They are aged, rustic cottages on Big Shag Lake. As long as you don't need all the acoutrements of home or an upscale hotel and manage your expectations of a cabin in the woods, you can certainly have a terrific visit. Cons - furnishings, bedding, linens and housewares are all a bit tired and worn. No A/C can be unpleasant if you happen to stay during an unusual hot spell. water smells of iron, you share space with spiders, and the shower is tiny and dark. Pros - Quiet setting on lakefront property, rowboat included, motor and paddleboat available for rent, firepit and grill available, property set way off the road so the only traffic you'll hear going by is on the lake. Lots of windows allow you to take in the outdoors and a passing breeze. Gary and Su and very gracious hosts and work hard to ensure guest satisfaction. Molly, the resident dog, is one of the best behaved dogs we have ever seen and very lovable. Deer sightings, raspberries and blueberries are plentiful. Sunrise from the cottages is breathtaking, and with a brief drive to the other side of the lake you can enjoy an equally pleasing sunset. Proximity to Marquette, the airport, Pictured Rocks, numerous waterfalls and other areas to explore make it a great central location. I had originally booked a VRBO but with added guests I need something different and found these cabins for half the price! The cabin itself was beautiful and peaceful! From the great use of space, the radiant in-floor heating on the main level, and the personal fire pit, to the beautiful hot tub, this place was perfect. Derek was the best host I've ever experienced. Accommodated all of our needs, and was very quick to respond to any questions. Derek made SURE our stay exceeded expectations. We WILL be back and I am already looking forward to it!

If you want to make epic family memories, look no further…read more I am not certain I can iterate the whole experience here but I am going to try: I'd like to begin by saying this was not our first time using a vacation rental; we have done so many times. Each experience through reading reviews, researching the property, and communicating with the property owner has been worthy of five stars. However, I'd give this one ten stars if I could. From the beginning, the communication and organization of our reservation, planning, and execution were easy, comfortable, and trustworthy. Upon arrival, we were blown away at the property, the facility, and OMG- the views! We had a group of six adults and seven kids and there was more than enough room. It is only 30 minutes to Marquette where we found a bit of a foodie-scene, shopping, hiking and mountain biking as well as any necessities you might need- Target, Walmart, Walgreens, etc. The mountain biking is remarkable - one of three areas we turned pedals while we were there. A half hour in the other direction you find Munising, Grand Island, and Pictured Rocks which you can research on your own, there is too much to tell of here but we hiked an out-of-this-world waterfall, and biked some super fun trails with something for the whole family. So, back to the Lodge... If you are coming from an apartment in the city, a farmhouse in the country, or living in your van, this place feels like home. Why? Because they have it all. Anything you are looking for in the kitchen, a legit coffee maker, comfortable beds (yes, comfortable beds), cozy corners and window beds for reading, trees for hammocks, deck space, a beach, a theater, a sauna, kayaks and paddle boards for rent (way fun!)... it's all there! Oh, and if you are a sunrise person, they have 'em. Maybe you are a sunset person, they have those too! North-facing onto Lake Superior, every time you look out it is a postcard-view! We will be back!

I ordered a tap beer from a Michigan brewery--it was quite good. To eat I decided to try their take on a whitefish sandwich (something I had at a number of other restaurants as I toured the UP). This one was the most unique in their use of bread and butter pickles for crunch and acid. I found it a bit messy but tasty. My companion (who chose a burger instead) did not care for them at all on his sandwich. They do have a unique taste. Enjoy if you like them, or ask the kitchen to adjust the toppings. Which I would hope they get right--unlike my fries. I specifically asked for regular fries but my plate came with sweet potato fries. When the server checked in I called it to her attention and she said she would get me regular fries right away. Well, they never came. When she brought the checks I pointed out the error again. She did apologize and took a few bucks off the bill. I don't know if she was to blame or if the kitchen dropped the ball. At least she what she could to atone for the goof. (Also worth noting, there was an error on my companion's bill that needed correcting too.) So, be sure that your order and check are right! Beyond these glitches, it was okay.

They called it a queen, but it looked tiny in that large BR. Overall a good value for the money.
