First of all, I am only giving this place 2 stars because it's only $5. Beyond that, it is scary. We walked in to the pitch black (15 minutes before the movie started) and used our phones to find seats. We went through multiple seats to find two next to each other that weren't broken or wet. Someone finally went to tell them that the lights were off and they finally turned them on. We were better off having the lights off because wooooow. It's scary. I wanted to check out this independent movie theater in Clifton New Jersey. Upon entering I saw that they didn't have any popcorn drinks or any good snacks . The theater had a pretty strange funky odor. The seats in the screening room that I went to were not in very good shape. The screen also had some strange stuff on it making it an unpleasant movie experience. The staff were barely friendly. Looks like they really don't care about the Theatre and they're not up keeping it well at all. This is very unfortunate but I have to recommend not going here visit another multiplex area or another independent theater read more

So I came here for a matinee against my better judgement and all the one star yelp reviews. Should definitely trust yelp instincts 4 eva next time. Parking was easy enough, they have a huge lot and you've gotta just run back and put a little parking pass they give you upon entering. There was one guy manning the front which I'm pretty sure is the guy that's also cleaning this whole place. I don't blame them because they aren't a busy cinema but it was dirty as hell. When you walk in the place is actually really nice. Everything has a very cool decor. Carpet is nice, walls are a white textured look. The actual cinema rooms are a different story. So we landed in cinema 5, it was super tiny. Just us and one other person there and THANK GOD. The seats aren't at a slight angle at all. If someone tall sits in front of you you're doomed. Even just the chairs in front of you cut off some of your view. Oh and none of the chairs I tried actually reclined, good thing they were comfy and spacious as is. When we arrived the movie was basically already starting, no previews and it was super dark so I whipped out the flashlight on my phone and the seats really were dirty, crumbs all over the place. Like would a little dirt devil action hurt? The room had no carpet, it was just weird. You can tell they put a lot into the presentation of the hallway and entrance of the place but none into where we'll actually be sitting for the whole movie. The sound was also off during the movie. There were points when I couldn't hear the music being played or the voices of the actors. I'll pay the 10 bucks and go to kerasotes anyday. read more

OK came here because the timing was perfect....caught a 535pm Deadpool showing....every dine in was practically sold out so gave this place a chance BECAUSE it had recliner seats. Wellllllllll let's say I had the heebee geebees....The theater is very small.....about 5 seats in each row....3 rows to the left and right side....I saw 2 seats "out of service" and lots of leftover popcorn....run down theater....just dirty. Here's a breakdown: After 5pm adult tix are $8.50 and children and senior citizens are $7 Before 5pm all tix are $7 All day Tuesdays are $5 So I can't knock this place because movies like AMC or Regal theaters are pricey and for people who don't want to spend a lot....if you don't mind the run down theater.....then ok come here but I wouldn't come back.....bathrooms were bleh....seriously run down. I used to love to go to this theater. Comfy seats, usually deserted or not a lot of people around, and very, very cheap prices for current movies. Now they have no air, no popcorn, the bathrooms aren't maintained like they used to be, and in general they are not maintaining the place. As a result, I found a free streaming service for new movies online and that's where I'm going to be watching my movies from now on, from my couch! read more

Allwood Cinema is now PERMANENTLY CLOSED. A phone call to the realtor revealed that the theater closed late in 2022, and all equipment, fixtures, furniture, props, and seating were removed a couple of months ago. The owner is looking to sell, and as of 6/19/23 an offer has been made to buy the building and property for the purpose of converting it to another type of business. There will be no further attempts to use this building as a movie theater of any kind. read more

It's not a clean facility, but I didn't find it filthy either. The chairs where at least very comfortable, and you cannot beat the price. Movies can cost up to three times more then what this movie theater charges, and it's the same movie. If I'm taking my kid to a movie this is definitely where I am going. read more

For such a small theater this place has horrible customer service. I came to see a movie about a year ago. I couldn't get past the first 20 minutes BC their air conditioner wasn't working and it was mid-summer. The attendants in the front said they couldn't give me a refund but they'd give me two passes to redeem at a later time for the inconvenience. Finally, a movie I want to see is out. The Lion King. I'm currently 36 weeks pregnant and dragged my behind out the house in hot and hazy weather to enjoy it. Get to the theater and one of the atrendants says it's fine to use for my selected movie. The manager, I'm assuming, chimes in and says that because it's the first week- I actually can't use the pass. I explained the only reason I even have a pass is BC I paid for a movie originally that I couldn't enjoy BC of the theater's era. She says "I understand but you can't use it for the first week." This was never mentioned by the attendants who gave me the pass and the back of the card is blank so there's no way for me to have known that prior to wasting my time, energy and gas!!! I plan to use these passes then NEVER give them another dime. Currently on my way to another theater to pay to watch the movie of my choice. read more

Tonight was an interesting evening at the theater. We come to find out that not all of the rooms have recliners. Luckily the movie we went to see which was The Jungle Book had recliners. There's only 30 chairs and that room and not all of them reclined and it's because they're broken. Another interesting and alarming thing is that the wires that connect the recliner to the electrical outlets are literally scattered all over the place it is an accident waiting to happen. Not to mention that while we were sitting there two people in the theater literally almost flipped forward because the chairs are not bolted or heavy enough to stay down. That's another use instant waiting to happen. This theater is setting themselves up for failure and lawsuits. I pray for the sake of those patrons that go there that this theater does something about fixing those problems ASAP. Now if you're lucky to get a chair that works they do reclining all the way back. Theater room number 3 weather Jungle Book was playing their speaker system was horrible. Its unfortunate that this neighborhood theater is managed so poorly. My family and I love this theater. Perhaps it is a sentimental thing since I grew up across the street. If you are used to the super nice big theater at the mall, you're not going to get it and will most likely hate it. I can't stand the theater at the mall with the huge crowds and annoying children and obnoxious people yelling. This is a much calmer experience. My dad goes here all the time to watch movies for work. But, it is smaller and less comfortable. Yes, there's barely any parking and the theater is old and not in great shape. But it's been there for years and is a pillar of the community, a relic of sorts, and also isn't a cesspool of annoying teenagers *grumpy face* (I swear I am 28 and not 78). It's great when you want to watch a movie in moderate peace, but not at home. Also, QuikChek is down the street and great for cheap snacks. Tickets are cheaper than AMC. It was recently announced (May?) that this theater would be closing for good but the most recent development has been new ownership. My understanding is that the theater would be closed for renovations but then will reopen its doors again under the new owner. So perhaps once it gets a bit of a makeover, you can give it another chance? read more

I recently took my two young daughters to your theater in Clifton, NJ - the Allwood Theater to see Hotel Translyvania 3 and needless to say, we had an awful experience. Please allow me to explain my experience. We arrived in the lobby and were behind 4 or 5 other customers. There were 3 young men behind the counter, two of whom didn't seem to be doing anything more than just standing there. The one man (who I later found out was the "manager" was the one helping the next in line). It was a blistering hot day and there was zero air conditioning in the lobby. My children and I were right inside the second set of doors which lead into the lobby. People began to gather behind us between the first set of doors (which led from outside) and the second set of doors. The line was moving at a snails pace, especially with 3 workers behind the counter. Very quickly people in line were becoming audibly frustrated by the lack of progress being made and also the extreme heat that was not quelled once inside. Other people who were exiting the theater were telling us in line to "get out while you can", describing how unbearably hot it was inside the theater. Someone in line asked the manager if the air conditioning was turned on and his response was, "It's on a little bit". Most people in line took this as a big fat 'NO'. With that response, one wiser man than I took his family of four out of line and said he would never return. Another couple followed them out and were criticizing the management on their way out. When we got into line my children wanted a particular kind of candy that was displayed in the case and the worker told me that he was out. My daughter asked for another candy and once again the worker told us that he was out. Regardless, we went into the theater and what we experienced is completely unacceptable - severely torn and decrepit seating (most seats were completely missing cupholders (it was a hole that goes down the floor where the cup holder lining used to be, now stuffed with garbage. Most seats were half-broken and greasy as hell. I was completely appalled. The floor hadn't been cleaned, it was like a sauna inside - I heard everyone complain at least once about the lack of air conditioning. Lastly, the screen was crooked! Are you serious??? Is this how a business should be run? Even while drinking water, my youngest daughter was becoming dizzy inside the theater so we had to leave early. I asked for a refund and I was of course denied. I gave the benefit of the doubt my first experience about two years ago, which was also terrible. I thought you would have pulled your business together to prove you care about your patrons but you clearly have managed to further bury your business and prove that you could care less. Even when I had spoken candidly to your employees, they agreed - you don't care nor do you spend the effort in maintaining your business. They told me that it had been brought to your attention about the air conditioner and that you had done NOTHING. I want to be clear that this is NOT the fault of your employees, but rather 100% YOU. As a business owner, I know that a successful business cannot be run even with help if the people who are helping do not have the right tools or resources. Allwood Theater is a health hazard, completely unsanitary, and should be avoided at all costs. This was my second (and last) time that I will be seeing a show there. You and your business are a complete disgrace and I am going to spread my experiences to others so that hopefully they don't make the same mistake as I did. ^^^ This is what I emailed the owner and I encourage you to call or email directly to express your thoughts. Compared to a lot of movie theaters, this one is REALLY outdated. I did come here almost every week b/c they used to have free movies on Tuesday with an optimum card and its the closest theater to my house. However, parking is horrible, theater is so outdated and uncomfortable. And if you are short like me and someone sits directly in front of you, you are done for. I also believe as of June 1st, optimum stopped offering the free movies so really no point in coming here. read more

Let's begin when I walked in they weren't giving any refunds and the ticket was $10 on a Sunday before noon. When trying to order refreshments they didn't have any fountain drinks, slushee I have a health condition and can't be without cold drinks. there was also no AC. The theater was extremely dark I felt like I was in the womb again. There was a drip from the ceiling that we of first thought was a ghost. Theater may be haunted. also when the screen went all white we saw what I presume can only be blood coming down the screen. Would come back again tbh. Last Friday, my children and I experienced a 1:45p.m. showing of Teen Titans Go! To The Movies at Allwood Cinemas in Clifton, New Jersey; their periodic email arrived inside my Gmail inbox just a day or two before the plans were made for our afternoon excursion. Upon arrival to the the corner of Market Street and Lyall Road I was accosted by a resident from her front door for parking my car on a local road - this after unbuckling my two year-old already, beginning to walk toward the theater. We got back in the car and relocated to a parking lot on Market Street; this lot does not possess a clearly-marked sign for theater parking. The only sign displays a huge warning against parking and an advertisement for the local towing company. We arrived inside the unimpressive lobby of the theater at the same time as a school bus-load of summer camp kids. The theater staff-of-two were seemingly unprepared. And, eventually, a young man began to help us at the counter. I ordered a bucket of popcorn and two medium Icee drinks. The lobby is small and relatively undecorated by anything other than a strangley placed, oversized throne and a display case with nothing relevant to the atmosphere of an outdated movie house lacking any charm. After I signed for the bill, the cashier provided a strange warning to "look out for the pole", and I proceeded to theater 4 with my 10 and 2 year-old girls to watch Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. Within a few steps of entering the small, dark theater, I walked into a black, invisible pole, nearly crushing an Icee into my chest. Fortunately, I did this before my two children could run into the structure, potentially causing serious injury, ruining the experience entirely. We traversed a few rows to find several available, large, leather seats from which to choose. Sound was good in the theater, but the projection was easily three feet below the bottom of the screen for the duration of the film. The theater appeared to be clean upon a quick visual inspection of the seats. After examining the bill - this included merely a final price, no tax, non-itemized - I was appalled at the charge of $53.82. I called the theater to confirm pricing, and here's what I found out: *The 1:45p.m. showing was non-matinee, so I was charged $10 and each child cost $8 *The cost of each medium-sized Icee was $7.50 *The cost of a bucket of popcorn was $12.84 Let's compare the cost of AMC concession stand prices. According to movietheaterprices.com, a large popcorn at AMC costs between $8.10-$9.09, and a medium Icee $5.59-$5.79. Matinee pricing, as per Quora, runs $5.00-$5.79 on a Tuesday; I realize this was a Friday, but let's be honest, there were (including us) only 7 people in the theater on an opening day afternoon in the summer - this is a sad showing. Therefore, for an old-time, local theater experience, Allwood Cinemas is not worth it, except for the seats. The seats have buttons to recline but they don't. In fact, I'm not sure that they're even secured to the ground as I put my foot up on the seat in front of me and it moved. The theater had not been cleaned at all that day (or perhaps all week). There was trash left all over. The room wasn't well lit at all. The bathroom stinks like urine (mens room). Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids. There were a lot of young kids there maybe because it's the only place they can walk to. I was a little bit leery because of the negative reviews, but I just went to see John Wick 3 in theater number two and had a very nice time! The employees were personable, the facility, while older, is far from run down, and the seats were wide, comfortable, plenty of legroom, and as far as I could see the floor was swept clean. I feel that nowadays with all the modern amenities, a regular neighborhood theater now seems "run down". I think this is a nice little place, and given the ticket prices, and the fact that they have first-run movies, I can guarantee that I will be coming back to see more movies here! Went to see Coco last night with my family which included my 3 yr. old granddaughter. The theater was dirty, the floor looked like it wasn't cleaned in months and the heat was so high I felt I was in a sauna. My husband was afraid to take off his hat because of the filth. My husband spoke to the manager about the filthy condition of the theater and she said, "it is swept after every show." (BS) There is no excuse for such a dirty establishment! This isn't the movie theater you want for the primo-experience and I'll say that flat out. However, if you're looking for something cheap and less busy than average this is perfrct. Movies are $5 all day Tuesdays and $5 any day before 5pm. Plus the place is almost always deserted, which makes for a much more enjoyable movie watching experience (I've had problems with people being way too disruptive at the Clifton AMC). That said, there is really only one actually good theater in this place. Theater 1 has the most seats, the biggest screen, and the nicest chairs. The chairs are just normal movie theater chairs but seem to be brand new. Both of the other theaters I've been to (3 & 4) were comparably kinda crappy. The screens are messy in places and smaller the seats are those big recliner leather ones, but they weren't properly installed so they don't actually recline, they're kinda rickety and move, and the cup holders are actually just holes in the armrests. Worth it for the price and the quiet, but I definitely do like this place in general and will continue coming here when the AMC would be too busy. read more

I booked tickets on fandango for this theater and when I showed up on a 97 degree day I was told by a very rude lady at the front that there was no air conditioning because the owner was too cheap to pay for it. They also have no concessions, which I was glad because the place was filthy and when we attempted to try to watch the movie we couldn't see anything because they had absolutely no lighting at all. Since we couldn't find seats and the temperature inside was over 100 degrees, we left. I have no idea how this business can be allowed to stay open or why they would be open. My tickets were $10 each for a 3pm movie that I could not see. I am in negotiations with Fandango to refund my money. The rude lady at the front told me there is no heat in the winter as well. 2 stars only because they have $5 Tuesdays, if not for that, it would be 1 star. Pros: $5 Tuesdays and other cheaper options available. Cons: This is a raggedy little local theater. Inside is like...terrible looking The floors are not finished, the walls are dull, the seats are not properly installed yet. I went today and learned that they just got recliner chairs.....they are not attached to the floor yet so you can fall out of those when they are not balanced correctly. The floors are undone so it looks really bad. The seats are not angled enough that for shorter people, they cannot see over the seats in front of them (ie. kids and people under 5'2). I don't know what little kids would do. The manager person who was on duty tonight was terribly rude. He was annoyed at having to explain to us a movie was sold out because today was the cheap day and so "what did we expect?"--rude! Then we bought tickets for a later showing at 9:25 and he was like "make sure you don't arrive any later than 9:10" in a demanding voice...when we did arrive at 9:10, the theater was completely empty. =/ When we walked into the theater to sit, there was no lights so we had to use our phones' flashlight function to find our seats. When the manager person came in to turn on the lights, he told us "don't recline too much" in a not-so-nice voice. Maybe it will get better when they finish installing the chairs... But right now, the chairs are comfy because they are couch recliner chairs but they are not attached to the floor so beware you might fall! I recommend taking advantage of their specials deals on different days of the week but aside from that, I'd rather pay more to go to a better theater. read more

I had come here when they first reopened and the place was cheap but it sure was a mess. Presentation is a pet peeve of mine - I go to the movies several times a week and my expectations are pretty simple: comfortable seating, clean facilities, and proper presentation (this means the picture should be bright and in-focus). This place continues to fail - despite its upgrades on the last front. First - the new owners have made some improvements - the hallway leading to the theaters is brighter - they removed the carpeting but it looks pretty nice actually. The theaters - where I spend the bulk of my time while in the complex are still a mess. First, no lights. When an employee (a very nice lady) ran in after I bumped into a beam trying to see to assist came in to turn on the lights, I asked her "why would they keep the theatre so dark" - I was informed this was the policy of management. Great, when some trips over a cup or a popcorn bag...... So danger aside they have reseated the theater with recliners which were very comfortable. The auditoriums themselves are tiny - the theater I sat in had 30 recliners (and I noticed no handicap companion seating area - sorry handicapped patrons). The big problem I had was the presentation: a big line down the middle of the frame. Now in the good ol' 35MM days a big scratch was common in theaters that had crappy film handers (sometimes it was also the lab's fault). But that's common. Now things are digital so that should be a non-issue - when I asked the management about this I was told that the current owners never replaced the port glass in the projection booth. So 1/4th of the screen was blurry, dark and out of focus (presumably where the two pieces of glass met - thus reducing light output). Lazy. Lazy. Lazy. (and cheap) I don't know why they just didn't fix the small stuff first - they went digital after all, what's another few hundred on some new glass. The recliners are nice but what I'd really like good presentation. The theater itself seemed clean (it smelled freshly bleached - a little more like a bathroom than a movie theater but at least it was clean), but the bad presentation for me is a no-go. They had said they were working on it - - we'll see, maybe I'll give them another chance in a few months (I'll call ahead before I head down to the theater though). They did issue a cash refund for my ticket with no problem when I asked "fine, you have this issue but why didn't you tell me before I bought a ticket?" - I left after 20-minutes of Hercules when the problem became obnoxious in the bright outdoor scenes. read more

The only reason this gets 2 stars is because you can go there for free on Tuesdays (Optimum triple play) and the people are nice. Parking is difficult, street parking and a realllly tight lot are the only options. They will tow you if you park at PNC Bank. The entire place is a real throwback to the 40's. The ticket booth is set outside of the theater and the place just looks old. The person working the concession stand is also checking tickets. I can only base my review of the auditrium I sat in. I am not sure how many there are of if there are different "levels" of auditoriums available at this location. We saw a movie in auditorium 2. It is small with very narrow rows and the seats are set looking straight on, but the screen is on an angle tilted to the right. The sound system is laughable and the picture didnt fit on the screen. Initially the picture was bobbing around all over the place but settled down to a slight bob. It was actually pretty ridiculous. If I had paid for my ticket or planned on coming back again I would have said something to the manager, but it wasn't worth my time. (but i do have time to write a review, ha). To add to that 40's feel, throughout the entire movie you can hear the sound of the projector spinning the movie. Also, about every 20 minutes the sound of the movie cut out. The seats are pretty old, rickety, and uncomfortable. Luckily it was the middle of the day and only 10 people were in the theater. The floor is not really graded and the screen is low, so if someone sits a couple rows ahead of you, they will be in the way. All around terrible theater. The AMC in Clifton is FAAAR better and is modern. I have better audio, video, and seating accommodations at home. Will not go again, I advise anyone considering it to change their location. read more

This place is a disaster in every way. They serve cold, bagged popcorn even though they have a popcorn machine. The lobby is dirty. The nasty fake leather seating in the theatre is worse than something that came out of the trash. The screens aren't centered so there's only a few good places to sit. The theatre is lit with a harsh clamp on light that blinds you if you look anywhere near it. And if you put up with all of that, you are rewarded with over 20 minutes of commercials BEFORE previews even start. (And a rude manager who tells you that there's nothing he can do about it. Horrible in every way, and anyone here who says differently is either an owner of the place or lying. What used to be (and could be still) a lovely neighborhood theatre is now a sad, fleabag dump. DO NOT take your kids here. To the owners: Make this a great place like it should be and stop showing 20 minutes of commercials and you will get 5 star reviews. read more

I honestly feel that some of the people's reviews here, are very exaggerated . This place is definitely old school.. But that's what makes it unique. This was my very first time I went here.. And my fiancé and I both enjoyed it very much. So much privacy. Very cozy. No big crowds at all. We watched black mass in the reclining theater. We were very relaxed. There was prolly 6 people watching the movie with us. Yes the floors were stripped bare without the carpet.. And the could've done a little better job cleaning up after each movie.. But honestly, it's really not that bad how the people here fuss about. If you want privacy, no big crowds..and reasonable prices.. Come on over! read more
