Aldo, our tour guide, was ah-mazing. On this tour we drove from Playa del Carmen to Cenote Maya and Ek Balam. It's a long day, so be prepared, but it was well worth it. First, Aldo speaks several languages: Spanish, French, English and some Italian. Our tour group was mostly French-speaking. I suspect our tour took longer than a tour in a single language, because he repeated everything in both languages, to make sure everyone got the same information. We stopped first at the cenote, after driving though Mayan communities. Aldo was knowledgeable about Mayan history and how the culture has (or in many cases, has not) changed. I did not go in the cenote, but my children and husband loved it. We were not allowed to take photos, though they have a professional photographer there to do it for you. It's about $70US for all of the photos when you are done. We also experienced a ceremony with an Ah Kin (not to be confused with a shaman). Not my favorite part of the trip. It was hot and smokey. It was meant to feel authentic, but it was hard to feel authentic with the young gal in her jeans and "stay strong" tee shirt and her camera lurking during the ceremony. Anyway, the history was interesting and worth the trip. And it was short. All Tour Native served lunch after the cenote. It was delicious. Aldo said it changes once in a while, but we had some sort of grilled chicken with rice and beans, tortillas and a delicious Mayan bread called Chayitas. Water and lemonade are free. You can purchase soda and beer. Ek Balam was incredible. It was too hot for me, so I kinda stopped listening to Aldo, but he shared a lot about the history behind the ruins. Ek Balam is apparently the only site where you are still permitted to climb on the ruins. That will change next year. Remember, if you climb the 95 stairs up, you also need to come down. The view was beautiful and worth the climb. It's a long day. But I don't regret it.
We booked tour through our resort, Dreams Natura. The tour was for EK Balam and Cenote Maya. It had come recommend by a friend because its quieter, you can climb on pyramids, and ofcourse the option for rappelling! Needless to say I had high expectations. This tour company exceeded my expectations greatly! Yes we did those things and so much more. They had so many details worked out that made the experience so grand. We got to talk with and learn from local Mayans, who are lovely people. They fed us homemade tacos and even let us make tortillas. My only regret was not buying my souvenirs at Ek Balam. It was a missed opportunity. The tour guide, Nicholas, was awesome. He was super nice and friendly. He was amenable to our needs (which we had) and flexible. Next time I go, I plan to book directly with this group and check out some of their other adventures. Takes vacation to a whole new level!
We did the Mayan Cenote and Ek Balam for a full day. It was great first our guide Hugo was very well spoken and informative. Even found us a bathroom on the way out. The Mayan Cenote was very neat, seeing average life and a shaman. The Cenote of course was amazing to swim and zip in. I chickened on the rappeling. The traditional meal was great. Ek Balam also was amazing, again Hugo filled us in about it. It is a long day but a lot of fun!
This was a great tour. Eli took very good care of us. He was extremely accommodating with food allergies on our lunch meal, made it fun, he even got the ac in van running before got in to make sure it was nice and cold for our group. We did tulum and the jungle maya tour for $99 through our hotel. I would definitely ask for eli if your nervous about traveling around mexico. He will make sure you are safe and sound, along with providing a great experience!
My husband and I booked a tour to visit Chichen Itza and Cenote Maya this past week. Oh..my... the value of this tour was insane! Our tour guide ALDO was amazing. During the ENTIRE day he had the best energy and spirit. Incredibly knowledgeable and FUNNY! He really made it a special day. The sites we got to experience were rich in history and absolutely amazing. We had a great time meeting some others on the tour and learning more about rural Mexico. The cenote was INSANE! Beautiful. Repelling was so exciting. We'll never forget that day, and we're so glad we bought the USB of photos taken at the cenote! Thank you for the beautiful experience!!
Alright. My partner and I were staying in playa del carmen and booked several HORRIBLE excursions via our hotel. After those, i turned to yelp to explore alternative places to tour. We choose this location via yelp reviews and it paid off. We choose to do emotions park (early morning) we had been the only ones in the tour and it was basically private pickup and drop off close to PDC and then we had our own tour guide. No cameras were allowed but we felt like we had our own photographer and for about 100 photos we paid 54USD for a link which was easy to use and upload. Well worth it. The food was amazing. The Mayan blessing by the wise man was great and our guide Benji was top notch and very proud to show us his beautiful country!!!
We booked the Chichen Itza -Maya Cenote Tour thru our Resorts Travel services. We wanted a more personal tour if both sites. Our tour van was on time and we were warmly greeted. Expectations for the day were clearly given and we also received a lunch bag that had enough to keep us nourished they the morning. Our English speaking tour guide "Charlie" was very knowledgeable outgoing and attentive. The trip to Chichen Itza was mostly comfortable with the exception of some pretty cramped leg room in the van. The trip there did include multiple stops to pick up passengers, which ate into some of the overall time. We were fortunately allowed a bathroom stop as it was getting time to. Once we arrived is where my only criticism of this excursion began. Charlie did an excellent job in giving our group great lessons into the why Mayans thought about their world during the time they occupied the area. He used a tablet to describe several interesting facts. However, due to the schedule, the actual time spent at each important historical spot was very rushed. Less than 5 minutes was spent in front of the great temple, same with in front of the Observatory. The Ball court we quickly took individual pictures and then we were out. Looking so forward to our time there, we felt cheated out of an opportunity to really look around. Suggestion to Alltournative is to allow one more hour onsite so folks can do a bit more exploring and photo taking. We left for Maya Cenote where we met with a Mayan Priest, had a fantastic lunch, and an epic time playing and swimming inside the magical cave Cenote. Certainly the highlight of the trip. So worth it and the water was so refreshing after a hot stop at Chichen. The drive back was a bit brutal as we drove thru small village after village, where thru everyone is a set of speed bumps that slow you to a crawl. No potty stops were allotted, so another suggestion is to find a consistent place on the way back to accommodate those who may wish to go to the bathroom. Our day started at 6:45a and we returned at 6:00pm. Overall the rating is a five for the attention of the driver and guides, the food, Staff and the experience swimming and playing in the Cenote. A grade of 3 is for the time allotted at Chichen Itza, the cramped leg room in the van and the lack of awareness of the trip back details. I would do another tour with this Company again but perhaps not to Chichen Itza unless they decide to add more time.
While in Cancun on vacation, my sister and I booked the Coba Mayan Encounter with Alltournative, through our hotel concierge. It is expensive, but you get to do SO MUCH. BUT BE AWARE: this is not for the faint of heart. Or...you don't have to do *every*thing that is included. We were picked up from our hotel at 7am in a 14 person passenger van. I really liked that this tour is smaller in size, in comparison to the Chichen Itza day trip we had gone on previously. But really, it needs to be, considering the activities you do! You drive an hour and a half or so to the first stop of the day...on some pretty tight non-highway roads, through some little pueblos. At the first stop, you change in to your swimsuit under your clothes. WEAR CLOTHES THAT YOU DON'T MIND GETTING WET. And...bring a change of clothes that you can be active in. ANYway....you begin with a safety training and getting strapped in to your harness. And then it is time to rappel down the rock face. It is easier and less scary than I was expecting, but if you don't deal well with that kind of adrenaline rush or with heights and whatnot...skip this part of the tour. You then hike on out of where you just went into,cross a suspension footbridge and zipline back to the start! After another brief drive to another area, you kayak a short distance to the other side of a waterway. And when you get out, it is time to hike to the cenote for some underground swimming. Before entering the cenote, there is a Mayan ceremony and blessing. The cenote is more like cave-swimming. It was beautiful! And they have plenty of photographers along the way to document it all for you. Which is good...because this not an adventure that I would recommend taking your phone along with you. And the photos turned out great. ($70 for all of them on a USB, with a t-shirt...a pretty great price, compared to other excursions I have been on!) After all that you put your clothes back on over your wet suit and hike a little further. But no more kayaking...one last zipline back to the van. And then...it is time to eat. Tasty, white-people-ified (bland-ed down, if you will) Mexican and Mayan food. The fresh, fried dough was the best...because duh. Fried dough. And the hibiscus tea was delicious. You have a little time to change, chill out, buy your photos, and drink a coffee, before getting back on the van to go to Coba. A much shorter van jaunt until the next stop. We stretched for a minute and got some water while our tour guide, Israel (who was with us throughout the entire day) got our tickets. He took us inside the site, gave us a run down of what we were seeing. Then we got about an hour and a half to roam the site on our own before the van left to take us back. To get around Coba, you can do it on foot, rent a bike for a time, or ride the "princess taxi" (as our guide called it)....a pedi-cab. We decided to walk *to* the main ruin and then, after I climbed to the top and back down again, we decided to take a pedi-cab back to the entrance. Worth every penny, at that point. Getting up to the top of the ruin is not a hard as you might imagine! The view is nice, but if you aren't game for the climb I'll be honest and tell you that you aren't missing anything spectacular, but it is still pretty cool. The climb back down is harder than the climb up. The steps are worn down and slick. So wear good shoes. And for real, there is no shame in booty-scooting your way back down! Our concierge originally told us we would be back around 7:30pm, but we were home much closer to 5:30. I would have liked a little more exploration time at Coba, but honestly, there was so much fit in to the day, I really can't complain! If you love physical activities, adventure, and your historical exploration mixed with some heart-pumping adrenaline, I HIGHLY recommend the Coba Mayan Encounter with Alltournative!
We booked the Tulum Jungle Maya tour, and this day trip was nothing less than amazing! Mata was our tour guide and he was awesome! Our pick up was at 7:45am at the lobby of our hotel in a large, air conditioned, comfortable van. Our trip started in Tulum, which was about a 35 minute drive from our hotel (we were the last to be picked up.. not sure how long everyone else was in the van before us). We got to Tulum early and beat the large crowds and the heat, which was nice. We had a short guided tour of the the ruins with some information about the Mayan culture, and then he let us go to explore on our own. We had a total of 2 hours at the ruins, and then met back at our meeting spot. There are gifts shops around so leave yourself some time to browse if you're interested in purchasing something. After this, we boarded back into our van and drove about 15 minutes to the Jungle Maya site. This part was so fun! We loaded into a unimog and rode about 5 or 6 minutes into the jungle. We did repelling, snorkeling, cenote swimming, and zip lining, and everything was awesome! Mata was really funny, and he was really attentive and knowledgeable as well (his English was also very good!). I'm not going to go into detail about everything we did, because I don't think yelp will allow me that much space, haha. Everything was REALLY fun, and we never once felt like anything was unsafe or unorganized- they're very mindful about the safety and comfort of their guests, and it's obvious. Also, the lunch was great! It was a buffet of traditional maya food served in a hut, and it was really good! You can't take a camera or any kind of electronic device, so there are people all around every activity taking pictures and video, and honestly, they're way better shots than you'd ever get taking your own pictures so it's nice. You do have to purchase them if you want them, and they're pricey, but we bought the package that came with all the pictures and video uploaded to a thumb drive plus a printed photo of your choice and it was $70 (just 1 printed photo is $30, so it's a way better value to just buy the whole thing). They also include shots of the cenotes you swim in and the ruins in Tulum, so it's pretty nice to have all that in my opinion. I definitely recommend the Tulum Jungle Maya tour with this company. They were professional and fun, and we definitely got our money's worth! Just an fyi for this tour- you can't wear any sunscreen or bug repellent while doing the jungle activities.. and even if you try, they make you shower at the very beginning to rinse is all off (it's to maintain the purity of the cenotes). Also, they do provide you with towels so you don't need to bring any. They also lock all of your things in a locker, so whatever you bring will stay safe while you're there!
Me and 5 of my friends booked alltournative to go visit the Mayan pyramids. Euri was so amazing! She came with great energy! She was very intelligent and she taught us a lot about the Mayan ruins. We went to an amazing underground lake in a cave. She went above and beyond to make us happy and accommodate all of our needs! I will definitely request her if we ever go back to Mexico. We had a once in a lifetime experience that day and we will never forget it!!
Coba Maya Ruins Tour was boot camp-like, in the funnest way possible. Kayaking, bike riding, hiking up a temple, tube-ing inside a sinkhole, rappelling and ziplining. The good news is that you get a coffee break in the morning, time to shop local handmade goods, and fed an awesome buffet of spicy and vegetarian friendly food at the end. Our group had about 10 people in it. Along the hike, we visited a shaman where we were blessed. This was a cool and moving experience. I felt a lump growing in my throat during the ritual. Do not take your own photos with the shaman. A photographer follows you the entire time and those photos are available for purchase at the end. We ziplined 2-3 different times along our hike. There's a flat area that's a few miles long where you're given the option of walking, renting a bike, or hiring a bike taxi before meeting up with another guide. Along the path, there are places to stop and snap pics. I have a crazy fear of heights, but had to climb to the top of the temple. Take your time here, the rocks are quite steep and can be wobbly and uneven. There's a sturdy rope to hold on to that extends down the middle of the pyramid. I crawled down because I am a chicken, but the majority of the tourists were doing the same. Make sure you have your bathing suit underneath your clothes. There's an area of outdoor showers, where you are required to rinse off all products used on your hair and body before entering the cenote. The Mayans are mindful of keeping the waters pure and safe for wildlife. It is here that you have the option of putting on a life vest. One by one, you rappel into a cenote and onto an inner tube that's waiting down below. The sinkhole is dark and peaceful. It's a much needed cool respite after a day of hiking under the sun. By the end of the afternoon you will be exhausted. When you reach the kayak portion of the tour, that is the last push. Dig deep because you'll be paddling toward lunch. The food was so good. Very vegetarian friendly, too. I was pleasantly surprised to find a dish with tvp. Thomas was our tour guide who also served as interpreter. He was extremely charming and made this experience fun and memorable. Be sure to bring extra cash for tips. The Mayans rely on tourism and survive off of tips.
The absolute best! We chose the Tulum Jungle Adventure tour because it had something for mom (archeological sites) and something for the teen (rappeling, ziplining). It exceeded expectations in every possible way. The group was small - ten people - so you get good personal attention and can move at a reasonable pace. Our guide was Miguel, and he was super friendly and helpful. We started our tour at Tulum, which is a seaside Mayan temple and village. It isn't as massive as Chichen-Itza, but what it lacks in spectacle it more than makes up for in being relatively uncrowded, and very relaxed, with some fun local color - people taking your photos with giant iguanas, and some lemurs that my daughter fed a tortilla. The tour allowed us just the right amount of time for a guided section and time to wander and explore on our own. Then we went on to the Jungle site, switching from our comfy van to a giant army surplus open jeep. It's a rollicking ride - sit in the back for maximum bumps! Once there, everything goes into a locker, you change into a swimsuit, and your next stop is a hole in the ground that leads to one of the underground caves -you rappel down. Here's where the rubber meets the road: I am not an athletic person, and I was terrified. Miguel said, no worries, I could just walk around, but in the end, the other travelers and Miguel made me feel comfortable enough that I took the plunge - so to speak - and did it. It was so fun and after that? NO FEAR. We spent the rest of the afternoon on five different ziplines, one of which ends in a water plunge in a cave, where we spent 45 minutes snorkeling among the stalagmites and stalacites. Somewhere in there we had a Mayan purufication ceremony, and a lunch cooked by a local family, that was just to die for - chicken in red sauce, and rice that I would cook every night if I could duplicate the recipe. My kid - world's pickiest eater - went for second helpings. At the end, you have the chance to buy photos - just a couple or all of them on a flash drive. The prices are fairly reasonable, especially compared to area resorts. There was even video of us heading down one of the ziplines. We had a fantastic day - it was worth every penny, and I unreservedly recommend this tour, our guide Miguel, and the company.

Amazing trip, and Oscar was the best. We did zip lines, repelling, swam in a cenote, had lunch, and visited Coba. Highly recommended. Oscar was great with everyone in the group, and including my daughter, we had two teenager girls that had a blast. read more

We did the Tulum and Jungle Maya tour, and it was the highlight of our trip. And that's saying a lot, considering we also swam with whale sharks! Gustavo was our guide, and he made the trip a lot of fun. He was very knowledgable about the area, and SUCH a funny guy!! Ask for Gustavo, for sure. I highly recommend him. Looking out for your safety and ensuring you have a good time is second nature for him! We started off in the Jungle Maya Park, which I believe is owned by Alltournative. There are a number of similar parks in the area, all owned by various tourist companies. I can't speak for the others, but I can say that Alltournative's Jungle Maya Park was very respectful of the environment, and well preserved while also being comfortable and easily navigated. This portion of the tour (as opposed to the Tulum portion which was dampened somewhat by the heat and lack of shade) was the best part of the day! We started with a 4x4 ride into the park, which was fun. It almost felt like a rollercoaster! First thing, then, was the Mayan purification ceremony. I'm not sure if the old Mayan shaman was either Mayan or a "shaman," or maybe just an old local, but he played the part well, at least! I suppose I should give him and them the benefit of the doubt, huh? ;) Forgive my skepticism! The purification ceremony really was cool, though. The shaman explained to the land that we were there with good and respectful intentions, and asked for our protection. It set the tone very well for the rest of the excursion. One of my favorite parts: We got to ride five different zip lines! Each time was as exciting as the last. Even the brief climb up to each of the zip line towers was fun! One of the zip lines had a water landing, and everyone I saw got turned around when they hit the water. So ladies (and fellas, I suppose): be careful not to lose your bottoms! No one in our group did, but a couple people came close! But yes, the zip lines were a lot of fun. That was the closest I've ever felt (and the closest I ever want to feel, frankly) to Sly Stallone in Cliffhanger! We also rappelled down into one of the cenotes (stopping for a kiss and picture on the way, of course!), which I haven't done since I was a Boy Scout, and my girlfriend had never done. Nothing will make you feel more adventurous than hanging from a rope and slowly lowering yourself into a cave! But don't worry, it was perfectly safe and secure. We never felt even close to being in danger. Now may be a good time to point out that Christine and I were the youngest couple in our group (with the exception of a father-son pair, the son probably being around 12-13 years old). The other couples were probably in their mid-50s. So it's fun for all ages! Snorkeling in the cenote was my girlfriend's favorite experience from the whole trip. It was absolutely BEAUTIFUL in the cave! The stalactites and stalagmites were fun to explore (but don't touch!), and the sunlight coming in through the natural openings at the top of the caves, shining spotlights into the crystal clear water and illuminating the natural beauty... It was just an otherworldly experience. Indescribable beauty. It reminded me of an environment in the Tomb Raider games, if that helps! Gustavo pointed out the small fish in the water and the occasional fruit bat along the ceiling of the cave without disturbing them. The respect for the natural environment was clear throughout the tour. The lunch consisted of lentil soup, chicken, black beans, Mexican rice, plantains, and empanadas. All you can eat, and very satisfying! Forgoing the chicken and empanadas allowed for a filling and well-rounded vegan/vegetarian lunch, fyi. Tulum was fun also, but the real highlight was the Jungle Maya tour described above. The Tulum ruins were impressive to see in person, but there was very little shade throughout this portion of the tour. Being early August, the heat was borderline unbearable, and made us a little impatient to get through the ruin tour, honestly. Fortunately, the gorgeous Tulum beach was waiting for us to jump in and cool off! Seriously, the Tulum beach was even more beautiful than the Cancun beach. There's something about steeply dropping cliffs giving way to a white sand/crystal blue water beach that just can't be matched. All in all, the Tulum-Jungle Maya tour was an incredible experience, and Gustavo was the perfect guide. Highly recommend! read more

We went on the Talum/Coba tour with Alex. We had an amazing time! Alex was very thorough, and knowledgeable, as well as personable. The ruins were breathtaking, and the cenote was magical. A delicious authentic lunch was provided. Also, the Mayan village was a very eye opening experience. All told, we had an amazing day. Thanks Alltournative! read more

For our first tour in Cancun my husband and I chose the Jungle Maya tour. Our tour guide Israel was very amiable, accommodating and funny as heck. He was our driver to the tour and our guide. One of my fears is heights and I overcame that in order to rappel down a hole into a cenote which are Mother Nature made beautiful underground caves with crystal clear mineral water. We got to zip line sixty feet above the jungle and the last zip line was into a cenote how refreshing and exhilarating. The last activity involved in snorkeling the longest underground river system and words can't describe the beauty. We topped off our your with a wonderfully authentic Mexican meal and it was superb. For a wonderful day out off the beaten path I highly recommend this tour. read more

Alltournative is by FAR the best ecotour company in the Riviera Maya. Me and my friends chose the Jungla Maya tour and the Cenote Maya. Both where excelent! Ziplines where in perfect conditions (the best I have experienced around here), The Cenotes are beautiful (Specially Cenote Maya) ,food was delicious and the staff very friendly and helpful. Cynthia from Grupos provide us with the best info to chose our tour and our guide Hugo The Boss had great maya history knowledge and speaks very well english. Highly Recommended. read more

This was truly an amazing tour group that was recommended by a travel guide once we got to our hotel. Our tour guide name was Pepe and he told us what kind of activities we were going to do step-by-step. He was very active with us giving us a little history of the area as well as making sure we had enough water to drink. That was important as the humidity was unbearable at times but nothing that should stop you because the tour was so much fun. Pepe made sure we were safe at all times instructing us how to put the gear on with help from his other crew that was there also. With this tour group they also made sure we had food to eat which was tasty and made from the locals of the area. The final activity we were able to do was climb up the temple at Cobá such a beautiful view. Made it seem as if you're on top of the world. I truly recommend that you take a tour with them as you won't be disappointed. read more

Wow! Amazing! I am still breathless from our two excursions with this group! Driver Amelia was fantastic and SO nice- our tour guide at Jungle Maya/Tulum, Roby was off the chart awesome! So full of knowledge and tons of energy and fun! Wish we had more time to do more with this tour group- do NOT hesitate one bit, they are worth it! read more

We did the jungle maya tour with Eduardo Market HANDS DOWN THE GREATEST TOUR GUIDE EVER. This man sung red hot chilli peppers and other 90's hits songs to and from the sites, was extremely knowledgeable about Mayan culture and taught us so much. He has worked in different countries all over the world and can relate to anyone. The activities were fun filled with a tour of Tulum, zip lining, repelling, and snorkeling. If you decide to book this trip (which I highly do) please do yourself a favor and ask for Eduardo Market. I promise you that he alone will make your vacation worth it as he did ours. read more

My husband and I did this when we went on our honeymoon a few weeks ago and it was amazing! We did the Mayan adventure where we got to canoe, zip line, eat an authentic Mayan lunch and rappel into a cenote! We then went to Coba which was absolutely incredible! It just seemed unreal everything was so big and beautiful! Our tour guides were amazing and so knowledgeable which made it so fun to learn about everything! It rained on us and it was still fantastic! The humidity was a killer, but that's what happens when you venture into the jungle! Definitely recommend if you are looking for a full day excursion! (It will take all day and you will be pooped by the time you are done, but it's worth it!) read more

What an amazing day spent in the Mayan village & Coba! You could tell Mela, our guide, loved what she does. The food was amazing & being able to hike to the top of Coba is an experience we will never forget! read more

My husband and I are currently on the ride back to our resort with Alltournative after the Chichen-Itza and Cenote Maya full day tour. We have had a wonderful day away from our Cancun resort and couldn't recommend this company and this particular tour highly enough. For this tour we were picked up around 7am and picked up other guests until approximately 8am - there were a total of 16 people taking the tour. During the 2-hour drive from the last resort to Chichen-Itza, our guides German and Gustavo (with Guadalupe driving) (sp?) gave us wonderful historical information for the Yucatán and the Maya. We spent 2 hours touring the Chichen-Itza historical site. Bottled water and umbrellas were provided. We then drove to Cenote Maya where we enjoyed a traditional buffet, were blessed by a Mayan elder at a ceremony, and then entered the cenote. Those that were not afraid of heights repelled into the cave/water! The two of us on the tour that were afraid of heights walked down the stairs. Once inside the cenote there were two zip lines and multiple platforms for jumping. There were also inner tubes and snorkel masks. After leaving the cenote we were able to change into dry clothes and enjoy a wonderful margarita. read more
