It did smell wonderful to me like so much leather (and I'm a vegetarian!). I went to the aisle for my gender and size and started looking at the overwhelming number of options. Meagan was in the aisle helping other customers, but quickly greeted me and made sure I was going on the right direction. She helped me get the right fit (which I wouldn't have be able to do so well on my own) and she helped me get the right style for me. Their website and email confirmation both proudly advertised "EVERY ORDER SHIPS WITHIN 24 HOURS" well 3 days later i had still not received tracking information, i sent them a direct message on instagram, which their email suggested i use to reach them. After no response, i decided to call them. They had not shipped, and i was informed they are out of stock. Good thing I called as they had already had my 400 dollars for 3 days, and now who knows how long for the refund to process. They failed to deliver the product. They failed to uphold their advertised promise. They failed to communicate. They failed to offer any compensation for their failures. This is a really fun store if you're from out of town. I'm from California, and just loved seeing floor to ceiling shelves full of different types of cowboy boots!! It's quite a fascinating thing to see. They also have seats up and down the aisles, so you can try on whatever you want. No one is pressuring you to buy the shoes, or make you feel bad for taking pics. There are so many different variations in the boots, in terms of embroidery and material used. The more fancy, colorful, detailed the embroidery, the more expensive the shoe is. The material can be leather, but also can be alligator skin, etc. The prices of the shoes can be as cheap as ~$80, with the most expensive I saw going up to $1000! (yes that's 3 zeros). So there is a huge range for everyone's needs. The cool thing is, you can wear these boots for life. I ended up getting 2 pairs of boots, because they were the MOST COMFORTABLE boots I had ever tried on. It was some comfort shoe brand. I felt that I could wear them for 12 hours straight standing up on my feet! So impressive. One pair was on sale, another was regular price, and I paid ~$260 total. Not bad!! Also there is a 1-year warranty included with shoe defect, pretty awesome. Even if you aren't going to buy shoes here, definitely take a walk up and down these aisles. 1 Star is correct. After moving to Texas and receiving a promotion my husband decided to splurge and buy some real southern cowboy attire. We went to Allen's Boots to order a pair of custom crocodile cowboy boots with a matching custom belt. These were an order we had to place and we were told it would be about 4 months to receive them. So while there he did a little more shopping & in a couple hours time, he spent almost $3000. You would think when a client spends that kind of money they would be treated well...NOPE not at Allen's Boots. Unfortunately they had HORRIBLE customer service. Fast Forward to 7 months later and no communication from Allen's Boots about the custom crocodile order. We call, not only are there no boots but they had received his custom belt and sold it to someone else. Derek needs to wait longer-again. Fast Forward to 10 months later, still no order. Now it's getting beyond upsetting. He had wanted to where them to a charity event and it's come and gone. He calls the manager. The manager finally says they have the order at the store and he will personally be there and see that Derek has a great experience with his boots when he comes to pick them up. He sets up the day and time for us to come to meet him. We show up to find he's NOT THERE. He forgot about the $3000 customer that had waited almost a year for his order. Needless to say, we never met the awful management, never got the order, and will never shop there again. My friend and I ventured in here to kill some time before we met up with a few other friends in the city. I have never been in a store like this before and I must say, I was impressed! There were shelves upon shelves of cowboy boots, for men, women and children, all neatly arranged by size. There was also a good selection of nice cowboy hats (which my friend was perusing as he wanted to wear it to a friend's wedding). We were greeted as soon as we got in and were asked if we needed help with anything. When you see a two-star review for a local institution with a good reputation, it's likely that someone has a petty gripe they want to air. And yes, that's exactly what motivated me to write this review. Last weekend the girlfriend wanted to go boot shopping and I guess we kinda forgot that Saturday afternoon would find the shop full of tourists and looky-loos. We were fortunately able to engage a salesperson since we had a fairly good idea of what we were looking for and what we wanted to spend. She was not the most knowledgable or motivated sort, and we were surprised to see so few options offered in a shop that almost certainly offers the largest selection in town. As our sales rep fumbled to find ladies boots in red, under $500, the call of nature became insistent and I asked if I might use the restroom. "We don't have public restroom facilities available." I catch her eye and point down to my boots and say, "I bought these Luccheses here, do you have a private bathroom you might let me use?" "No, I'm sorry" was her response. With no promising options on the immediate horizon I tell the girlfriend, "I think we should shop somewhere where they'll let me use the restroom. We left and found the perfect boot for her at a smaller shop later that afternoon. At another local shop I spied a pair that caught my eye and I plunked down $500 on another pair of Lucchese. I've been trying to find a pair of boots for awhile now. I came to this area of town specifically to stop in this store. I was looking around trying to see the options in my size and length that I wanted and the person that worked there started shouting at me what are you looking for ?!? There were tons of tourists and young people in the store. I just replied that I was trying to find a pair of boots that I liked. He proceeded to hover over me and my boyfriend the entire time we were at the store. Did he offer help no? Did he give us room to look no. If I am going to spend 500-800 on a pair of boots this type of hovering without actually helping is a major turn off. I ended up leaving and wanting to just head home. My boyfriend talked me into going into a few more boot shops. We finally found a store with amazing customer service and I bought boots elsewhere. If you're real about shopping don't go here. I love walking into any boot store. The smell of thousands of pairs of new leather boots is wonderful. It is a distinct smell that I never grow tired of. Allens Boots is a staple of the South Congress (SoCo) area of Austin. They literally have 1000's of pairs of boots. They also have other Western wear. If you are looking for boots, it can be easy to get sticker shock. Depending upon the brand, boots can cost a couple of hundred of dollars to thousands of dollars. I will always say buy what is comfortable. Don't get stuck on a brand. Also, learn how boots are supposed to fit. When you put on a boot, your heal should kinda "pop" into the bottom of the boot. Ask a clerk at the store to help you better understand this. There is nothing more comfortable than a pair of boots that fit properly. There is nothing more painful than a pair of boots that do not fit properly. Not to pick on one brand but I do not personally like the way Luchesse boots fit me so I do not buy them. It's nothing against them. I know plenty of people that wear them. I choose not too because I found other brands that fit me well. As a side note, the brand Luchesse is pronounced "LooCasey". Please do not pronounce it "LooShay" as I heard someone in the store say. I almost fell on the floor laughing. As far as Allen's Boots go, I have seen good deals and I have seen deals that aren't so good. If you don't know what you are looking for, you may not know if you are getting a good deal or not. In my opinion - not too much trumps - a pair of comfortable knee high boots and a short skirt or cut-offs. Not much. So when I was in Austin the other week for ACL, I knew I had to stop into Allen's boots to browse their beautiful, often hand-crafted, sturdy cowboy boots. With over 4,000 boots on display, and about 12 boot manufacturers Allen's is a sure thing - when it comes to selecting a gorgeous pair of cowboy boots. They carry everything from Frye Boots (my favorite), to Lucchese Boots, to a plethora of other wonderful brands as well. Allen's boots are truly works of art. The colors, and time that goes into each pair is astounding. A good pair of boots - will last you for years - so though the prices - will make you cringe - it's best to look at purchasing a pair as an investment. My closet plays host to way too many pairs of boots (cowboy boots included) for me to rationalize buying a 600 dollar pair of swoon worthy pointed toe boots here- but if you have a deep appreciation for boots, and or have always considered buying a pair - Allen's is a perfect stop. Well, I guess I'm downgrading Allens Boots from a "must go when in Austin" to a "wouldn't ever go again." Here's the thing - no matter how nice and varied the selection, Allens is still a retailer. It might select unique products, but it doesn't manufacture them, and there are always other retailers. Case in point - my beautiful boots that I bought in June are available through both Zappos and Nordstrom. When a retailer bungles customer service, it is time to give up any allegiance to that retailer. Looking through other Yelp reviews for Allens, it appears I'm not the only person who was less than happy with the service after the card was swiped. Let me start off by saying that I am fully aware that most of the fault in the story that follows belongs to me and me alone! I know that Allens is not responsible for insuring me against my own stupidity. That doesn't change my disappointment in the store. So as mentioned in my previous review, I bought a gorgeous pair of Old Gringo boots at Allens in June. I wore them about once or twice a week for the next five months. The boots are high quality, for sure - they barely scuffed, and only got more comfortable with each wear. Nice cowboy boots are meant to last a lifetime, and these boots are made very well. One day, I did a stupid thing. I left my boots out on the floor, and my dog decided they smelled like rawhide. He chewed the toe right off one of my boots. I was devastated. I called Old Gringo (also singularly unhelpful), and the representative there told me that this was between me and the retailer. I called Allens. I did not expect a replacement pair or anything like that. I expected repair options, if not provided by Allens then at least a sympathetic, informative speech about repair options elsewhere. If my boots were in fact irreparable, I hoped that Allens would provide me with some kind of discount on a new pair. I got nothing. A big fat nothing. Allens doesn't do repairs and seems to know surprisingly little about the process of repairing boots for a store called Allens Boots. The woman I spoke to told me that they could not give me a discounted price on a new pair because "the manufacturer sets the price." This made no sense to me. Allens could knock 20% off my purchase price and still make a profit - I'd be shocked if this weren't true. I asked to speak with a manager, and the woman said, "I'll have her call you, but she'll say the same thing." I gave my number and never got a call. Look. I understand that Allens is not at fault here for the damage to my boot. I know that my dumb dog ate the toe, and that I was a moron to leave a giant piece of leather on the floor for him to chew. But - seriously, boot store? You're going to pretend there is absolutely zero you can do to help a girl out? I mean I was prepared, if need be, to buy a whole new pair of boots, giving Allens money and profit they wouldn't have gotten if my dog hadn't gotten to my pair. They couldn't give me a break on that when I'd had the boots for less than half a year? When you run an ice cream store, and a customer drops her scoop on the floor, you replace the ice cream - not because it's your fault, but because you're a decent person with a beating heart, and you can afford to cut her a little slack to maintain some good will. Happily, I took my boots to a shoe repair at home, and though I'd given them up for lost, the cobbler did a splendid job. They look like new, and I hope to wear out my boots in the normal way. Everything worked out, and I'm still happy with the boots, and it is still true that Allens has a great selection. The customer service, though, left me very unimpressed. Great selection of small sizes in Old Gringo boots. I wear a size 5 or 5.5 in Boots. I also have small calves, which means I need a boot that has a slimmer calf part of the boot or else I look like a a flamingo in a bucket! They are also reasonable and fair priced for OGs. This all means that OGs are a perfect fit for me. However, Allen's Boots are the only boot store in Austin that has a huge selection of OGs and small sizes. She was back again this year, and wanted to take her Mom there, because of the great experience (and cool boots) she got last time.. Some visitors think they have to have boots when they come to Texas, then stick 'em in the closet when they get back home.. But, it was pretty obvious, that Catherine wears her boots, they were very well broken in.. So, I didn't even hesitate to point out a really cool pair of Old Gringo boots, that was "so her", which she ended up buying, and wearing out of the store.. Here's what I like most about Allen's Boots, though.. It would have been easy to give less customer service, since they were packed with SXSW people, but they stayed with us for the entire time, it was like having your own personal assistant. And, the young lady that helped us, was courteous, knowledgeable, and just a pleasure to deal with..
