I had lunch at Allie's. It's a local breakfast lunch restaurant. Clearly there are a lot of local neighborhood folks who love it. I like breakfast food for lunch so ordered eggs, hash browns, and bacon. The food was delicious and fairly quick. I thought the service was average. The servers seemed more interested in talking to themselves than getting my bill ready, asking me if I would like another drink, or anything at all. The interior is nice and clean. read more

I suggested Allie's for lunch after 3 visiting relatives visited the Potawatomi Zoo to see how much the nearby Zoo has changed in 40 years. We grew up in South Bend. They all had burgers and really enjoyed them. 4 of them. Looked fabulous. IU Smashburgers with beautiful crispy fries. I had a horrible meal and would appreciate a raincheck replacement. The board listed one of about 7 daily specials . . . #6 listed was Polish Sausage, Noodles, Cabbage. I thought it would be a link of Polish garlic sausage, Kluski noodles pile , Sour Cabbage (stewed) spoonful. I was surprised it was a smooshed up mess. No fresh sausage link. It was 9 chewed-up looking slices of smooshed sausage mixed in a casserole of squished noodles and cabbage. It really looked extremely unappealing. Tasted tasteless. There were no kluski noodles. Just chewed up 1/4" noodle bits.. . bits. And slivers of cabbage. Looked like something few would want to eat. Surprised. I have always been a fan of Allie's. Wonder how this ended up on the menu??? I didn't eat it after tasting it. Maybe 3 bites of the sausage. No flavor. Just mush. Took it home and evaluated on the counter. Picked out the beat-up sausage slivers, counted 7. Rinsed and saved for eggs. Not even a half cup of meat. $9.95. The rest went down the disposal. I am familiar with cabbage and noodle casserole. Simmered long and slow. My husband is west-side Polish. My mother-in- law used to make it. But that isn't how it was listed on the board. No one asked a question why I didn't eat it. It just sat there on the plate. Allie's is locally owned and has many regulars. The prices are very reasonable. The service is usually good but they do have one grumpy waitress. She isn't awful but you can tell she's tired. The food is hit and miss so you have to order carefully. I have liked the food when I could order off the menu but am not a fan of their catering. They also have very limited hours, they are typically just open for breakfast and lunch. The jalapeño bacon BLT with fries is amazing and only a $7 entree! The hot coco is also really good. The parking lot sometimes fills up but they also have street parking available. read more

I travel extensively, and often rely on reviews of an establishment to make my final decision of what/where to eat. Yelp really needs to work on sorting out all these sour pusses that have these overboard needs and expectations, then leave bad reviews because they were unrealistic to begin with. It makes it difficult to get and accurate bead on what is real. I won't mention and names, but when you have personal issues, and leave a bad review... that's very sad. I almost missed this little gem Of a place, due to some fake reviews. Yes, I said it....FAKE!! I stopped here in Fathers Day, the cafe was pretty busy and was sat quickly!! Had coffee on the table in less than 2 minutes of being seated. The breakfast was hot and fresh, the pancakes were fluffy and plenty of syrup. I couldn't even eat everything!!! The service was fast, the waitress was on the move. To the people that left these poor reviews, stay home!! You leave reviews that are unsubstantiated and make it difficult for travelers like myself to make an accurate choice. Nope, no mush- website needs updating. I ordered decaf and friend ordered regular. There times while sitting there different servers tried to give me regular coffee, even though I had a different colored cup which I assumed meant I had decaf. Friend ordered a Hash Brown skillet and I ordered a half order of Corned Beef Hash skillet. After waiting 20 minutes I noticed people who been seated after us getting their food. Finally the food showed up. I got a full skillet order, not half. Our food was really good, the coffee was good, the service "meh". Then admitted it to me, saying she gave an older gentleman the same cup because of some comments he made. Waste of $26. Food wasn't that good, but the biscuits and gravy was okay. A huge shout-out to everyone at Allie's Cafe! They did an absolutely fabulous job catering my daughter's 25th birthday party. Betty was easy to work with, and helped to create an affordable, perfect menu. We rented out the entire cafe on a Sunday for a private party (they are closed on Sundays), and brought in our own Sangria & sheet cake. The server was hard-working and friendly throughout the day, from an early start so we could come in and decorate, to a late finish due to end-of-party arrivals who wanted to chat for a bit. I am a fan of breakfast and wish every place fast, medium, and slow food joints would make it 24 hours. I grew up in a 24 hour diner city so I love the eggs. Now, this place is not open 24 hours, but rather is one of these odd early AM to afternoon places that seem to be all over Indiana. I like this spot for breakfast and especially the protein scramble. Servers are friendly, accommodating and responsive. They help each other out and put the customer first. I often sit at the countertop, watch TV and observe the kitchen. My food came out as ordered, for the most part. The patron next to me liked it so well that he ordered one for himself. A woman (owner/manager?) joined the kitchen and was asked to make his scramble- same specifications as mine (1/2 sausage/half bacon). What came out had zero visible bacon and had large lumps of cold cheese in it- not melted. It looked slapped on the plate and gross! The patron was gracious but I pointed out that it wasn't correct or appetizing. The server apologized and asked the woman who was defensive and blew off the inquiry. After that I watched servers politely ask (the reason I think owner/boss?) about other inaccurate orders, only for her to shoot those down the same way. Wow... I'm not sure I want to go back. Allie's is a nice quaint establishment that is a hybrid of a diner and a restaurant. It has a nice cozy atmosphere that's well kept, and isn't too divey and not rundown like others of its kind. When I walked in I was greeted warmly by all of the staff and was made to feel as if I was at home. I looked at their menu and their options looked filling and like the type of home style comfort food that I was looking for. I ordered their eggs benedict omelet with a small side of one biscuit and gravy and was impressed by the portion of my omelet. The serving size surpassed my expectations and was amply filled. When I took a bite of each it tasted like a home cooked meal away from home! The waitress kept my coffee filled and the manager came to greet me and made pleasant conversation with me which was much appreciated, and very hospitable of him. The only aspect to my experience that was entertaining but caught me off guard was some of the unprofessional conversations amongst the staff. One of the staff was complaining about how someone owed her money..... then the cook complained how she didn't have anyone to pick her kids up from school and started cursing, while I was eating. One of the other workers told her to hush, and looked at me and said "that poor girl has to listen to this." The same worker told me dont mind us Allie's is like "Payton Place" ..... I thought to myself "huh...Interesting analogy". But I can sorta see that in a sense. Either way I still had a pleasant experience and I can tell the staff act as a dysfunctional family, which is better than acting like dysfunctional enemies. The food is good. The service is prompt, attentive, and courteous. The construction never seems to stop. Yes, the construction. Allie's Cafe is putting in a new floor, but instead of closing the restaurant for three days while they install the floor, they're going PG&E style and doing the construction gradually and allowing people to eat here in between sessions. I'm assuming they work at night, clean up a little--just a little--and then start again after closing. That might be a way to save a few bones here and there, but it makes the dining experience, um, special. In a bad way. Eating here feels like eating in a carpenter's garage: It's not disgusting, and it seems organized, but the floor is beat-up concrete, and it just feels icky. This might fly in a bar, but in a breakfast place? No way. So, sorry, Allie's. Your food is good, and I would definitely come back to give you more tries, but that construction decision was a bad one. I can turn a blind eye to construction and a not-so-updated restaurant to excellent customer service and good food any day. They were working on their floors when I was there, but it was still evident that they were taking pride in cleaning as best they could. Service was quick and spectacular. This place is a local hangout. I came at noon and it was packed! They have a huge menu and a large list of daily specials. So many things looked good! They serve their breakfast most of the day (which would make my husband happy). I ordered the taco soup, market sandwhich, and a salad. The Taco Soup was delicious and the color consistency reminded me of Velveta. It had fresh vegetables and was quite spicy. The sandwhich was tasty and so was the salad. It was processed meat; however, for the price of this place I wasn't expecting gourmet. It is home cooking, similar to what your grandma might make. Plus, my brother was in town... and he was ready for some seriously good home cooked breakfast. I was too lazy to provide this service... So, we made the trip over to Mishawaka Ave. The cafe was seriously swamped. You could tell the waitresses were overwhelmed but the scene was not chaotic. Service was smiling and the chaos seemed contained. Our waitress was fantastic from the start.... I WISH I COULD REMEMBER HER NAME!!! She explained the wait in an apologetic but not overly sappy manor, brought us our coffee quickly, and put in our appetizer order within 5 minutes of sitting down (P.S. fun detail-- they have all different kinds of mugs. None of them match. It's like you are going to your grandma's house with all the wonderfully kitschy, cheesy coffee mugs you could find. I love it) For an appetizer, we got bacon wrapped in pancake batter with a side of syrup... my arteries aren't clogged yet... but I would eat these again even if they were. So yummmm! I got the all you can eat breakfast. It was 10 bucks and change... and it was literally all you can eat. Biscuits and gravy, pancakes, eggs, toast, potatoes, and choice of meat (I got bacon). That alone is worth the 10.95.... which... I could only eat 1 serving.... but if I could manage it, I could have kept going at no extra charge. Everything was perfect, cooked to order, and EXACTLY what I was looking for to get a taste of a little bit of everything. This is definitely a go to breakfast place for me... We ate here on a Saturday around lunch time and we waited 25-30 minutes for our food and our waitress didn't even bring us refills. We watched her walk past our food 3 times and when we got it it wasn't even hot, and my syrup was warmer than my food. I got the French toast and it says on the menu "dipped in vanilla and cinnamon" and I got it and it tasted like plain bread. We were almost late to where we needed to be because our waitress asked us who was wasting their food when we said we didn't want 3 boxes. Not impressed. read more

I live not too far from Allie's and while they have been under construction for quite some time, both their food and service are amazing. They offer biscuits and gravy, and reubens which are two things I am always on the prowl for. Their biscuits and gravy are slightly above average: I would place them about a step above I-Hop; that said, while they are good they aren't "the ones." Their reubens are very good however; of the 50 or so places I've tried, Allie's ranks in the top 5. I've ordered a reuben now several times and am never really disappointed. They have a melted chicken and cheese sandwich which I would also recommend and for those of you who love breakfast and can eat a lot, they have a never-ending breakfast plate. I want to say it runs $10 or $12 and you have as many refilled plates as you can eat; you can choose from eggs, meats, hash browns, pancakes, biscuits and gravy... pretty much anything their short-order cook can whip up for you that is break-fast related and can fit on a plate. They are very good about honoring this too; I once took someone to breakfast and they ordered the refill breakfast option and ate five or six plates. The staff didn't even bat an eye. The staff is very kind and the entire restaurant is family oriented. There is a lot of ample seating so if you are looking for a place that can serve a large group that isn't a commercial venue, this is definitely your place. The atmosphere is also great for children and their children's menu has a variety of both classic diner items and healthy alternatives. They are even willing to swap out things like children's applesauce for their fruit of the season. I requested this once (my daughter doesn't eat applesauce) and we didn't even get an upcharge. I would recommend Allie's to just about anyone. Provided you don't mind the mid-construction look, this is definitely a place to be. read more

The coffee is fresh, all it takes is a nod for a refill as there's always a friendly face with a pot looking to top off your cup. The food is always consistently good, the portions usually afford you enough to be filled up and take a little home for later. Rarely do we wait more than 20-30minutes for a table. I've know of this place for many years, and finally decided to try it about six weeks ago on. Saturday, The place was packed, but that did not slow down the service. There was no possible way to leave hungry. Since then, I've probably been there 10 times and I don't even live in South Bend. I can't talk to anyone about Allie's without gagging. The last time we were there was for breakfast and as I bit into my sausage it was icy cold and super slimy. My mother-in-law called our waitress and she offered to take the same sausage and "warm it up" . No thanks I couldn't imagine putting anything in my mouth after that. They took away my plate and removed my breakfast from the bill but I noticed afterwards that they still charged for my drink REALLY!! I don't recommend this restaurant to anyone!! No stars!!
