My family and I have been loyal customers of Alma's Cakes for yearsssss! We've ordered all kinds of cakes for every occasion you could think of.. (birthdays, baby showers, graduations, etc.) Our most recent experience has left a bad taste in our mouths. This go around, I decided to order a cupcake cake for my husband's and brother in law's 30th birthday. Alma made the number '30' out of 15 cupcakes, and I ordered an additional 6 cupcakes on the side. I was charged $3 per cupcake in the box, even though she sells the same exact cupcake (shape, size, and flavor) for $1.50. She justified this by saying she placed the cupcakes in the shape of a '30' and that requires special work. If you look at the picture I've included, you can see the work is nothing above what a kindergartener could do as far as placement. The cupcakes weren't iced together in a special fashion or anything that would justify charging double for each cupcake. In total, I was charged $55 for 21 cupcakes. Although it is good tasting cake, there is nothing premium about about the cupcakes..basic vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate cupcakes with a dollop of buttercream on the top. If you'd like a cupcake cake from Alma's Cakes, my advice is to buy the cupcakes by the dozen and arrange them yourself once you leave. I'm afraid you've lost a few loyal customers over this. read more

You can't get any better cake than from Alma's! Does that make sense? Ha. My aunt and I discovered Alma's via Internet search and decided to buy a cake from them on a whim. I needed a huge cake for a baby shower. The cake turned out perfect and so delicious! It was beautiful, moist, sweet, the right amount of icing and just what I wanted! The only minor flaw was that they spelled the baby's middle name wrong on the cake but it wasn't a big deal. (See the 3 pictures I added of the cake I ordered for the shower.) Ever since that great experience, my aunt has been buying cakes and pies from Alma's Cakes for every Christmas party every year and some other random get-togethers in between. We're a good customer of their's! And did I mention they are very reasonably priced?! I mean...cheap! My huge baby shower cake was only $50! Let me tell you, when Alma says she has the best tres leches cake in Houston, she is not lying! Not only are her cakes awesome, but they are some of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to deal with. We've been ordering cakes for our children's birthday parties for several years now. We have 3, so that is 3 cakes a year, and we have been happy every single time. We even ordered my sister in law's quinceanera cake from her. All of our orders have always been completed on time. They are always flawless. She has even gone out of her way several times to make suggestions on the designs even if it makes the cake a bit more difficult to make. We've also ordered pecan and pumpkin pies during Thanksgiving which were also the best we've had. They are a bit pricier than most bakeries, but I think their service is worth it. I've ordered from Alma's Cakes 2x and both times I've been very happy with their cakes and their customer service. The first time I didn't order a cake...I bought one of their already made tres leche cakes for my birthday party. When I picked out the cake, they took it to the back to write "Happy Birthday" and when they brought the cake back out, I noticed that they decorated it beautifully with flowers and piping without me even telling them to do so. Alma's bakery came thru and agreed to make my last minute custom cake. I wasn't able to make it to their bakery to explain the design, so I emailed them a picture of the design and wrote down the changes that I wanted. The cake looked amazing...something you would see out of a Cake Boss show episode. At the dinner party, everyone in the restaurant was mesmerized by the cake design. When HEB wouldn't do our sons 8th birthday cake because of the Xbox logo, I went home frustrated and googled bakeries near me. Alma's was first on the list, so I checked it out and the cakes looked perfect. My husband contacted Alma's and asked if they would do our Xbox image and they agreed to without any hesitation. I really liked the texture of the icing--very creamy and natural, as opposed to a store-bought cake. The cake itself was somewhat dry. This holds the cake back from a better rating. Alma's specialty is design. While the cake could have tasted better, it did look absolutely fantastic. Whoever she has making her cakes must have had some serious training.
