This is the type of establishment I would always support. Japanese-owned bakery who took over a previous French bakery. You can see the perfections in everything they do. The bakery itself is simple and clean. Be respectful of the place and help clean up after yourself. Not one customer made a mess there. Everyone are respectful to the sweet owner. The drinks itself are simple, reasonably priced on the cheaper side. Not sweet at all so ask if you want it to be sweeten. Quality and perfect desserts. Just semi-sweet so if you have a crazy sweet tooth, this is not your bakery. Again, prices are extremely reasonable and I see lots of locals who enjoy coming here. This spot is truly a gem. I did not think I would be able to find a Japanese-owned, small business/pastry shop in Texas but we are lucky to have Chez Kobayashi Pastries in Houston! This store is tucked away in the corner of a strip mall so there is plenty of space for parking. The inside has a good number of seats and tables for customers to sit down and enjoy. There is also an area that has children's books- in both Japanese and English! I was thrilled to see some of the books that I grew up with. The glass display showcases a variety of different pastries and sweets. There is also a separate menu above for sandwiches, crepes, and quiches! I was indecisive so I asked the owner for recommendations and she chose the Mont Blanc and Total Raspberry Tart. Both pastries were perfect- the tart has a raspberry cream on the bottom and the fruit was fresh and naturally sweet. Not to mention, the crust was absolutely delicious. The Mont Blanc was just as tasty. The chestnut puree, Chantilly cream, and crust were all *chef's kiss* And the best part of it all is that the pastries were not too sweet (for those of you who are new to Asian pastries, they are meant to be lighter and not overly sweet)! My mentor told me that Chez Kobayashi had her favorite pastries in Houston. This is a mom and pop Japanese bakery that took over an old French bakery. They kept many of the old French pastries and gave them a Japanese twist. They make multiple fruit tarts, crepes, quiches, and croissant sandwiches. They also have a drink menu, and all of their drinks are so cheap. I got there at noon and there was already a line when I walked in. Most of the popular fruit pastries were already sold out so you need to go early for those. I originally wanted their green grape tart but it sold out, so I opted for the passion fruit tart instead. I also got an iced matcha latte since it was really cheap. Even though I didn't get the tart I wanted, the passion fruit tart was really good. It had a distinct Passionfruit flavor but not too overpowering or sweet. The crust was crumbly and the raspberry on top was fresh. The matcha latte was more on the bitter side but was smooth. I heard the owners moved here from Torrance, California -- and I'm so grateful they did. What a gift to have this kind of quality and care here in Houston. The Mont Blanc is a must. The desserts were amazing. croissant and my son ordered the crème brûlée. My husband ordered some raisin pastry. Not sure what it was called. Average cost I spent per person was about eight dollars and that included a drink and the pastry so reasonable pricing here and great service !! The ladies at the counter brought us our food and our drinks, and they also cleaned up our table. The atmosphere was quaint, cute and cozy. Go and try awesome bakery items. This is a cute little cafe with French inspired Japanese baked goods, or maybe Japanese inspired French baked goods..? Either way they're French pastries. Walking in, its a decent sized cafe with lots of bright light and fun black/white wall art of various French queens and figures. They have coffee and teas along with various pastries and crepes. I ordered 4 pastries and each of them were amazing (though the Paris Brest was a bit of a disappointment, more on that later). The pastries themselves were very well baked, flavors were extremely balanced, and nothing was overly sweet. The tart shells were so buttery, crumbly, and light and the choux pastry crisp, moist, and light. My disappointment with the Paris Brest was that it was more a take on the famous dessert, in that it was almost like a strawberries and cream version (whipped cream, vanilla cream, and strawberries) rather than the traditional praline mousseline. It wasn't bad by any means, I just wanted that rich hazelnut/almond cream. Overall, this is definitely sort of a hidden gem, tucked in the corner of a random strip mall in the outskirts of Houston. The standout for me was the raisin apple roll -- absolutely delicious! It had a tasty croissant-style crust that was perfectly flaky and buttery, with just the right amount of sweetness inside. I was here for a staff meeting this morning. I had no idea what to expect but after a brief introduction, I realized this is a French style Japanese bakery. The sweet buttery aroma from the kitchen filled the entire restaurant. The menu is written on a black-board style wall paper. I loved how they defined the portion size of each coffee type on the adjacent wall. (I couldn't take a picture because someone was hogging the couch). I ordered the almond croissant and a cup of decaf tea. The croissant was really flaky and filling was soft. It had a good balance of both worlds. Not too sweet. Just palatable. I heard there are some Japanese culture presence in this part of town. Seiwa Market is less than 2 miles away. There are plenty of parking and the restaurant was very clean. The presentation of their desserts is beautiful and neat. The crust was soft and easy to dig into. The lemon had a subtle tart flavor to it, and it wasn't overly sweet compared to the ones I've had before. It seemed to have a glaze over the top, like the ones on fruit tarts. I was visiting the bookshop in the same shopping center and the staff there told me to check out the pastry shop down the way, so I did! Service was prompt and courteous, and I bought pastries for all of my family. The total raspberry tart, pear almond, baked cheesecake, blueberry tart, and apple tart all went into my box (which was a very nice pastry box, packed with care). I shared them with my folks and they raved about how good all of the treats were. The shop, too, is very clean and bright. I really liked the baskets on the floor by every table... Chez Kobayashi sells French pastries but bakers are Japanese. That means the pastries aren't overly sweet. The bakery also offers crepes, coffee, tea, croissant sandwich, and quiche. Staff greeted me once I entered the bakery. They waited for me patiently to decide on the pastries I wanted. The selection wasn't huge but whatever were displayed in the display case, they looked very appetizing. I had to-go tarts, eclair, Mont Blanc, and a couple of croissants. The tart shells were baked perfectly. The fruits in the fruit tarts were fresh. The custards in the tarts, in terms of sweetness, were perfect. The passion fruit, and lemon tarts were tart, and there were strong passion fruit, and lemon taste respectively. However, the mango tart didn't have any hint of mango which was disappointing. The dark chocolate ganache tart was delicious. The ganache tasted semi-sweet and rich. The chocolate eclair was super good. It was big and filled with custard from front to back. The eclair shell was baked perfectly. The shell was soft but not soggy. Yummy! The chocolate croissant, and the chocolate almond croissant were fluffy and crispy. But they lacked the buttery taste. The chocolate used in both croissants were good. The almond chocolate croissant was topped with generous amount of sliced almonds, and had very strong almond after taste. Lastly, the chestnut flavored cream in the Mont Blanc didn't come through. It was like eating another pastry with colored cream. There is plenty of parking since the bakery is located in a strip mall. The bakery is clean and has inviting interior for customers to enjoy their food. There are a couple of tables and chairs outside the bakery for outdoor dining. I would be back again for their pastries, and also the accessibility is a plus. read more

You have to go to Chez Kobayashi like immediately. They have some of the best baked goods I've ever had. We tried a handful of items (pictured) and for the quality and deliciousness, pricing was reasonable (about $23 for the 4 items pictured). The winner for me was the passionfruit tart with a fresh raspberry in the center. The passionfruit flavor came through strong and wasn't artificial or overly sweet like a lot of other so-called passionfruit items I've tried elsewhere, the texture of the tart was silly and smooth, and the crust was perfectly buttery and crisp. The pear tart was equally delicious. Another thing I enjoyed was the diverse offerings they had across both sweet and savor pastry. I recommend visiting early because their pastry case was already dwindling by mid afternoon when we arrived. My partner and I will definitely be back soon to try out more from their extensive menu. read more

Chez Kobayashi was something I stumbled across on my search for a tasty cake spot that has options with less frosting and unique flavors. While it looks fairly unassuming - from the few pastries I tried, I'm convinced that this little family owned patisserie might outshine even the big names in town in terms of flavor. I tried the Sacher torte (chocolate cake with raspberry and apricot jams and a light chocolate ganache on top) and the pear almond tart and was extremely impressed by the flavors of both. For my original purpose, I ordered the Sachertorte as a birthday cake and it came beautifully presented with fresh fruits on top and a pretty red ribbon. Pretty Decent. I was a huge fan of Julie's croissants so I decided to stop by hoping to snag an almond and chocolate for comparison. Unfortunately they were sold out so I ended up with a plain croissant and an Almond-Pear Tart instead. The croissant was pretty great. It was crisp and buttery, and had a huge air pocket right in the middle where the butter-steam puffed it up. We split the tart that evening for dinner and it was good, but didn't quite satisfy my craving. I'm still not certain if it was because the tart crust was actually too thick, or if it just seemed thicker because maybe there was a layer of frangipane between the pear topping and the tart shell?
