I've been here a few times and the food is normally pretty good. The grinder was great and they have interesting specials. Service is a toss up, it can go either way depending on the server you get. It's a diner not expecting much, it's alright, and clean. Recently had a sandwich and upgraded to onion rings. They were burnt. I get it, sometimes the food is off for that order but it was obvious enough that the server had to have known, didn't say jack. When I told the server that the onion rings were burnt and hardly edible they said "yah they are a little dark" and just walked away. They were dark brown and black in places. I am a big foodie and amateur chef. The Allenwood Cafe's parmesean crusted pork chop represents the best of homemade cooking turned up a notch. It was moist, full of flavor, with a perfect level of cheese and seasoning. Each bite was good without it being overcooked or undercooked. I altered the order to have a loaded baked potato. I am amazed how poorly many places cook them, burnt and dry. The Cafe doesnt make this same mistake. Allenwood Cafe's baked potato is moist from skin to the center without the burnt char often found at other places. The bacon was crisp. The cheese did not overwhelm or underwhelm. Perfectly cooked. If the loaded baked potato lacked something, it was chives or green onion. A staple for a loaded potato that would have made it perfect. My meal also came with a house salad, served with a house French. The salad was basic but loaded with croutons, often skimped on at other places. Thanks for making sure my favorite childish part of the salad was in abundance and tasted great. The homemade French dressing, though exceptionally sweat, did not overpower in the quantity served. I ended the meal with a chocolate cake with peanut butter icing. Though mainly a sheet cake, i would have prefered a double layer, the chocolate was fluffy, and the icing was again in perfect proportion to what what was served. Overall, I would order this meal again. And again. I applaud such care in the food. The cooking is the best of home country cooking. With minor adjustments, the pork chop, served with a veggie and salad would be priced much higher at a city restaurant when plated well. Any chef would be proud. As far as atmosphere, this is a country diner. Quaint, homey, with evidence of both from the scribbled drawings of kids and signage. The staff is humorous and exceptionally attentive to the customer. So many other places could learn from them. There is only one miss. Presentation could use some help, not because of the above. I like the atmosphere. The help it needs is in maintaining the building, floors, and ceilings from stains and debris. In a tough economy in a rural location, this is a hard battle. I understand, but some minor touch ups can make a difference. I will return, and hopefully my last remark is understood by both new and returning customers, and the staff, as not something that should stop anyone from coming here. I hope this place finds a way to survive and thrive here. I would drive out of my way to have this meal again. read more

I have family that lives around the area, and they recommended to us to come try. We were a big group of 7 people, but thankfully we were able to get a table quick. The place is what you expect a typical diner would look like, but it looked nice and had our tables cleaned before we sat down. Our waitress was nice and was able to get out drinks out fairly quickly. Food did take time to come out but was being cooked fresh. Along with their regular menu, they had a specialty menu for the month of May that had the peaches and cream stuff French toast and I ordered that. I was expecting the French toast to actually be stuffed but instead was made into a sandwich, which was interesting. However, the French toast itself tasted great! I could eat those alone and would have been satisfied. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the fact that the French toast was hot and the peaches were cold. I found it weird to eat a different temperature, but after a while it even out and tasted good to me. They did give me a good portion size too. Alot of potatoes but personally would have liked them better cooked longer. Bacon was good though. They gave majority of my family pancakes and they were huge (filled the whole plate). They said the pancakes tasted good and had plenty of syrup and butter to use. Overall, it was a good experience and not a bad place to stop by if you are in the area. read more

Stopped in on a slow night, 2 waitresses and only 2 other tables. Multiple dirty tables that needed cleared and wiped down. We sat down at a dirty table and had to ask it to be wiped off. Food was good I will say and it was served pretty quickly. We just were not impressed with the atmosphere. Waitresses were more worried about sharing a piece of pie. Towards the end of our meal the manager (I think) came out and was grumbling about other staff. Very unprofessional, she seemed like a real peach. Owners need to reevaluate how that place is run. They didn't know what the specials were but that didn't matter since everyone knew what they wanted. The food was ordered and arrived quickly. The orders were correct and were hot and fresh. Moderately priced menu items - $2 for a hotdog, up to $7 for a cheese steak. Beverages are .99 to 1.89. Staff was super friendly and helpful. It was packed though, there were only two open tables, so it took a bit to get our food on a Sunday for lunch. Standard American fair, burgers & dogs, omelettes and eggs. We are new to the area, just moving in across the street, and didn't even realize there was a cafe over there. We looked out the window and saw lots of cars in the parking lot and wondered what was going on so we went to check it out. The diner is back open for business. We waited a few weeks and decided to try it out. It is a tiny place and they were busy but we found a seat and checked out the menu. We didn't wait too long before they took our order. While we waited on our food I was trying to figure out if I could get a wheelchair in here so we could bring my daughter next time. I ordered a haddock sandwich, stewed tomatoes and mac & cheese. I also had the lobster bisque which was better than Red Lobster. The food was very good! He ordered a burger and fries and said it was very good. I can't wait to go back and have breakfast. The only thing they didn't have was an all day breakfast menu which was disappointing because I love breakfast for dinner. The prices were reasonable. I enjoy going to local dinners. You can usually get a great meal at a great price with friendly staff. Perhaps it was just my time there, but I didn't find any of that here. To start the restaurant look very unpleasing and has an odd smell. The tables are all a little crowded too. But that not super important. I don't think my waitress smiled once and never asked how we were doing or What we wanted. She just walked up with an notepad and waited for us to order. It wasn't just her, none of the staffed seemed friendly or happy. Then there is the food. My girlfriend described her eggs sausage and toast with hashbrowns as "not very good" and "The sausage was bad, really bad". The coffee tasted water down. I wanted to try this restaurant because I saw there special of the day was Chicken and Waffles, and I love that. But what was brought out to me was not good. The Chicken and Wafles that I got was one large waffle with canned chicken ontop in a "gravy" that was more like chicken noodle soup then anything else. It was bland tasteless and not good. Stopped on a whim while looking for a local breakfast prior to playing golf at White Deer. Nothing to look at from the outside, but lots of cars in the lot, always a good sign. I sat at the counter and the lady serving gave me the initial "you're not a local' chilly treatment but soon warmed to my politeness. She was super nice by the time I left. I've eaten here a few times for breakfast and each time it has been very good. It is one of the ONLY places on Route 15 that you can get homemade food. The coffee is great, but they really need to serve milk on the side rather than those cups. The prices are really fantastic and the breakfast is filling. They have scrapple and other local favorites. The scrapple (and I believe this is the only meat that will tell you the quality of the food served) was flavorless and only cooked on one side. My son and I passed by this cafe on the way to the Little League World Series looking for a quick, but good, bite to eat. After going by it the café really did not catch my eye. Went on yelp to look at the reviews for places to eat breakfast in the area and was pleasantly surprised at the ratings this café received. We went in and noticed that it appeared to be a little hometown joint. The employees along with the locals were very very friendly. I had a dish called "The Mess", which was a combination of sliced potatoes eggs peppers onions sausage and cheese all piled up on the plate along with a side dish of corn beef hash. Literally the worst service I've ever had. I've worked in food service for 5 years and know about rude customers and how difficult the job can be sometimes. But, the experience we had today was absolutely ridiculous. we walk in, no greeting, no smiles, no acknowledgment whatsoever. it took them 15 minutes just to take the dirty plates away from the table we sat at. it took them another 10 minutes to take our order, but the waitress wouldn't take our drink order. she said another waitress had to do it. the only plus was that once we ordered our food, it came out within 10 minutes. but, then again, eggs and toast don't take that long to cook. we still hadn't ordered drinks by the time our food had come out though and I was practically finished with it by the time they did come out!
