I had bought a property little over a year ago and I was looking to get my PMI off which is mortgage insurance and I was looking for somebody everybody was giving me the run-around how they weren't available or whatnot. I chose All Star Appraisals based on the Yelp reviews I read. My sister found other appraisers through referrals. When I called all of them to get price quotes for 'date of death' appraisals, Gary was the first to respond and the had the most competitive prices; my sister and I agreed to use Gary. Gary asked that I give him the 2 addresses to be appraised prior to his visit to do some preliminary research. On the day of his visit, he and his trainee arrived on time and checked out the first house in 1/2 hour before we made the drive down to the San Clemente house. During the drive, we had a pleasant conversation about the appraisal business and the increasing education requirements for the trainee. After about 3/4 hours of inspecting and photos I told Gary it would be ideal if I could get a 'low side' appraisal. Gary said he would do the appraisal in accordance with industry's standards and guidelines and could not make a 'low' or 'high' appraisal. Oh well, I tried but I accepted his honesty and professionalism to not comply with my request. Gary then wanted to look at other properties in the area he had looked up based on the address I had given previously. It turns out I gave him the address of my townhouse in the area and not the single family house that was to be appraised-my bad. He said he would have to come back to San Clemente on Saturday to do his work and also take his family to the beach to make it a dual purpose trip. I felt bad that my mistake would cause him to make an extra 120 mile round trip and offered to pay him for my error. He graciously declined my offer and said not to worry. This really impressed me and made me feel confident I had chosen the right person and that the Yelp reviews were accurate, I received my reports a week later and no other charges were incurred. Gary is awesome! It was a Saturday morning and we had just closed the sale of our parents' home and found out from our accountant that we needed a 2009 retro appraisal for tax purposes. My family and I were in the process of purchasing a single family residence in Altadena, CA. The listing agent also represented us (buyers). First time I utilized the appraisal firm for my families property in South Pasadena. The most recent engagement was for my investment property in Sylmar which is currently under contract. Hired Gary for the ARV (after repair value) estimate consultation. All aspects of the transaction were great except timing. During our phone conversation, he mentioned that their schedule is generally booked 2 weeks in advance and wasn't able to visit my property until then.
