us he "had to rearrange things" and was closing down the store. My girlfriend already had found a comic she was going to buy, but put it back because the guy was so rude. He never budged from his spot and left the door wide open for other business. This place would get a 0 if there was an option to, and we will never be returning. My husband and I have recently gotten back into comics and we have been hitting local stores trying to find back issues and things and All In A Dream was on our list to go to next to check it out. First off we came a long way (30+ mins) just to check this place out. So we expected to stay for a little bit and go through the store and look for back issues that we needed. Secondly as we came in the worker/owner (?) didnt even acknowledge our presents. I get that not every one is friendly but no way to bring in new customers. Third as we were walking around it felt like we were being watching and stared at. Never have I felt so uncomfortable in a place. Fourthly, me as a woman, felt uncomfortable with the R rated magazines and comics just out with no covers on or picture blocks of any kind. Made me feel so uneasy about the store. Just didn't feel safe, even with my husband there, and that plus their location would also never make me want to come back.... Last and final shove over the cliff for these people, as my husband and I were going through the back issues, I had finally found the last comic that I needed to complete the series I have been looking for....and then what happens....the owner/worker comes over and tells everyone in the store that we all have to get out now. 3 times he says this in a matter of about 30 seconds. And there were 3-4 other people in the store and we all were kinda shocked that this was happening. So I asked the guy if I could buy the ONE comic I had in my hand and he said NO....Now WHY would you say no to a paying customer????? I get that were not regulars and this was the first time we had been there but seriously it was so incredibly rude of him and he will never be getting our business again. We have our own little neighborhood shop that we go to and from the first minute there were very welcoming. read more

I have tried really hard to like this place, especially since I am an avid collector and live 5 blocks away and can't reach the other comic book store in town until Saturdays. However, I have finally given up. The staff of ANY comic book store essentially has ONE job to do ALL WEEK- open on time on Wednesday and have new comics in stock and ready for purchase. Sounds easy, right? Not at All In A Dream. The sign on the door says they open at noon. Well, I know by now that they don't. I showed up at 2 on a Wednesday and waited around until 3:15, and half of the new comics STILL weren't out. The owner and his helper were too busy eating lunch in the middle of their stocking process. I finally had to give up, leave, and get the rest of my comics somewhere else nearly a week later. Do yourself a favor and go to Mile High Comics, even if you can't get there until later in the week-- they will still have what you are looking for. read more

Fuck this place! As someone trying to get into comics this shop totally killed my interest. I brought some out of town family to this shop to look for Pokémon cards and maybe get a few comics that I was interested in. The guy at the store ushered us out the door after we were browsing for too long saying "I have work to do." Your store isn't closing, I have no idea where to start, and you were an unhelpful prick! Owner/Clerk was extremely rude and very unapproachable. I went into his shop with some friends to pick up some new issue while on a trip. I figured I'd check out some short boxes he had too, but as I started he kicked us all out after being there for only 3 minutes!! Didn't state why we all had to leave until we were out the door and then passive aggressively told us that we were putting cups all over his merchandise. Only one of us had an empty water cup and that was put on a dusty shelf for a few seconds while they looked at comics? State that you don't allow full/empty beverages before we enter and get a better attitude. Will never be back, will never recommend, will never forget. read more

So I read these 4 star reviews such as (paraphrase)"It's really too bad when people post negative reviews about such a wonderful place" or "I've been coming here since ___ and this is like heaven". Um, no. Sorry that isn't how it rolls out in reality when I walk in, cash in pocket and am browsing only to be tossed out with 6 other younger folks (30s?) as the owner is acting all fidgety and it is 1:15 pm. More interesting when I walk to get java two doors down only to see he is open again. Huh. I ask if he is actually open since there was this strange abrupt closure and he says oddly "Not for you internet people". Not exactly sure what that means. Cash is Cash. Nail's in the coffin when I look online and see the similar track record this dude has over time despite some "rescue" reviews. Better stores, better selection elsewhere as well as simple human decency. read more

I've been going to this place for years and, after reading the other reviews, I thought I'd put in my two cents and explain why All in a Dream is the best store in Denver and why anyone who disagrees with me is wrong/a war criminal. All in a Dream has a great assortment of comic books, plus a book section in the back. Most of it is sci fi/fantasy of varying quality, but there is also a select "litrachure" section stocked with great classics. The guys here know what they're doing. This is a local, independently-owned shop. In their time, the staff have had to deal with the likes of the Mafia, the gangs, the homeless, and perhaps worst of all, wise-ass kids from the high school across the street. So, please excuse them if they don't jump out from behind the counter and perform a Japanese tea ceremony for you. No matter how much lip-service people pay to wanting an "authentic local experience", a lot of them seem to be nonplussed when they actually get it. Yes, All in a Dream is a little hardboiled. If you want cloying, obsequious service, go to Applebee's. If you're the kind of comic book geek that wears a Manowar T-shirt and regales clerks with stories of your last D&D session (while he rolls his eyes and listens with polite indifference), go to Mile High. This is a community shop that reflects the values of its community (namely curmudgeonliness). What you get here, besides the fantastic selection and knowledgeable staff, is a relationship with truly interesting local characters. Try forming a relationship with the waitress at Applebee's - it doesn't work. Believe me, I've tried. The dream of every small business owner is to be beholden to no man, so don't expect a warm reception if you come in demanding the kind of slavish devotion you might be used to at your neighborhood Bennigans. Treat the staff as equals and expect years of engaging stories, amusing anecdotes, and a genuine desire to please. After all, there's a reason my friends and I have been coming here since the days we wore denim jackets. So, if you appreciate personality and a real sense of community, All in a Dream is the place for you. If you're a self-important crybaby... well, maybe you should consider somewhere other than East Colfax. read more

Unfortunately, it's been my experience that the negative reviewers are right about this place. i went in, browsed around, brought a couple of books. The owner was drinking beer with some friends right in the open.[which does not bother me. i only mention it because of what happened the next day.] I got home, read one of the comics and found that the last page was torn out. Needless to say, i went back to tell him about it. He flew into a rage. He accused me of shoplifting. He started getting in my face. I said: 'wait a minute... if you thought i had stolen something, why didn't you say something about it last night as i was buying the comics ?' He went on & on like a madman, i looked at his friends [the same buddies that had been drinking in the shop with him the night before.] & they just stayed quiet--looking as dismayed & embarrassed as I. So, I said: ' I think you've got me confused with someone else.' He then continued spouting all kinds of craziness: at one point saying 'i know i shouldn't have been drinking in the shop last night ..... Maybe i'm wrong about you stealing....maybe i'll owe you an apology someday'. I was just stunned at his ravings [& a little afraid i was going to have to defend myself]. So finally i said to him: 'do i need to get the police? ' At this point he was shaking, then he chuckled: 'go ahead, haha!' Then, miraculously he went to the till, & handed me my refund. Perplexed, i handed him the comic-book. He, bugged-eyed & bearing his teeth, immediately & violently ripped the book to pieces in my face. i walked home confused & a little unnerved. This guy has some serious issues[pun intended]. That was my 1st & last time in that place. read more

I wanted to get a specific book so I called this store and asked if they had it. Whoever I spoke to told me that they did. I told the guy my wife would be in later that day to pick it up and he said no problem. My wife went there and told whoever was working "My husband called about a comic book and you told him you had it" but before she could even finish her sentence the guys says "No one called me today". So she just asks him if he has the book. Without even looking for it he tells her "Nope". She then repeats that her husband had called and was told it was in and he proceeds to tell her that she doesn't know what she's talking about, she's obviously confused, doesn't know anything about comics and is probably lost. Real great service, this guy must not like selling his products. I would highly encourage people to go somewhere else for comic books. read more

It is really kind of sad that there are so many negative reviews for this little comic shop. I have been here a handfull of times over the last year, and I have never had a negative experience. My very first time I came here was last summer, and even though the power had been out for a few hours, the shop owner was there, and happily let my boyfriend and I browse around and purchase some comics. He wasn't rude, or pushy, or antsy to get us out of there. He helped me track down what I was looking for, and took down some requests to keep an eye out for. He definitely admitted that he doesn't have the best memory, and there was a possibility that he would forget my requests, but at least he was honest. I thought it was fantastic that he kept the shop open that afternoon despite having no power. This place is not perfect by any means, but it does deserve a chance. The organization is a little befuddling, the shop is always super stuffy/hot, and the collection certainly isn't too sizable, but I would suggest taking a trip, with an open mind. read more

All in a Dream is my neighborhood comic shop, but I would still go there even it weren't within walking distance of my house. The selection is great and easy to navigate. The owner, who is usually rocking some Neil Young or classic rock, is always super laid back and friendly and happy to help, and the space has a cozy, neighborhood vibe. And if you're a regular, the owner will often give you pretty decent deals. read more

DON'T BUY FROM THIS JERK!!!! I had been to this store a few times & always liked their selection. I was willing to deal with the fact that the store has always had unreliable hours. But this last time I went I was in the store for about three minutes when the jerk of an owner tells me from the other side of the store in a barely audible voice "Im gonna close now". "Ok?! when will you be back?" no answer, "How long are you leaving for?". Again in a wisper "don't know". What kind of business does this? I always like supporting small business, but I will go to MIle High from now, they might not have the selection but at least they aren't compleate jerks. I see lots of similar reviews here. I have visited MANY a comic store, but this guy's prices and organization is top notch. I like that he is not out to take all your money, and that he is honest in his pricing. I have been to other places that over charge, and i am talking by 75%, it can get out of control sometimes, but he is great, prices are great, atmosphere is one of old books and new comics. I liked the selection that he has, and saw no issues with his demeanor. read more

I walked into this shop. The owner walked away when I asked my question than completely ignored me. Spent the entire time at his counter telling a homeless man the best way to sell his free comics to make some money out of the store. In spite of this treatment I purchased three volume hardcovers priced at $125 each. As I walked out, with my arms full of these very large books, and over 300 dollars poorer, the owner started screaming and cursing at me because I couldn't shut his door. He then followed me to my car on the street still screaming and cursing. He got so close that once I put my books in my car I then warned him about his closeness. That is when the owner started threatening me, and then threatening my children, which I do not have. This man is a lunatic, and even though I plan on purchasing many more hardcover volumes for a collection I am completing, I will never step foot in here again. The man is a menace, and has no idea how close he came today to real trouble. As a military man, and much younger than him, I backed down and left without incident. Hopefully it will be shut down soon, and this man will die of whatever disease has already taken his brain. read more
