I toured nearly every San Francisco and Marin facility, and I have a spreadsheet to prove it. I was moving my parents to the Bay Area, and we needed assisted living for people with memory issues who do not meet the threshold for memory care. Also, both of my parents had been dramatically declining for a couple of months, so we needed to act fast to get them new doctors with weekly appointments and consistent caregiving. Aegis Corte Madera is the right place for them. An excellent UCSF doctor visits the community every Tuesday, and she has improved my parents' medical care. She works closely with the nurses onsite, so there is clear communication and implementation. Both parents made trips to Marin Health (hospital), so it was not an overnight success, but their health has stabilized. I have faith in their medical care, and they are in better shape than when they lived in their home. The management is exceptionally welcoming. They made my parents feel like they belonged right away. The GM buddied up to my dad to make him comfortable. The nurses and caregivers display a lot of care and even affection, which helped my mom adapt. The management staff is deeply invested in each individual and will do whatever it takes to settle people into the community. The cost is high, and the entrance/community fee is too high. However, I could not find another option offering medical support, very comfortable living spaces, a sunny apartment with views of the Marin ridgelines, and lively community activities. When I looked at my spreadsheet, the monthly costs for almost all the facilities were very close. I bit the bullet and paid the higher community fee, and we've had an excellent outcome. I moved my husband into Aegis Corte Madera 14 months ago. He has received not only excellent care, but I have been given the support that I needed to help guide us both on this journey. They love when I bring our pets to visit and it really feels like a family atmosphere. The communication is good and getting better all the time with the new General Manager. What I feel is most important, is that the most of the staff has been there for over five years. That really says something about the company. The activities are really great. They include weekly field trips which include beaches, symphonies, and baseball games. Ever day there is a schedule of wonderful classes from exercise to poker! My mom has been at Aegis Corte Madera since 2009 (post-stroke). Were a large San Francisco family (with two adult children in Marin), so it was not only convenient, but more importantly, the community just felt right to all of us. The residents are warm, there are just enough of them (over 100) to pick and choose friends that share common interests -- whether it be movies, religious services, walking club, bingo, poker, art classes, lectures, jewelry making, and the many cultural and off-site excursions (there's a bus) that take place on a weekly or twice weekly basis. The care has been superb, and there are longtime caregivers (Kevin and Sarbjit, and more recently, Ryan and Falle), who have made a significant difference in my mother's life. They're like family. Really, truly, the case. With both, there's continuity, caring, and concern. There's also an on site doctor, Rebecca Conant, who has made a significant difference for us, the adult children, and of course, for my mother. We know we can count on her, and she has the passion and compassion that makes her one of the finest medical professionals (were a family of doctors) in the county. We chose Aegis not only for the atmosphere and how it felt when we toured (food is good, too), but for the many activities and the liveliness / positive vibe of the place. How does it get its beat? It all comes down to a team of individuals, under the helm of Jordana Berliner, who tirelessly and creatively plan activities and events for the residents. We haven't, over the past 12 years, had any regrets. And when there are issues or things that need modification or attention, the general manager (Lee, and now Bill), listens with intention, taking needs seriously and to heart. I have enjoyed living at Aegis of Corte Madera for approximately 6 years now. The staff who look after us for our day to day needs are wonderful and the Med technicians are exemplary with their attention to detail. We enjoy three square meals per day with a lot of different choices. If you're not extra hungry they'll make you a tasty sandwich instead! We have a terrific Activity Department who keep us focused with card games to making jewelry to exercise. There are plenty of different types of musical bands that come & play for us too. There are very few times in the day we're struggling for something to do unless of course we could benefit from an hour's nap! Local tours in the bus are usually available to sign up for. The good thing about this place is the staff are always willing to help you from making a phone call to show you how to play Poker or even show you how to paint a picture! A very satisfied resident. We relocated our father from his home in S. CA last year to be near his three children in Marin. We looked at several assisted living facilities and chose Aegis for a number a reason (location, size, family owned, length of employee tenure, etc..) It exceeded our expectations. He was treated like family with a very high level of care and professionalism. We had 11 months with him at Aegis before he passed in March of this year. You might want to consider looking elsewhere before moving an elderly parent into Aegis. Several things to consider; 1) most expensive care facility anywhere in the North Bay (by a lot), 2) they look for any way possible to raise rates with a complicated billing system that is impossible to track. Staff can do nothing differently than they did the year before, but will say your parent requires more care and thus more expense...(by the way, they got sued for this in a class action suit and lost), 3) hide your parents jewelry...it will disappear, especially if they have Alzheimer's. In six years, the cost went from $6500/month for two in a one bedroom to $11,000 for one in a studio. Oh, you will get hit for what amounts to a $1 per pill every time it is given including aspirin and vitamins. Figure that on a monthly basis. read more

It is difficult to find quality affordable care for a loved one suffering from dementia. In our case, my brother and I looked at several options in Marin County that were lower in cost but settled on Aegis due to the quality of facilities and wide variety of activities available. For the first year, our mother lived in the low-care assisted living section, after 1 year we moved her to Life's Neighborhood their high-care wing. It was difficult the first year because Aegis' model in their basic assisted living assumes the resident can do almost everything for themselves, however our Mom was rapidly in decline. There was a progressively widening gap between the level of care Mom needed and what Aegis could provide under the low-care wing's model. However once Mom was moved to their high-care wing, the care model fit our needs and things have gone considerably better. The staff in Life's Neighborhood have uniformly been honest, friendly, patient, caring and have adapted their care to fit the specific needs our Mom has. Moreover, my brother and I are on a tight budget to afford Aegis and more than once we have found Aegis willing to work with us on total costs to keep them in the range we are able to afford. If there is any complaint my brother and I have of Aegis it is their backoffice recordkeeping, both in accounting and in the nursing records , is very manual and often not accurate. However, whenever we've pointed out a discrepancy, Aegis has been willing to correct it and the actual nurses on staff are extremely skilled. For anyone dealing with the complexities of obtaining good care for a loved one suffering from dementia, if you are able to afford Aegis you should consider them, and if you choose them you should remain actively involved in monitoring Aegis and helping them care properly for your loved one. We have done it this way, and are very pleased so far with the results. read more

This is billed as a high quality care facility. We paid tremendous amounts of money to place my mother at Aegis. We were forced to pay for "fall care", and yet when she rang her call button, it took staff 45 minutes to come to help her. An ambulance would have arrived sooner. Some of her belongings were stolen by staff. We met with the director several times, and no changes took place. I am loathe to write negative reviews, but Aegis was so terribly disappointing for us, I don't want others to have to experience the same. We took my mother out of Aegis, and she is living at home with 24-hour care. I would not recommend this facility to anyone. So so disappointing and saddened by our experience. read more

I rarely write reviews but when I do, it is because the service has been so wonderful that I need to yell from the tree tops! In August of 2014, I started to plan my mother's move here from Palm Desert. From the moment I met John, the brand new Director, I knew that this was the perfect place for her. John worked with me for over 2 months while I gently remodeled my mothers apartment and never did I hear the word "no". He was wonderfully accommodating and I have found that to be true of the whole staff. As soon as you walk into Aegis, you can tell that it is different than any other Assisted living facilities in the area. The Entry and Front living room is filled with residents, some reading the paper by the fireplace, some having coffee in the "Cafe" and others waiting to be picked up for an excursion. Wonderful! My dear 82 year old mom has been at Aegis since October and has made wonderful friends and has really blossomed there. She had been living by herself for 20+ years and was apprehensive about living in a community. She now has a reason to get out everyday and enjoy an exercise class, meals with her new friends and scenic drives - it is a blessing! As wonderful as Aegis has been, they really proved themselves when on Dec 26, my mother had been feeling under the weather and I had just left for Southern California. The staff and John grew worried as my mothers energy was worse than the day before, so he requested a chest X-Ray which revealed early stage pneumonia. They called me while I was in the airport and transported her to the hospital for antibiotics and further care. I can't tell you how relieved I was that someone was watching out for her. If she had been by herself, she probably would have ignored it until after the holidays with possibility dire results. We chose Aegis for our Mom because the memory care unit was amazing. Mom felt like she was in the community at restaurants with the daily meals. She would introduce me to her friends. The caregivers are wonderful, there are several as they cover all the shifts, but we got to know all of them and they were so sweet with Mom. We found that her room was immaculate, her laundry done, her things looked after. The meals were excellent, every time we visited during meal times, Mom was eating well. When we moved Mom off wheat, the kitchen customized her food with gluten free choices. Mom enjoyed the outings and the activities. The space is lovely, patios and gardens for Mom to enjoy. We also ate in the main dining room which had a nice menu for all of us to enjoy. We really appreciate the care that our Mom received. read more

While all of the assisted living industry is plagued with relative management turnover, Aegis by far has the most consistent and highest quality caregivers who have worked there literally for years. So different from facilities staffed by union caregivers, the caregivers at Aegis truly are involved in the quality of life for the residents. Not because they are required to do so but because that is the kind of personality hired by Aegis. My mom lived at Aegis for 3.5 years. I quickly learned what a difficult job these leaders and caregivers have in the interest of the elderly. I compared notes with friends with parents at other facilities and we all agree there are challenges. It's the nature of elder care. The difference is that the leadership at Aegis consistently responded quickly, they worked closely with me to create the optimal care plan, the Care team was always open to working together, and they all genuinely cared and loved my mother. The fairly new director, Lee Kaufmann, is the most passionate and committed leader I ever met. The care director, Crystal Schindele, is the most sincere, effective and knowledgeable care director I've ever met. My mom recently passed away and this team could not have been more gracious, supportive and compassionate. Choosing elder care is the toughest decision we make as adult children. It was time. My sister was beginning to show signs of dementia. Clearly she couldn't stay in her home any longer. She was posing a threat to herself and her community. She still had some cognitive abilities, but suggesting to her that she should move into assisted living was off the table as far as she was concerned. Not an unusual reaction. But the day came. My husband, nephew and myself arrived at home and began packing some personal items. Needless to say, she was very suspicious and began showing signs of "digging in"..."I'm not going anywhere" comments. My nephew and I had previously visited Aegis of Corte Madera and were impressed with the environment. It was clean, well lit and the staff very friendly. Making a decision of this magnitude is not an easy one. I had gone online and researched facilities to see if there were any major complaints. Aegis, seemed like the right facility for my sister. We drove her up there and she was still very agitated about being moved. After this move in, we decided not to visit her right away. She needed time to adjust to this new environment. When we did visit, we found her with her new friends; one of whom seemed to "adopt" her and spent lots of time with her. My sister has been in Aegis for over two years. We recently had to move her, but if we could, we would have kept her there. The attention she received was exceptional. The staff was very attentive to her. Her room was always clean and so was she. We miss not being able to visit her there, but am grateful we had the opportunity to experience her excellent care and attention. read more

I moved my father here due to Alzheimer's. I thought I was getting an ulcer from the worry of moving him out of his home of 45 years. With the help of the initial game plan :"operation move dad out" ( the fantastic new GM John Carpentier) the day came and I got him there. Next step the warm welcome and great care he is receiving, my father transitioned far better than I could have imagined. With in a day every staff member calls my dad by his fist name. They all encourage him to get involved with the community and my father who never went to a "gym class" in his life now goes to the morning exercise class, takes walks with friendly and fun staff members and is once again eating three tasty meals a days. My father has made many new friends and is engaged in many activities ( which is not the norm if you new my dad ) For me it was one of the hardest things I had to do ,take an independent and brilliant man ( my father) and put him in assisted living because it was no longer safe to be alone. He is still independent which is what he would want but has many eyes on him. I am extremely happy with Aegis of CM. Yes there is turn over but not that much, care taking is a high stress job and all these assisted living places have turn over, its got to be the hard part of running Aegis business , they do it well. I visit 5 days a week so I see whats going on and I like it.Did I mention they have happy hour twice a week, so much fun !!! read more

My parents moved into Aegis of Corte Madera 2 1/2 years ago and have been extremely pleased with their life there. From my perspective, since the arrival of the new director, Aegis has transitioned from being acceptable or good to now being truly extraordinary. Sadly, my mother recently passed away, and under the directorship of the new manager my father has been treated with remarkable warmth, caring, and consideration. Because of them, this very difficult time has been made that much more tolerable. In my father's words the entire staff are "truly exceptional". As the daughter of a 90 year old who had been dependent on my mother for 66 years of marriage,, I have the assurance that my father is not alone - he has the entire Aegis community around him along with the dedicated and committed staff. My mother was here for 2 years. At the end of those 2 years, a vibrant, healthy woman was bedridden and extremely depressed. Everything was great until signing on the dotted line, then things slowly but surely went awry. Nice clothes went missing. Exec director was changed 3 times. She was a flight risk, so she wore an ankle bracelet. Still, twice she was found blocks away; once by a grocery store clerk and again on a street corner by a good samaritan. No one knew she was missing. She became diabetic and gained 50 pounds sitting by the "sweets" station with no monitoring. I was paying "points" for services that I discovered were not performed (like showers and diet monitoring). What really did it was the third time she got out, the alarms rang, an employee saw her leave and did nothing (she thought "someone else was taking care of it"). I filed a report with Dept of Social Services and got her out of there. At least the Director was honest about what happened. The employees who did all the hard work at this place were paid very poorly. If you watch the YouTube videos of the CEO, he's nowhere to be found, other than making speeches and collecting money. He's the head of a huge corporation and has many other facilities under different names. My mother's been thriving for 3 years in a small private home and I don't have a single complaint. I had not filed a review before now because I couldn't find a site to do sp. Maybe things have changed at Aegis of Corte Madera. I hope so. read more

I had to move my father from the east coast to the bay area two years ago and looked at over 13 facilitates in the bay area and narrowed it down to two. One being Aegis for a number of reasons, the decor was traditional which I tho he could get out and walk, go to the shopping center next door, and the people who lived and worked there seems very happy. Prices were comparable for other facilities in this category of care and felt it would be a good fit. The staff did everything they could to make my father feel welcomed and help integrate him into his new surrounding as it was a big change, especially with someone in the early stages of ALZ. Millie who was my first contact was very engaging and helpful with my navigating the process of getting my father set up in his new situation, Gail the activities director was a joy to be around and worked very hard to keep my father engaged in activities. Bill Phelps, the general manager became close to my father and very good at knowing how do deal with him especially when he was having a bad day. The staff there was always very nice and became an extended family to my father. The chef also did a wonderful job with the food as my father always commented on how much he liked it. In the time that he was there I also became close to some of the other people staying there as well as their families and most seem ed very happy with the level of care and service. read more
