The residents are warm, there are just enough of them (over 100) to pick and choose friends that share common interests -- whether it be movies, religious services, walking club, bingo, poker, art classes, lectures, jewelry making, and the many cultural and off-site excursions (there's a bus) that take place on a weekly or twice weekly basis. The care has been superb, and there are longtime caregivers (Kevin and Sarbjit, and more recently, Ryan and Falle), who have made a significant difference in my mother's life. They're like family. Really, truly, the case. With both, there's continuity, caring, and concern. There's also an on site doctor, Rebecca Conant, who has made a significant difference for us, the adult children, and of course, for my mother. We know we can count on her, and she has the passion and compassion that makes her one of the finest medical professionals (were a family of doctors) in the county. We chose Aegis not only for the atmosphere and how it felt when we toured (food is good, too), but for the many activities and the liveliness / positive vibe of the place. How does it get its beat? It all comes down to a team of individuals, under the helm of Jordana Berliner, who tirelessly and creatively plan activities and events for the residents. We haven't, over the past 12 years, had any regrets. And when there are issues or things that need modification or attention, the general manager (Lee, and now Bill), listens with intention, taking needs seriously and to heart. I recommend touring the place and seeing if it feels right for you, and more importantly, for your loved one.

Also, both of my parents had been dramatically declining for a couple of months, so we needed to act fast to get them new doctors with weekly appointments and consistent caregiving. Aegis Corte Madera is the right place for them. An excellent UCSF doctor visits the community every Tuesday, and she has improved my parents' medical care. She works closely with the nurses onsite, so there is clear communication and implementation. Both parents made trips to Marin Health (hospital), so it was not an overnight success, but their health has stabilized. I have faith in their medical care, and they are in better shape than when they lived in their home. The management is exceptionally welcoming. They made my parents feel like they belonged right away. The GM buddied up to my dad to make him comfortable. The nurses and caregivers display a lot of care and even affection, which helped my mom adapt. The management staff is deeply invested in each individual and will do whatever it takes to settle people into the community. The cost is high, and the entrance/community fee is too high. However, I could not find another option offering medical support, very comfortable living spaces, a sunny apartment with views of the Marin ridgelines, and lively community activities. When I looked at my spreadsheet, the monthly costs for almost all the facilities were very close. I bit the bullet and paid the higher community fee, and we've had an excellent outcome. My previous appointment cost $429, with $224 out of pocket, so this would have meant spending over $400 for a tube of tretinoin because of an administrative mistake. What disappointed me most was the response from the front desk. When I explained my concerns, the lead staff member dismissively said, "This is healthcare," with no empathy and no attempt to help find a reasonable solution. Mistakes happen, but how a practice responds to them matters. Patients should not have to pay for a second visit to correct an error that wasn't their fault. Unfortunately, this experience has caused me to take my business elsewhere.

I asked them specifically what the cost for this would be and was told that it's between $225 and $275 depending whether 1 or 2 ears needed to be cleaned out. The nice receptionist encouraged me to run my insurance and was convinced that I won't be charged after my $83 copayment. Once in the room, the person who saw me introduced herself with her first name giving me the impression that she was a nurse (she was a PA) and she looked for about 5 seconds in both ears each only to inform me that my ears were clear and there was just a little bit of fluid behind one of my ear drums, hence the sensation of it being clogged. That was the end of my extremely short visit, no further care was needed. To my absolute shock a few days later I was charged $575 for this visit, and ended up paying $340 out of pocket. I was furious and had several email exchanges with Carbon's billing department who refused to budge and to reduce my charges -even after the misinformation of the receptionist. I had asked specifically if I could pay out of pocket in cash and that request was declined. Since they had my payment info, they simply ran my card, and there was nothing I could do. I am telling you, you are much better of saying you have no insurance, then they allow you to pay out of pocket and at a much better price! I will never go back to Carbon in Corte Madera. We all know how expensive and broken our health care system is, but this was just so extremely overpriced and uncalled for.
