I Found Studio Queen a few years back, the first meeting was so amazing, the owner and the girls working there were super humble, very helpful and would always show up for us when we needed hair for our clients. One phone call or text message from us was enough for them to come through, as in getting the hair ready, always nice and understanding about exchanges, or ordering certain colors and lengths, and we would buy hair from them for about 2 to 4 thousand dollars if not every week, every other week. Sadly the girls are gone, owner is the same, new girls are hired and oh my god !!! They are rude, nonchalant, attitude level is all time high. There's always a blank stare when we tell them we need certain hair and at a certain time, and after the blank stare come the attitude with "make the full payment and then you'll get the hair!!!", and when we make the full payment, the hair is not what we asked for, quality is really bad but again there's always that blank stare, like "we don't care" type of stare. I highly dont recommend doing business with them, specially if you're gonna spend big like we do. Oh and now we always have to mention who we are in case they remember all the business we gave them, but it doesn't work lol. BYE!

This is what my first trip to Lukaro cost me …read more.. and being that my first trip to Lukaro was my first salon experience EVER, how was I supposed to know that this wasn't perfectly standard? Given that my mom is a brilliant hairstylist in her own right, I never set foot in a salon for the first 20 years of my life. When finally there came a time when I wanted to make a drastic change in my appearance, it happened to involve color -- which was the one thing my mom didn't consider herself proficient enough in to risk on my precious little head. No Fantastic Sam's for me, though... nope. My then manager was insistent that I use her stylist (incidentally, also Brooke Shields' stylist) at a place called Lukaro, in Beverly Hills. Now, Lukaro was a tad intimidating for me, to say the least. In fact, even if I hadn't been a complete hair salon neophyte, I'm pretty sure Lukaro still would have been pretty intimidating. For starters, everybody in here is either drop dead gorgeous or rich enough to fake it. And then I walked past Keira Knightley on my way up the stairs. Wow, maybe Fantastic Sam's would've been an easier place to get my feet wet, after all..? Yikes. So here I am, in Lukaro of all places. Pretty much holding onto my mom's sleeve, 20 years of life be damned. I put on my Jedi Robes (you know that's what they are) and waited until Jessica was ready for me, which didn't take long. When we finally got started on the big transformation, I quickly learned another truism of your time in the salon: you're forced to make awkward conversation, on pain of deafening silence. I was... not so good at this. Yikes again. First she took my obscenely poofy white afro and put foils in it, which was a surprisingly lengthy process. Once that was done, I sat under the heater... where my scalp turned into a flesh hibachi. Not so pleasant. Time for a shampoo! I definitely chalked up a solid $400 of my $500 bill at the shampoo bowl. How, you say? Well, I can't imagine what else at Lukaro could've cost half as much as the boobs in my FACE while they were shampooing my hair. And in front of my MOM, no less!! Ugh, man! Talk about mortifying. Er, moving right along... back to Jessica to check the color -- she gave the OK, and moved in with the shears. This part took practically no time at all: chop, chop, CHOP. After thoroughly flat-ironing my hair, I looked... well, kind of like Hillary Clinton, but with a little punky wax we were in business! It was EXACTLY what I wanted; I was elated! [*UPDATE: Added 'Before & After' pic*] So elated that I didn't even go postal when they gave me the bill. Not including the stylist's and her assistant's tips, the damage came to the aforementioned $500. This included the color (which was the most expensive phase at $300), the cut ("only" $100) and their recommended Kerastase shampoo/conditioning products (another $100). WHEW, that's a lot of money! I tried to fathom the amount of money I must have saved over the course of my young life by avoiding salons entirely, up to that point... Again, I had no frame of reference, so this didn't strike me as entirely out of the question. Unfortunately, my 2nd visit didn't really turn out so well, rendering my then fairly long hair pretty much fried for the next 6 months. I decided Lukaro wasn't really for me, after that. Still, it wasn't until MUCH later before I realized how badly Lukaro had been ripping me off -- I mean, come on, even without product, $400 for a cut and color? On a GUY? There's absolutely no justification for that. I've gotten better work done at equally prestigious salons for $150, and that is really ALL any guy should be paying for his hair. Sure, nobody else throws in the extra $350 worth of tittays, but...

Don't bother 'combing' Greater L.A. for a top-notch salon... Beverly Hills' Lukaro is the salon to…read morego to in Southern California for a high quality cut and style in a very relaxing and beautiful atmosphere. Lukaro, which is named for its founding stylists LUke, KAtia, and ROna, really captures the essence of simple, natural style with a flawless, precision cut. I frequented Lukaro for 3 years when I was in L.A. and the 400-mile jaunt to my preferred stylist Marzia Johnson (one of the founders of Zindagi in San Francisco) was not quite convenient. While a regular customer of Katia's, Lukaro moved addresses and finally landed in this beautiful location. In addition to having one of the best haircuts of your life, you can soothe your senses in this Mediterranean-like setting. The stylists have semi-private rooms and nooks -- which eliminates the chaotic feel oft found at bull-pen styled salons. I do have some questions as to if Katia is still there, since their website now lists only Luke and Rona as the founders and namesake. While writing this, I looked up their website and I must say that it SCREAMS L.A. attitude! Ironically they tout their lack of pretension all the while name-dropping and otherwise oozing pretension. Their website aside, as a client, I was impressed that the salon was on the lesser side of attitude and pretension for L.A. even though they do have a 'celebrity' following -- to which I can attest is true. Many a time, Debra Messing was having her hair styled by Luke while Katia styled mine. So perhaps you'll get as good a giggle, snort, and eye-roll as I did when reading these excerpts from their site: 'You are invited to visit a favorite celebrity stop noted for its warms and lack of pretentiousness. Enjoy cappuccino and the luxury of personalized service as you indulge in the tranquility of Beverly Hills' most celebrated salon. Although I will say that her methods did not start out quite the way I am used to (she brushed my hair A LOT while it was still in it's natural state.) SHE DID A REALLY NICE JOB! My hair came out sleek but still light and flowy. She made sure to use the flat iron in a way that still gave my hair volume but no frizz. The products she used were so light that my hair was blowing in the wind like a commercial when I stepped outside. When it came to the trim, she first told me how much she wanted to cut and ASKED me if that was ok, BEFORE, she started. I appreciated that since some people can be sensitive about length and are afraid of having too much cut off. When I left the salon I went to meet up with a friend who instantly complimented the layers in my hair and before even commenting on the straightness she said the cut looked great! Best of all it's lasting pretty well. It's been about 6 days and my hair is still perfectly straight and virtually no frizz. If you are looking for someone to temporarily straighten your natural hair, you should definitely give her a try. SIDENOTE/DISCLAIMER/KUDOS: Once she was finished she DID actually reference (without prompting) all of the brushing she had done and said that she was trying to get familiar with my texture and see which methods would work best.
