I stopped by the Allen Museum while out in Oberlin for the Frank Lloyd Wright House tour and was suitably impressed. While relatively small, the museum is nicely set up and has a very nice collection with a wide variety of items. The building itself is very nice with a big open central gallery and a number of smaller satellite galleries surrounding it. The collection seemed strong in Asian art and a nice overview of Western art. I was especially impressed with the special exhibit in the large new exhibition hall called Afterlives of the Black Atlantic which explores the complexities of memory, identity, and belonging in the wake of the transatlantic slave trade. The pieces are interesting and challenging with a wider variety then I was expecting. I also enjoyed the special exhibits in the upper level galleries. The Allen Memorial Art Museum is an excellent smaller museum which is well worth a visit.

Kid K was bored by the end but still said she liked it. Family history plus info about his intentions. Steep stairs so be careful. Classy items in the gift shop. Definitely worth a visit if you are nearby, or a detour if you are at all interested in history or technology.

To get to the historic house, I had to drive past the quaint Milan town square, which in itself seems to be a genuine piece of Americana. The house and adjacent museum visitor center are located near the top of a hill. They overlook what is now a defunct historic canal. Inside the visitors center, there is an impressive collection of Edison's audio inventions - many that still work! Inside the house are several artifacts owned by the Edisons, as well as other period-correct pieces. A few of Thomas Edison's personal items are even on display upstairs. Deb enthusiastically painted a vivid picture of how life was in the Edison house. She explained how many of the artifacts were used. The "school teacher" in her certainly came out, as she encouraged questions. The house is conveniently located only a few miles from the Ohio turnpike. I highly recommend experiencing this interesting and informative, historic gem.

There are a few recognizable names among the collection such as Mark Rothko and Keith Haring. I visited the museum in March of 2026 and it was my first visit to the museum. My bf and I were done in about 75 minutes. Adult tickets are $12 with some discounts offered to seniors, children, the military, and locals. We saw some impressive pieces, including a gorgeous installation that featured taxidermied peacocks that was definitely the showstopper among every visitor that day. We were bummed that a large section was closed off in preparation for an upcoming exhibit. It meant a lot of non special exhibit art was not viewable to us. A heads up and/or a discount would have been nice. Meanwhile, a viewable exhibit with a gorgeous Tiffany glass window installation was almost missed entirely by us because the doors to get to it were covered up by curtains, giving off the impression that it was closed. Fortunately, we walked through the curtains out of curiosity and saw the glass piece but many others in the museum walked right by it. A sign letting people know that the space was open would be a good idea! The art museum store was closed by the time we were done but from the outside, it looked like a pretty good, if pretty typical, art museum gift shop. It is worth checking out if you are in the Akron downtown area.

Unique to see the Kent State Shooting without Jeffrey Miller. Lovely to see a Calder and a Magritte here as well. Don't miss the facade of the building which itself is an art piece. I understand that it uses the same steel and glass as was installed in the Louvre. [Review 1351 of 2024 - 270 in Ohio - 22374 overall]

We were disappointed to find that the "playground" only consisted of a wood balance beam, different size stepping logs, and a climbing wall. There was nothing appropriate for my youngest, and my oldest only played for 5 minutes before telling me, "Mommy, this isn't fun. Can we go?" Next, we went inside to check out the Nature Center, and I was pleasantly surprised. The kids had a great time crawling through the giant tree, looking at taxidermy, reading books, playing games, and seeing live animals like turtles and snakes. We spent a half hour playing. I don't think it's worth a 45 minute drive, but if you're in the area or driving through, it's a great place to keep your little ones busy for an hour or so. There are also beauthiking trails that we didn't have time to explore.
