I took my car in thinking I was going to have to spend at least 500$ on a single part. The throttle body. Steve was in contact through the whole process. I ended up having a loose wire and loose vacuum hose. My car was ready the next morning. I ended up paying for only an oil change. I will be going to All Star for all of my cars needs in the future. Word of advice. If your mechanic saves you a couple 100$ or 1,000$. Pls be sure to tip them. You can't go wrong with All Star Automotive. read more

Perhaps the best experience I've had with business, ever, regardless of industry. My girlfriend was in a car accident a year and a half ago that was fairly minor except for the massive headaches it caused: the police transcribed the license plate incorrectly, and my girlfriend was passed from insurance company to insurance company for months with each denying that they covered the at-fault vehicle. After one helpful insurance rep realized the mistake and she finally was able to get her car fixed, it was still left with a horrible shake when the car reached 50+MPH. She's been to FOUR different auto shops--2 back when lived in Boston , 1 in North Carolina, and 1 here in Gainesville-- to get this fixed and each has failed. Tire balancing, replaced bent rims, repeat tire balancing; nothing worked. On advice from the last place that balanced the tires, we decided to get it looked at for frame damage, so I took it to All Star. For $50 they found the glaringly obvious problems that had been making the car unbearable to drive for 18 months. They switched out a bad lug-nut, removed a broken, unbalanced hubcap (embarrassed that I didn't think of that), and rotated the tires for good measure. It drives smoother than ever now. There's one more detail that really elevated this experience: When we both went in to pick up her car, the mechanic (I should have asked for his name) spoke directly to her, not me, about her car. This is a low expectation, but one that has so often not been met by our mechanics in the past. It's her car, and she knows just as much about cars as I do, so we both really appreciated this all-too-rare demonstration of respect. read more

I stopped by to ask about a repair since this shop was on my way to work and I saw all of the positive reviews. I walked in and told them about my car and was told by Steve that he didn't want his name attached to that particular make/model. Okay, cool. Just tell me you don't work on that car and I'll be on my way. Then he tells me to check for a recall because he is certain the code I mentioned would be on the recall list since my car definitely has a giant recall list. I tell him the only recall on the car is for a Bluetooth issue and he says I should check again. I tell him there are a few reviews like this online and he seems indifferent. He gives a few more smug remarks, tells me I should have bought X make/model instead, and I go on my way. Basically, it will be a very unpleasant interaction for you depending on your car. If it's not along your route like it was for me, I recommend calling ahead to avoid this shop wasting your time. I fully respect a shop not wanting to work on a particular vehicle, whatever their reason, which is why this is not a 1 star review. I wouldn't have left a review if Steve had just refused to work on it as it is his business. I always get worried that I'm going to get ripped off doing anything on my car in Gainesville. I'm a girl who really doesn't know anything about cars so it would be easy for someone to take advantage of that. All Star Automotive is honest and they don't try to scam you. The first time I went, I only needed an oil change and they told me that I really needed a new tire and it would be dangerous to continue driving on it. They don't even do that there so I knew for sure they were not trying to sell me something I didn't need. I even called Steve the next day and asked for his recommendations on places to get a tires because I knew I could trust him. I just went a second time and I was worries because I had a hair appointment really soon that I needed to get to. Even though they were super busy (like today) they got it done quickly and with a ton of time for me to get to my appt. We have taken several cars there over the past 18 months. In each case, they diagnosed the specific issue and got the work done right the first time. In one case, they spent substantial time (at no cost) diagnosing an AC issue and referred us to another local garage to deal with a failed compressor and electrical issues. It is really refreshing to encounter such honest service. They may be fairly small but they do great work. Dont bother going anywhere else first. read more

After being screwed over by the morons at Jiffy Lube, we had to have our old diesel towed here because there was air in the lines and the filter wasn't primed right. We had called at the last minute and they agreed to fix it up. They ended up being able to get the car started within minutes, and they didn't even charge us. After such a crap-fest of a day, I wanted to give everyone there a big sloppy kiss. I wish I could give All Star Automotive ten stars, they deserve all of the excellent reviews they recieve! Being a female college student, I was wary going to an automobile shop without being able to directly consult my dad. Steve and his crew immediately put me at ease - they are friendly, polite, service oriented, and are truly looking to find the best solution for you and your car. I have now been here twice and each time has been an all around wonderful experience. The biggest concern with car shops is being bamboozled, paying for things you don't need, and never being the wiser. This has never been the case at All Star - each time I've gone in and had them look at my car they've done so completely free of charge! My car is on the brink and would have required over $1,200 worth of work. Steve listened to me and my situation: I am moving and am planning on getting a new car in a handful of months. Instead of suggesting I fix my car to make until then, he strongly advised me to look into a new car as soon as possible because repairing it would not do much to prolong the inevitable. My Astro Van broke while in Micanopy FL, a long away from home. Consulted Yelp because I didn't know any mechanics in the area. Had it towed the 20 miles up there one fine Gainesville evening and they had it done by the end of the next day. Distributor and coil fail. Cost me a little less than $600 which I was happy to pay. I don't know repair rates but this seemed entirely fair because the van is 1999 vintage with almost 200,000 miles, runs really well as I'm traveling around the country, but, you know, stuff happens. I'm just glad it wasn't anything more serious. I feel like some peace of mind was included in that price. Now, about two months later I was staying in Brooksville FL and decided to take a day trip to Tampa. Got about 20 miles down the freeway and all of a sudden it started missing big time then quit. Long story short, it seemed like it was related to the previous ignition problem so I had it towed back to All Star, got there at about 9 am and they had it fixed by about noon. Under warranty. I missed a day in Tampa but it ain't going anywhere and I'll have a good running van to get me there when the occasion arises. Thanks Steve and staff! read more

Imagine finding an independent auto repair shop that you know is reliable and trustworthy. I'm from Titusville. My Suburban front end was making all kinds of odd noises. If you ask around in Gainesville, expect lots of people to recommend this place. The price on the oil change is really great: $25. The guy is friendly. So why 2 stars? Well, I came in there to get my spark plugs replaced. First the guy said it would cost around $105. Then he did a real estimate and said $250. Then the next day I get a call and he says it'll cost $350. I thought that was crazy so I called the DEALERSHIP and they quoted a price of $269. So if you are charging nearly $100 more than the dealership, you know this is not a place to take a car for anything beyond a cheap oil change. (yes, these guys are better than Jiffy Lube) There are a couple more reasonable local shops in Gainesville to take your car for anything beyond an oil change. read more
